  • Reims Gueux Circuit 1953-1972 layout with Drone Footage of the Lost Part!
    The abandoned circuit of Reims-Gueux was home of the French Formula 1 Grand Prix in the 50's and 60's. We ride (and fly) the last version of the circuit, which is much famous because of Formula 1.
    Original the Reims-Gueux circuit ran through the village of Gueux. In 1952 a new connection was built to short cut the passage through Gueux.
    A year later this new section was extended, which made Reims-Gueux one of the fastest circuits on the Formula 1 Calendar. After the 1953 Grand Prix they increased the radius of the Muizon Corner and the Thillois Corner, to make the circuit even faster.
    The length of this circuit version was 8.301 km (5.159 Miles). Because the Muizon Corner was demolished for the expansion of the N31, I filmed this part with my DJI Mavic Air Drone.
    Between the cornfields you can still see were the old track was, on the aerial footage. Also from the N31, which was the long back straight in this version, you can see some remains of both versions of the Muizon Corner.
    The circuit closed in june 1972 and the day after the last race they started the demolition of the pits. However, a new mayor came after the elections and he stopped the demolition.
    After many decades of abandonment there were new plans to demolish the buildings and built new houses on the site.
    The foundation "Les Amis du Circuit de Gueux" was founded to save the remains of the old Reims-Gueux circuit. At the end they get permission to restore the buildings and the guarantee that nothing would be demolished anymore.
    Every time when I visit the Reims-Gueux Circuit, I see improvement in the restauration. The foundation does a good job in preserving this piece of motorsport history!

    We were there yesterday. My fourth visit over 40 years. They really need an annual camping weekend and classic car gathering, with the start finish road closed to public traffic.

    What history. Mingling with the ghosts. Giancarlo Baghetti here in 1961 became the only driver ever to win a F1 Championship Grand prix on a first attempt.
    What were the bookies odds on that one ?
    Colin Chapman raced in his one and only Grand Prix here in1956.

      I describe that moment also in my blog about this visit. I alway try to keep much distnce as possible in front of me, when filming a circuit which is now public road. So I drove exactely the speed limit of 90 Km/h, just like the guy in front. But that sunday driver behind me tried to overtake me with 1 km difference. You can't see it in the video, but he was next to me for a long time. When the speed limit went up to 110 Km/h I hoped he would accelerate and go away. Instead of that he parked his car in front of me with 81 Km/h, and blocked my view on the track/road. That was the moment I decided to show him how to overtake properly ;)

    Hello, excuse an information, but was the circuit of Reims all on public roads or had some stretch been designed only for the race track because there are curves that seem made to post for the spectacularity of the races and then why interrupt that trait?

    • @Circuitsofthepast
      @Circuitsofthepast  Před 4 lety +2

      It was public road, but as you said, some sections were designed for racing. Here is some explanation about it: czcams.com/video/kKY2qiNv2K4/video.html Part has been demolished for the widening of a N31 highway.

      That's so sad. I have a special kind of hate for people who destroy living history. Surely someone in the area must have known about the circuit's existence? And after all the destruction at the hairpin, it wasn't even necessary for it to be erased to let the new road go through! Absolutely disgusting.
