Let's talk about lumbar disc pain. In your discs that are in between your vertebrae, there are a few different parts. The center part is called the nucleus pulposus. Then, there are rings around the center called the annulus fibrosus. On the top and the bottom of the disc, you have vertebral endplates that connect the disc to the vertebra.
The center part of the disc is composed of 65% proteoglycans and 15% collagen. But, the outer part of the disk is composed of about 20% proteoglycans and 70% collagen. Proteoglycans are basically a mixture of protein and carbohydrate.
One big reason why the center part of the disk needs to be mainly carbohydrate is to retain fluid and remain gel-like. The outer part of the discs is mostly protein because it doesn't need to have as much water. It just needs to be strong to protect the gel center.
The outer rings are very strong. But, when you have a herniation, the gel center part starts to leak out and break through the next part of the disc. It's possible to have a small herniation within the disc that doesn't extend and touch the nerve root at all.
When the gel breaks through to the next layer, it can eventually degrade and become inflammatory and more acidic. This can lead to pain. But, the pain is occurring within the disc itself. Usually, it will heal, but sometimes it won't. I think most of these disc problems originate from a mechanical problem or initial injury and get worse from eating inflammatory foods.
People with type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome are at risk for disc herniation. Also, chronic hyperglycemia is associated with an increased risk of disc herniation.
Potential remedies for lumbar disc pain:
1. Eliminate inflammatory foods (sugar, refined carbs, and omega-6 fatty acids like vegetable oil)
2. Do regular intermittent fasting and periodic prolonged fasting
3. Consume omega-3 fatty acids
4. Take vitamin D3 (20,000 IUs) and magnesium

I AM NOT CRAZY! I’ve been telling people for a long time that since I’ve cleaned up my diet that my back pain went away. Now I can shove this video up their internet! Thank you again for the righteous information Dr. B! I love the constant flow of content. It is so important for us laypeople. Keep up the good work!
Can you list down what foods you ate? My dad has sciatica n idk what to do
Now you can shove this video up thier internet. 😂
I'm glad that your back pain is reduced.
Same here..,I can testify

Very true.
I was told years ago that I had disc degradation on my L4 and L5. Years of debilitating back pain. Even went to back surgeon who thankfully just sent me for PT. Then I switched to Keto then Carnivore and I haven’t had back pain in 22 months. None. Totally gone.
I have degenerated and herniated L4-L5 disc for 11 years now (no surgery, I chose to manage it), which restricts some physical activities and causes frequent pains and spasms that sometimes last for multiple days. Since I started keto & fasting 5 months ago, I have much less frequent pains/spasms and they go away on the same day. Noticeable difference so far for me.
I've had 2 surgeries L4- L 5 and 1 surgery C 5-6, now degenerative back disease, arthritis on the spine and now my extremities. The pain is crippling, I've had days I just wanted to honestly die
Mine is L4-L5 too. Since 2012. Pain reliever was always what I was given. This coming Aug 12 is gonna be my 1st therapy, finally, at least. Hmmph
What's your typical meal on carnivore?

Thank you Dr Berg!!

Back issues since cracking my tailbone as a teenager. First time in 40 years my back/hip actually feels “normal”. In the last 4 months have done IF, keto, consistent bed strengthening & stretching and walking 8,000 steps a day. Cod liver oil, d3, multi vitamin and lots of parsley & nutritional yeast & healthy fats. No processed foods, grains & no dairy. Lost 40# in 6 months and have normalized BP off meds.
I healed my excruciating herniated l-5, S-1 pain with B-12, B-6, B-1, & B-2, magnesium glycinate, and fish oil with the keto diet. I also take D-3, but believed the B vitamins were most essential to healing my nerve pain.
Oh Thank you so much.. Im close to tears everyday with my back....
How many weeks or months did this take?
Sir can you tell me What is the name of B vitamin you have taken
Thank you
Which B vitamin did you take?
No you didn’t
I’m your biggest fan Dr. Berg. You’ve given my life back, I feel like I’m 18 again! (53)
I have herniated lumbar disks. None of the doctors who "treated" me made any effort to let me know what I could do other than take opioid pain relievers. They worked for pain but turned into a nightmare all their own. Since beginning Keto I've notice significant pain improvement without pain medication. Thanks for your valuable information. Things are getting better.
Me, too. Since I have been on Keto for the past 3 years now, I have minimal back pain. Before that doctors just want to medicate. Feel so much better now.
So happy you are feeling relief! Opiates are the devil 🥺

I just miss the words to thank you for your work and love to all humanity.
Can you please explain where is this point exactly? The opositive side of the disc? 10cm under bottom?

Thanks a lot Dr.Berg for this video. My mom have all these problems along with osteophytes and bone spurs. So, hoping you will do another video adding these...👍🏼
I have been watching his videos since last week and I am so happy that I found him. Absolutely informative and he is a kind person sharing this knowledge to public. I learned a lot about right diet and my lower back issues.
Amazing.....this video appears just as I'm fed up....yet again from lower back pain, many thanks Doc, and for all the many other random people you have helped 🤘
Been disabled a long time and I've been intuitively figuring this out. Thank you for the confirmation.
I'm getting healthier, understanding how my diet has contributed to back pain. I will be implementing what you taught us today. Thanks, so 😘 much.
I always love watching your videos...
It's so helpful.
I appreciate his efforts in explaining... this man makes science so easy to understand for every common mind... lot useful
With luck doing what you have suggested will speed the recovery on a very recent 'mishap.' I've just started Keto and seeing this video has really convinced me to keep at it, despite the fact that doing much more than gentle walking around the very small garden and carefully up and down the stairs is the limit of my exercising at the moment. Thanks Dr Berg.
This came at the right time. I had a slight lower back pain after I carried my 70 pound daughter on my back for a couple of minutes. I didn’t take it seriously. But later now after 6 months my pain is now slightly high. Goes away if I go for a walk. But even if a carry the grocery stuff my back hurts.
All around you’ve helped me just live a better healthy life overall over the last 4 years
Your Videos are the ONLY ones I watch for help with medical issues. You explain everything so well that even I can understand it.
Thanks for believing in me. Hope my videos are helping you.
Unbelievable! I have just received an email from a friend telling me she has just had an MRI on her back re disc problems. Apparently she has had two operations already (one being a fusion) - she is anxious about having a third. I am sending her this video Right Now - then she has a choice! Well Done Dr Eric - Good Timing as Always!
I just want to thank you for your help with my sugar, with keto I'm running 110 now,I was so sick, sugar was 500 for a long time,I never took meds, all natural, thanks again. Peace
Ah! Sugar! That explains a lot! I've noticed over the past several years that certain foods aggrivate my back, hips, and joints. Thanks for the clarification, doc! This is a big help! 😀👍
Thank You Dr. Eric Berg for enriching us with valuable education
Wow this is so fascinating! I injured my back in Dec 21 and it has basically had me immobilized for better part of 21, now it is getting better however it still is giving me fits. I will do exactly this. I started taking the D3 @ 30,000 Iu about 2 weeks ago but ran out so getting back on that. In another vid you talked about tdoing this and it makes a huge difference. Thank you so much!!
Timely! Have now fasted 2 days every other week 5 times since May. As a result, have dropped 15 of the 30 pounds that I think will help reduce strain on the lower back. Will up D3 from 5,000 IU to 20,000, thank you for that recommendation. Have heard that arthritis can start to put growing layers on the ends of the lumbar vertebrae, causing the discs to bulge. Any recommendations for that? Thanks in advance, really like your use of the white board to lay things out.
Lots of Love ❤️❤️❤️❤️ to you doc! Your diligence is precious!!
🙌🙏THANK YOU!! This is exactly what I have been looking for!!💕
I'm happy to help. Thanks for watching.

I watch your videos regularly and follow your guidance, which are helping me alot in everyday decision making for healthy lifestyle, you are my everyday friend for a while now.
I am pretty sure my Lumbar pain, like you, comes from overexertion in my youth and middle age. I started about 2 months ago with a regiment of stretching and taking 40,000 IU's of D-3 and 800 mgs of magnesium. I have been able to reduce the pain but every once in awhile I get a sharp pain if I twist my lower back too quickly. Talk about going down on a knee !! I am still working on removing all the sugar from my diet. That's the tough part.😉😉 Love your videos. I have been a subscriber for some months now and am addicted . Look forward to your videos. I just turned 70 years young and have started hobby farming. got tired of gardening. 👨🌾👨🌾👨🌾 I find wearing a back brace while operating the equipment helps.
Can't give up your sweet tooth? Try searching for Keto sweets, they are made with Erythritol or Monkfruit. and your body does not process those. Should help keep you low carb but not giving up anything.
Being a taxi driver for over 20 years I developed weight gain and terrible back pain. Many years ago I developed psiatica and numbing in mynleft leg whenever I sat down in the car for over 10 minutes. For many years I have been sitting on a plastic role covered with rubber spikes which I rap in a towel. I also have a small pillow that I fold and put it on my back to create curvature. Funny thing a few years ago I worked in a kitchen for 5 months and I lost weight and was standing all day and all the back pain disappeared. My back pain now is still there but is manigable as long as i sit on the the spike roll, which I keep adjusting throughout my shift. I can't believe you squatted 200 kilos. You were a real beast. My best was 100 kilos for 20 good reps in my early thirties. I'm 47 now. Keep up the great content Dr Berg. You are doing God's work.

By the way, we need to add up this to the list :
5: back/abs strength training
So important to have strong lower back muscles and abs, collectively it's called Core Muscles.
I feel better when I strengthen them, I can squat and deadlift easily without any injury, i feel like the muscles around the backbones keep the stuff intact. Don't forget the glutes muscles as well, it's all connected with lower back.
Yes!! ... Glad you mentioned this. I've noticed much less pain when my abs are tighter.
What would you do for the QLs? I have a bit of pain on left side in this area.
back mechanic by dr stuart mcgill
It's not always all about the disks. It can also be because of weak muscles next to the spine , vertebrae, the pelvis and but muscles. I know what I'm talking about because I currently have a fractured vertebrae in the lumbar area for the past 12 year .
So glad I saw this video. I will take Vit D3 as you stated for inflammation related to herniated disc's low back.
very comprehensive and useful thank you i will apply
I’ve had more epidural injections than I can count, had back issues for years, had one doctor the first time I saw him want to do back surgery and I said NO not unless It’s the last resort, and on pain meds for years very addicting only makes the situation worse because you’re masking your pain and doing things that if you weren’t covering the pain with the pills you couldn’t do what you were doing so you injure yourself more! Hope that makes sense. Dr Berg I thank you for being so sweet and honest to give information so freely. You truly care about people. I no longer take opioids. Praise God!!!!
You have helped me so much.
I am so grateful you share your knowlegde.

Omg. I lifted and twisted a mop bucket when I was 19. Im 33 now. Since going on keto a year ago I've noticed cheating triggers my back to flare up. I've never had it diagnosed and this is the BEST description I've heard about what could be happening and why.
I recently ate a couple sushi thinking, the rice won't bug me too much. Total flare up. Last year I was in bed for 2 weeks after attempting some glorious twice cooked eggy rice. Also got a cystic pimple. Those have gone away since keto.
So interesting!
Omg i have severe lombar back pain after eating sushi😮😮 do you think was the rice?😮😮

It's amazing, based on your information and education, i am happy to conclude, that give your body the good organic foods it needs and ,the body will look after you.
Thank you do much for the medical advice. I will try your advice on how to relieve back pain. Take care and God bless.
I've worked many physical labor jobs. Including working for a moving company. I was very fortunate to never get hurt, except twice I had lower back pain for a few weeks from lifting an awkward/heavy table, and from lifting insanely heavy gym equipment....But my lower back hurt a good amount. Was bothering me a lot of the day, for a few weeks. And you know what I did that fixed it? I took off my shirt when I was exercising in the sun. And it completely went away that day. Both times. The sun is really a magical energy source if you use it correctly.....But, for anybody out there with some slight lower back pain, I would highly highly recommend exercising in the sun/heat with your shirt off. Exercising and sweating, so your body is absorbing the sun's energy(vitamin D). Do not let your skin burn in the sun. That's not healthy
Im 50yrs old.. Been following Dr. Berg doing Keto an IR for last 6 months. Have lost 50lbs. Haven't had any body aches in months. I have felt great these past months. The best I've felt in years. This is the first weekend I've broke Keto, ate out a couple times. Ate terribly. Lots of carbs. Today my back is hurting and I am so stiff. I'm going to start a fast now to get back into Keto because it truly is the answer to being healthy.
