Incomprehensibly precise. This style may not be everyone's cup of tea, but there is no denying that Matt is at the pinnacle of the drum world.
It's weird to say it since it feels like he just came onto the scene, but my list in no particular order (outside of Vinnie) is:
Vinnie
Weckl
Cobham
Garstka
Royster, Jr.
@@theboxingteacher4080 great list 👍 I would add Blake Richardson and Alex Rüdinger as well
@@theboxingteacher4080 I thought blake Richardson in there just for shits and giggles jus my opinion
Have you seen Matt Greiner from the band August Burns Red?!
Definitely not my cup of tea. I find it all so unbearable boring and unlistenable. It just doesn’t move me in any way.
no matter how many times I watch this I still can't comprehend how the muscle memory and mind body connection holds onto so much contradicting information
I dont think even he can comprehend it. He just has it. People who are elite level talent like this rarely understand what exactly it is that makes them so good. Its just something theyve had. Obviously schooling helps, but theres certainly a level of natural talent that is above average for musicians.
@@Southboundpachyderm Nah he does know, this guy is a displacement genius and that's just hard work, most people see it and admire it instead of trying, he is trying to go beyond and beyond that's why he's able to do this stuff, he didn't settle and he will never, drums are notes on top of notes and notes after notes, nothing else to it slow this down enough and learn, don't just look at it, grab the sticks sit down and try, it'll come.
We’re really witnessing drumming history unfold right before our very eyes with every video Matt releases
Truest statement ever told!
Why is it everyone currently named MATT are skippers of their current genres?????? 👀
They’re the apostles we really need!
Sure. But what a pointless open ended statement.
I mean you're witnessing drumming history every time you see someone playing the drums
I listen to a ton of prog metal pretty much on the daily, and I'm able to follow most of the structure even through 7-8 minute songs.
AAL's music continues to be the exception upon which my brain just switches off and doesn't even try to comprehend the dizzying onslaught of polymeters, polyrhythms, time signatures and metric modulations coming at you all at once - especially when the totality of it still grooves and blends together into deceptively ordinary sounding music.
Well said all of that precisely has at some point gone through my head
Alot of AAL’s songs are comprehensible once listening a few times through (kascade, tempting time) but monomyth is just on a completely different Level
Try car bomb
@@GalaxxyGamerZz I agree but at the same time you can come back to some of those songs and find another thing to appreciate from them
@@GalaxxyGamerZz That, and Arithmophobia. I'm probably never be able to fully comprehend that song
It’s fascinating seeing how much influence the drumming of Thomas Haake has had on the metal world
For sure but let's not forget the work Sean Reinert, Danny Carey and Gene Hoglan contributed to raising the bar in metal
@@ryukan250 I'm with you on this selection. Cannot imagine the modern metal landscape without Haake, Hoglan, Carey and Reinert.
Absolutely correct! Thomas blazed this trail.
No the guy from acdc
I kinda want to put Morgan Agren in the same breath but he kinda does his own thing. I consider him similar in my mind, he is so quirky sorry i just had to mention him. Definitely missing some marbles, but in the best way possible hahaha
"We need a producer for Matt Garstka. He must have good chops"
Producer: Ivan Chopik
Hey, it takes a lot of skill to make this track with Matt's drums over top of it sound thin...
@@Fay65 shit man Matt could play on a hollowed out goose corpse and it would sound good.
I'm out of the loop, who's Ivan Chopik? I just know him from Guitar Messenger.
@@jinzayo He was one of the guitarists for the band Pained In Exile for a while. Not sure what the rest of his mixing history is though.
But also i'm confused, Ivan was the videographer for this, not the person who mixed it lmao
this is it
now no one can make a drum cover of this song ever again
Except Eloy Casagrande.
There's actually one already out there that's pretty much perfect!
not after this video
Check out Chris Morino cover, spot on
Chris Turner: Challenge accepted! 😂
I’m sorry , he HAS to be one of the most dominant drummers of this generation. I know some other guys can play really fast, etc. but Matt’s comprehension of time and rhythm and how he applies it is absolutely epic.
Its just doesnt sound good. I bet over 80 % of listeners are musicians amazed by the skillz and rarely anyone listens for the music.
This is the new Matt that I've wanted to see. This is what manifestation and dedication look like, and then drops it on all of us. Watching you play unlocks a realm of self possiblity. Amazing drummer
Can we just take a moment to appreciate how much of an absolute beast this man is, the dude’s on another level
Honestly, whenever I hear the sound of drums and cymbals in my head- This is that sound. Dare I say that is a PERFECT drum tone and recording? I think I just might...
Its obvious Matt has collected all the Infinity Stones to be able to do this
Lol Thomas lang is better and marvel Infinity stones are lame and weak.
Darkseid laughs at how pathetic and weak Thanos is.
@@dcmastermindfirst9418 imagine being this insecure for someone else?
or is it just the typical root for the lesser known musician elitism bullshit?
Hearing the drum playthru made me appreciate that entire last groove TO THE MAX.
1:53 to 2:18, what a tasty drumming. The guitars are already beautiful but the drums is what truly makes that part shines that much.
Matt you are the man right now.
I got the notification and thought it was another new track for a second haha. Still awesome. Can't wait for more tracks.
This whole playthrough is nuts..... but from 2:54 to the end, my eyes kept getting progressively wider as the toms were added in until the final low tom hits. Sick ending!!
I’m so excited for the next album guys, Matt is an absolute legend on the kit. Speaking of which, that is an incredible build. Such craftsmanship in both playing and kit.
I seriously wonder how long it took you to really nail this track. This is SO insane. I'd love to hear you talk about this on stream sometime if you ever come back on Twitch!!
Probably only did one take
Matt always films these in 1 take, though to get the track down its prolly only taken him 20+/- years of intentional practice and study 😉
MATT
THANK YOU
He probably wrote the song in his head over breakfast and nailed it one try in the studio
@@intraterrestrial5035
Agreed on the "intentional" practice. It's boring to do focused practice. It's fun to just jam along and do random shit. But focused practice is what gets you to the next level. I know this but I do not apply this lol.
This dude strives for perfection and it's so inspiring.🙏
The metric modulation after 2:46 is so sick.
insane indeed
As someone who loves playing drums, I am content with the idea of never being this good.
I am a Bass player who continues to watch Charles Berthoud videos...I feel this in my soul.
Same😂
Same but being a guitar player and seeing abasi videos
Not me dude. This guy made me quit lmao.
"Be content never being this good" should be the next album title.
the absolute independence and freakishly minute subdivisions and the way he so seamlessly shifts the feel and time is really unlike any of drummer alive. People aspire to be matt, matt aspires to stay himself.
I find this so unlistenable but if this gets some people off go for it.
@Sharing Lungs why are you here if you don't even listen to it..
@@sharinglungs3226 then get out of here or at least be constructive lol
@@sharinglungs3226 it’s hard to digest, but once you do it’s great
Lol Thomas Lang's limb independence is 10x better
This is one of the first covers I’ve ever watched and thought to myself, no matter how long I practice I don’t think I can ever attain this level of mastery.
Knowing him this was probably also the first and only take 👌🏻 🔥
Cool, another drum piece for me to spend 35 years learning to play
Can we all take a moment and appreciate how insanely gorgeous the kit is!!
That DW Kit is gorgeous. Most beautiful Kit I've seen Matt Play on
One of the nicest looking and one of the best sounding kits I've ever seen. That Meinl Equilibrium China is absolutely godlike as well. Unreal.
Matt got angry beacause there was to many guys that could cover joy of motion so he did madness of many, then a few men could still cover him, so he decided to be gud.
iirc Most of the drum arrangements for Joy of Motion were already written before Matt came on board
@@RyanLD89 oh, didn't know that heh
One thing is cover drums and another thing is compose.
@@headbangercani This, if covering Matt's songs is already nuts imagine the big brain it is to write them
Here's the thing though: joy of motion is imo the best album they've released. Why? Because it fucking grooves hard! madness of many and this new stuff, while incredible technically, takes things so far that it becomes a little less enjoyable - to me at least joy of motion struck that perfect balance between groove and technicality and it's the only AAL album I regularly revisit
Man, he is oozing with confidence with every sound he makes. So good!
He is just amazing. Technically insane, solid as rock and that sound.... Every day I like his way of playing more.
His drums bring an elegance and taste to the track that might otherwise be missing. He fills holes that aren't there. He makes space. Never too much, never not enough.
Ever since this track came out, I've been hooked on the jaw dropping drum performance.
Matt just continues to make drumming more inhuman. haha
A living metronome
This blows my mind. Sometimes being humbled feels good.
Sound Engineer: How Many ghost notes do you have?
Matt: Yes.
More like: how many ghost notes aren’t there?
@@Greasonn How many ghost note'n't?
@@dfltr 🤣
What's really awesome to me is to have the amount of will power and passion for something, to spend your life getting THIS good at it. Truly remarkable.
Esto es oro puro 🤩 El mejor baterista de la actualidad!! Grande 🤟🔥
It is obvious how hard this guy works. His drive and work ethic is unmatched. Wow.
I like that he plays the bass drum bursts fully alternating his feet like RLR-LRL- and not RLR-RLR-. That's the most energy-efficient way to play them.
It is actually shocking how good a drummer he is, and the band as a whole
A single bass drum can no longer contain the awesomeness.
tosin ✓
matt ✓
now we need javier's playthrough
I _would_ like to see a classical guitar adaptation of Monomyth...
@@S3lvah it wouldn't really be feasible imo... the articulations used wouldn't transfer properly. Some AaL stuff works great but this would just get lost in translation I'm afraid, though I'd love someone to prove me wrong.
and before anyone asksI'm a major in classical guitar at a conservatory, so I'd like to believe maybe my opinion counts for at least a little bit haha
That part where you strike your kick drum at the exact same time as tosin and javi pluck their guitars, thats that good stuff yo👌👌👌. You know, the part...
chicka chicka dun dunn.. that part? Rock solid for sure, if we're talking the same part... probably are
NEXT LEVEL!!!!
I bet all those Gartska lovers who bought those Tama Bubinga kits 1000$ a drum are scratching their heads.
The DW kit sounds great; as always. Gartska is one of the best drummers whose ever lived, across all genres. He’s playing shit only a handful of humans can play, and only 1 human can think up. Being that 1 thinker, to me at least, is more vital than being able to mimic.
This is some deep shit right here
DW always sounds like a bucket with a pillow in it...
This is "the sound". Perfect. Waiting 43years for this. This guy is a beast. New generation
This truly inspire me to sell my drums.
LOL.....
This guy have several brains distributed along his extremities.
That is the one and only explanation.
I like how he's now at the point where you literally need a "no, this is real" disclaimer at the start of the video
You're one of the best drummers on the planet. Absolutely unbelievable work. You're a genius, Matt. Thank you for your work. It truly does not get more badass than this.
2:53 is just a sick nasty modulation. AAL AF
Those ghost notes on the snare 🔥🔥
Loving the changing contrast in the rhythms etc \m/
Favorite section is when they go into the heavenly sounding dirtyclean part and he uses all the cymbals and shit. It just sounds so pure and open, love it.
Utterly ridiculous, been waiting for this since the song came out
Idolaku iki... Sumpah... Kapan Wong iki nag suroboyo
9 bulan yg lalu 🥲🥲🥲🥲
I never thought I’d ever be so scared of an album
Man this dude has progressed over the years
hard to digest 👏👏👏
2:26 this part hits hard
Amazing. Just amazing.
Two drummers who absolutely blow my mind: Virgil Donati and Matt Garstka.
a master at work
This albums gonna be fucking insaaaane
Oh finally. I can't stop now.
Unpopular opinion: I don’t know how guys like these are alive and there are people out there still believing Lars is actually drumming god
The grain and veneer of that wood is disgustingly beautiful.
There’s no accounting for taste in general, but on a skill for skill basis, he’s gotta be the best drummer to ever live.
No edits. That’s how you know someone put in the hours! INSANE
One of the only drummers that might be able to fill in for Tomas Haake. Loving him on the new DW kit.
He's even starting to look like Tomas Haake!
Lang, Mangini, Donati, Minnemann, Borlai.
the intentional execution of every metric modulation through phrasing so effortlessly, combines with fucking fire chops, is what i love about this performance.
....Aight... 😂
Matt is great at ghost notes!
Polyrhythm is right on!
1:30 man this whole 23 223 223 23 23 223 section is *chefs kiss* especially this little part on the hihat 1:39
So sad he’s not with Tama, but he’s definitely still using the tama throne! (Gaffe tape the logo)
I find that kicks and snare are way better than ever, I'm not sur about toms thought
haha that's true, nice catch
That's the Tama First Chair Series, domed, with no back rest. I have the hydraulic version, and it is amazing. I know a guy who claims his entire drumming career was saved with that very throne. He was suffering from severe back issues from his nightly gigs, but somehow this throne, after having tried many different ones, somehow remedied his pain. That was over ten years ago and he still gigs.
Tosin and Matt are some of the best musicians of our age.
Still waiting for the new album... Great track tho!
I just don't understand how drummers like Matt can memorize all these tracks that require as much precision all over the place as this and keep them straight in their head always. Must be practicing 24/7
I know it seems insane to be able to memorize everything so precisely. However, it's 80% (if not more) muscle memory. Yes- it requires even the best to still play multiple hours every day, but to answer your question- that's how it's done. Muscle memory and tons of practice. I started playing piano when I was 8, currently have just over 20 years of professional experience playing and composing classical music at a level I used to believe I would never achieve. It's a little hard to explain, but at the most difficult levels of playing, each song/track/piece etc. becomes just one single, fluid motion. Less thinking, more feeling.
That DW set sounds better than any of his previous sets. This dude is going to inspire a whole new generation. Keep killing it, yo
I remember hearing this song and thinking "okay maybe if I watch him play it, I'll understand it better."
What an absolute fool I was.
Brutal as always 🤯 Matt you have like + 20000 hours of practice time right? Thanks for posting this amazing masterpiece, its incredible how good the DW sounds! Now I'm going back to the practice room 🤣
I think it's close to 30k hours...
He practices 40 hours a day
@@mellindrums Matt is _absolutely_ the Ling Ling of drums
The rhythms in the last minute of the song challnge my brain just listening.
This whole take is great, but that stealthy double on the kick at 3:10 🔥🥲
Matt is doing what everyone used to think Thomas Hakke was ACTUALLY doing. I respect both of them hugely.
Holy shitttttt
Matt, damn dude, I mean, I just don’t know what to say, you are the perfection itself as a drummer.
love me some math gartska but something up with the mix? can't hear his drums well enough
I feel like that ever play through they do
01:06 🤤
love this song. Drums are on another level. Perfect execution as always.
Going to DW is the best decision you have ever made Matt! This sounds soooo fucking good!
So awesome that one of my favorite drummers ever went to DW at the same time as me haha
@@matthewgonano636 Haha okay 👍
I was both waiting for and scared of this. The evolution of Matt is complete.
too bad matt isnt on zildjian, a zildjian live with him with their band would unreal
He did one with Vic Firth thats just as worth checking out!
Yes! Haven't clicked on a video so fast in a while!
hahaha, we're just little boys trying to play drums,
no triggers - no edits - 100% drummer from another planet
This guy should quit his house painting job and start playing full time.
What a beast!!
Tama sounds better than DW for me!
I feel the same way for now but I might just be getting used to the new sound
This is absolutely insane...
That was insane.
Matts flow is just an amazing to spectate. So articulate and always challenging himself! He's a BEAST
literally the best written drum performance of all time. INSANE
Garstka is outrageous 🔥🔥🔥
Lured in by the overhead view of the drum kit in the thumbnail. Was not disappointed. Dang! That was impressive!
This comment = big giant HUGE thumbs up!! The little one above just doesn't capture how much your drumming inspires me.
