It’s weird seeing someone telling Tony what to do.
Jaegar Ultima Jackie had no heir. Tony became Boss because the other capos respected him more. Junior despite being that old guy was one nobody respected that much for some reason. He was too much a comedic figure for all the Capos to respect him the way they respected and feared Tony.

@@peepawthecat Gearing up for WW2 got every country out of the great depression. Also, the fact that you describe the expulsion and genocide of Jewish, gypsy, LGBTQ, handicapped, etc. as kicking out the tribe that stifled his countrymen is pretty fucked up and incorrect considering that they were German and Hitler wasn't and that they held no more power in society than anyone else. I think most Germans would agree now that the country would have been better off with someone less evil, selfish, and dumb because it wouldn't have been split into two countries for the 45 years following his death.
Jackie had less than 6 minutes of screentime but he made every second count. Really says a lot about Michael Rispoli's acting ability. I can see why David Chase considered him for the lead role because he's such a natural that can portray a wide range of emotions.
I actually think it wasn’t Rispoli’s acting ability what kept him from the main part. It was his type of personality. His natural swagger if you will. He’s much more of a sophisticated man than the lead part needed. He’s amazing as the natural leader, yes, but the volatile temper of the lead part needed someone flawed. Rispoli just isn’t that.

Jackie was a fantastic character. Calm, levelheaded, firm without being a dick, charismatic and generally speaking, friendly. Not to mention, he was specifically chosen by Old Man DiMeo to be the boss, which says a lot. Wonderfully acted by Michael Rispoli, and it’s a shame that he died so early in the show.
Take it easy
@@michaelcollins237 How am I supposed to? The guy was just a kid, he died too soon
There wouldn’t be a show if he hadn’t died- 90% of the drama came from how Tony handled things.
Jackie represents a happier time in Tony's life.
Yup and their friend Ralph was the opposite. Notice his hair was the same color as Jackie's only he represented the worst a mobster could be
That's how much of a natural jackie was. Hell of a character he sells it so great. You can tell That's a leader man very capable of telling even someone like Tony what to do. Which is why Tony loved and respected him so much. Wish we had least one season with him as boss. I wonder why chase didn't do it?.
I think Tony has a more "soldier like" personality. He even talks about it to Dr. Milfy ("We're Soldiers"). Also, Junior was better consigliere than boss; but both couldn't maintain these status
@@Nothing-jo8ciJackie as Boss, Junior as Consiglerie with Sil as his aid and Tony as Underboss. It would have run perfectly.
Let's face it Tony never had the makings of a varsity Boss. He was too messy and emotionally impulsive
@@Nothing-jo8cireminds me of a triad movie where the main actor started out as a captain but somehow rose through the ranks to become the boss, only to lose his woman and best friend, he talks about how the good old days were before he took the "throne" and he wishes he could go back to those days.
I think that Jackie Sr. was Tony's only real friend, whom he respected as a person. Apart from Silvio, Pussy and Artie. Right there when Jackie died, there was none of that "What are you gonna do" Tony used to pass off other the deaths of other people. He cried sincerely, and also he got really mad to Jackie Jr. for playing a gangster against his father's wishes.
Tony got more and more sociopathic as the show went on, I believe in the earlier seasons he had more humanity and genuinely cared for a few people close to him, but by the end I think the only 2 people he cared for were his kids and that was it.
Only then apart. You bend more rules than the Catholic Church.

Jackie (Michael Rispoli) was a childhood friend of mine when we were 15-16 years old (1974-1975). Holy shit, is this where Jackie Jr. got the idea to rob the card game that eventually got him killed? From Ralph?
Yes
@Dick Cheney Dick
Jimmy Olsen ova heer
And it was Ralph's game to boot. As low level a game there is, Jackie figured Ralph like his step dad so that's a pass, being Jackie jr. gets him a pass and Tony would finally have to take notice of the steel balls and ambition of Jackie Jr. Poor kid but he always was stupid about drowned in 3 inches of water.
This Jackie Jnr kid is a loose fuckin cannon.
From what little we see of him, Jackie Aprile seems a lot more professional than Tony. Compare the way they dress. Jackie dresses like a businessman - like the CEO of a company. Tony dresses like a small time thug most of the time. You never saw Tony wear a tie clip and scarf. Now, compare also their personalities. Jackie seems level headed, calm, and decisive. Even when he's sick with cancer during the sitdown with Junior and Tony, he doesn't get emotional or angry like Tony would during sitdowns. He shuts Tony and Junior open and makes a decisive ruling, while basically giving Tony and Junior the leeway to figure out the details - whereas Tony tended to micromanage EVERYTHING. Tony let his personal feelings about his guys guide his decisions - for example passing Ralph over for Captain because he disliked him, even though Ralph was bringing in money by the truckload. Jackie also seemed to care about his underlings, or at least made the appearance of caring about them- Tony never offered to help out a Soldier financially, and made it clear he didn't give a shit about their lives. When Puss mentions his money problems, Jackie offers him money as Boss. It's a token gesture that instills personal loyalty - The Boss gives a shit. When Gigi mentions his life and money problems to Tony, Tony basically shuts him up.
There is a clear difference in style, manner and leadership. Jackie was the leader that could've taken the Family's prospertiy into the 21st century. Tony was a thug who became Boss and destroyed it.
With Jackie Aprile as boss the show would have ended in season 2 due to boredom. That’s why Jackie had to Go! David Chase is ruthless.
@@coenfilm nah he was cooler, he was just made die due to health reasons lol
Perfectly put. Jackie was someone who's rational side managed to control his animalistic side, when the opposite is true of Tony. Tony even deludes himself into killing his own surrogate children, which makes him worse than even his mother.
Livia was always wrong, but history and what actually transpired makes her sound right in hindsight. Her son ultimately ended up the way she wanted; a monster.
Jackie was a good boss and a great earner but Tony was definitely smarter than him ray even said that Dimeo pegged him for boss and had Johnny Soprano not died he probably would have taken over
@@johnpauldriskill8737 How does that make Tony smarter?
“Always wanted a house by the ocean.......maybe in another life” this show was so great with foreshadowing.
Paul Evans wasn’t that a flashback scene?
championdesigns yeah I'm pretty sure this flashback occurred after pussy was whacked. So it's good writing, but not foreshadowing bc pussy was already at the bottom of the ocean
@@championdesigns yep
Oh , did his corpse float into the front door of a nice beach house? I missed that.
That was a flashback scene that was shown AFTER Pussy's death. So it's not foreshadowing. It's backshadowing.
That’s honestly the only time Tony cries because of a humans death.... in the whole series
Between this and pussy turning in to a rat, I think it really broke him and turned him in to a full fledged sociopath
he cries when matt and shawn shoot christawfer
He cried when AJ tried to "kill" himself.
He holds back tears with his last meeting with Junior.
@Jamie its Ralphie's fault she's a clutz??
Guy playing Jackie is such a good actor not in many scenes but you can feel his presence as the boss for sure especially surrounded by all these other incredible actors. Hats off
Yeah, Will Smith did great job in the role.
The scene outside Sartriale's is so haunting. He knows he's dying, and hearing his successors bicker back and forth he's getting more and more certain his life's work as a mobster is going to be following him into the grave.
I mean, he was probably a little "over" his job duties, but I doubt he was thinking like that. Was probably just thinking about the chemo and shit.

I draw a lot of comparisons between Jackie Sr and Carmine Sr here in how they do business. They're both cool, calm, yet not afraid to say "no" even to the most senior and highest ranking in their Families. Just the way he says, "Hey. Fuckk him. Is he gonna sit down or not?" He feels the insult but he does not let it show that it bothers him and goes straight back to business. Tony would have had steam coming out of his ears.
I would have loved to have saw a couple of episodes were we see a young Jackie aprile and a young Tony saprono coming up threw the mafia ranks would have been doped to see. Jackie has that cool calm and don't fuck with me type of demenour and especially had brains to have saw a scene with him and carmine sr sitting round a table talking abt business would have been really good to watch 👍

Jackie Sr. commanded such a respect from everyone but wasn't an authoritative prick about everything. For the little bit of time he was on the show, he seemed like such a better leader than Tony.
Tony was the smartest dude in the show but his temper and lack of empathy just wasn't boss worthy.
Often people like that become bosses in real life and eventually they run their companies into the ground with their self destructive nature.

'' i always wanted a house by the ocean... maybe in another episode.''
Tony would essentially give the greenlight on killing Jackie' son, help his sister get away with killing his brother, ordered the murder of his niece, and I assume Vito was related to Jackie in some way, Tony was all set to whack him too.
After Jackie passed, Tony set about destroying the family he left behind.
Tony really couldn't do anything about Jackie's relatives being assholes. Jackie Jr didn't want to stay out of the life and Richie literally crippled a guy, was selling drugs and beat on Tony's sister.
Those aren't recipes for a long life
Ro sleeping with Ralph, a big no-no in the mob, was overlooked by Tony cause Ralph was a big earner. Ironically, that lead to Ralph enabling Jackie Jr. by providing the gun that lead to his death. It's like Jr. was screwed either way
Jackie Sr. and Johnny Sac would have had some cool a$$ interactions
Whats this the handsome contest?
When you see how much Tony supposedly love Jackie Sr., It makes you realize what a betrayal it was to him not to have done a better job keep Jackie Jr. out of the business.
J.J. had natural talent for it. He would've joined Chris's crew and slowly go up the ranks, but his impatience and the Sopranos' parasitic existence ruined all chances of that happening.

Road 35 is there truth to what you said? A prequel?
Any man can be a king but only great men can ensure peace AND prosperity during his reign. Jackie was the best boss on the sopranos .
The 90s were a peaceful and prosperous time
Jackie was acting boss. He seemed like a more long-term boss, but he was actually only boss for a couple years. Tony seemed very content with him in charge and wanted the arrangement basically to continue indefinitely. He was sort of like an older brother to Tony whom he admired, respected and fundamentally trusted.
If Jackie hadn't gotten cancer, he probably would have reigned longterm. The acting boss thing was a formality; the old boss had a life sentence and was never coming back.
He was boss in all but name - he only called himself acting boss out of respect for Old Man DiMeo.

I agree with others about wanting to see more of Jackie Aprile, even if his time as boss or acting boss of the Family was uneventful precisely because of how cool and levelheaded he was.
That said, I'd love to see another prequel movie or prequel series showing him and Tony as young kids robbing that card game and rising up through the ranks of the Jersey Family.
I also would love to see Jackie and his brother Richie Aprile on screen together and see what their sibling dynamic was like.

The scenes with Jackie Jr and his friend just listening to stories eating spagetti with coke or just deciding to watch a movie whilst eating pizza instead doing something dangerous that night are so heartbreaking. The scenes were set up like that to represent an untainted youth, they were not raised to be mobsters like their fathers before, they were raised to have a normal childhood and young adulthood.
It's what they were meant to be doing instead of getting involved with the wrong people. It's what Tony and Jackie Sr. wanted for his son. They were kids, they should've been enjoying that, instead they were brutally murdered for extremely reckless decisions.
