    Quick tip: If you break the inside of the coloured pencil, you can hold it over a flame and the wax will melt a bit and glue back together. NOTE: do not hold it over for too long or the was will just melt out of the casing, and do not hold it directly over the flame or it might burn the wood.

    I use a hand crank pencil sharpener, the kind you mount on a wall. My dad got it for me and I think it's absolutely the best!

    I bought a canvas and elastic roll-up case for my pencils and I love it. It is easy to find what you want and easy to put it back and everything stays in the same order. Plus each pencil is well cushioned, particularly the points, when you roll it up....and very portable too, if you want to draw outside or travel or something. But - all roll-up cases are not equal - research a little bit.

    I use food cans whatever size I want, and have attached a few together before by using pretty duct tape. Duct tape comes in so many beautiful designs now! The cans then work great because I have a lot of art supplies and it keeps them all separated as to how I want to use them. Don't use cans that have a pull top though, as they can cut your fingers even if you are careful!

    I am going to invest in an electric sharpener. I was sharpening a red pencil today with a hand held one and it broke three tomes before I gave up and had to use another red one. I have about 5 of each colors that Crayola offers, I'm a bit obsessed. :)

    Really good information! I was wanting to see what worked for you for storing your pencils and how to sharpen them. I just found for me what is the best storage for more than just pencils depending on how many you have but I got on Amazon a 3 drawer wood pastel box! It's awesome and it may take up a little space on your desk but you can put things on top so it just gives a step up of desk space. The one I got has a foam lining in each drawer and with the foam insert it will hold 41-46 in each drawer, w/o the foam inserts 86 or 87. Both with or with out the foam inserts the amount depends on how tight of a fit you want or care out. Other than that it will obviously hold other things like pencil sharpener, stumps and black file, I think i got it for about $32? The price fluctuates through out the week and was as high as $40 but for some reason Thursdays if I can remember correctly was when the price was the lowest. A cool part is its unfinished or it might have a light coating.

    • @erins.5420
      @erins.5420 Před 9 lety +1

      Couldn't write any more lol...to finish where I left off....its unfinished wood for or has a light coating so your able to paint it, cover it whatever you like really! I love it already and I can pull the trays out and take it to watch some tv and not have to lug around the whole thing even though it's not very heavy.

    I found a good way to deal with break happy pencils is to sharpen them with a knife, for those who are old enough of course(if you do make sure the knife is facing away from any body parts!), it makes the lead stronger and it will hardly break when shaping

    A good alternative to those electric sharpeners would be the manual cranking versions of those, not only they do not need electricity, but you can also control on how much is being taken (depending on the model, mine is a cheapo but still amazing)

    Maybe try Fabre-Castell Polychromes. They're oil-based and do NOT get wax bloom and are not as prone to breakage. They're a bit more than Prismacolor and are compatible with them. The Polychromos keep a sharp point.

    @Kristie-ws9uu Před 8 lety +1

    Awesome!! Thank you so much for the tips!! Love them!!! I was having a lot of problems with breakage! So I am going to go and get an electric sharpener! Just a question, have you ever tried to put your pencils in a heating pad? I had heard that it helps to soften the wax to mould them back together again inside the pencil. I did try that and it worked very well!! Dropped a few on the floor again so I will warm them again and see if it helps or it could be the sharpener, my hand sharpener is getting older so electric here I come!!! Cheers!!!
    Heat the pencils on high for one hour in a heating pad.

    I keep my color pencils in two types of things first I would say I have 74 color pencils so it makes sense and I divide them in different color group like yellow to red and pink purples and flesh earthy tones blue.greens and then black white and grey .......
    Now I store my color pencil in cups and in a bucket with rubbers tied them up through colour groups. Hope it helped

  • @nokiot9
    @nokiot9 Před 7 lety

    I can't use hand sharpeners. Prismacolors are super prone to breaking. They're cores are always like off center and really soft so they always break before you can get it to a needle point. I bought this small battery powered "I point evolution" thing that actually has a standard sharpener inside of it, it just spins it in a fully encased thing by a motor. It saves SO much of the pencil. Brings it to a point in like 3 rotations of the inner thing which takes like a split second. It's the best investment I've ever made when it comes to colored pencils.

    • @nokiot9
      @nokiot9 Před 7 lety

      I'd burn through a whole brand new pencil trying to hand sharpen it... It was the most frustrating thing in the world. I wanted to scream. Not to mention not draw Anymore. Even when id go super slow and careful after the tip would be all wiggly like it broke higher up while spinning.

      Tommy Ohlrich Try the Faber Castell Polychromos. They are oil based, they have a harder lead, and the core is centered, Also, the core is bond to the wood casing so if the lead does break, it won't continuously fall out. Hope it helps!

    I am an art hobbyist, so what colored pencils would you recommend. I recently use crayola colored pencils, and they are quite nice, but I feel like I want to change. Now immediate change, but maybe a small fine touch set, or even a prang kit. No prismacolor or Fabre castle or whatever that's spelled. Just simple. Thanks!
