- After a fun boat trip at sea, Kimi Werner brings home the uku (grey snapper/jobfish) she speared while freediving to cook over an open fire for her mother. But first she must forage for the ingredients to make a macadamia nut pesto with lots of island flavors. This episode shows a lot of harvesting from the land and a little glimpse of the ups and downs of caring for an elderly parent in her final stage of life. Food, forage, family- it’s what keeps us going.

I tried not to cry when you were holding Buddy and explaining to your mama how you caught the fish for her and how you prepared it. I wasn’t ready. So I ended up tearing up. He’s going to grow up to be so healthy, not allergic to everything and anything, loving and respecting the the land and sea.. but also just a man filled with love and flowing out to others. I also live in the Bay Area, but there are a lot of Bay Area hippies just like her and raising their babies in similar fashion, especially the climbing, camping, and mushroom hunting community. Not everyone is a mean suburb mom :)

Your mum is such a darling, I think she got up because she knew the effort you put into that fish for her. In New Zealand we call sweet potatoes, Kumara, white ones that are blue inside we call Hawaiian blues.

I am a Filipino Canadian Musician who went to O'ahu island on last year's "Hawaiian Music Festival" and instantly fell in love with Hawaii. I have to admit, it's haunting me to go back. With my Ukulele group here in Toronto, we decided to join the 2021 Ukulele Music Festival but unfortunately, COVID-19 did not give us the opportunity to be there.
