i'm really happy there is actually someone who like utawarerumono series since many dislike it cause of fanservice and slice of life story. also kuon is my fav character from the series too
It needs more attention for sure. To the people that don't like the fan service, please find me one (1) visual novel that doesn't have any whatsoever lol...
@@sparklesparklesparkle6318 Not sure I would consider 13 Sentinels a visual novel, though. It is heavily story-based, but given the gameplay style, you would have to also call Odin Sphere and Dragon's Crown visual novels, since the non action-stage portions of all 3 are literally the same thing. But yes, minus the fact that everyone appears to be naked in their cockpits there's not really any fanservice-type stuff to be found there.
Great to hear this series get some love - my brother swears up and down on this series that it's one of the best JRPG stories of all time. I picked up the main 3 on his recommendation, but haven't played them yet. This is really prompting me to do so in the near future though!
Me too. They're dirt cheap on steam. But I just don't really have the motivation to play them.
Yeah you should start them, just don't expect the story to be too fast paced as it's slow world building and slowly revealing the mystery around it.
I can answer the question: Utawarerumono is in my opinion one a best franchise ever created, Utawarerumono Mask of Truth is one of rare game that make me cry 😅
Lol you know this was a hentai game with rpg elements but the console versions I never played so don't know much about it being 15 at the time shit was wild when that first screen popped up

One of my favorite series. The character development, combat and story are just so enjoyable.
Honestly what is probably my one of my favorite part of the game is the characters and how they interact through one and another…which I know about the Romaji translation of their names before everything came westward. Still for the first game the group and as seen in the later games the party of the first game are essentially a very close and tight knit family group as exemplified with Kuon’s interactions with them. And for Itsuwari no Kamen and Futari no Hakuoro the development of all the party throughout the games and Haku through the story is nothing short of spectacular. Than there is the newest edition Monochrome Moebius, seeing how Oshutoru was in the second game and seeing his interactions with other characters and his legend develope is pretty interesting as the characters further explore new territory in this world. Considering there seems to be at least 1 more future game to follow this new journey, can’t wait to see where this goes.
Perfect timing - I've been thinking of checking the series out, and decided to see what the price is on Steam. Winter sale is going on right now, and the games are very heavily discounted. Just picked them up for 70%+ off. Thanks for another great video!

You will not regret it, I swear. It's a hell of a ride, and with all 3 games together (especially when you throw in bonus battles and stuff) you're looking at probably about 200 hours total, and it is an incredibly emotional journey, too.

Oh, there is no "probably" about it, you definitely should. As much as I love the first Uta, the sequels really drive it home. One of, if not the best, experiences I ever had in gaming.
glad this is finally getting some love. i played all three in a row last xmas holiday and couldn't put it down. i also had doubts when i started, picking them up on more or less of a lark. but wow did they exceed expectations.

Great series that I’m coincidentally watching (game play throughs) while slaving away on the treadmill at the gym. Really enjoyable. The only disadvantage is I have to stare continuously at my tablet as I’m reading subtitles but it makes that hour and a half go by fast!

Thank you for all the information! I just picked up Mask of Truth as a blind buy because I saw it was a Strategy RPG for cheap. I had no idea it was the last in a trilogy. I'm glad I watched this before playing.
Incase some of you guys missed it, Monochrome mobius is out on steam which focuses on a younger Oshotor(one of the characters from Utawarerumono mask of deception) story with a turned based battle system and area field map similar to old jrpgs. Theres also that dokapon up featuring utaware characters sadly only in Japan and the new detective utaware game recently with a trailer.
Hope it gets a EN physical release.

Glad you you really enjoyed the series! Kuon is also one of my favorite characters ever! If you really like RPGs with a visual novel style of story telling you should definitely try out Library of Ruina it also has an amazing story and really interesting gameplay.

One of the best and most profound story I've ever read, all 3 of them. It's so good I experience it once and that's it, not gonna revisit it again. It have so much impact I played it 5-6 years ago and I'll still keep thinking about it
Started to play prelude to the fallen. I saw the second season of the anime. It's very good. Now that the 3rd season is on air I started the first game. It's the first visual novel I play. It's very anime with a portion of tactics.
Also, Kuon is really a fantastic character. Her personality have A LOT of deph.

Got into it through the og anime, reignited my interest via the second series, played mask of deception and truth after watching the second anime and hearing about the differences, the vns are among the best in the genre imo, and the combat is incredibly fun.
Definitely one of the best series i have ever played.

It's Visual Novel hybrid with SRPG battles.
For those who don't know. There is a new game in this series coming soon (kind of) called Monochrome Moebius. It's a prequel to all three games set in the country from the Mask Duology and you play as Oshtor (Character from Mask of Deception) in his past prior to Hakuowlo and Haku "waking up."
Edit: It might not actually be before Hakuowlo waking up. I don't really remember but it's definitely prior to the Mask Duology. Also, the game is actually already out. It was released on November 17th 😂
it's already out on Steam in English. No news on a western release of the console versions.
It takes place between the first and second game ( aprox ~10 years before the 2nd game).
Prelude to the Fallen is the best starting point no question.
Mask of Truth hits a lot harder doing this.

One of the greatest things ever made
This series is one i have bot seen before. I only started watching the anime this year (i am relatively new to anime😂) but so far it has such a cool story with seriously nice world building and characters! Now i know more about it thabks to you Thanks for the recap. I will definitely get the games
Been a fan of the series since seeing the anime in the early 00s and finally finished the trilogy (so far) last year. It is so well written.
Only thing i don't like is the long visual novel aspect, if it was shorter would be better for me. If i have an hour available to play it could be that i'm reading and not "playing" during my playtime xD

Prelude to the fallen never really leave japan but at 2006 the anime comes out, gain some fans overseas and at 2008 some fan translation group called mirror moon finally release english translation patch so english speaker start playing and make enough fanbase so they make the sequel.
There’s actually another series also by these guys called Tears to Tiara, only in Japan though. The first one is about Celtic and Arthurian mythology where your protagonist is a fallen Angel who leads the forces of Avalon (including King Arthur) against the Roman Empire. The second one you play a Spanish lord who makes a pact with some Pagan god to again fend off Rome. I’ve watched the anime of the first one and seen a little gameplay from the second so my explanations are based on that.

Have played this series. Great series but not for everyone. Very heavily character and slice of life in them but damn are they good games. Simlpe yet fun gameplay.

There is also now a new JRPG set in the same universe as Utawarerumono, and is called Monochrome Mobius. It features cast members from the Mask games, and is set somewhere between Prelude to the Fallen (first game) and Mask of Deception (second game). However, it seems to be set up for at least a duology, so many plot points do not connect to Mask of Deception just yet.
Monochrome Mobius is still a great game (if not with the best of graphics), 100% recommend, especially if you have already played all of the 3 main games.
I saw the anime about seventeen years ago before learning it was based on a game. I loved the anime, but unfortunately, I do not enjoy playing that many Eastern rpg turn style strategy games.
I heard about it because I randomly seen it on ebay (the first one).
Will always be close to my heart these VN games. Not sure will anything beat them, do hope they bring continuation in VN game format again.
I truly love Utawarerumono. Some small detail which has been missed is that the original PC version also included a handheld game for the Aquaplus P/ECE in which you could get some extras by transferring your savegame. Picking up on some comments here: The 18+ scenes in the original version only take a few minutes in a multi-hour game - so I wouldn't really consider this an "18+ game". Btw. the original version didn't feature any voices. Although, there was a hacked version which combined the original game with the voice files from the PS2 version. The original version however did a way better job in translating the names! I mean "Hakuowlo" (is he an owl?!), "Karulau", ... REALLY?! These names are "HAKUORO" and "KARURA"!
If I'm not wrong, the original games on PC don't just have some "fanservice", they're hentai games. With sex. It doesn't change the quality of the game though, a lot of good games are hentai games, like Fate/stay night. It's just usually removed with the console adaptation.

Good summary. Sidenote but the Dokapon UP!! Spinoff for PS4 and Switch (basically the latest in the Dokapon series by Steam with Utawarerumono series) has a fan translation for the Switch version. One of the few complete Switch fan translations to date.

So in short:
.A visual novel with ecchi, Fanservice but with heavy story content and a lot of text to read.
.One of your favorite females heroines of all time in JRPGs is here (a really relevant point considerating you are really a selective guy on these terms)
.If you loved Trails or Suikoden series, you could possibly love this one too.
Just to add on. The OG VN had a fan translation. That version has H scenes in it which actually have plot relevance. Options are available if you want to play that version but you don't need to feel like you need to. They don't exactly completely remove the H scenes in Prelude because they actually do a pretty good job of letting you know they did the dirty without actually showing you. So the narrative, the character relations, and the emotional impact from them are actually maintained unlike most other VN translations that butcher the game with unnecessary censorship. Prelude even adds a few story arcs and characters not in the original game so don't worry about playing the original one because you feel like you're missing out on something important. Prelude is the way to go and you still get the full unfiltered experience.
@@CalebPorter1105 I don't really matter the H scenes personally. If those are there, I want to have the most complete possible experience of the game to feel it completely.
But if Prelude has all the full experience, then prelude is my start.
@@theultimatedragoon2231 Cool. Yeah, this was just for anyone else who looks through the comment section but trust me when I say VN's get terrible treatment during translation and Prelude was DEFINITELY not one of them that suffered. It's a great translation.

On this side of the world, shows with sex scenes or really explicit content gets quite criticized for a lot of SjWs or certain Groups.. or these games have low sells except some Dead or Alive games for example. Now imagine a visual novel JRPG with tons of text to read having those H scenes and more explicit stuff. Surely it becomes a hazzle.
The last VN I played was Katawa Shoujo and it was a very good game for me.. it surprised me. I loved Lilie route.

Correction the Fifth game its Turn based RPG called Monochrome Mobius: Rights and Wrongs Forgotten it is available on Steam for now in english
Japan has it on Ps4 and Ps5 and PC hopefully will see the game soon on the English Psn store
While it is preferable to play Prelude to the Fallen first, but just like the Trails series, you don't have to to understand the story. Played Mask of Deception and Mask of Truth first and understood everything. I had to order Prelude to the Fallen from Europe. Even Deception and Truth aren't really common.
The "spinoff" Zan is a decent hack n slash game also.
An improvement utawarerumono zan 2 has is that your special can be used more than once and your character has access to all of Thier skills not just one at a time also what do you think of monochrome Mobius ?
I remember playing the original on pc like..7-8 years ago, have yet to get around to playing the 2 mask games.
Damn. Good thing I saw this video. I started with Mask of Deception but am only a little into it. I have Prelude to the Fallen. I should go back and play that one.
Luckily the compete bundle of games is currently on sale for steam (Xmas 2022.) Was always interested and now I've finally picked them up.
*EDIT* after 85 hours, I've now completed Utawarerumono Prelude to the Fallen! And it was great!
I'm about to finish mask of truth and I'm liking it so far prelude to the fallen is the only one I didn't like due to some of the tropes and how some things end including who the mother of the female main character is
The first game was a pc srpg erotic visual novel with nudity, and it was fan translated back then i think. They obviously removed the nudity once it hits consoles

To be honest, I kinda miss those porn scenes, not because of they are sexual, but because they are extremely emotional. After the developers removed those scenes, I always feel something is missing. Maybe it's the pain and agony to seal off the man that a girl/woman gave her body and soul to by her own hand.

All I know is touka and the tiger girl with the giant hack sword. From the anime and aquapazza fighting game. Touka my fav.
it really is a visual novel (a lot of reading) with srpg gameplay element. a lot of fan service and slice of life even though the game theme is about war. but the cast are amazing and story are very good.
This trilogy would do well on the switch. Seems like both the VN and SRPG aspects would serve the portable well. Mask of truth is cheap but the other two are expensive.

Sucks that Atlus seems to not have reissued the license for the 2nd and 3rd game. No way to get those without buying the physical versions. Hopefully by the time I'm caught up with the trails games they will be re-issued onto PSN or even ported to switch.

Do you know of Monochrome Moebius? It actually slipped under my radar until recently. It's a prequel where you play as Oshtor. It doesn't have the Utawarerumono title which is why most people probably missed it.

I watched the original Utawarerumono anime for the first time before Mask of Deception anime released in 2015 because I read that the 2006 anime was the first in the series. I loved the original and watched it multiple times, Mask of Deception anime didn’t hook me to the characters unlike original which made me root for the OG characters when they made an appearance in the sequels.
I watched the original anime with fan subs so whenever I see Hakuoro’s name spelled as Hakuowlo as the official English name, I just ignore it like in the Fate series, Saber’s name Artoria/ Arturia is I prefer over the official English name Altria.
Still hoping Zan 2 gets an English release since it's a big step up from Zan 1 in every way.
I own the trilogy, Prelude to the Fallen is quite expensive for Pal versions though.
Utawarerumono is great game, i remember watched the first adapatation years ago, then the second adaptation are out nearly the same time with the 2nd game release, which i think another form of advertisement for the game.
I hope they port this game to switch so i can play mobile.
The main reason why the first game took so long to get an oversea adaptation is because the series started as an Eroge. When you reach the 2nd game you realise that this fanservice part isn't really nonsensical and tie-in the plot. Other than that, the series is bigger than just those 5 games, as the characters have crossovers in fighting games, and a new game (will take place between the 1st game and 2nd game from the point of view of Yamato generals) is in the making but seems to be a classic RPG with small party.

Played the series during the summer of covid 2020. I loved it so much. There's a lot of slice of life moments to read through, but that's what gives it some real extra charm and the anime doesn't do enough to showcase the amazing story of the series, if you're deciding to watch the anime instead of playing the game. To think the original game used to be an eroge/hentai game too! But those scenes got removed in the new version of the first game.
