You are quite the handy-man. I enjoy all your videos, especially the bus videos. Thanks.
Thanks much! I keep trying to get back to the bus to finish up a few things and paint, but I've been busy with a few other jobs. But the bus is still there calling out my name! :)
Great help! I'm replacing a metal roof from a hail storm we got last month. Simple building and exactly what I needed to get me started; my first metal roof replacement.
You’re gonna love it!
I just want to say thank you for taking your time to make the video really helps me to put my garage roof on
Great to hear! You're gonna love that new rooof
Doing a simple storage building over singles, this was exactly what I needed! Thanks! And subbed, love the chainsaw stuff, idk how you get up those trees and talk at the same time. Beast mode.
Most excellent! Good luck with the roof!
What's the measurements between each 1×3
Great vid man!I have a leaky roof and was torn with what to do because i like the metal but wasn't sure if i could do it but after watching you very informative vid it gave me the confidence i needed to try it.I haven't started it as of yet but when i accomplish it i will update my post.
Oh excellent! Good luck with it. Take your time and it’ll be great
@@metaspencer That you so much for your encouragement and I will update you when I've completed! Thanks again!
@@danielrobinson4795 You're extremely late on the update. I hope you didn't fall off your roof! Lol
thank you. This is exactly what I was looking for.
good to hear ... and good luck with the project
i'm getting close to doing this at our year round home on an island in Lake Erie. we experience every type of weather imaginable, including severe freezing high wind events that can and have ripped conventional shingles right off the roof. if you have any high wind/ freeze advise let me know. we also have direct sun in the summer so temps are well above 90F during that time. nice vid. thanks
Best advice on high winds is to get the edge and cap pieces installed well. They hold it all together
Awesome, thanks ! really helpful video. ...thinking about going over a low-pitch asphalt roof. I have a little more confidence :)
Good luck with it!
Great job. Thanks for the video.
Good luck with it!
Thanks man nice helpful video!
On good, that's what I like to hear! Good luck out there in roofing land!
Nice job, man!
Thanks!
Looks great.
Big thanks!
Thank you. I learned a lot from your video
Excellent! Thanks for checking it out
Great job! The only disadvantage, the guineas trying flying up there, and they slide right off!
Poor birds! We really messed with their habitat :)
Looks nice
Thank you. Greetings from Calgary, Canada.
Calgary! I’ve only been there once but loved the area!
@@metaspencer Awesome 👍. Looking at ideas as I am planning to do this on my house this summer 🇨🇦🙏
This is very helpful thank mate
Big thanks!
I always strip off the singles. Gives a chance to see the sheathing. It only takes a hour or so. Then I ice and water guard the entire roof b4 doing the perlins/rain screen. If it's a house I add 2" poly iso to dampen the sound of the rain. Especially if it's a cathedral ceiling inside. Makes a huge difference
Great stuff man -- all that makes perfect sense. As this was an old barn it seemed to make sense to go simple. But those are great tips man
Great video for a DYIer
Thanks for checking it out. Sure was nice to reboot that old roof
I spent many a year in sheet metal and green handle snips are lefts and red are rights its about which side of the work you're on, also in the future when working with offsets( m6&m7) it pays to lean the snips like a sailboat when cutting they dont like being perpendicular to the work which is different from regular snips(m1&m2) that want to be at right angles to the work . I was curious as to why you didnt leave any overhang off the roof on the bottom seems like it would've helped keep moisture out of the fascia 's better.
Oh boy those snips have driven me crazy for years -- thanks for the tips! I totally see what you mean now and that's a big help. We left a 2" overhang at the bottom of the roof which should allow the water to shed away without wicking back via capillary action. I've left more before, like 6" ... and then heard rattling in strong winds ... so we went with a bit less on this one where winds are VERY strong. Thanks man!
Thanks it looks good I do have a question what size of nails did you used for the board thanks
long enough to get a good connection into the framing members below
Nice video amigo👍
Gracias!
Thanks for a great video. I have a couple questions;
1. Can the roof panels be lapped horizontally if the panel are short to the ridgeline?
2. What's the spacing on the 1x battens and at the ridge.
Thank you.
Hey, good to hear from you. I have lapped roof panels the long way, that that's not ideal because water can wick back up in there. Make sure you have a big lap, like a foot or so, if you end up doing this. More slope to your roof will help if you end up lapping the long way. As for the battens at the ridge, it depends on the width of your ridge cap. Space them so you can get a good connection to the battens through the ridge cap. Happy roofing!
@@metaspencer thanks for the reply. It's helpful.. thank you very much. I'll be subscribing 👍👍
Very nice job
Thanks for checking it out!
Very helpful
good to hear!
Thanks for the help. I just got my first lil roof project and just wondering how much did u cut where the cap sits?
The ridge just needs a few inches between pieces ... if you get the sheets the right size, you won't have to cut at all. It all depends on the size of your roof
Alright I’ll make sure to do so thanks for the help. God bless you
Sure looks nice when it's all done! My house and out building are all metal roof! great job!
Yeah, I love the stuff. I'll be doing a few more metal roof jobs this summer ... looking forward to it!
Wow someone actually demonstrating installation of foam closures so rare would have been perfect demonstration with joint mastic. Still a useful video 👍
Joint mastic is good stuff! I used it in places on the last roof I did over here czcams.com/video/s3CNY1qAJqc/video.html
Thank you , very helpful information .
My roof looks to be the same size and my house appears to be the same structure . I know this video is a few years old but was wondering if you could throw out a ballpark price on what the material alone would cost . I can get wood at a decent price where I work so was just wondering about the metal cost ?
That's really hard to put a number on given how much location affects price -- I'd imagine between $3k and $6k just as a wild guess, but you'd need more than just roofing for a house. You'll need trim pieces as well, screws, roof cap, etc.
I do.know that you suppose to screw down the 1x4's and the screw is suppose to also go through the rafter.
You said it buddy! Gotta attach that roof well!
I would like some advice on what to do if my sheets start running off course?
OH yes, that can be a problem. The deal is that you can squish down the raised portions of the roof or compress them to get the sheeting back on track. This video goes over how to make them straight again at about the 21st minute point: czcams.com/video/6X6rcSkJRAs/video.html
One thing with working with tin it's seems like you always get a rippel somewhere along the line especially of comes your trim
The worst ripple I have ever seen was when they put the finished tin on and they were working for both ends to the center
Oh wow! Yeah it’s fussy stuff
Hey don’t you need some kind of synthetic underlynment on top of shingle?
You could definitely go that way, but keep in mind that this is an old shed so any sweating/condensation under the roof will just go down onto the old shingle roof
Hi Great job, I also did a metal roof but I have a Big Question to Ask??? Starting inside my house the ceiling is 9mm pine boards, then 18mm OSB boards, then 200mm Rockwool insulation, then some foil paper( turns out it’s not waterproof) then my metal sheets… so will I get condensation issues? I live in france we get icy, snowy weather at times lots of rain and also sun!
Thanks for the answer….
It’s hard to know without seeing it but a waterproof barrier on top of that foil would be nice.
Just finished redoing a flat roof that had water penetration in ceiling, this was tearing off existing epdm with gravel etc, this was at least ten yrs with a new membrane..anyway it was redone but it still is flat and I ended up going up on th roof and dumping sitting water i would like to ask yo if i can put on a tiltwedge type extension so to allow rainwater to flow off....as this is the best way to go as the roofer were not going with a pitch which is
my fault and obviously was more work getting into a framing..so my question is why not have a preconstructed wedge made out of metal lightweight to rid myself of the ponding problem,yes..
I think this is a great idea, as flat roofs are always a problem. With that said, you'll need to frame the new roof structure to adequately handle the load, wind sheer, etc. It can certainly be done but will take some engineering. Great idea, though.
I am not sure what area/conditions you are working in, but do you ever need to pre-drill holes slightly larger than the screw for expansion?
Roofing material is usually thin and flexible enough that expansion and contraction is not a problem, but if you want to take the time to predrill you certainly can
I’m going to be installing metal roof on a straight leentoo roof. What is your recommendation to start and making it perfectly square? I don’t want to wrestle each panel trying to keep the edge straight. Thank you
First I'd say check your roof for square ... it's it's square your sheets will go on nicely if the first one is aligned. If you need to fudge things, just do it gradually over time
Good job boss
Thanks man
Question I have some 1by 11/2 pieces left over from another job could I use them or do I need to go and get 1by 3 to use? Thank you! Really enjoyed your video! You did a great job teaching!
Just about anything will work. Just need a solid base to screw to
@@metaspencer my friend who is a very good contractor said I should be down felt paper first on roof. I didn't see you do that?
Yes do it. Great water barrier. We didn’t do it only because it was an old shed
I’ve heard one needs to drive the screw on top of the ridges instead of on the flat … I’ve seen both and can’t seem to find out what’s best . I have a coated standard galvanized roofing panel grey colour. Wondering where I should place the screws and how far apart . Also does it matter for a low pitch roof if the panels are placed horizontal or vertical . Thanks
There is plenty of debate out there about where to place the screws -- high or low. I always do it low but I'm not gonna say that's the best method. The main thing is not to over compress the screw gaskets. As for direction you always need the panels running "vertical" or with the pitch of the roof. Otherwise water will get in the seams no matter the pitch
Another great video! Thanks!!! The barn must be open and no attic space? Just wondering why there were no roof vents? I have to do a similar job to my garage eventually but need venting as the heat is crazy hot in the summer in the attic space.
Yeah, the trusses are exposed inside with no attic ... and venting isn't a problem because much of the barn/shed is open to a chicken coop and whatnot on one end. But yes: in your case venting will be important to keep heat and moisture down. Good luck with it!
I’m asking these questions because I would like to roof our two story house which currently has old shingles.
You can do it! When I last did a two-story house it was easiest with two people: one to hold the sheets and the other to affix them
metaspencer ok
metaspencer Thanks.
What if the roof looks saggy in certain areas? Would it be bad foundation or the wood under the shingles need replaced or just a patch.. over the top of the shingles before the metal roof
I have another roof to do this summer and it has sagging sections. I'll cut them out to see what's going on underneath. If rot is present it'll have to be replaced before installing the new metal roof. Ya don't want to cover up problems that need repair.
what's the material under the metal sheets made of? looks pretty solid.
Wood strapping
I’m getting ready to do an almost identical roof on a flip house I just bought.
Flip that house! good stuff man
Is strapping always recommended? Some contractors do not use it so who do you believe?I am thinking of getting a new metal roof and I would like to have it done properly. Thanks for your help.Greetings from PEI.
In my understanding the gap beneath the metal roofing is important to allow it to breath, as the metal will get condensation under it
Im getting ready to do this on my house which has a simple roof except for one pipe and the Chimney im alittle nervse
You'll do a great job! Just prep a lot, plan even more, and it'll be great.
Hey what if it’s a residential how do I handle noise if there is no shingle underneath?
Noise should be absorbed by your attic insulation, the structural materials, tarpaper over the plywood, etc ... but even with all of that, a metal roof is always gonna be loud in a rainstorm
Do you over lap the sheets or just butt them up to each till you cover the side of roof
Overlap just one bump
What is the purpose of the foam strips? I am getting ready to do my garage and didn't purchase the foam. Is it necessary?
I've installed the roofing both ways, with and without the strips. If you leave them out you may get snow and ice up in there, if you live in a cold climate. Bats can get in there, too, in my experience. With all that said, foam doesn't last forever so is probably not going to solve those problems forever
looks good
big thanks!
Did your metal (when purchased )come with the foam baffling or was that purchased separately?
Purchased separately ... you can find that baffle stuff at most hardware stores. It just sticks on to the panels
I have seen metal roofs that dips between the studs. How do you prevent this from happening?
Horizontal strapping
Overlapping roof panels? Screw location and interval?
Overlap one rib not two. I put a screw in each valley
Do they make a whole kit with everything you need to do the metal roof Over?
Some lumber yards will order everything for you ... talk to the supply guy
Do the sheet come in one size or do you have to order them a certain size
Order the length you need
Did you use any kind of sealant tape on your lap joints?
No, I've never seen any tapes like that ... it couldn't hurt but the general idea that I've always followed is that the lap itself keeps the water out, and the seams are vertical so water doesn't want to flow sideways all that much. Expansion and contraction might negate any such tape anyway
Hi, how do you fix a sheet when the roof runs out of square and the valley overlaps the roof edge about halfway down the roof, hence water would be channeled over the edge if cut to size? Thanks
Careful cutting and valleys are tough with metal … I’d have to see it to help
how do I send a picture?
@@martinconlin2154 you can email me if you want ... no guarantee I'll have a solid answer for ya ... metaspencer at gmail
Good deal, If you have never sunk that type of screw before practice with your driver first and get it set. I've seen too many drove in too deep, which negates the whole idea of having a rubber gasket on the screw.
Oh yeah, so true ... they can really get away from you if you floor it on the drill
Anything special for the spacing of the strapping?
24" seems to me to be customary, but you might want to check with your roofing materials company to see if they have specs to follow
Are those 1 by 4. That you lay before the metal
Yes but any dimensions work
Can I put new steel over curogated steel on my barn? It has a similar pitch to this
I’d add a frame of bracing between layers
@@metaspencer like perlines?
What happens if you use a sheet that is 8 inches short. And make a funky top piece is that professional. It recently happened to my son. Let me know cheers
Not professional but it happens. If a sheet is short just underlap another sheet to make up the difference
How much would all the supplies needed for this be. My garage is about the same size. Thanks. Great video.
Under $2k but wood has gone up lately
@@metaspencer Thank You
@JosLewisWood Carpenter That would depend entirely on who you hire. ... some. charge hourly and others by the job
@JosLewisWood Carpenter I don't know -- you'd have to call around. Depends on the area
What size strip board you using
I believe it was 1x3 on this one, but I've used 2x4 down to 1x2 depending
Nicevideo
Thank you!
Hay man how are you doing I was wondering are you still going to work on the school bus and painted it
My friend the paint job is going slow because I've had so many other jobs to do, but I'm still hoping to get it done soon!
@@metaspencer oh I see thanks man
do the screws go on the ridge or the flat area
People do it different ways -- on the ridge is better in terms of water infiltration but you've gotta be careful not to compress the ridge
How far apart are you placing the 1x4
I think we went with 24" but you could go even closer if you're worried about it
nice video...i have a quick question...i am working with my garage and its leaking..i found out that the wood (not a plywood)is very weak do i need to patch or remove it....shingles is like 35years old...my 1s time to do roofing...
Some would say remove but we just covered over the old roof
@@metaspencer im only worried if this will gonna cause of mold if i cover it...wood is very weak you can brake it with a finger...
@@randyrivera611 yeah, you need good air flow and strong wood underneath
@@metaspencer ok ill do that thanks...
This is great because I'm going over the old roof. And had no idea what kinda frame work to do to secure the metal to this is great!
Great video! May i ask what gauge metal this is?
It's been a while but I believe we used 26g on this one ... 26 and 29 are pretty common
Thank you!@@metaspencer
How do I get the metal panels to us to a two-story roof?
I've always climbed the ladder carrying one with a rubber glove
metaspencer Sounds dangerous
What happens if I don't use strapping?, I've taken the old shingles off so that it just screws into the wood of the garage I don't really see any difference
Moisture will build up under the steel roof. Metal bring condensation and without an air pocket under there it won't dry effectively. At least, that's what I've read and it makes sense to me
@@metaspencer thank you
metaspencer i am dumb to roofing so bare with me....with metal roofing is there more of a chance of lighting strikes? I have a mobile home that needs roofing but i am on a budget. I want metal roofing but am scared. Please help
Everything I've read says that metal roofing does not attract a lightning strike. With that said, some people will ground their roof for added safety in case a wire should come into contact with it.
@@metaspencer ok thank you for answering me. I appreciate it very much!!!
You ran your furring horizontal should you always run the furring that way?
Yeah to allow you to screw down and not have the roofing ripple or sag
I'm doing a shed roof that is 15 ft long and 9ft wide so if I run furring long wise have 4 long furring pieces on each side . So That's why I asked. Thanks
Makes sense
Wonder how well a roof like that would hold up under a cat 4 hurricane. I'm getting ready to do a front porch/deck and want to cover it.
I think you'd be impressed as long as you have solid fixture points and no big overhangs that the wind can get underneath
@@metaspencer Standing seam is very popular here. After Irma came thru, many asphalt roofs went standing seam.
@@antsquirly7654 Standing seam is without a doubt the best ... more expensive and required specialty tools to install, but it's great stuff
Ant Squirly if you’re gonna install metal on top of shingles like this, you really should use at least 4” screws or ring shanks and fasten down into the truss. Short smooth nails from a nail gun into sheathing will most likely rip up in very high winds. Furring strips will pull right out of the OSB.
Oh yeah, we shot ring shanks
What was final cost on materials, this was such a nice simple video, thank you!
prices were much lower when we did this roof ... but it cost about $3500 as I remember
@@metaspencer okay thank you I just want to do my two car garage so I appreciate the insight
@@UFCReno good luck with the project!
Excellent video! I have a similar roof that I would like tackle, the only difference is that I have a turbine vent installed on the roof. Any suggestions on how I would install the panels around it. Thanks.
After removing the turbine so you just have a round hole to cut, I've done vents like that two ways: just measure when you get to that panel, then cut the roofing. The other way to do it is to make a cardboard version first that you cut, just so you get it right
You could remove the turbine vent and install a ridge vent.
@@TheRealRougarou you bet! good point
OK,I have a question. Son built gorgeous post and beam barn, BUT we did't research the metal roof specs and now we have OSB and no way will the overlap on the metal panels line up with the rafters. So we are doing the strapping. My question is about the screw placement. I am not understanding what is a sufficient amount of space between the screws from the roof down to the edge. This would definitely affect number of horizontal straps, I am assuming. Barn is small - 15x11. One half of the roof is 18x 8 Also are you putting screws on both sides of the ridge? Thanks! Loved the video. Took 2 hours to find something a 60 year old woman could actually understand.
It’s gonna work out! Strapping every 2-3’ from ridge down is customary ...
Definitely screw down that ridge cap on both sides! You’ve got this
@@metaspencerI think she meant, “do you put a screw on each side of each ridge of the roof panels?”. As a woman, and not knowing that much about roofing, that’s what I assumed she meant. In other words, the ridges of the roofing, not the ridge peak for the top.
@@jenbear8652 yeah both sides need screws ... but you don't want to overdo it when it comes to screwing things down as each screw can become a future point of water infiltration. So just as many as the material seems to demand
@@metaspencer thank you!
Hey somebody tell me something on that strappy I knows he was using a nail gun I was told you those few screws can you use a 16 penny nail gun on a double wide mobile home. And as long as nailing to the rafters with a nail gun
Screws will always hold bette than nails, but either way you've gotta be sure you hit those joists/rafters
@@metaspencer another question the 1 by 4 strips should I go 2 foot center or 36th and Center
@@georgemanor6186 I've seen it done different ways but having them closer together is always stronger
@@metaspencer okay got one more question for you see I'm going to try to do this roof myself and get that grandson of mine up there to help me. Okay the preparation around the outside Eve the edges the drip rail it's on there now. Do I need to take that all down and put new flashing up there the metal flashing it's already got metal flashing up there. Or do I need to take that down because if I do that then I got to take my rain gutters off first do you follow what I'm trying to do what I'm trying to say. I'm trying to save a dollar but I don't know
Your new roof will be higher so it’ll need flashing... on the ends use the caps we used: very water tight. Near the gutters you may be able to get by as is. If you were in central Illinois I’d come over to help
So how long does it take for that roof to rot out under since there is no air flow?
Instantly! Haha ... nah it has air flow top and bottom.
@@metaspencer how do you figure there's supposed to be foam under the ribs that block it all out.
Well in this case the massive holes in the original roof help ventilation ☺️ ... also the foam job was far from air tight. From what I’ve seen rot hits underlayment wood when poorly ventilated underneath
As a single woman I will be attempting this on my own on a mobile home , do you have any videos that show close up on how far your screw down the screws, and do you screw down the edges along outter wall down to a 2x4 ..if any of this makes any sense
You can definitely do this job! As for the screws, just compress the washer a bit but don't go too far. You don't want to over tighten them and completely crush the washer. Just practice with a few screws on a 2x4 and you'll get the feel of it. You want to screw down the edges, but I usually use a piece of edge trim to hold the roofing down and make a watertight seal on the edges.
Can you roof over a shake roof..
as long as you have a solid roof and can lay down level, flat strapping you should be in good shape. Just make sure you connect down below the shakes
Hi there how much do you pay for all materials??
This was before prices went up so much, so it was much cheaper then
Any ideas when the next bus video will be. 👍
I thought it was going to be this week, but I had another big construction job come up ... so I'm hoping NEXT week! painting, which should be fun :)
metaspencer thanks a lot ;)
Just had Hy Grade Roofing install a metal roof at my house. Worst decision I could have made. They promised to install the roof in 4-6 weeks, of course they were late. When they finally showed up without the proper equipment and damaged my property. They are really proud of the “Quality Audit” that they do, but of course they won’t give you a copy of the audit…lol BTW -the “Quality Audit” they did at my house consisted of 2 guys coming over to pickup the leftover junk they left at my house for a month. They never even went up on the roof! Save your money use someone else!
Wow, that sounds like a nightmare. Sorry to hear and I hope you get a quality roof on soon. Good luck!
I would have not cut that at the ridge cap but would have let it hang over and given more protection to the sides
I can see what you mean ... great idea man
Do you pre drill panels?
If you need to get the holes started, an awl is a big help. Just tap it with a hammer then insert the screw. I usually just push the screw in without the awl but it takes practice. amzn.to/3m2236d
@@metaspencer thku
I'm guessing if you have gutters you have to take them off before you put out the roof
That's a good idea if possible
What does a roof like that labor wise run? Looks great btw.
A day or two in labor costs for 2 guys, but the total all depends on the crew size
What was cost of materials
Prices have gone up considerably since the pandemic/2020, but cost for this project at this time was under $3k
I’m amazed this video is the first recommended video. Really not sure anyone that actually is in the roofing field learned a tip or trick that wasn’t completely common sense
Definitely not intended as a video for folks in the roofing field, but more the farmer or garage owner who might want to DIY his or her first roof. Happy roofing!
Before you screw the panels down Can you stand on them without having them slide off the roof?
No way. Don't even try it. The panels will slide like crazy
metaspencer Ok, I won’t.
🤣🤣🤣🤔
Great video. You're a hard working man. But your arm looks very painful, and sore . You should probably cover that.
I just noticed that in the video! It's actually a burn that I got on a previous welding job and it's fortunately healed up by now. I know: kind of gross to see in the video! :) Anyway, thanks for checking out the project
What brand of roofing do you recommend please?
I've used four different brands and never had a problem with any of them. Pro-Rib is what we used in this project. Whatever you can get locally will likely be good stuff
@@metaspencer is it necessary to apply any treatment to the shingled roof being covered over? I'm concerned about moss, etc.
Depends on your situation. On a house repairs to the roof are key
You said the plywood was soft in a spot. Why not replace it before you cover it up with metal rather than throw another good piece over it. Just seems like cutting corners.
Yeah this is a little used farm building and the owner didn't want to go with a full, new layer of sheathing. So yeah, we did some quick fixes on this job by patching holes and roofing over the patches. With that said, water is now being kept out 100% so that's a big improvement.
even those 3 to 4 brrrrrp brrrp's off those torque guns is 2 tight lol..... those rubber bungs sure do get messed up it torqued too tight ;/
yeah, don't wanna over smoosh them. Good point!
Why not just remove the shingle ridge cap instead of placing all that wood?
I'm not sure how that would have helped in this situation ... what wood removal are you talking about? At what point in the video?
😯👍👍👍👌
Do you still respond i need to ask a question thanks
Yes what’s up?
@@metaspencer What would be the best way to put a new metal roof, over top of an existing metal roof?
