Faced with empty nest syndrome and changing social structures as China’s population ages, many of Shanghai’s senior citizens have turned an Ikea canteen into an unlikely dating site. A group of senior singles has been gathering weekly at the Swedish furniture giant’s Xuhui outlet in the city’s southwest. While some might be lucky enough to find a companion, for most, it’s simply a chance to ease their loneliness by being part of the crowd.

"So, what do you think about this sofa design?" A tough question to gauge each other's compatibility.
elderly ppl got more rizz than me :((((
They got more game than anyone can ever have 😂😂
Stop watching skibidi toilet and touch some grass man
@@ootts456he didn't say anything about skibidi, it WAS used by those kids so much that when locals use it, its weird now
@@Trisniakhtar I can assure you these people are def watching skibidi
@@ootts456 they're watching it because its fun to watch, unlike those kids who make it their entire personality
If a couple can make it in IKEA, they can make it anywhere.
No! If you make it in IKEA, you won't be able to get it home. Better to carry it home, then make it there. 😉
My first date was in ikea. Now we are married.xD
I would love a social hangout for students like this.
There's plenty .....they're called the Mall's!
bruh just talk. The library, shopping complex, cafeteria even on the parks. You're just being nervous and afraid to talk to open up a small conversation. Asking the time or the weather should be the first step to getting know about each other
It's called the campus
@@Sastrak grandpa times are different now🤦♂. If you talk to somebody in cafeteria you gonna be called stalker
@@ocean440calling someone stalker without legit reasons seems immature at least and more on the malicious personality side....seek adults with a healthy mindset like hiking groups or bouldering facilities or museums or any creative Hotspot I guess
This is so wholesome, more news like this please!
wholesome? most of these oldies have STIs
Free refills has that effect on people.
They are bringing their own food lol
Chinese aunties and uncles are shameless like that
Self brought snacks... 😂😂 ikea manager be like - 🤬🤬
That's typical in China. Restaurants usually don't have the "No outside foods" rule.
@@zhouray😮
@@D.2601And here they tell you not to eat take out in their restaurant even you have ordered many of their dishes at the table. Pretty annoying.

To be more precise, it is a Chinese restaurant in western country.
Happy couples are a result of mutual affection and understanding, so friendship is a great place to start. Plus all the couples come from the same social group here. Great way to have a social network.
This is a great idea. Researches show depressi0n is high among the elders, só hanging out is a way of keeping the loneliness away. Also very brave and mature to be able to speak about it and not BE assumes of feeling and foghting against it. Humans are, generally speaking, social beings after all
Taking over the ikea cafeteria is not lol
@@Neo-nw7fo if they’re consuming, i dont see why it would be a problem
I live in Shanghai, and I go to this ikea about once every three months. The restaurant is absolutely packed with elderly people every time I go there, and I can be a bit annoying at times because they would just buy a cup of coffee and sit there for hours on end.
Lol don't go on Tuesdays then xD
I got a croissant and coffee too, isn't fasting a healthier way of living?
Mr. Wang's eyebrows on fleek! I am ashamed to say mine looks terrible and I am more than a dozen years younger and a woman.
Ikea better make an ad campaign based on this, marketing do you hear me??? 😂
It's not financially sound to offer free coffee if people go there just for that and not buy any other things. What Ikea should do instead is coffee at discount at certain time period. Otherwise people will sit there all day and genuine diners will be deprived of seats.
Is pretty hard to do consider their respect elderly culture, may be they are still making money even with this going on. Old people don't really drink that much but the seating is a problem for other people who want to have a meal there. It is still better than bunch of kids and teenagers hanging out there, i would prefer this instead.
Location is also an issue. In Spain we get free coffee at Ikea, but Ikeas are generally a bit 'out of the way'. Half hour out of the city centre by metro, and you have to walk through a mall to get there. You don't go there just for the coffee. If it were at street level on a busy city block, sure it would fill up with people who just wanted coffee. 😅
It’s fine ikea will still earn, i doubt they are very concerned about their cafe losing profits it’s not their main money maker after all. Reputation means a lot also.
Looks like someone forgot to charge their microphones
"Come here. Sit. What do you think of this two seater, right here?"
"Let's check out the bedroom displays shall we?"
Oh yeah, I know what these geezers are up to.
In Singapore the IKEA canteen is Packed by 11am..there are some who stay there for hours because the coffee is refillable.. and just sit there drinking coffee with friends.. and it's annoying that ppl who actually come for lunch can't find seats.
Although Ikea meatballs are renowned, I don't know why you'd want to purposely eat lunch at an Ikea. dafuq?
It's really cheap that's why
Even through late night.. still packed
IKEA open late in Singapore? And still packed? Here in 🇺🇸 IKEA is closed and empty before sunset, because of all the shoplifters and the robberies.
@@yank-blood-no-eat-getThe difference is we will catch all the shoplifters and robbers in Singapore
Ikea has a nice idea
How nice to have that. 😊
Absolutely.
The trouble with finding love at IKEA is that the instructions are incomprehensible, and by the time that you've "got it together", there are a few bits left over! 😝
Finding love at Ikea. Revolutionary lol
Endearing. I am cheering them on to find friends and enjoy the company of each other.
Sound is broken?
Wish them all the best! ❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️
The sound quality of the video is very bad. Please review before uploading.
Why is the interview audio so bad? It's ruining my ears!
so IKEA should open some other similar shops in Shanghai and around to help old people find each other ...
Ikea should nothing. It is government who should
I always see that ikea was living and working in Shanghai but had never went inside since I never had need to buy something there.
In borneo some supermarket yard became a sport dance morning routine for elderly when the shop open they come to buy in supermrket
Where lol, I lived in Borneo for years but I’ve never seen that before. I kinda wanna see them if I go back
No but this is actually adorable.
A date at an IKEA is a great cheap date idea.
The couple having shared activities:
like trying to find the toilets or the shortest way out.
You can see how your date handles frustration when tired or when they have to go.
So cuuuuuuteeeeeeeee ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I'm looking forward to when the video music is less stress even with lovely videos like these.
What happens to the sounds.. 😴
This what happens when you offer free coffee in China, Ikea. 😂
"Hey, gurl. You look as fine as the latest Ikea loveseat."
In India, we don't waste time on small talk, we grape 🤗
This used to happen at my local mall too before the mall decided to take away the benches in the hallways.
Lovely ❤
Chinese auntie and uncle are so chatty. I can't do this kind of thing even if im young lol
Dude knows what he is doing but not on his hair.
Wow now you can find a partner that you just have to put together at ikea 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
All these benches without back support...it's not the easiest spot to convene on!
Everyone needs some loving or friendship.
Old is gold😂
When I'm feeling really down about myself
This is cool. Life doesn’t end at 70 ❤
Here in malaysia the only reason i go to ikea is the free drink refills lol, each time i order they lose profit.
The chyna DaMa is indispenable. 🤣🤣🤣
Lingonberry served with a side of linkin' berry . . .for older folks. New ikea product: kønnëktiön 😅😅😅😂
🥰adorable
"Let me show you my hysterectomy scars".
What type of marketing Ikea did there to attractions these eldery people ? Maybe thé love market IS something Ikea should consider now in china.
My local Ikea would not tolerate people blocking seats and tables in the restaurant all day, especially when they bring their own food. 😮
I get it socializing at an old age is important, but respect the paying customers trying to find a spot to eat at the Ikea canteena too
is it just me or are the voices not audible for the first man, third man and the fourth man?
1:11 thats a ten dollar wig and 2 dollar eyebrow pencil
Well…I am happy for them at least they are not interfering with others life by playing loud music in early mornings or evenings.
Please give the voices back to the people. Can't hear what they say
just like every ikea item, bring home, fix it yrself and discard after use.

Time for me to visit my local IKEA!😉
The hair dye industry in China is doing well.
So cute
its so sad cuz ive seen countless cases of older generation being lonely and feeling like a loss of connection.
Start the car! Woooooo
I didn't even know old people dated
And here i am, a sucker dating this girl tonight at this Spanish restaurant costing HK$400 per person...
And that’s why you don’t offer free things….
So basicly this ikea is a place where you can make a friend request
Oh...I don't know...I can't see myself playing with 70 year old wedding tackle....
Great idea. Let's start it in Germany. IKEA, lovely: This is social responsibility. Thank you. ❤❤❤

I’ve heard about People’s Park in numerous videos, but having this in IKEA is embarrassing and sounds like a headache for actual shopping customers
Well, Ikea already has a Smolland for kids to play in while their parents shop, maybe they should have an Altland. ;)

I've never seen a man with visible foundation and brow work done. Looks so odd!
Every single free space are occupied by lovely elder generation... I love it😂
I feel living quality in Shanghai is better than Hong Kong.
Well, Shanghai was quite cheap before, now it was just expensive but still better than in Hongkong though
@@justgado2772 Do you know most HK people live in tiny apartment about 20-40 sq m2? Some people even live in cage?
@@harrysmith8515 I do. My extended family are Hongkong er. The 4 of them lived in cramped one bedroom apartment. One of the kid had to squish in into the bed that installed in the living room (looks like a capsule hotel with shutter). That is family with middle income. Imagine the lower income who is living in coffin home 😰.
I was living in Shanghai for study and work for a decade, I saw the development of Shanghai since they only have 2 lines of mrt. Back then Shanghai was cheap to live in. The last time I visited was in 2022, the place became quite expensive but it is cheaper than living in Hongkong. I mostly go to HK just to visit family or for work purposes.
If they can walk around the whole of ikea without sitting down to rest, then they've got enough stamina for a relationship 😉
Do they have enough community centres for the elderly in shanghai? So they don't have to hang out at Ikea, it is someone's private business after all. The canteen is for people who shop there.
this is a self-thought comment
