My Grandparents had a house in LaJolla and my parents lived in Sherman Oaks and retired to Palm Springs. I left the state to retire as I could not afford California. I could not afford San Diego even when I was working making 80K a year.

I'm a senior, we had ample opportunity to purchase a house that was affordable and easy to qualified for for decades. I had to leave LA for Phoenix but was able to buy a nice house with mortgage less than LA rent. Those days are over now, but a shame so many seniors never bothered to buy a house when they were younger.
Some places in this country those seniors who bought houses, paid them off, and counted on living in them in their old age are now being forced to sell those houses because they can no longer afford the higher insurance, taxes and HOA fees being forced on them. Seems to be a no win situation any which way you turn.
