    I always strip off the singles. Gives a chance to see the sheathing. It only takes a hour or so. Then I ice and water guard the entire roof b4 doing the perlins/rain screen. If it's a house I add 2" poly iso to dampen the sound of the rain. Especially if it's a cathedral ceiling inside. Makes a huge difference

    I spent many a year in sheet metal and green handle snips are lefts and red are rights its about which side of the work you're on, also in the future when working with offsets( m6&m7) it pays to lean the snips like a sailboat when cutting they dont like being perpendicular to the work which is different from regular snips(m1&m2) that want to be at right angles to the work . I was curious as to why you didnt leave any overhang off the roof on the bottom seems like it would've helped keep moisture out of the fascia 's better.

    • @metaspencer
      @metaspencer  Před 4 lety

      Oh boy those snips have driven me crazy for years -- thanks for the tips! I totally see what you mean now and that's a big help. We left a 2" overhang at the bottom of the roof which should allow the water to shed away without wicking back via capillary action. I've left more before, like 6" ... and then heard rattling in strong winds ... so we went with a bit less on this one where winds are VERY strong. Thanks man!

    Thanks for a great video. I have a couple questions;
    1. Can the roof panels be lapped horizontally if the panel are short to the ridgeline?
    2. What's the spacing on the 1x battens and at the ridge.
    Thank you.

    • @metaspencer
      @metaspencer  Před 4 lety

      Hey, good to hear from you. I have lapped roof panels the long way, that that's not ideal because water can wick back up in there. Make sure you have a big lap, like a foot or so, if you end up doing this. More slope to your roof will help if you end up lapping the long way. As for the battens at the ridge, it depends on the width of your ridge cap. Space them so you can get a good connection to the battens through the ridge cap. Happy roofing!

    • @metaspencer
      @metaspencer  Před rokem

      That's really hard to put a number on given how much location affects price -- I'd imagine between $3k and $6k just as a wild guess, but you'd need more than just roofing for a house. You'll need trim pieces as well, screws, roof cap, etc.

Starting inside my house the ceiling is 9mm pine boards,then 18mm OSB boards,then 200mm Rockwool insulation, then some foil paper( turns out it’s not waterproof) then my metal sheets… so will I get condensation issues? I live in france we get icy, snowy weather at times lots of rain and also sun!

    Just finished redoing a flat roof that had water penetration in ceiling, this was tearing off existing epdm with gravel etc,this was at least ten yrs with a new membrane..anyway it was redone but it still is flat and I ended up going up on th roof and dumping sitting water i would like to ask yo if i can put on a tiltwedge type extension so to allow rainwater to flow off....as this is the best way to go as the roofer were not going with a pitch which is
    my fault and obviously was more work getting into a framing..so my question is why not have a preconstructed wedge made out of metal lightweight to rid myself of the ponding problem,yes..

    • @metaspencer
      @metaspencer  Před 3 lety

      I think this is a great idea, as flat roofs are always a problem. With that said, you'll need to frame the new roof structure to adequately handle the load, wind sheer, etc. It can certainly be done but will take some engineering. Great idea, though.

I have a coated standard galvanized roofing panel grey colour. Wondering where I should place the screws and how far apart . Also does it matter for a low pitch roof if the panels are placed horizontal or vertical . Thanks

    • @metaspencer
      @metaspencer  Před rokem

      There is plenty of debate out there about where to place the screws -- high or low. I always do it low but I'm not gonna say that's the best method. The main thing is not to over compress the screw gaskets. As for direction you always need the panels running "vertical" or with the pitch of the roof. Otherwise water will get in the seams no matter the pitch

    • @metaspencer
      @metaspencer  Před 4 lety

      Yeah, the trusses are exposed inside with no attic ... and venting isn't a problem because much of the barn/shed is open to a chicken coop and whatnot on one end. But yes: in your case venting will be important to keep heat and moisture down. Good luck with it!

      I've installed the roofing both ways, with and without the strips. If you leave them out you may get snow and ice up in there, if you live in a cold climate. So we are doing the strapping. My question is about the screw placement. I am not understanding what is a sufficient amount of space between the screws from the roof down to the edge. This would definitely affect number of horizontal straps, I am assuming. Barn is small - 15x11. One half of the roof is 18x 8 Also are you putting screws on both sides of the ridge? Thanks! • @metaspencer
      @metaspencer  Před 3 lety

      You can definitely do this job! As for the screws, just compress the washer a bit but don't go too far. You don't want to over tighten them and completely crush the washer. Just practice with a few screws on a 2x4 and you'll get the feel of it. You want to screw down the edges, but I usually use a piece of edge trim to hold the roofing down and make a watertight seal on the edges.
