My new hero “ I don’t need no government telling me what I need to be safe” nice work on glass always wondered how that would work out gluing the glass in on older vehicles. Thanks for sharing
My depression era parents instilled this into all of their children:
"Use it up; wear it out!
Make it DO, or do WITHOUT."
I like what you've done. I've used stainless steel bowls for firewall indentations on some of my airplanes, and truck cowl modifications.
Thanks. It's a good motto, we've become consumers...
What I love about your channel is you are a lot closer to "real" people working on our stuff. Can't fix things with money if you don't have any!
Thanks brother. Yes man, my whole mission is to keep stuff real! I dont have time for all the fake and flash "shows"😅
Yessss !
What I also like. A Rat Rod is a Hot Rod built with what ever parts you can scrounge to make it work. Now days . Rat Rods are Halloween cars. Built to look like an un usable cartoon . Pure garbage
10:05 WHAT did you just say?
Love this channel. Bloke doing it his way. No Bullsh!t, 100% up front, honest & authentic. Not an ounce of fake theatre, just a real person doing it their way. A ton of smart wise thinking, brilliant Make-Do Technology mixed in.
Think its clever & useful art.
Your canvas & its pretty cool to let the painter paint & produce something out of discard tin.
Keep on Keeping On - "Baie cool" (Yes I had to look that translation up hahaha)
Thanks brother! Yeah man, my beard is too grey for all that fakery nonsense 🙂
I appreciate your honesty , but NO apologies needed . You do fine work , it looks great . I laughed at the toilet paper on the work bench . God Bless and stay well !
I know what you mean about brownie points with the wife! I am the head of my house! And she is the neck that turns the head! LOL! Spiling! Div, you just taught this guy something again! Your buddy did a great job of cutting the glass! The glass trim turned out fine.
What I like is your word "forest engineering" and it works for your car building project ... fantastic 👍
This glass install is exactly what I needed to see . Thank you and excellent work .
You're very welcome! I'll be happy if it can help you!
Hey Diff, thanks for passing on your knowledge. In return I will also pass on some knowledge, when using sealant, silicone etc instead of smoothing it with your finger (with or without mineral turps, washing liquid etc) you can use a potato. The sealant will not stick to the potato due to an enzyme in the potato (learnt from doing countless tile joints in bathrooms). You can also profile your potato if you need a particular curve. So another little tool you could use in the future. Enjoying your channel, cheers.
That's a real clever trick Michael! Thanks dude, will definitely give it a go
who figured out to use a potato?? Who knew????
Mind = blown
🤯
@@brentchalmers1436 someone doing seals in a kitchen with all his fingers already caked with this disgusting stuff, not an inch of rag left, and a forgotten potato lying on the counter 😉
Cut a V in the plastic tip of your urethane applicator to get the recommended profile.
Also put your glue and rubber trim in the sun for awhile it will be more flexible an glue will move more easily.
I've done thousands of windshields and your approach is solid.
Great work.
Thank you! So one learns!
In my late teens worked for a glass shop that had a shaper nozzle that did a box shaped bead with a half round on top. That flattened out making a nice straight line under the glass.
Can’t find anything like it on the all knowing all seeing internet.
But in that same shop had a notcher tool to cut tips in a few profiles. And some old guys who were artists in cutting nozzles.
I'm a Southern American!
I Understand You Perfectly!
Screw the Frenchie's!!
Nice work. It is good to see someone actually making a hotrod/custom car, not saying they made it and just project managing it sending pieces off to different shops to get work done.
Thanks brother!
I've learned to embrace certain imperfections in some of my projects... I truly enjoy them now.
The Japanese have a word for it: Wabi-sabi. The acceptance of transience and imperfection!
Dude, I have learned more from you watching your videos than any other source on CZcams on top chopping and how to properly mark and cut...👍👍👍👍
Glad to help!
The part where you're installing the adhesive with the music... I totally got stressed from the suspense! 🤣🤣
😂 A bit of fun while editing! Maybe an anticlimax cause nothing happened...😅
53 years working as a panelbeater spraypainter, there seems to be to many arm chair engineers in the comments.keep using urethane mate not silicone, dont v the nozzle just do it your way.Keep up your good work mate. All the very best to you and your wife from australia.
Thanks mate! Yes, lots of keyboard builders out there 😁
Greetings from Saskatchewan Canada. I'm sitting here learning things to help me when I start working on my rat rod. I should be outside doing stuff because it's warmed up a lot to -14 C but here I am inside, hooked on your videos. Thanks for taking the time to film your adventures for us.
Nice real world jobery. Bye the way, to get that "V" shape in the sticky stuff you have to cut the V into the nozzle. Quite easy actually and it makes for a lot tidyer bead.
To reduce the mess from squeeze out, place masking tape where you don't want the adhesive! Then peel it off while it's wet. That's what I do whenever I caulk adhesives to seal anything. It almost always comes out with a nice clean and straight line.🙂
Hi Rat Rods, Glass guy here, art Glass.... I have found you can use masking tape to keep the black windshield stuff from getting where you don't want it. Use a marking pen first to define your tape line then go over to your work bench to tape it off. Once the glass is seated and you have spread the black goo out, hold the window in place with one hand and pull the tape off... really clean edge. Keeps the mess & clean up down to nothing. Love your truck, enjoy the ride, it's the only one we've got.
Thanks David!
Nicely done your English is better than my Africans 👍👍👍👍
Old -School...RULES 🇿🇦
I’ve seen gluing in the glass like that before but not with the t rubber trim, love it gives it a finished look
The t trim is an new one for me too. Love it!
Great video and great advice as far as NOT telling them it’s for a vehicle windshield!
Thanks!
You have a new CANADIAN viewer some great ideas from a true craftsman ,
Hello art from Canada! Welcome to my shop brother!
To get a triangle bead you need to cut the nozzle on a bias then crease the side that is furthest back. Place the wide side down on the frame and move very steady.
I wish I had known this in my first car - a 1943 Plymouth Pickup, which I bought for 75$ in 1966. The way it was, I drove it in many Oregon rainstorms! It thusly gave me a splash when starting out from stops!
😂
i loved the 'my wife is the belt that holds my pants up' comment...the same applies in our house ..my husband says i do what i want as long as my wife says it is ok..lol..can't wait for the proper test drive, i'm sure you are surrounded by a beautiful view...one of my old friends is from south africa and he always says how pretty it out there
Sounds like your hubby understands how things work!😅I'm blessed to live in a beautiful part of SA
Excellent make do method. The "T" rubber molding works beautifully. 👍 😃
As a retired w/s installer. You should start on the bottom first when pushing the vinyl trim in.
But for a beginner you did ok. 😁
👍 "Don't Cry !"🤣Rubber looks great, I glued my windshield in my 53 Chevy 210 chopped top -than cut in half and glued the typical rubber seal molding over ✌ Bush mechanic Minnesota USA ENJOY
Cool man! Good bush mechanics think alike!
@@ratrodsafrica Great Video as always, Thanks for effort Diff
Windows look really good! Suspenseful music during install was perfect!
Thanks! Was having a bit of fun there with the music during editing😅
It’s amazing to me that you can build that in South Africa. As you said in the beginning yes there’s more than just animals haha
You will not believe what gets built here! World class street rods, restomods etc, many exported to Australia
If you need to bend the rubber, heat help. Taking near like curved section from some other window seal might be handy
Great raw footage and explanation. Always good to see old school engineering. It is a dying art form.
Tip I saw the other day was to use tape to mask the side window glass. Then after smoothing the sealant, and before it cures, just peel back the tape to leave a clean edge.
The glass installation went great! I really like the rubber seal idea
Thanks! 👍
If you don't mess up sometimes, you aren't doing anything. That's how you learn to do things.
Exactly my friend 🙂
When you put the vent windows in the doors, I thought of the 51s, that was the first year for vent windows..I watch Half Ass Customs..his work is a lot like yours. which is the best kind, he has a system that he raises and lowers his door glasses..why don't you ask him how he does that.. He like you, is very personable, just a good all around craftsman.. I enjoy your work..I'm 84 now and still am a minister for the Churches of Christ who imitate original, historic first century Christianity. I'm just a simple minister of the Gospel.. Paul from Ohio..
Hey Paul. 84 and going strong! Well done! Thanks, I have a method for raising door glass that I used on another build. Might do it again down the line...
The rubber fits the windscreen very nice!
thumbs up
Great video. That rubber trim was a good idea!
If the tip of your windshield adhesive tube is cut in a inverted V it will make the adhesive come out in the upside down V instead of the round bead but it depends on the application sometimes you may need the wider bead looks like it worked fine for you so good job...
so glad to see your subscribers are picking up. now 5000 in 8 hrs. way better then a yr ago. lol
Thanks Jay! Ja, slowly growing...
I've been married 39 years myself Diff... it's all about the brownie points!
Ah, so you know how these things work!😀
I remember those old Chevies, they had vacuum motor wipers that quit working when you tried to pass someone, or went up a long hill. Those old recirculating heaters weren't phased out in pickups until 57 or 58 don't recall for sure. I think sedans had fresh air heaters in 57, could have been 56 but I know for sure they had them in 57.
Gidday Diff.
I'm enjoying your videos and you showing your process.
I thought I'd shear a few tips in regards to the sika flex.
I used to work in the railways and replacing busted windows was a regular thing, we would always chuck the tubes of urethane into a bucket of hot water before we started to remove the old window, by the time we were ready it'd be warmed through and a lot easer to squeeze out of the tubes.
Also to get that triangle bead, cut your nozzle off at the diameter you want and then cut a V notch into it, have the V notch face up as you go around and you'll get that triangle of sealant.
Now as you say you can't get the primers etc and you probably noticed how easily the sika came off the glass when you trimmed it up because it wasn't etched with a "Fret" you could try keying the glue surface with some wet n dry sandpaper to give the urethane something to grab onto.
That's my experience good luck and keep em coming.
Thanks for the tips!
Diff does it again. You always make a plan come together. Windows make a big difference on the rat rod. Thanks for the lekka time and entertainment you share.
Well all right! You've done it again. Pretty damn good my friend. Looking forward to seeing it on the road and hearing that muffler. Good luck Dif.
Thanks Richard! We will be on the road soon!
Great job on the windshield
It is always a joy for me to be able to watch your videos. Thanks bro!
That makes me feel good! Thank you.
I think i now have a plan/idea how I want to install glass on my project!! Thank You!!
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent workmanship
The T rubber was a nice touch!
Thank you Anthony! I surprised myself😅
I'm so glad you covered this. I will be putting my glass in soon, and have planned to use the 3M version of windshield adhesive. You given me some helpful hints for sure. Hats off to you sir!
Man, I will be happy if my video can help you!
Buy an air powered caulking gun... They are not much and You will not regret it
Glass looks good.
I find pushing caulking you get more control of the bead. Great content. Thanks!
I love it, south Africa, awsome
Beautiful job working with what you have! Very creative! Thanks for sharing.
We all tend to get a little creative when necessary. The fun is solving the problem!
Thanks Ray. Glad you enjoyed it!
🔥🔥🔥👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Straps with the clip release . You could use them to hold your window 🪟 up for your doors . That way it'll go up or down 🔥🔥👍🏻👍🏻

Hey Div. Good video. I've been watching a lot of your videos over the last couple of weeks. You work well by yourself. The windows turned out Great. I like a gearhead that will show his stuff-ups. We are not perfect. Thanks for sharing.🍁👍👍

You really deserve a toms up mate!👍
Thanks! 😃
Man, It turned out really good!
I use small copper tube for my application tip which is bent on one end into a triangle of my choosing. Just unscrew the plastic tip from the cartridge of urethane and flare one end of the copper tube so that it won't push out the tip, insert it into the plastic tip and screw it back on the cartridge. You can make your caulk form in any shape you wish with this trick.
If one is really talented one can simply heat and reform the plastic tip as well. Greetings from Northern Ontario Canada.
Obviously Ed of the North is a man that uses his brains! That is clever my man! Great idea.
Respect, you are a tough ol bugger doing that sika with a manual caulking gun 🔫!!! That stuff is thick . A few years ago my local windshield replace shop pissed me off ,so I decided to do my own windshields. I bought a usef pneumatic glass remover for $125 and an air caulking gun for the glue ...$23 , money well spent .. !! I've done three windshields so far on my own cars .
Desperation is a great driver!😅 That gun was horrible, new one is on the shopping list!
Hi, Douff greetings from Puerto Rico here on the Caribbean, like very much your videos
Thank you. I spent some time in Puerto Rico many years ago!
From Texas, I enjoyed your glass install.
Thank you Ronnie from Texas!
I had an old front wheel drive with a bad cv boot . I cleaned the out side of the boot with acetone ,and removed the boot clamps from the boot . I then cut a tee shirt in to strips . I covered them with polyurethane adhesive . Holding the shaft straight I wrapped the strips around the boot , keeping the edges of the boot together . I over lapped the edges of the tee shirt and wound them so they would not unwind .After the adhesive cured I reclamped the boot , I drove that car for 7 more years with no problem with shaft or boot
Wow, never heard that before! Out the box thinking!
To get the triangular bead the data sheet asks for, cut a v in the end (side) of the noozle, face that V notch away from direction of travel & you will get your V shaped bead. Great Job, an interesting Vid.
Thanks. Yes, I'm learning that it's all about holding the gun correctly!🙂
I think you did an amazing job! Love the Rat Rod!
Thank you!
You are a great engineer keep those great videos coming kind regards to you
Thanks, will do!
Good job Diff
Great job fitting those windows. Love the idea of using the T-section rubber in conjunction with the sikaflex! I am going to use that! Have a great weekend there Diff.
Thanks. Yes, the T-section thing seems to be working well. First time I try it.
Sikaflex is a lot runnier than window adhesive and would not stay in the joint
@@claybair4904 the stuff I used IS a window adhesive made by Sika. Called Sikatack Go. They have a wide range of products.
That worked amazingly well!!! looks good.
Great video Diff I am a newbie to your channel and love your enthusiasm making parts from scratch without the hight tech garage equipment keep up the good work
Thank you William! Welcome to my shop brother!
I really love your easy laid back style
@@billywhizz98 thanks brother. No fake and flash here...😅
In a previous life, back in the early 90s, I built armored cars. Usually we wanted them to appear stock from the outside. We had custom widescreens made that were several layers thick, around 25mm. And I would use almost the exact techniques, bonding the thick, heavy windscreen into a custom deep shelf with the urethane and then using the urethane to bond the trim on around the perimeter. That T molding would have been a time saver. I used to joke that cutoff wheels and the urethane should both come in flavors, since they both ended up all over my lunch. Looking great, as always.
So it sounds like even the pros get that sticky stuff everywhere! 😅
Nice job my friend,
Cool Beans.
Looks good money and supplies aren't always easy to come by and fancy things aren't always affordable do do with what we got and mistakes happen to all of us
Top stuff dude.... Little tip for you. When using sealer... Dip your finger in washing up liquid an a touch of water. It smooths and slides over sealer an doesn't stick to your fingers. I put washing up liquid anywhere I don't want it and it won't stick to it for toffee.... Keep up the good work... Ratlooklloyd
Thanks for the tip! Now I just gotta steal some from the wife...
@@ratrodsafrica let's just hope she doesn't read the comments 😬🙈😅
Thanks Straight Ahead ✌😎
That’s exactly how I would do it ⚡️
Great job, most new cars have windows glued in place and the glass is trimmed in black to hide it. I installed the rear window of my 3 window coupe the same way you did your rear window. I used a household black silicone caulk, cleans off your hands easier, and smooths out really well. Its been about twenty years ago, still tight.
Wow, so the normal old silicone has been lasting that long! Yes, way easier to work with😅
@@ratrodsafrica
But, it won't retain the glass, in collision situations, and actual Urethane ADDS to the vehicles Structural Integrity because of the Permanent Bond it creates, when properly applied.
Previously said through about 1978 we used Butyl tape. I'm sure you've seen the black sticky also used for the backside of door panels, holding the plastic barrier up.
When older cars would wreck, the front and back glass would literally leave the vehicle, in 1 piece.
Great channel you start with what you have and keep it simple

hey Diff, try cutting a v notch back into your applicator so it makes an open triangle when you sit it on the job instead of a simple slash cut, I hope that helps
