Dermot Mulroney (My Best Friend's Wedding, The Wedding Date) joins us this week to share remarkable stories (on and off set) throughout his career and how he uses them as mental health check ins for gratitude in everything he’s been able to accomplis. Dermot also talks about his experience as a cellist, being able to work scores in both the Star Trek and Star Wars universes, and how he’s chasing the golden goose of working with Yo-Yo Ma. We also briefly talk about old stories of protecting Drew Barrymore, his big start with Julia Roberts, and how he turned a corner after his divorce and sobriety. - Zábava
I guarantee it wasn't his performance. He's an incredible actor
Dude is such a legend man, just saw a movie last night with him about billy the kid as an old man. Fuck he killed it
Hands down.
The dune movies are almost a perfect representation of the book. Tim Blake Nelson plays a character who has like 2 lines of dialogue and only appears in two very short scene.
He was probably so good he made all the other actors look bad yeah
@@jotaylor3682 No, they aren't.
The scene was Buster Scruggs showing up and kicking Harkonen ass.

Well, if he was supposed to play Count Fenring, that wouldn't be too far from the truth ... Fenring, as far as the books goes being almost the Kwisatz Haderach and comparable to Paul in terms of fighting skills and presience, before Paul became the Lisan Al Gaib, would be a very exceptional person. With the difference that Fenring was sterile and seen a "failed" superbeing by the Bene Gesserit. Fenring is consideres one of the greatest fighters of the Dune universe.
@@CrniWuk oh, wow. I guess I didn't catch who he was supposed to play. I hope he appears in some director's cut .
God damn, he is so gracious about it. No ego at all. What a gent
That's the kind of professionalism that keeps getting you work! The energy given off by actors with ego problems is no fun to work around
Wow yeah the gracious polite actor that's so surprising!

“They loved him up and turned him into a horny toad!”
ooooh thats who he is. thanks
I'm with you fellows 😊
I would pay a lot of money to see Tim Blake Nelson as Fenring.
oh, he'd be great for that part. Are you sure that was it, or just guessing? If he acted with Brolin, those two characters don't interact (in the book, at least). But he may have meant "being on the set" with Brolin?
@@egoborder3203 could've had something to do with the ending maybe
I'd love to see him and Lady Fenring using their weird secret language during conversations with others. It sounds like thinking and hesitation noises (things like "hmm," or "ahh") and when I read their conversations in the book, in my head they sound like the painfully annoying way upper class Southern USA men spoke in the late 19th century. Kind of like Trelawney in Red Dead Redemption 2, or Val Kilmer in Tombstone (except, although accurate, he toned it down a lot).
This was also my first thought (cause of his facial features) that he would be great Fenring. But then he said about working with Josh Brolin, like he had a scene just with him and it didnt make sense. Maybe he was called in to play Staban Tuek, the smuggler who took in Gurney before he reunited with Paul??
@@lm7_gio that was my initial thought, but in the book that's a very brief moment. Maybe Villeneuve included him in later scenes as well
The actor he’s talking about is probably Jennifer Jason-Leigh. She was supposed to be in Eyes Wide Shut, but Kubrick cut her from the film.
what a blessing…terrible movie!

Another example was Adrian Brody showing up to the premiere of The Thin Red Line and discovering Terrance Mallick cut him out of the film after watching it.
Wasn’t he marketed as the main character leading up to release?
Brody is still in the movie, it is just most of his scenes were cut. What makes it worse is that he was under the impression that he was going to be the main character.
Christopher Plummer got mad a Malick for him cutting out Plummers speech in The New World.
tbf Adrian Brody should be cut out of all films bc he sucks
@cassun603 I agree, an overrated actor who when you go back and watch some of those big early movies he did, he's not actually very good in them
Sure Stephen McKinley Henderson was disappointed to be cut for time, his role was more significant as well
I love DV but I hate him for cutting Thufir and Fenring out of the movie. And I hate that he doesn't even make extended versions! What the fuck. I just don't understand it. We fans would pay for it with gold.

@@elijahalbistonmore isn’t always better. Even 15-20 minutes of extra footage can throw off the pacing of a film and make it less effective
@@janmajer4662 It's likely Denis Villeneuve removed them for pacing reasons. One scene can definitely make or break a film. For example, are the extra scenes in the LOTR Extended Editions really necessary? No, they're just cool extra stuff, but I've heard a lot of people argue that it completely messes up the pacing of the films. I'd rather have a good film missing some things than a terribly overstuffed film
I went to Holland Hall school in Tulsa, OK. There was a talent show, this little kid named Tim Nelson was in it, imitating a local furniture magnate, John F. Lawhon, who had an outsized local TV ad presence, and kind of a deadpan/loud mouth frog sort of delivery. And there's Little Timmy, just NAILING it. "Hello. I'm Joooohn - F. - Lawwwww-hon, of the Joooohn. - F. - Lawwwwwhon Fuuuurniture Commmmpany....". Brought the house down. It ALL started there.
Awesome story.. can’t believe it doesn’t have more likes 👍
Dune 2 was about minorities beating evil (whites). Tim Nelson just isn't scary and twisted looking enough for the small hat production team.
@@TheBelrick That is so not what Dune is about... It's a cautionary tale against messianic figures, and people becoming so engrossed in their leader they are unable to see how evil he's become. You'll notice the scenes of the pile of Atreides bodies being torched in part one, and the pile of Harkonen bodies being torched at the end of part 2...
@@jamalkazi2820 You misunderstood me. Dune the books and the original Dune movie are about what you describe
But not what the Dune 2 remake (look up who owns the studios) are about.
They literally cast wmales as the villains and minorities took up all the heroic characters
No human should watch or support in anyway that movie or new star wars or any other modern hate filled film
@@TheBelrick Thanks for your considerate reply. I see what you mean, but politely disagree. If Lady Jessica and the Reverend Mother aren't conniving villains in their own right, then I don't know who is. Extended cut plz Denis, take a leaf out of Peter's book
I wish he would, but Denis Villeneuve thinks cut scenes should stay gone
Peter?
@@CheriptheRipperJackson
It's his stance that there is a single vision, the only version of every film. No director cuts, no extended versions, no deleted scenes, nothing.
Yeah, but keep it a leaf at the start of Peter's book, cause after the middle he just went for the cash out like all the rest.
Love all the work you do Michael. Thanks for covering this topic. Fans have been very curious about his role in Dune Part Two so it's nice to hear some info on it.
He mentions working with Josh Brolin, What scene could have it been? He was probably not Count Fenring then...
@@mjaadaHe could still be. In the book Count Fenring was in the throne room at the end with Gurney and everyone else.
@@mjaada He's supposed to be a Spice smuggler, probably Staban/Esmur Tuek.
Extremely underrated actor, loved him in the Watchman!
Hasimir Fenring is a tough sell for the casual fan as he really is an outlier of the hidden agenda in the Duneiverse, and not a major part of the story of the first book. But at least we got some Margot Fenring.
Until you find out the the Fenrings are almost the whole damn story. They're just very good at hiding their plans under the plans of others.
You know "plans within plans within plans." The innermost plan is always the Fenring's.
I was going to say I just figured Denis didnt see a reason to introduce him since hes literally never mentioned ever again after the first book
The point of his character is to show that there are others than Paul that could be the kwizatz haderach. Therefore is "chosen one" quality is artificial on both sides. He is the lisant al gain thanks to BG propaganda and the KH thanks to BG genetic meddling, there is nothing special about him.
Fenring, as a eunuch, is also à representation of what Paul could become if he doesn't win against the emperor and the BG. If they can't control him, they will cut his line, therefore he must subdue them definitely.
It's one of my favorite chractercbut indeed a hard sell. His role has been divided between margot (narratively) and feyd (thematically).
Hasimir Fenring is possibly one of the most *moral* characters in “Dune”. He’s a failed Kwisatz Haderach and I think he knows it - but when he is given the chance to fight (and probably kill) Paul, he declines.
Serving the "casual fan" at the expense of long-term completeness is one of my few criticisms of Villeneuve's decisions. That's fine for Part 1, but he earned total authority for Part 2, so I'm at a loss why he cut so much. Why does the Spacing Guild suddenly not exist???
I haven't seen Old Henry get enough attention. Incredible film and performance by Tim Blake Nelson.
Release the extended cut! Also, where is the Buster Scruggs Universe?
denis said he wont do it. his answer to this was that if it was cut out, it was for a reason but he also said it hurt him but that's also likely his intuition tell him to keep it in if it hurts.
@@kevinfelix2543 Yeah, I believe him about not releasing an Extended Cut, but I call bullshit on the reason.
It's not a coincidence that the "perfect" version of the movie happens to be the maximum length that movie studios are willing to allow.
He's not going to release an extended cut for the same reason that most refuse to release them. They don't like it when people tell them they made a mistake cutting things.
@@bobson3014 I don't think that was the case for Peter Jackson with Lord of the Rings. Speaking for myself and as a fan who asked Peter if he would make a super cut of every scene that was cut from the extended edition, people simply want to see every shot because they have a hunger for more of that world, even if it didn't play a huge role. Denis shouldn't see it as being questioned for why, but rather as a realization that people want to see as much of that world as he shot/Written. There's a hunger for more world-building, whether it's a minor or significant part, be it a location or a character that makes a brief appearance. Book adaptations should be given an exception on runtimes.
@@bobson3014 I think he believes in working within limitations, which I think is something good, especially nowadays when movies and shows overextend themselves without need and end up hurting the final product. Having those limitations forces you to make choices that you wouldn't otherwise. Some people work better with a deadline in the horizon, for example.
Denis doesn't do directors cuts
A scene with Gurney? OMFG Denis has been crazy at the cutting floor...

@@rocktop-games yes, this is the difficulty of adapting such huge literary works. well he's got his trilogy, which is good, but really the studio should just stay the hell out of his way and let him get on with it. we're used to long movies now and i don't think anyone would have a problem with a 3.5hr epic, especially if the theatres would give us a 10 minute intermission in the middle (for us old folks!).

Described as small, unassuming, awkward, and quiet. A failed Kwisatz Haderach, and a eunuch, so that his failed bloodline could no longer continue.
This is why, despite my huge respect for him, I so vehemently disagree with Denis on not including deleted scenes on the home release. I understand why scenes get cut and I think including those scenes, along with a commentary track, can be so educational as to why directors and their editors make these hard decisions for the benefit of the whole film. Not including that footage on the home release and just keeping it locked up on a hard drive somewhere, though, is just wasteful of the footage and antithetical to film preservation. Put the damn scenes on the disc!!!
Agree. I will never forgive him not giving us anything more. Damn!!
I'll never understand why. An extended cut doesn't in any way negate the final version that was the theatrical release. This whole thing just comes off as Petty as when George Lucas try to wipe out any record of the original unedited Star wars movies.
i doubt it's that simple. agents, politics, contracts etc. not just up to one person.

Looking forward to learning more about Tim Blake. I was really impressed with his performance in Old Henry but then he impressed me more in the features during an interview with himself and the director. He was incredibly insightful and where the director struggled to find words to respond during the interview, Tim described everything so clearly and with such eloquence it was almost more enjoyable than the movie.
I hope they release a director's cut and have his scene in it. He is such an amazing humble actor. I would truly.
Love to see what part he played
I really hope this scene is available on the BluRay!

Without even watching I can tell he was supposed to be Count Fenring.
I would see a 6 hour cut in 360p with unfinished fx

this is a great interview, what a legend
Tim is always one of, if not the most memorable character in most anything he's in so I hope he isn't losing any sleep thinking it was his fault because he's consistently great.
The finished film is so barebones from the book it felt very lacking to me. With that said I watched at least 5 times so far and will watch it many more times and enjoyed the movie. This retelling of Dune was very interesting and enjoyable. I read the book when I was teenager (30+ years ago) and it shaped my understanding of SciFi
The new Dune movies feel too [current year] at times: very barebones, very utilitarian and with drab modernist aesthetics in architecture, fashion, etc.
I was hoping for something more bombastic, colorful and inclusive of side plots.
I mean, if the character he played is in Dune Messiah (the book), then they could bring him back for Dune 3.

Snyder didnt grow, I just hope Villeneuve will, and start respecting narrative structure of movies, and will stop experimenting with it when making dense stories like Dune. I dont have problems when he makes Incendies and Arrival (especially Arrival, where a movie won because he directed it just like Dunkirk could have been made only by Nolan).

He’s great, too, so it’s definitely not reflective of his ability, but, as an actor, how can one not doubt themselves after it happens so many times? Crazy.
Just curious, which other franchises has he been cut down or excluded from?

Bummer that he was cut out. Would’ve been great to see Count Fenring in this adaptation of Dune. A minor character who I think was only in 2 scenes in the book, so I can see why his character was cut.
It’s annoys me that Denis never releases a Director’s cut. I understand a theatrical cut needs to be done for time but if the scenes help the movie, finish them and let the audience watch them at home.
There are legendary directors who feel they are never quite done with a movie. Then there are those who say, “That’s it!”
With streaming though, there would be a place for longer versions where the audience at home can stop and restart as they wish. It’s a different experience than in a commercial theatre.
Now I want a directors cut with the additional hour and half of film that got cut that includes TBNs scenes!
I’ll never understand why his scenes were cut. Even though his character would essentially be a cameo, he is in full essence, just as important as Paul.
