As for Harry's line in the film about the .44 Magnum being "the most powerful handgun in the world", one should note that even in the 1970s, the .44 Remington Magnum cartridge had been eclipsed in size and power by the .454 Casull round, however, the first widely available commercially sold revolver chambered for the 454 Casull would not come for another ten years, so his statement for the time frame is accurate.

THE BOTTOM LINE IS BOTH THE ACTOR AND THE WEAPON MADE EACH OTHER FAMOUS AND .44 MAG IS MY ONLY CALIBER.

Dirty Larry used a .41 Magnum. He was a little behind the times.

I own both the 4" and 6.5" barrel length versions of the Model 29-10, both were NIB.

I had heard yrs. ago that the 44 was as redily avilable and in the 1st film he ctually used a 41 mag. ?? AND it was a 8-3/8 not a 6 bbl length. in 29-2 pinned barrel. I've owned every bbl length at one time or another from the 2Horton mdl 3" all the way to 10-5/8 sil M-29. The fav are the 29-2 8-3/8" & the 3" Horton 29-3 both beautiful blued pieces.

There's been a long time story floating that the ACTUAL gun firing was a Model 25 S&W, in caliber .45 Colt, in order to use the readily available 5-in-1 blanks, a staple in Hollywood for decades. The sole difference between the Model 25 and the Model 29 is caliber, since both are built on the N-frame. Only an extreme close-up of barrel, showing caliber, would alert audience. Story sounds practical, would like an educated response.

@pieword I bet you don't know how much you had when you purchased that sized 29. Those are the Holy Grails of 29's because they are so rare. But condition matters to.

I shoot my .44 Mag all the time one handed. Its not great for accuracy, but its certainly doable. Usually I do it when just goofing around since the recoil really is pretty strong with factory ammo or stiff handloads. But once you get used to it, its no big deal. Especially if you swap out the factory grips to something like Hogues.
    I have a 6" 629, an early P&R'd model. Shoots beautifully.

Fabulous. Well, if you ever write another cop movie and need realism, I'm available.
    I'll bring my own donuts.
Plus, if you need Smith 44's, I've got plenty.

I brought several S&W 44 magnums over several years. A blued 61/2", nickeled 8 3/8", blued 4", stainless 6". I used them for hunting, long range target and steel, 200 meter max, shooting.
They all performed great and took my largest buck with the 8 3/8". Still hunting at 78 years old and love my 44's.

From what I've read there was actually three (plus rubber prop gun) and the gun pictured above was used in Dirt harry had smooth grips, but in some of the other films, u can see they had checkered grips. Also Clint's was a 6 1/2" barrel not a 6"

Now Smith and Wesson has a .460 and .500 magnum which is a good for hunting or dangerous animals.

Milius loves to tell this bunk about this gun being Dirty Harry's gun in the film but that is a load of BS he likes to tell. The real story from Clint himself, from an old magazine interview, is they couldn't find any 4 inch or any size in that caliber and almost had to use a regular .357 that all cops had at the time, or another manufacturer entirely (Colt), so Clint contacted S&W and they got in touch with the guy that was in charge of developing the .44 for assembly. He had two made up by hand of spare parts: a 6.5 inch and an 8 3/8ths inch and both were used during filming.
After filming, Clint asked to keep one (the 6.5), and was allowed to do so. It is the only screen used Dirty Harry .44 magnum and has rock solid proof and provenance from Dirty Harry himself. Clint still has it. That one belongs in the Smithsonian, but one of his sons Kyle or Scott will probably get it. The other gun went back to S&W and hasn't been seen since. It probably doesn't exist cause it was probably disassembled and used for parts (the film wasn't as big at first as it soon became ), or it could be sitting somewhere in a storage room at S&W forgotten or was sold off unknowingly to someone. No one kept the serial number recorded, so it is probably lost for good. Clint still has the one he kept after the final day of filming.
This .44 in this clip was made special by S&W by request of Warner Brothers to give to John Milius after the Sequel was filmed. The guns used in all the sequels were altered to only fire blanks and were provided by a world famous Hollywood prop house that is no longer in business. The guns were sold off to various other prop houses many many years ago and since lost. Clint himself has the only real Dirty Harry gun now.
