  • Have you ever had your knee buckle when you are going down the stairs, stepping off a curb or just walking down the street? If so, you need to check out this muscle, the Vastus Medialis. In this video, I will break down the anatomy of the muscle, why the knee buckles, how to assess this yourself and finally, what exercises you need to do to fix it yourself.

    I fell a few days ago in my garage and skinned my knees good fashion. I've been doing this off and on for the past 5 years. I fell a few years ago while inside the FedEx wharehouse and my right knee was swollen and stiff. Fortunately some ice packs and Ibuprofin fixed me right up and i was able to work the next day. Since then, when i do fall, I usually skin my knees, and there is soreness from the surrounding scars but no pain when I walk. It happens enough to be a little paranoid, so i try to be extra careful as I walk. In the years I worked at Caterpillar BCP (2001-2012) it was never a concern, but every since that fall at FedEx in 2015, it hapens once or twice a year.

    I appreciate your knowledge, thank you! For me personally it's not pain it's been force spiritually, physically in reality, targeting of specific areas of body, contamination, financially and psychologically with no break, repetitively bombarded on multiple levels and now the impact is showing on my physical body, their instability has created instability now of my temple.
    I'll try out some of these suggestions if they feel aligned, I feel it's to do with the front of the thigh being weak that's having a knock on effect on the knee...releasing itself.
    Metaphysics is because I've had my power taken, been bound unable to move forth, been forced to submit, not allowed to stand/be seen, most importantly NO SUPPORT.
    Had to giggle at the beginning (thank you for that) was thinking hope these exercises don't give me bodybuilders legs. Needed that release, thank you.

    Hey so out of nowhere when I was playing sports my knee got very very weak over time and started to hurt. Pretty much whenever I start moving around it is very stiff and weak, and then over time as I keep moving it gets very weak. When I sit down for a while or sleep then get back up I have to limp or it will be painful to walk normally. What should my routine be to fix this? Also I’m 14 and there’s probably growing pains involved too. Great vid :)

    I have this weird pain at my inner side of my right leg when i was kneeling and wanted to change my leg position. It felt like my knee went out of position like the muscle when out of place. And i could not straighten my leg. I had to bring my knee in somewhat find a sweet spot to put it in back into place. What do you think is the problem?

    • @EastWestPhysiotherapy
      @EastWestPhysiotherapy  Před 3 lety

      Hi, it's hard to definitively say without completing an assessment. It may be your knee cap (patella) that has shifted out of place due to the positioning of your knee. Can be caused by tight vastus lateralis, tight lateral retinaculum of the patella, shallow patellar groove, muscle imbalance of the knee, just to name a few. You want to get that assessed properly in order to treat it effectively..

    • @EastWestPhysiotherapy
      @EastWestPhysiotherapy  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi, stretching and releasing the trigger points in the VMO prevents the inhibition of the quadriceps, which can cause your knee to buckle when it undergoes an eccentric contraction (i.e. going down the stairs, landing during walking/running). While strengthening is fine, it does not address the trigger point issue.

My physio said I have no issues with the ligaments, however, my knee doesn’t sit in the groove ever so slight about 2 mm. My other knee completely fine, I wonder if these exercises will help with the buckling or if it’s something I’ll have to live with

    • @EastWestPhysiotherapy

      patellar dislocation is a different issue than the knee buckling. However, these exercises can help with that as well, but you will need more specific advice and treatments to effectively manage a patellar dislocation.

    • @EastWestPhysiotherapy
      @EastWestPhysiotherapy  Před rokem

      @bossminati it sounds like your grandpa may need to try his best to regain his full knee extension. When your knee is in a slight bent position, he is constantly needing to contract his quads to stay upright, and it sounds like it may be giving out due to fatigue. He needs to strengthen his quads, and try to regain his full knee extension to allow the quad muscle to not overwork. There may be other factors associated with this and I am only providing advice based on this little bit of informatuon. I recommend going to see a physio so he can have a thorough examination.

I cant swim breaststroke cause of this and my knee buckles like crazy after like 2 sprints... Problem i face is i need the help of some one to make me lie down. Raise my limbs . Too much of spasticity in the knee cap

  • @samkitty5894
    @samkitty5894 Před 7 měsíci +1

    If I'm squatting on the floor my left leg has zero power to push me back up. Right leg is OK.
    If I'm lying on my back, I can not lift my left leg off the floor at all, not even a fraction of an inch.
    I can painfully pull my left leg back towards my butt, and painfully extend it back out. I also don't have a knee jerk reflex on this knee. It is also "tricky" as it can collapse at any time without warning. My upper left leg with quads looks and feels different. Mushy and soft. Doctors I have seen so far were of no help.

      Hi, you may need to work on strengthening the lower body (hips and knees), sounds more like muscle weakness.

    How do I help a knee that buckled like this :I was walking up a ramp and took a right turn and my knee buckled to the right,once I fell I felt my knee mid fall go back into place,doctors told me ligaments are torn however nothing is broke,it doesn’t hurt really anymore however I can’t walk straight I limp when walking not limp but jump kinda.

    • @EastWestPhysiotherapy
      @EastWestPhysiotherapy  Před 3 lety

      Hi Diez, the knee buckling in your case may be due to VMO tightness/weakness but the subsequent injury may be due to ligament sprain. Hard to say what it is but I will recommend that you check with a Physiotherapist to have that properly assessed and be given a program to help improve your range of motion and strength of your knee.

      @@EastWestPhysiotherapy update I have surgery on the my knee I’m a couple days I can walk fine however the doctors have to get the torn cartilage out of my knee,not even 5 minutes ago I just buckled the other knee 😭fml, but it’s not that bad it’s a minor buckle!

    • @EastWestPhysiotherapy
      @EastWestPhysiotherapy  Před 3 lety

      @@nitroDBD The other knee may have been used more while you were recovering from your injured knee, so tightness could have developed there. So stretch and releasing the tension in the quads may be beneficial. Hope your recovery goes well :)

    I have all the symptoms mentioned in the video. But the exercises not reducing the tightness.

    • @EastWestPhysiotherapy
      @EastWestPhysiotherapy  Před 11 měsíci

      Hi, you may not have the same knee buckling situation as mentioned in the video. This is a VMO tightness that causes the knee buckling. Please check with your medical professional for advice regarding your specific condition.

      Hi, doesn't sound like buckling knees - may be fatigue. Check with a local PT for assessment and diagnosis!

    I have no pain. My knee just quits and I'm down. It's like it just disconnects from my brain. I've fallen over 30 times. I hyperextended my knees to try and keep them from buckling and now my balance sucks. I'm at wits end.

    • @EastWestPhysiotherapy
      @EastWestPhysiotherapy  Před 2 lety

      Hi Michelle, try to release the inner quads (VMO). That area may be tight and causes the inhibition (buckling) of the quads.

    I would have a little knee buckling...but it never gave me trouble...all I did was pick up a bundle of clothes standing straight up and the next thing I know for a week I would scream with moving a certain way...NOW, it the screaming pain is gone...but a dull one remains...AND I CANNOT GO DOWN THE STAIRS...I AM SO AFRAID..I HOLD ON BUT IT BUCKLES WHAT DO I DO

    • @EastWestPhysiotherapy
      @EastWestPhysiotherapy  Před 3 lety

      Hi Victoria, there are many causes of that and some solutions are listed in the video. You may also need to check your hips and make sure they are strong and flexible because they are very important for going up/down the stairs. Check with a Physiotherapist to have it assessed and treated properly.
