Corsa instrument cluster upgrade in the FLOODED 1965 Corvair Monza 110!

  • On today's video, we're refurbishing the Corsa instrument cluster that was graciously donated to us by Michael Trimmier. We show the process of breaking down the cluster, cleaning the gauges and refurbishing the cove surround. However...we're doing it in silver rather than the black the Corsa originally came with.
    Make sure to watch until the very end of the video because there's an easter egg about a coming project for the car, one that I am SUPER excited about.

    Fascinating, i had a Rover Sd1 that had a clock , found out it was affected by a film of nicotine by the previous owner , used swabbing and isopropyl and it freed up over time

    It looks great. I just bought a second Corvair and am very happy with how much fun they are. Glad to see another Vair enthusiast enjoying them! The community for these cars is honestly one of the best communities to be in for classic cars as they are always supportive and welcoming.     That Manifold vacuum gauge was used primarily in the Turbocharged cars as a boost gauge. The cylinder temperature gauge goes up quite quickly if the fan belt is thrown off. If you have it overheat, there is a buzzer somewhere, (maybe in the gauge) which is a better notifier because you can't miss it. My Spyder would throw the belt when drag racing and it felt like you just got 15 more horsepower, but best to shut off the engine soon. I really enjoy your CZcams videos.

    I ❤️ Corvairs. They were an amazing product of advanced engineering. I am seeking a 67-69 110. The engine you did is key. Better than new. Never go back. lol.

    That silver looks great! I like the '65 Monza silver dashes much better than the black versions. When the previous owner put the Corsa dash in my '66 Monza, he removed the clock and installed a second cylinder head temp gauge. I assume he wanted to monitor head temp on each head individually, but he did not rig up a second sender. That picture looks like a MAF sensor, and if so I like where you are heading with that...

    Silver is a nice color. When I did my cluster the wrinkle paint didn't wrinkle well anyways, so going a different direction works out.

    Best to mask the housing around the ground stud on both the interior and exterior surfaces before painting as the electronics are grounded through the housing.

    Bezel surrounds weren't black, to begin with, but bright chrome look with the crinkle black fascia. I don't mind you making the fascia silver. It should look pretty good:) The clock used a solenoid to pop the winder and the points get burned after a while. That is the main problem and the best fix is the quartz replacement. I used to fix the clocks myself for guys that wanted it the way the factory did it. Expensive and difficult to do though. Quartz is the better and cheaper route. Those red washers are insulators.

    Great job on the dash! I was going to say if left in Monza configuration, unless overtly trying to keep it original, paint it black like the 66 - 69 because I think in that configuration it looks better (hides use/aging better, IMO). But, it is unique in this Corsa-guage configuration to be silver, so I think it looks great. Tip on upgrading the Monza dash if not doing a Corsa conversion: replace the outsized--and too prominent location--clock with a Stewart Warner tach. My recollection is that they make or made one that just happens to fit right in there and looks just about stock. Then, just find any location, under dash, etc, for a modern clock if that function is still important to you.
    You may be already past this but... Since the 2 carb motors didn't have a cylinder head temp unit, I'm not sure they have a boss or detent for one? My memory is fuzzy on this, it's been 40 years and folks/Clarks, etc, may have a workaround now, but we didn't know of one - so we found out the hard way by d&t'ing where the 140 unit "would be" (but on a 110)--there was a "boss" of sorts there--to install the sending unit, of course ;) and, unbeknownst to us at the time, broke into the combustion chamber! The explanation later, don't recall the veracity, was that the 140 heads supposedly were a little bit thicker in that combustion chamber area, vs our 110's?.. So, about 300 mi into a 1000 mile road trip, compression blew that out and we lost power on exactly 1/2 the motor (the hole must've scavenged things enough to kill/mess-up vacuum enough to (effectively) lose compression on the whole cylinder bank! Still was able to limp it 100 miles (over a mountain!) to the next civilization--what a motor and car! A friendly local Corvair mechanic was about to tear everything down for a blown head gasket, is what we all thought happened--sure acted and sounded like, when he peered into the shrouding underneath and found the sending unit laying peacefully there! Just to get us underway (vacationing) he threaded a bolt up in there to get us back power, telling us "just don't run the heater the rest of your trip!" as the temporary bolt fix no doubt still seeped at least a little bit of gasses. When we got home we heliarc'd that hole shut and just said goodbye to the idea for the time being,.. and it turned out a 140 transplant ensued a few months later anyway. So, beware! We just may not have investigated the external parts of the 110 cylinder head enough for a better location, or unwittingly just drilled 1/4" too far, though we thought we measured everything 10x before--dumb s****--... but make doubly sure!!

    Shawn, the tach in my '79 Suburban did a crazy thing. It would sweep the entire field and then go back to the correct reading. come to find out, a solder joint was not tight. I took the small PCB out, re-soldered all the solder joints, re-assembled the whole thing, and it worked perfectly.

      It does work smoothly it just seems like it reads high. I need to put in another tach to verify it's working correctly.

    OK, Sean, the main word I have for this video is OUTSTANDING! I do have quite a but of experience over the years with our "waterless wonders". I have no issue with changing the dash color, NONE of my Corvairs are painted in a stock color! The 65 Monza dashes were all silver, the 65 Corsa dashes were all wrinkle finish black, and a thin stripe around the fascia was left unpainted (that is, silver), but in 66, the whole dash was painted black. Did you repaint the glove box door and surround to get rid of the wrinkle finish to match? Also, whenever I have the "tunnel" under the car open to add wires, I ALWAYS put in extra wires for future use- electric fuel pump, cruise control, extra gauges, high-speed heater blower (need an extra wire for a relay to avoid melting the fan switch), etc. LEDs to replace the dim original bulbs is a good idea, but DO NOT use an LED for the Gen/Fan light- the load of the incandescent bulb is part of the circuit. I've got a few more things to say, but the wife is telling me to get off the computer, so Auf Weidersehen for now.

    Its your car so don't listen to the naysayers...my 66 Kinda w factory air and factory 140 engine. I painted it plum crazy on the upper half and classic white on the lower half so both sides of the dash were plum crazy...friend customized the dash cluster w oil temp, cylinder head temp, voltage and oil pressure...much better than stock.

    I hope you realize that the speedo had its own calibration separate from the other 'Vairs and that it required a specific tire diameter to work properly. All '65 and later cars are driven off the left front(drivers side) wheel.

      I run 15s and the Speedo matches GPS exactly...I think stock is pretty far off gps.

    My 70 Challenger clock works like that. It will run for weeks or months and quit until it's taken out and cleaned.

      Shockingly, it's still working (although it's running fast). I need to take it back out and see if I can adjust it to work a bit slower.

    I had a '66 Riviera that had the same clock problem, especially in the winter. My clock stopped, took it out gave it to the dealer to have repaired, installed it. A month later, the same problem. I stopped fooling with it!

    Really nice and meticulous job with the instrument cluster. Hope you are able to get the tachometer working, as knowing the engine RPM is valuable.

      Thank you, and the tachometer works fine...it just has a large sweep so it looks like you're turning a lot of RPM. I'd be interested in putting another tach in the car temporarily to compare the accuracy. May do that if I get bored!

    I know wiring harnesses aren't cheap, but by making your own, trouble shooting in the future will be a nightmare as the colors won't be the same as the wiring diagram. This is why my my Corvair is as close to factory, I can find the problems as know what parts to get.

      I hear you, and if this car goes to another person in the future then I'll have a lot of paperwork that will need to go with it. If it were a rare model then I would feel obligated to keep it original.

    OK Sean, got my '69 model yesterday. Just looking at the parts and reading the instructions, yes, I'm one of those who actually read before anything else, I saw the assembly phase just shows black color for the entire engine, starter included. does the engine have any colors other than black? Thank' so much. I'm like you, I build a vehicle for me, not everyone else. You'd love my current car. A Scion xB with blacked out wheel covers, diff grille, LED's thru out, HID head lights, even re-EQ'd the radio to match this model.

    If I couldn't get the clock to work, I'd either set it to 4:20 or add a different gauge (multifunction/fuel range, trip odometer, etc...)? ;-)

      It's working well enough for now. I'll probably replace the (essentially) non-functional vacuum gauge with something else.

    This is awesome to see the corsa dash in the monza! I did the same thing to my grandpas 65 PG, however the speedo isn’t working. Any ideas where I could start looking to fix that?

      My first thought is the dust cap on the left front wheel. It's what drives the speedo cable and the drive mechanism is plastic.

    I’ve had two Corsas with the factory tach and to me your tach looks to read high compared to the RPM I am hearing. Mine were both 140hp.
    I thought the teaser might be fuel injection, but was that an a/c compressor I spotted? Will have to look again.😎
    As usual, great video……seeing you row those gears makes me really miss my Corsa. Maybe it’s time to revisit…👍🏼🍺
    (Edit) OK, after freezing the teaser, I have no clue what that is!😜🤷🏼‍♂️but I am excited to find out…..😎

      It sounds high to me as well, might need to temporarily install another tach to verify the RPM. The teaser is not AC, although with the temps being >95 lately that would be a welcome addition.

    I've got an EM monza 900 convertible that is a whole lot of fun. I just came into a really really nice Spyder cluster. Was thinking about subbing out the boost gauge and head temp gauge for a voltage and exhaust temp gauge. Did you keep your mileage when you installed the speedo? I want to keep mine accurate (its got 46K) so I need to add about 10K to the Spyder. Can you swap out the tumblers?

      I would think (legally), as long as the mileage is the same it shouldn't matter what gauge is physically used. You can remove the mileage wheels relatively easily with the cluster apart.

      @@AutoAnatomy Sorry I just saw this! I would love to but I'm like a year behind at the mo due to high work load! It seems that nobody want's to do this stuff anymore. On top of this I have at least twenty of my own clocks to do plus a few auto gauges and three cars to restore. My projects are going to outlive me! I should really start a CZcams channel! 😀

    It's better to have a daily driver vs a trailer queen.
