Camping In Emergency Survival Tent

  • After the unpleasantness of the last camping trip, I decided to test out an emergency survival tent to see if it would be a good addition to my gear. I just set up in a normal campground (probably to the dismay of the respectable campers). Of course, a storm rolled in right on time, haha, but it told me what I needed to know about camping in these emergency tents.

Last year a wildfire consumed half my town and pushed within feet of my property. I was evacuated in an unprepared panic and had to sleep rough for close to a week but somehow even with the trauma of it all knowing I was hunkering down like Steve made me smile. I have spent the post fire time learning about preparedness and have been inspired to enjoy camping and hiking in non emergency settings for the first time in years. Thank you Steve for your positivity and humanity, it truly makes a difference in this world.

Not much you can do about the smoke when you use wet wood. Steve would have to baton the wet wood away from center of the dry wood to attempt to eliminate the smoke altogether. Not everyone carries around with them a blow torch to start their camp fires. Just an observation. Mylar no good. Very flammable. Not ment to be used around open flame. Love you vids man.

Keep the survival blanket in your pack: use for ground cover or as a blanket inside your sleeping bag for extra warmth. It might come in handy in winter camping.

    • @flamerollerx01
      @flamerollerx01 Před 2 lety +20

Yeah I was thinking something similar. It could be used in a real tent with your sleeping bag. You could sew one end shut and then put your sleeping bag inside of it, then get in. It would serve as a thermal barrier, keeping cold out and heat in and because you'd be in a regular tent (even if a small one), you wouldn't have to worry about moisture so much.

Yep...I've also slept on top of one a few times; however, It's usually a good idea to get up early and remove the bedding immediately as then You have a nice place to sit down, and because people kind of freak out if You're still laying on top of it, as though it was unsanitary or something...ha!!
It can be a bit of a drag getting up too early because they are usually nice/flat, and comfortable for a back-sleep.
Far less bugs, etc. to worry about...just not overly modest. 😊

Now setting them up we kept the entrance low 12-18” and the other end was rolled up and rocks placed on it. A poncho was usually draped over needed clothespins to hold in place. We biked the whole C&O Canal😊 and it rained most of the time but we have great memories.

Hey Steve! I'm still marathoning your camping playlist (and holy hell are there a lot!) I'm loving the dedication you're showing to the whole "stealth camping" bit, keep up the great work.
I have a few suggestions for this reflective survival tent thing that you could maybe use in upcoming videos (assuming you haven't done them, and I just haven't gotten around to those videos).
#1) These reflective materials work best at close proximity, so as to reflect your body heat back at you. So the lower and closer to your body, and the least amount of drafts possible will make for a warmer sleep.
#2) Insulating and protecting the outside with a framework of debris and leaf litter would help to reduce the chances of tearing, should a twig fall on it in the night, and would help in concealing it. Many mountaineers and hikers use these as an inside lining for their tarp shelters and hammocks too. Used properly, this thing will keep you as warm as a fresh burrito.
#3) Even it's called a "tent", it works just as nicely as a sleeping bag liner between 2 really thin sleeping bags. It's a great way to lighten (and lower the cost of...) your pack when stealth camping in the winter, since you could buy the cheaper summer supplies and use them year-round.
#4) having your rucksack at one end, and a clothespin to keep the other closed off, will greatly reduce a through draft.
#5) I also like butting one end up to the trunk of a low-branched conifer tree (like a pine), and use my rucksack as a door when I'm lucky enough to stumble across that perfect tree.
I hope these give you some ideas for future videos. My heart goes out to you in these trying times. Give my love to crazy neighbor too. His smiling face and chipper demeanor always brightens up my day.

I would recommend the S.O.L. Escape Bivvy because it is breathable and water resistant. I've noticed that many mylar products are not breathable and they cause a lot of condensation to build up in the interior of the bag. The SOL bivvys have kept me warm and dry on many a cold camping night where I thought I had a warm enough sleeping bag but didn't. They are fairly strong, and SOL also makes tarps with mylar that are extremely tough and that will hold up to a lot of abuse. I carry them to use as a lean-to, because I don't like sleeping in tents. I spent over a thousand nights doing urban camping in the 90s and the 00s when I was a young homeless man. The SOL products helped me in what would have otherwise been a terrible situation. Thanks for your channel. I've always thought about having a channel like yours to share my knowledge but never got around to it.

I've actually used an emergency survival tent before though not in rainy-hail weather. We used a 1-2 person tube tent i bought at WalMart for a survival mssion in the desert-like conditions. It even rained and we did well. One negative was the tent seemed to move, or roll, like a tube in the sand. LOL, we woke up several feet from where we originally set it up. I usually carry a flat tarp, cord, and a few stakes, so I can design whatever I need. I even slept in one with my Bloodhound one night in the mountains. There were rattle snakes all over so the opening made me uncomfortable. My hound thought it was great fun! I was on a search team looking for a missing person that was found.

I'd suggest a poncho as they are infinitely more useful. Keep you dry, use as a shelter and a tarp. Plus in true survival situations, you can configure them to also collect rain water.
Those mylar style blankets are great at keeping a person from cooling too quickly (shock, runners, wet etc) but are way too flimsy to be used as a shelter in anything but light wind and rain. In a real emergency, better than nothing, but way better options out there.

  • @proehm

They make a heavy duty space blanket tarp with grommets in it. Some of them are orange, but your can find them in green. I keep one in my day pack for backpacking for emergencies. $20 on amazon here in America. They fold up fairly easily. I keep mine on the same side as my back in the pack, kind of adds a bit of padding and makes the pack stiffer. If you've got a rubber mallet, you might try pounding the your skillet flat. Savory crepes: steak and cheese with onions, mushrooms, peppers like a Philly cheese steak. You can also do a chicken parmesan with chicken, cheese, tomato sauce. Gyro ingredients are also awesome in a crepe. You can stick just about anything in a crepe. Smooth peanut butter with nutella and strawberries is one of the best sweet crepes you can eat. Maple syrup with just about any fruit would probably be awesome.

    Sweet Crepes
    Ingredients
    3/4 cup all-purpose flour
    1 teaspoons salt
    1 cup milk (preferably whole)
    2 eggs
    2 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon melted butter, plus more for cooking crepes
    1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
    Serving suggestions
    Jam
    Honey
    Sugar
    Chocolate hazelnut spread (recommended: Nutella)
    Peanut butter
    Sliced bananas
    Directions
Put the flour and salt and in a large mixing bowl. Gradually whisk in the milk. Whisk in the eggs, 1 at a time, and then whisk in the sugar, melted butter, and vanilla. Cover and let rest in the refrigerator for about 1 hour.
Heat an 8-inch nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Melt a small pat of butter in the pat and swirl around so that it lightly coats the surface.
Add 1/3 cup of the batter and move your wrist in a circular pattern to coat the pan with thin even layer of batter. Cook for about 1 minute or until the first side browns lightly, then flip and cook 45 seconds to 1 minute longer. Remove to a plate and repeat with remaining batter.
Fill with jam, honey, sugar, chocolate hazelnut spread, peanut butter, bananas - anything sweet that you enjoy from your pantry.
    Easy Savoury Crepes
    Ingredients
    1 cup all-purpose flour
    ¼ teaspoon salt
    3 eggs
    1 ¼ cups milk, 1% or 2%
    2 tablespoons butter, melted
    Chicken and Garlic Filling:
    5 tablespoons butter
    4 cloves garlic, minced
    2 teaspoons chopped fresh thyme
2 ½ cups shredded rotisserie chicken
⅓ cup herb and garlic cream cheese
    2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
    DirectionsInstructions Checklist
    Step 1
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
    Step 2
Crepes: In a bowl, combine flour and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, milk and melted butter. Whisk egg mixture into flour mixture until smooth. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour. Strain mixture into a clean bowl.
    Step 3
Heat a small non-stick skillet or crepe pan over medium heat. Brush pan with some oil.
    Step 4
Pour approximately 1/4 cup batter into centre of pan, swirling pan to coat. Cook for about 1 minute or until bottom is a light golden colour. Flip and cook for 30 seconds. Transfer to plate. Repeat with remaining batter. (Make-ahead: Stack crepes between waxed paper, wrap and refrigerate for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 1 month.)
    Step 5
Chicken and Garlic Filling: In a skillet, melt 3 tablespoons of the butter over medium high heat with garlic and thyme. Add chicken and cook, stirring for 5 minutes or until heated through. Stir in cream cheese until melted and smooth. Remove from heat and divide the chicken mixture into centre of each crepe and fold over. Place in shallow casserole dish, overlapping slightly. Melt remaining 2 tablespoons butter and drizzle over stuffed crepes.
    Step 6
Place in preheated oven for about 10 minutes or until warmed through. Sprinkle with parsley before serving.
    Chocolate and Strawberry Filling:
4 ounces chopped milk chocolate, semi sweet or bittersweet chocolate
    2 cups fresh strawberries, quartered
    1/2 teaspoon icing sugar
    Ground cinnamon (optional)
    Whipped cream (optional)
Sprinkle chocolate along centre of each crepe and top with strawberries. Roll up and place in shallow casserole dish.
Place in preheated 350 degrees F (180 degrees C) oven for about 10 minutes or until warmed through and chocolate is melted.
Dust with icing sugar and cinnamon, if using, and dollop with whipped cream, if desired
    before serving.
    Variation: Garlic Shrimp Filling:
    5 tablespoons butter
    4 cloves garlic, minced
2 teaspoons fresh thyme, chopped, or 3/4 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
    1 pound small shrimp, thawed
    2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
In a skillet, melt butter over medium high heat with garlic and thyme. Add shrimp. Cook, stirring for 5 minutes or until heated through. Remove from heat and divide the shrimp mixture into centre of each crepe and fold over. Place in a shallow casserole dish, overlapping slightly. Bake at 350 degrees F (180 degrees C) for about 10 minutes or until warmed through. Sprinkle with parsley before serving.
    Tips:
You can substitute 3 cups frozen sliced strawberries, thawed, for the fresh strawberries.
3/4 teaspoon dried thyme leaves may be substituted for 2 teaspoons fresh thyme.

Steve has such an even keel nonchalant voice. Most of us would have been pulling our hair out if we had brought our camping gear, set up our tent and started on the meal, then it rained.
But not Steve. He just pulls on a garbage bag or whatever he has handy and keeps right on with the itinerary in his happy go lucky voice, no matter what the circumstances. I've seen him do it in bear country, with all sorts of challenges with his house, having film stolen, on down the line. He takes all of the fear out of what would upset most of us, making it seem like just another day in the park. 😎
Examples: "Better move, I'm getting hail in my mushrooms."
"Obviously, there's going to be water in the structure... Let's get to bed and deal with these problems in the morning." 😄

We called those tube tents when I was a Boy Scout. They're light and help keep the rain off, but they're not great in wind because they're open on both ends. We found the best way to hang one was to put the windward end up against a rock, big tree, or other windbreak. Also, you can make loops in your ridge line to tie around a pebble poked into a dimple in the plastic to keep the ends from sliding down toward the middle of the tent. (Like this: czcams.com/video/KFqPw-J2S00/video.html ) You can also do that if you need to tie out the sides to keep the bottom flat. That way you don't have to poke a hole in the plastic.

Steve,, I do not know your particulars,, but you should try sleeping ;cowboy'. It works incredibly well. Works best with a canvas ground sheet,, but a waterproof something will work. Tarp should be about 10X12. Can be smaller but I am 6'4" I like the larger tarp. Pick your spot perfectly,, sheltered,, a slight rise, never a low spot, Lay the tarp out. Lay a wool blanket doubled , short, normal military wool blanket, corner to corner. Lay your second wool blanket atop yourself. Then pull the foot corner up and over yourself,,, corner will pull up to about your knees or thighs. Take the outside lower corner and wrap it over yourself,, and the the upper outside corner and pull it across the other way. The corner above your head, you can pull over your head if raining,, or just leave it flat and look at the stars. I have slept warm as toast down to just above 0 F Completely comfy down to 20F and one blanket on concrete,, and down to 40 F with just the tarp and laying in pressed down brush and weeds. When canoe camping,,, mostly what I do,, the biggest benefit is in the AM,, no tent,, no gear to pack up. Just roll up the tarp and blankets (Ya know the bedroll on the horse behind the saddle?) in my case tuck it in a dry bag and into the canoe. I can be on the river in minutes, and before the sun rises. And,,,, it is so nice to sleep looking at the stars.

This year already three approximately 100 mile wilderness canoe/camp travels,, and may be a 4th if I can get the current job done quickly enough. I will definitely keep one of those bad boys in my kit - its cheap, light, and takes up no space, and it works

Your best bet for heavy rain is to get a tent that is made for it. Clostnature Lightweight Backpacking Tent - 3 Season Ultralight Waterproof Camping Tent is like $80 and weights 5.5 pounds. To get something lighter will require spending way too much extra.

I didn't find this video lame at all. In fact, I really enjoyed it. I enjoy all of your content, whatever it is. I got a chuckle thinking of what the other campers must have thought of your emergency tent. Looking forward to the stealth next week and the upcoming river trip in your new boat.

Any breakfast combo works well for a crepe. Mushrooms caramelized onions and peppers are good too for veggie ones and simple strawberry or banana with nutella is great for sweet crepes
