That Hornets team was horrifically bad, and it wasn't because of him. He actually had some flashes of great play during the season (12 20+ point games and a 30 point game), which wasn't terrible for a rookie, especially in that era of slower paced/lower scoring ball. But his career was effectively ended by that knee injury before his second season, and you have to wonder if his diabetes made it impossible to fully recover from it.

Part of the issue might have been adjusting to the pace/rigor of an NBA season as a diabetic. He couldn't really afford to lose any athleticism and it also likely recked his confidence. Kobe seemed to like the guy and while he might've just been trying to be nice it sounded like Ammo played better at practice.

Happens all of the time with the media. They do the same thing with free agents. I remember the media criticized Elway for not out-bidding Brock Osweiler’s $17.5M offer from the Texans. Now it’s considered one of the worst free agent deals ever and I saw some media criticizing Elway years later for having offered Osweiler $17M a year. It’s always hindsight 20-20 for the media but nonstop criticism for executives and players that made the best decision with the knowledge they had at the time.

@@frankie3791 I just looked up Kwame Brown’s scouting report before being drafted and the media was comparing him to Karl Malone and Chris Webber. So first the media compares Brown to Hall of Fame caliber legends. Then He becomes a bust and the media criticizes MJ for ever thinking Brown would be successful, even though the media itself rated Brown very highly. If you look up Brown’s scouting reports you’ll find multiple articles that describe his scouting report as being one of the worst in NBA history. I’m not even an MJ fan but even I think it’s BS the media doesn’t get any criticism for overvaluing Brown while MJ gets endless criticism.

It’s a double standard.

I can imagine having to force a grown man to take a shower. I used to work with a dude who was super gross. Our management had to sit him down multiple times and talk to him about his hygiene- a grown man who more than once had to be told he needs to wear clean clothes and shower and wash his hair. Eventually I became a project manager and the first thing my boss did was to make our stinky employee my problem lol. I really never had a problem talking to any of our people about work related issues and I was pretty good at it and well liked and trusted by everyone who worked under me but talking to an adult about his BO and greasy hair and biological weapon level breath is super uncomfortable. This dude also missed work and had to be hospitalized one time for getting a norovirus that is most commonly the result of ingesting fecal matter. This is after we had told him many times to wash his hands after he used the bathroom. The guy was like 29 years old and I had to tell him basic rules of life like “here is my system that has never failed me- pants you can sometimes get a few wears out of as long as they don’t have stains or wrinkles but the big 3 you must change every single day are socks, underwear, undershirt… you gotta start with a clean pair everyday” This is shit most people learn as small children lol

But this video illuminates his immense prosperity in college and spiraling downfall in the NBA. Only wearing three shirts???? The guy could be clinically depressed or suicidal even! And in a setting where pressure and stakes are a practically an all-time high, it doesn't make it easier. Then of course you add in the T1D and the ACL injury and he's just doneskis.

I also think he just didn't have enough life experience or maturity for when he entered the NBA. Spokane is a super white town. Like you said, he had never left i, clearly had some personal hurdles to get through with not showering and just likely did not fit in much. That being said, had he not got injured, it sounded like he matured a lot. He was one of the few teammates Kobe really respected because of his work ethic, he just didn't have enough after his injury.
