- Finally time to refine, enhance and preserve the patina. Using hand brushes and an airbrush, I do some paint effects before using boiled linseed oil to bring out the colors and preserve the original patina. I also compare the rubbed oil finish to a sprayed clear coat finish.

The oiling works and looks nice, does not matter what others do, if it works for your shop or builds. Non painters and even some professional automotive painters forget, that Paint is a complex multi layered system designed to protect the surface from rust, weather, and minor damage. Oil is only needs 1 layer to do that and is self-healing somewhat. To get the metal both properly protected, we need good adhesion to a clean etched surface. Then a sealer primer or builder primer, then our top coat for the color, then the multiple layers of clear coat. Interupted by lots of sanding, wet sanding, and buffing. It is a lot of work. I prefer it in some cases, but not Rat Rods. But we cannot and I agree should not take the 3rd part of a 3 part system and just spray it over unprimed, uncleaned, and/or unprepared metal or surfaces and think that will work for long. Even all my former WyoTech Instructors said this: "The clear cannot and will not adhere well, if at all everywhere. This will cause it to fail, chip, peal, or otherwise not protect anything." Now a days they are marketing so-called bare metal clear coat paints, maybe those have adhesion promoters built in? They are not cheap either way. Oil is. Bottomline for my shop and my own thought process, professsion and personal painting/refinishing experience, says without the right surface and surface preperation, no primer, color-coat paint, clear coat, or single layer (enamal or paint and primer in one) are gonna last or stick well. To each their own, but oil is designed to penitrate bare metal and rusted surfaces and does. Paint is not designed, no matter what the label or marketing says, to do that. One primary reason, is if there us surface rust, old paint patina, cracked paint, or dirt, then our primers and top coats will never be in physcal contact with the actual metal surface below everything else. That us why rust sealing undercoats and chassis paints fail over time. Each layer is only as secure to the metal or surfaces as the the bottom most layer. Rust has no adhesion, it flakes off or forms dust on top of the real metal. Just some things to think about? Div (Diff) I think you said what works for you, is still what matters more. A+
I think this is one of the best comments I have EVER read on CZcams! I'm no paint expert, but what you said just makes sense! I hope everyone reads your comment. I'm going to pin it to the top. Thanks dude!!
@@ratrodsafrica Thanks, hope it helps...
Div, you are a beast, absolutely a beauty of a rig 👍🇺🇸⚜️🔥🔥🔥🔥
Thank you brother!
It's perfect! Now let's go for a drive !
Thanks! We all drove it down to town the other day. Didn't you come with?😂
Its a beautiful thing, that thing you do! Clear will yellow eventually if it even sticks. This is clearly superior for some . Thanks for another great video.
Yes, clear never lasts...

Now the Rat really looks great ! I'm glad the chunk of cheese at the back has gone a bit mouldy ! 👍👍😜
😁Nicely put!
Div, sounds like Duff the famous beer ! To think this truck was built from parts that were scattered and otherwise useless. You did something creative and useful and the result is fantastic!
Dont know the beer, but thanks for the kind words!

Nice work! A unique ride for a unique guy!
Thank you!
You do you and those that cannot handle it can keep watching and learning different ways to do things.
I am doing something similar to a 1948 jeep.
Let the haters keep on hating.
You said it man!
I've always liked the smell of boiled linseed oil, I use it on wooden projects, especially on black walnut.
100 percent better, very cool old girl ... Build On
Love watching your work wife says have a lack of one
Thanks! Tell the wife what I actually say is: Have a lekka one. Lekka is a South African slang word for nice or great or good 😁

Thanks, glad you are inspired!
I love this truck!
Good Job looking good 👍
Thank you
👍🏻That turned out Awesome!!!
Thanks!
WoW. What a diference. Looks amazing. Your the 1st person I've seen using this oil technique. Liked how u showed 2 different painting styles. Both look amazing but the brush painted one was my favourite. Us left handers are meant to be the most creative. 1st time I've ever heard your phrase. Only left handers are in their right minds. 😂🤣
Thanks! Now you know the most important thing about left handers😂
A piece of art!
Thank you!

Looks great.
Not bad, not bad at all. She’s now what you call “a goin to town rig”.
Ready to paint the town red 😆
Looking good
Great idea. I like the airbrush. Watch that bombshell stuff. People might think your weird or something.
Portland’s motto is Keep Portland weird. I do my part.
Thanks. I dont care if people think I'm weird! To some I probably am, but its their problem, not mine😂
Hi oom diff. I love the oil patina. I do the same on my old land cruiser. One a month and it shines like a star. Nice
Now that slick 😅
Hey Div. Love die build. Shine juice lyk baie goed. Love die build. Detaul verf werk lyk awesome
Dankie boet!
Awesome truck 👍
Awesome outlook 👍
Thanks! 👍
👍It's Good to be DIFFerent
✌
😂Thanks
Beautiful work Div!
Thank you! 😊
To me, the oil is more in line with the natural beauty of the weathered paint and steel. It needs some maintenance, but it glows and is PART of the paint and finish now, not riding on top of it “like it’s wrapped in plastic”.
Thanks for sharing your concoction, Div!
Yes, we'll spoken. I hate the shiny clear coats that many use. It does indeed look like a coat of plastic and destroy the patina in the long run
I think you did a great job on this project. With the price of gas I'm diggin the 4 banger too! Cheers from Canada!
Thank you! Yes, she's gonna work as a parts hauler, so the fuel economy will be great
Cool truck
Thanks brother
Great job Div
Thanks
Cool looking truck, man!
You are going to have a tough time deciding on the next project that can top this one.
Thanks for sharing your rat rod adventures.
Thanks! Let's see what happens next 😄

Thank you brother!
WOW...Thant looks great Div. That linseed oil is tops, I also use it on my quarry tile floors and my meranti windows. I don't like the shinny vanish look. Thank you again for sharing.
Great job!!!! That tied it all together. She’s looking sweeeet!
And that 4banger is sounding so much better with that muffler.
👍🏻👍🏻!!!!
Thank you! Yes, the muffler made a big difference. For the better😄
Good job I like your stuff

Thank you!
Hello Diff! I'm from the state of Indiana, where the world famous Indy 500 is, in the USA. I wanted to let you know I really do love your channel brother!
Thanks my man! Appreciate the comment
Lookin'Good... Brother
Thanks David!
Nice job Div.
Thank you!
Hey Div. Good video. I've seen a lot of guys doing their own patina, but I think your way is the best. Thanks for sharing.🍁👍👍
I appreciate that, thanks!
@ritaaboh Het Div. That's good news. I like to be a winner.🍁👍👍
Perfection..
You've nailed it Div. That truck is looking bloody awesome! Reading the comments it looks like you're inspiring a whole lot more Rat builders. Rat Rods Rule:)
Thanks !👍 If my stuff inspires, its mission accomplished! That's the main reason why I'm doing this.😀
You are way more than a "Triple Threat" to the winners circle when it comes to style, fabricator, designer, painter and my favorite; Left Handed". As my maternal grandfather and myself, both lefties.
And you are right; Shiny Paint Causes Stress!
At age 7 I would spend with my grandpa oiling his steel tool with linseed oil & turpentine. Later, I found that turpentine is distilled from live pine trees. Amazing product that has not gone up in price as much as everything else. Why is shipping so high to South Africa, Australia?
Enjoying the look with the spot weld tacks, hinge straps and my favorite is the wire welded stitches because it adds a "Frankenstein" look. Plus on gravel roads with the bush growing, scratches wipe right off. Pure Magic.😊
Take care Duff as in Nebraska we are having daytime high temps of 20 degrees F (-6 C) and it's cramping me style!
Best of luck, happy holidays and wishing you a great 2023.
DK, Omaha.
Wow DK, I will die in that weather!😄 Grandpa taught you good man. Thanks brother, happy holidays for you guys too
@@ratrodsafrica Thanks! I miss my grandpa a lot with a 1932 electrical engineering degree and army corp of engineers, he ran field generators that produced 4 different voltages to operate mobile Radar in England during WW-II. He was alway doing something in the garage but taught me how to solder as he build little toys from wire frames, washer for wheels and coffee can metal tops. Next thing you know, you had a Model "A" or rail engine for steam. Little pickups was his favorite. Wrap in news paper, place in box, drive the children's hospital and drop off a front desk with the nurses, then leave! Still have 3!
Blessing Rat Rodder in Africa! Love the air brush action and ties it together...Just great!
Looks good Div!
Thank you 😋
It looks good awesome job Div
Thank you! Cheers!
@@ratrodsafrica You're welcome 😁
The old girl is now dressed for the dance! Great job buddy!!
Thanks. Let's rock and roll! 😁
Was just on your channel looking to see if I had missed your latest video... Getting used to you being a part of my world Bro ...
I hope thats not a bad thing...😆 I try to post videos on Wednesdays and Sundays👍
@@ratrodsafrica It's a great thing Div 😎 I am around your age, but trapped in a body that no longer works well. I started as a Mechanics Assistant when I was 15 y/o, the grease and oil had already bonded with my DNA. I also spent a few years as a Metal Fabricator, so I have a lot of admiration and respect for the custom work you do. I am close to retirement, and may start doing a bit of traveling, as my body allows... I never considered SA a place to check out, but you have certainly opened my eyes... so has your attitude... thanks for that Bro
Gracias Hermano.
I dig it Div,, it's looking like it was born with all of its parts, nice work
Thank you my brother
So glad to see you fix the spare wheel hub! Looks way better now 👍
Years ago, the military boys used a mixture of kerosene and SAE 30 motor oil to shine up their equipment for parades. It worked well on the olive drab paint jobs.
The difference is that the boiled linseed oil dries. The motor oil stays oily and attracts dust.
@@ratrodsafrica That was a trick for parades. The vehicles were washed and back on duty afterwards.
You are a genius, Dev! Your Parian paint job looks original to me! I enjoyed spending time with you too!
Thank you! Cheers!
This bakkie build has changed my opinion of rat rods completely. It's so cool I think that my next car project will need to be on these lines rather than an anal retentive resto like before. Cant wait to see what you do next.
YES MAN! It will be the most fun you ever had, I promise! I'll be happy to help in any way I can.
Div has one over another one !!!!!!!!!!
I’m sure there are things you’re not happy with (as you said), but the fact is…it’s a masterpiece. I love this truck. And am grateful as always that you’ve shared the build with us. 😊👍👍
Thank you brother!
the sauce is the boss
Very nice
Thanks!
You really made all the turquoise touchups look amazing and it also tamed down the round tire bump out thingy at the back! Overall I would call the truck a thing of beauty! 👍😎
Thanks man!
I'm with you Div - Linseed oil wipe for me and you can re do as easy as pie.
And it looks grand.
And stops the rusting and application is done in way less time than it takes to polish a paint job.
And as you say and demonstrated, a scratch or two touches up with an oily rag again.
Yes Sir!😁
Clear coat is great, but you have to keep it polished anyway which is more costly than your patina sauce, most people can't afford to wash their car, or to lasy, great job,all the best, have a Lekka one
Love & Respect Diff lekka one
Jy is ń rat rod genius, ek het nie meer worde nie. Dis ongelooflik ń masterpiece, one of it's kind 💯%🙏 Lekka one Love & Respect
Thanks brother
'Floods' brand Penetrol is the best and easy to use patina preserver l have found..
