- The Boss SD-1 is pedal royalty, spanning decades and serving thousands well but is there a new drive on the block? Can the Joyo Sweet Baby Overdrive really be better than the Boss Super Overdrive SD-1? We put both of these absolute drive titans through their paces on the first NTAT Vs of the year.
If you like these reviews and demos, don't forget to drop me a comment and let me know. By dropping a comment there, you will please the algorithm gods and make my videos more visible, which would be awesome. If you have one of these yourself, let me know how you are getting on with it yourself in a comment or a video response, I'd love to hear how it is getting on in your rig through different amps and guitars.
The demo gear in this video is all run through Practical Patch cables, including instrument cables and patch cables. These are using some top-quality components, including Neutrik jacks and Van Damme cable and are hand-assembled and tested in the UK. After having off-the-shelf cables for years and suffering failures again and again, I bought some Practical Patch cables and have been happier than ever with them. They also don’t cost you the Earth, which some other hand made cable companies seem to do. If you want to find out more, head over to www.practicalpatch.co.uk to see what they have to offer.

I have both because that's the only way I can stay alive. I have started to collect overdrives just cheap ones mostly. I like the sweetbaby better. But I like to use sd1 on top of it for solo stuff. Great video 🙂
I'm going to start a rehab club, I'm exactly the same 🤣🤣🤣 in the videos where you get to see my shelves, you'll see exactly what I mean.
I find it hard to choose but I think I'm going sweet baby too 👍
Sweet baby for me
I can respect that decision
I love boss pedals especially the SD-1 and DS-1…so I’m not going to say which one I like better.
I think you might have already said too much 😂😂😂 I think they are both stellar tbf
I built a SF Champ style tube amp, and it's really clean. Gorgeous, but clean. The Joyo Sweet Baby keeps the tonal character of my amp, but add that warm, smooth, glowing, natural tube driven push. My only other drive pedal is a RAT clone I made, right after the Sweet Baby. However, I found that the output volume of the Sweet Baby was too loud, the taper of the B50K output pot was too touchy at 9:o'clock. so I put a 15k resistor between pins 1 and 2, and now unity is at 12:noon, and the taper gives me way more control over the exact output I want. Oh, and I hope nobody hates me for it, but I took all the paint off the Sweet Baby, clean right down to the aluminum. The salmon pink/peach was just too much
Sounds like some nice mode there 👍
The SD-1 is one of the best pedals ever made IMO
It's a must have, for sure
For sure, little Magic box !
Never thought about comparing these two. But Sweet Baby > SD-1 for me.
Aye, I figured both are mid focused drive pedals you can pick up pretty cheap. Why not eh? I think I prefer the sweet baby too tbf
I have the JOYO Baatsin and was trying to sell it. Got some space on my pedalboard so I put the Baatsin back in. The Sweet OD sound is so perfect for low gain 70s 80s 90s rock like Carry on wayward son by Kansas now I am torned and don't wanna sell it anymore.
Ooh I've not tried that one. It's a multi overdrive isn't it?
@@BudgetPedalChap yes you should try it the sweet od and the suhr riot clones are the best. Beware though their volumes are different since it's an all analog circuit.
Hey, really dig your channel. I know it's not much but the Sweet Baby is slightly (1-2 dB to my ears) louder than the SD-1, and is exacerbated by the fact that it's more "scooped" than the SD-1, so it sounds even louder and, therefore, "better." Just being super nitpicky but please keep up the good work!
Yeah it can be tough to match the volumes perfectly but the mid hump in the joyo is definitely more pronounced. Cheers for the kind words 👍
Like the SB as an always on, and the SD-1 (Or in my case an MXR ZW-44. lol) as a boost to kick the Joyo into the stratosphere.
I could see that working well 👍
My current board...(son has borrowed my brown Mojo)
Sweet baby OD
Joyo Taichi
and 😊inevitability, PG Mojo.
Good stuff 👍 I've really gotta try that tai chi 😉
@@BudgetPedalChap It's a dumbleish pedal. Very nice.
Waiting for review of Joyo Vintage OD and Sweet Baby. Guessing the Vintage has a more mid thang and seemingly more low end, but Id like to hear Strat neck blues crunch chords lower neck (SRV) style. Amazingly, all I can find are HB clips many player thru Fender amps - go figure. Weird.
Sounds like a great comparison, I'll add it to my to do list 👍
Sweet Baby all day plus the SD-1 isn't true bypass and you can hear the grit bleeding through when the pedal isn't engaged.
A very reasoned argument there 👍
I dig that Sweet Baby
The sweet baby is sweet, baby 😂😂
I prefer the OD-1 on this, but I never buy Boss pedals: they always seem to alter my sound in a way I don't like. So maybe a clone. But I've already got a TS clone, and a pretty polyvalent distorsion, maybe I just don't need more than that! ^^
But then again, more is better 🤣🤣
@@BudgetPedalChap ahahah yeah. So what would you recommend in addition to my Flamma Drive, Flamma Preamp and Blackstar Dual HT, between: Nux Horseman OD (Klone clone), Plexi2 and Tone City Sweet Cream?
I always recommend the joyo amp sims like the American sound, or the Mosky klon. You could do with some fuzz too 😉
@@BudgetPedalChap I have the EHX Bass Fuzz, for my bass obviously but it works well for guitar too. You think the Mosky is better than the Nux? What I liked in it is that it included both gold and silver settings...
And Joyo in place of the Plexy?
The joyo amp sim range have Fender, Marshall, Orange, Vox and Mesa versions so you've got a lot to choose from. They are good as a back up for an amp going direct in. The Mosky klon does sound better to my ear but you're probably alright with the nux as they aren't that different. Feel free to have a browse of all the videos on my channel and I'll happily answer questions about any of them 👍
Considering both cheap, get both
That's the best option by far 👍
Sweet Baby = Sweet 😊
Absolutely 👍
Dang, how is the sweet baby so good?
It's taking on the big boy for sure, the SD1 ain't no slouch, but damn ...
the the joyo sweet baby a clone of the sd1? are there any other sd1 clones?
It's not, it's a clone of the mad professor sweet honey. They are both mid focused low to mid gain drive pedals though, which is why I'm doing a Vs 👍
