    Most legends always made Morgana out to be evil, but here, I truly feel for her. She KNEW that wasn't her father that night. Also, that was a really sick trick Merlin and Uther played on Igraine. Especially since Igraine thought it was the spirit of her husband coming to visit her that night. Nope, just a sick individual lusting over her.

    • @kevinnorwood8782
      @kevinnorwood8782 Před 2 lety +38

      glowworm2 Honestly, this event is the reason why Morgan Le Fay's lore gets split down the middle in modern interpretations/revisions/retellings/etc. In the original myths, she and Arthur were NOT related (I'm talking the original texts by the monks Gildas and Geoffrey of Monmouth). She is simply an extremely high-ranking sorceress and also the Queen of Avalon (she may still have been Merlin's student in those versions, but I don't remember). It's only in later versions like Le Mort De Arthur which started recasting her as King Arthur's half-sister. And because she was with her mother at Tintagel when this happened (in some versions, Igraine's husband put her there because Uther's feelings for her were actually MUTUAL, and he didn't want her cheating on him), this is why Morgana's lore gets split down the middle. In half of the versions, because she knows Arthur is a bastard child born out of wedlock, she hates his guts and tries to undermine him at every turn. In the other half of the versions (the ones I actually prefer), even though she knows Arthur is technically a bastard, she doesn't care about that fact. She still loves her little brother and wants to help him in any way she can.
      Also, in nearly all the versions I've seen and/or read, Morgana DOESN'T run to embrace Uther (disguised as her father). This is the point where she first displays signs that she has magic of her own, because she can actually see THROUGH Merlin's spell and see this is actually King Uther. She tries to warn her mother, but Igraine brushes her off.

      It's why I like the versions of the story which feature Arthur and Morgan finding a way to reconcile, and she carries him off to Avalon after his final battle.
      Whatever happened between their parents, it doesn't matter. They're siblings, and they have to work things out.

      It is all kinds of sicken especially since Igraine's husband died in a war that about Uther wanting to bed the Duke's wife only for her to end up marrying him anyway.

    Over the centuries a large amount of ink has been expended trying to find an actual historical Arthur. This is largely due to the only near contemporary account of Britons fighting Saxons (written by Gildas) not mentioning him. However there is a body of Welsh medieval literature that portrays Arthur, not as a mortal man fighting Germanic invaders, but as a supernatural guardian figure of Britain who moves in a world of gods, magical cauldrons and fantastical adventures. In Caitlin R Green's book 'Concepts of Arthur' this line of enquiry is followed and she makes a compelling argument for him originally being a mythical figure turned later into a human king. One poem in that literature 'Preiddeu Annwfn' (Spoils of the Otherworld) is one of the most cryptic, mystical pieces you will ever read.

    10 years ago I read Mary Stewart's Merlin trilogy...and then her Mordred sequel...and then the weird Holy grail spinoff. Anyway, I loved them so much, and she had an interesting take on this story that, like the general theme of her version of Arthur, tried to be grounded in realism. If any Arthur fans have never read her books, they should.

    It is good to know that Arthur was not originally a king, but a warlord, and Merlin didn't exist in the early legends of Arthur. New people and stories were added over a long period of time and many of the stories and elements we are familiar with are only from this later era. For example, the popular Le Morte d’Arthur was published in the late 15th century, about 800 years after the first Arthur story. However, the legend of Arthur didn't develop to its full extent and in its current form until the 19th century.
