    A very common welding test in the aerospace industry is a 1g square groove weld in .063" (1.6mm) thickness.
    Sometimes its a hire in test to get your foot in the door.
    Other times a 1g test is just part of a series of tests given to qualify a welder for a range of thicknesses, shapes, and positions.
    This video provides some basic tips for preparing the metal, fit and tack, and also welding techniques.
    Settings used ...
    Amps set to 85 on machine and actual amperage settled in at 72-73.
    Cleaning set to 30% , Ac frequency set to 100 hz using advanced square wave.
    A #5 clear cup was used along with 14cfh of argon
    3/32 (2.4mm) 2% lanthanated electrode with a blunt taper
    1/16 (1.6mm) 4043 filler rod

    I wish this video came out about a week ago because I took this exact test!
    Unfortunately the CWI who gave me my test ,cut my pieces with a bandsaw with the coolant on. No matter how much i clean and scrubbed my test pieces i got black soot and poor puddle characteristics. But I still passed!

    You mentioned the grainy look of the weld. I'm not new to tig welding but new to aluminum. During the summer my welds weren't grainy, now that is cold they have been. My welding is done in a shed that's not climate control. Why would my weld be grainy? I use 4043 filler. Thanks. Maybe a video that explains that. I learn a tremendous amount from you video's.

I don't t think I got a coupon that looked as good as yours though. The same fixture is also used for stainless and titanium with a back purge, which is also a common test. Thanks for posting.

    We are welding some thin aluminum ACM panels. Aluminum sheets laminated with fire resistant plastic material in between. Our goal is to fuse the sheets butt ended and only fuse one side. It becomes the inside and is not visible when installed on a building. Having trouble getting settings so as to no impact the visibe side of the panels when finished. Ever seen this done?

Can you make any videos on this issue?

    • @weldingtipsandtricks
      @weldingtipsandtricks  Před 7 lety +19

      laywire is possible but usually difficult aluminum. and usually not the best way becuase its very easy to get lack of fusion on a fillet weld...and also because its so easy to lose contact with the puddle and then it balls up and you get lumps.

Could you tell me if an Eastwood TIG 200 is an appropriate machine for thin .040-.030 Aluminum. I’m having one hell of a time. Although, I’ve not been using “chill blocks”, just welding on a cheap thin portable table. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
