I am one of those who like "traditional" services but we don't have one of those. 😂 I feel like many church focus on providing a concert or experience and not worshiping. Also the extremely loud music at many churchs make my tinnitus go crazy.

Nostalgia for me is Forever Reign and How He Loves... Always love the vlogs! I think almost this toxic nostalgia is something we dealt with here for a while. We used to do this large "Living Christmas Tree" performance every year with a massive tree filled with the choir, and when we stopped that to focus on serving the community at Christmastime, we definitely set ourselves up for this idea of "the good old days." My pastor gave me some great advice, saying that "we would rather look through the windshield of what God's going to do than focus most of our attention through the rearview mirror of what God has already done." Nice to look back, and we should from time to time, but can't be everything! Great vid, bro!

I'm part of a church that looks and feels very similar to yours.
So, yesterday, we worshipped with "Heart of Worship." It really felt like it was just a couple years ago we were originally singing that, but it's been over 25 years since that came out!
A couple Sundays ago, the worship team led "How Great Thou Art" and many people were lifting their voices and their hands. It seems like throwing in some nostalgia every once and awhile is like a little gift, or a little reminder of how far we've come in our walk.

From King David to today, the vast library of worship songs is a legacy that any worship pastor can tap into. If the Holy Spirit is truly guiding the preparation for a worship experience, any thought of "Will they like it?" really has no place. That said, many older songs focus on who Jesus is, while many modern songs focus on who I am because of Jesus. As long as the worship pastor remains flexible to the leading of the Spirit, the blend of old and new will lead people to the cross.

So true! Listen to youth and young people when you play a “throw back song or an old hymn” it’s totally disengaging for them sometimes haha. I’ve been hyped about the nostalgia and spoken to the youth and young adults and they were like why’d we play that song that didn’t connect.
Great to have a balance and a throw back - but good to remember we’re all different and it’s not just about us. It’s about those who don’t know him

Agree that we have to have an attitude of "it's not about me". I have to tell myself that as well :)

      Yea- it was.
I Give You My Heart was released in 1995 on “God Is In the House”.
Cary Me was released in 2000 on “For This Cause”- a great album.
There is nothing Like is the 2005 United album “Look To You”.
Mighty to save has an iconic, into. Instant recognition! Pure genius.
Great vlog BTW- I really enjoy it.

Looking back, it's amazing how many songs Hillsong pushed out in their prime. My wife and I bought a bunch of their CDs.

I had a guy for years say to me worship was so much better back when we had our eight channel Mackie and everybody just had their amp up on stage, no microphones, just playing as loud as they needed to with unshielded drums acoustic in the room. He would always say if he had in his way, we would go back to that back to when musicians actually knew how to collaborate with one another. Finally, after like five or six years of saying that he finally admitted that all the changes that we made and all the things that we’ve done have actually made things much better and much easier to participate in, it just was uncomfortable changes for him.

Amen to this! Currently at our youth conference in the UK with 5000 young people proving the future, even if not to my taste, is great! We cannot discard the past but we also cannot live in it! We have a redemption hymnal sunday twice a year where we break out the old classics and don't do anything modern. This is great for our older folk and me (34! 🤣) However, we owe it to our young people to allow them to have their church and their moments instead of reliving our moments over and over again!
But also my back hurts and I'm nostalgic for when sleeping in a tent was much more fun! 🤣🙌

  • @moniquewrites9046

There are denominations such as Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, etc. who have gone completely unchanged and their churches are growing.
While I am opposed to traditions of man, I am also opposed to the works of the flesh that churches rely on in the west today instead of the Holy Spirit to draw men to Him.
I am opposed to churches spending large budgets on stage design and hours on getting the right angles when their communities are in shambles.
4:54 this scripture was prophesying about JESUS not the West’s never ending lust for what catches the eye. Let’s not read into scripture.
John 12:32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw everyone to Myself."
It is equally as dangerous to rely on the bells and whistles as much as it is the traditions of man to reach the lost.
    Why?
Because the focus is removed from God and placed on man’s efforts in the same way.
This year, I went to a liturgical EO service and it was just as welcoming and even more pleasant than the millennial ran college town church with lights cameras and action.
    Why?
It’s God’s SPIRIT not our efforts.
If we boast anything, let us boast in the Lord.

@@moniquewrites9046 thanks for the thoughts. I agree that we should rely on the Holy Spirit to guide us and not cling to man made traditions. Perhaps Ecclesiastes 7:10 would have been a better scripture to pull out the idea of Nostalgia.
