I love that you compared Jesse Pinkman to both Arthur Morgan and John Marston from Red Dead Redemption. That's cool. And you could say that Dutch van der Linde was basically Red Dead's version of Walter White. I can totally see Dutch's right-hand man Hosea Matthews as Red Dead's version of Mike Ehrmantraut, and Micah Bell is basically either Red Dead's version of Todd or his Uncle Jack. Or both.

I love how they chose to make this a classic western story arc. Outlaw on the run, scrambling against other criminals to get to a secret treasure, ending it all with a showdown and the hero riding into the sunset. People say this movie didn’t really need to exist and it didn’t, but I’m really glad it does. Jesse was too good of a character to not get a proper send off.
Can’t wait for you to get into BCS, imo it’s way better written than Breaking Bad.

I laughed so hard at how the welder said "Your .22 against my .45." Like the difference in calibers makes a difference in a duel. At such close range too. Laughed even harder when Jesse used his concealed gun. Anyone with eyes and a brain could see he was desperate and dangerous. Anyone sober anyway, lol!

I think most of us hardcore B Bad fans were nervous when this cane out. The ending to the show was about as perfect as we could've hoped for, and just knowing Jesse got out, that was enough. We didn't need an epologue.
But credit due to the writers and creators, they made this work, and gave us the closure with his character we didn't even know we needed.

Kind of a weird thing to commend someone on, but it was really cool to see how well-rounded of a criminal Jesse became. Total goofball that could barely accomplish anything at the start of the series, but he absorbed the best qualities of Walt, Mike, and Gus in short order. He maintains his heart of gold, but is legitimately one of the last people to mess with in the show, on top of being THE best meth cook in the US after Walt’s death.
If he wanted, he could be a one man empire, but that’s the last thing he wants, and that’s why we love him. Some may say the movie was unnecessary, but he absolutely deserved a proper send-off; something more definitive than the end of BB.

I liked how it was left to the audience to imagine how Todd got fat in between the time they kidnapped Jesse and he escaped. Todd really started to enjoy himself with ice cream, even shared some with Jesse, and after he killed Andrea he was very happy with the ice cream situation in his life. But he noticed his figure and showed amazing dedication to get back in shape before the finale of Breaking Bad, probably hired a personal trainer with all that money he ended up killing after the job was done, keeping in line with the famous realism of the show. Bravo Vince!

The scene with Skinny Pete and Badger always got me, from Skinny Pete's perspective Jesse was always that friend who dipped in and out of his life, although this time it was different. This time Jesse was running away to Alaska and Skinny Pete had no idea this was the last time he would ever see Jesse again, they also never got told where Jesse was going so he could never go looking for him. Considering Jesse had a new identity to protect I think its safe to say he never returned to New Mexico or contacted old connections. He literally never saw Skinny Pete or Badger again. I don't know why it just gets me, maybe it's because from past experiences Skinny Pete is probably expecting Jesse to show up again like old times, but bro literally grew old never seeing his hero/friend again, never knowing if he made it or died trying. That's deep.

  • @SaintJessebelle

Absolute gem of a movie and the perfect epilogue of Breaking Bad, honestly. Also, the scene at the end with Walt and Jesse at the diner is supposed to take place right after they got back from being stranded in the desert while cooking that huge batch of meth. That's why Jesse was icing off in the bath and Walt was asking how long it would take to sell, but also why Jesse was being so considerate of Walt's cancer and his family getting the money, because he had just learned about the diagnosis and why Walt was doing it. Also I think it's so telling that the most perfect line to encapsulate why Walt did what he did in becoming Heisenberg was summed up in what he told to Jesse.
"You didn't have to wait your whole life to do something special."

@@theogrebert4610I think the reason it gets brought up in this scene specifically is because both Walt and Jesse have just been unambiguously reminded of their own mortality, having been stranded in the desert for days with no hope of survival. So Jesse reassures Walt that when the time really does come, he'll do right by him.

My wife and I were vacationing in Santa Fe and being the huge BB fans we are, we decided to spend a day in ABQ. We booked a private BB tour. The tour guide took us to see all the amazing sites from BB and BCS. The White residence, Jane and Jessie's apt complex, where Walt caused the explosion at Tuco's, the spot where Walt was picked up by Ed, the spot where Combo was shot and on and on. Chuck McGill's house is actually catty corner from Jesse's parent's place. We took tons of pics. Also took us to the candy shop that supplied the infamous "blue meth". Got pics of us doing a "cook". Anyway, so our tour guide mentions how lucky we are because they are filming the Breaking Bad movie in ABQ right now! The crew would put up these cryptic signs to stealthily guide cast and crew to various shooting locations. Our tour guide's brother got a job working on the set and told him how to read the signs. Anyway, after the "official tour" was done, he drove us around seeking out sets that were shooting. We got to check out a couple of locations and then there was a huge set across from the courthouse set up. Catering trucks and a huge canopy, cast and crew was there, it was their dinner break. We spotted Aaron Paul! Also, Twisters was painted up like Los Pollos Hermanos. Got some great shots in Twisters sitting where Walt sat, etc. Such a fantastic and memorable experience!

Robert Forster (vacuum cleaner guy) died shortly after this film. He was an amazing actor. He was very big in the 70s and then his career kinda went dormant and he disappeared and then in the 1990s he was cast as the role of Max Cherry in Tarantino's Jackie Brown and he was BRILLANT. It revitalized his career and I can't recommend that movie enough solely for his performance and character alone

The last scene with Walt and Jesse is just perfection to me and perfectly encapsulates their relationship. On some level, Walt does care about Jesse, but ultimately that gets overridden by his need to control others and Jesse. Also love how they continued on the theme of how Jesse interacts with insects to set him apart from others in the show. In the second season, he lets a bug crawl over him before Skinny Pete comes over and stomps on it and they showed something similar while Jesse was outside the welding company. My headcanon for fat Todd is that we are seeing things from Jesse's perspective, so maybe to a tortured and broken Jesse he would see his psychopathic captor as being large and intimidating. The reason he doesn't fight back is because he feels small and weak compared to Todd, whom he is terrified of.

Breaking Bad is the single most inspirational thing I've ever seen as a writer, particularly when I learned how many things changed from the first draft to what we got. Jesse was originally going to be the guy Tuco beat to death at the end of season 1, but when they saw the chemistry between Paul and Cranston, they completely redid the story going forward. Mike's character only exists because Bob Odenkirk couldn't make it to set for the season 2 finale. And Gus didn't exist, his character's name in the original script was "Chicken store manager". I cannot image the version of this show that doesn't have those 3 characters.

I love that in the final confrontation, Jesse approaches it like you would imagine Walt to do (like he Tuco in Season 1) but you could say his method of staying alive and going that full measure comes from an old school black and white film with a gun (Mike had an affinity for both).
The Skinny Pete moment is amazing as we've seen Walt reunite with his old life and everyone hates him. Jesse emerges and while he doesn't have much, he has genuine love for him from his friends.

Loved this video dude. Happy to see this movie get more appreciation. A lot of people (mainly those who saw BB back in the day) consider this movie unnecessary. And while I can understand why, I'll take good writing, directing, acting, editing, cinematography and music, whether it's completely necessary or not.
Plus, I do believe that, if anything else, the ending of this film is what most justifies it being made. Throughout Breaking Bad Jesse relied on the approval of others. He needed to be told "good job" by somebody. But in El Camino he's alone and he has to save himself. So when he's driving to Alaska at the end, I like to think he's telling himself "good job."
And of course there's the difference in Jesse's driving. In the finale of Breaking Bad he crashed through the gate. Speeding into the dark. Maniacally laughing with tears in his eyes. Letting out that scream of an uncaged, liberated animal. He was free but at the same time everything was still so hardcore, loud and painful. The final shot of El Camino is where he's actually reached a moment a peace. It's daylight. The snowy vistas are sobering. The sound drowns out. Jesse's calm and laid back against the seat. Subtly confident about his future. That's freedom.

Shoutouts to Aaron Paul. Jesse was supposed to be beat to death by Tuco in season 1. But his acting was so good, they kept him around. Best decision ever. And now he carries an entire movie. A surprise movie that we sort of needed, (since Jesse's story ended on an open note) but didn't expect. El Camino really brings out the Neo-Western in Breaking Bad. This was a modern western, and it worked so well.
Jesse earned his happy ending. What a character development, compared to season 1 Jesse. A hardened badass, who has gone through literal hell. He did a lot wrong, but his actions also had consequences, and he suffered through all that. I see Jesse has learned from all his mentor figures. He has the quick wit of Walt, the intense negotiation skills of Gus, and the badassness of Mike. All skills that helped him out when trying to leave this life behind.
Love how Badger and Skinny Pete are true friends. No gaslighting and manipulation. They just look out for their bro.
Also, there is a deleted scene, where Jesse arrives at the vacuum store in the morning, and Ed the disappearer takes his gun away, saying that where he goes, he doesn't need it anymore.
Can't wait for BCS. We will have so much to discuss and analyze.

Just a little tid bit about the geography of the cleaning ladies burial location. The burial site is about a two hour drive from Todd's apartment so Jessie was in the bed of that El Camino for about two hours with the corpse. It in North West New Mexico near Farmington. It is very desolate and eerie. It reminds me of what I would imagine the surface of Mars or some other planet. There is no cell phone reception and I believe that there are deposits of uranium at or near there.
Just another thing I forgot about. The place that Walt and Jessie were eating at is called the Owl Cafe which has a New Mexico history of its own. I had not been there for about 30 years roughly. My wife had business in Albuquerque last week, and we ate at the Owl. She had never been there. I also bought some weed at a dispensary that is at Saul Goodmans office.

James its been dope watching you react and be moved by the entire BB series plus el camino I remember showing my dad this show and watching it again with him probably 7 or 8 years ago and it was just great to share this master piece with him. Better Call Saul is fucking literally just as incredible with just less action but everything else is still impeccable and some aspects BETTER. The story of Mike and Nacho Varga/Salamancas is going to be epic. Pz and love.

For a quick diversion, there is an episode of Black Mirror where M*th Damon does a great Captain Kirk impression. Definitely interesting and amusing as hell to see a little range from him outside of Todd.
    It's season 4, episode 1, Uss Callister.

Been anxiously awaiting this reaction. We're closer and closer to Better Call saul. Which I think wraps up this entire storyline through 62 episodes of Breaking bad, El Camino the film, and 63 episodes of Better Call saul, it puts a beautiful bow on this brilliantly crafted universe. It's been a pleasure James, and will continue to be. Thank you for the awesome content. Can't wait for the awesome finale to it all. Episode 63 of BCS is just, chefs kiss perfect. Literally.

I’ve said this on multiple videos now, but it bears repeating.
Give BCS time to grab you. It’s a slow burn. The slow stuff is all super important, and once the show takes off, it’s a roller coaster that’s going to challenge Breaking Bad hard in terms of which you think is the better show.

James, you are one of the most articulate guys doing reviews! I have been producing documentaries for years and in that time exposed to many "wannabe's" - but I think your grip on this business is a good one. Wishing you much success and luck (it's at least one third luck for anyone). Would have loved having you on my team. Creativity and a feel for doing everything with nothing is the key. God Bless.
