Let's talk about lumbar disc pain. In your discs that are in between your vertebrae, there are a few different parts. The center part is called the nucleus pulposus. Then, there are rings around the center called the annulus fibrosus. On the top and the bottom of the disc, you have vertebral endplates that connect the disc to the vertebra.
The center part of the disc is composed of 65% proteoglycans and 15% collagen. But, the outer part of the disk is composed of about 20% proteoglycans and 70% collagen. Proteoglycans are basically a mixture of protein and carbohydrate.
One big reason why the center part of the disk needs to be mainly carbohydrate is to retain fluid and remain gel-like. The outer part of the discs is mostly protein because it doesn't need to have as much water. It just needs to be strong to protect the gel center.
The outer rings are very strong. But, when you have a herniation, the gel center part starts to leak out and break through the next part of the disc. It's possible to have a small herniation within the disc that doesn't extend and touch the nerve root at all.
When the gel breaks through to the next layer, it can eventually degrade and become inflammatory and more acidic. This can lead to pain. But, the pain is occurring within the disc itself. Usually, it will heal, but sometimes it won't. I think most of these disc problems originate from a mechanical problem or initial injury and get worse from eating inflammatory foods.
People with type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome are at risk for disc herniation. Also, chronic hyperglycemia is associated with an increased risk of disc herniation.
Potential remedies for lumbar disc pain:
    1. Eliminate inflammatory foods (sugar, refined carbs, and omega-6 fatty acids like vegetable oil)
    2. Do regular intermittent fasting and periodic prolonged fasting
    3. Consume omega-3 fatty acids
    4. Take vitamin D3 (20,000 IUs) and magnesium

I was told years ago that I had disc degradation on my L4 and L5. Years of debilitating back pain. Even went to back surgeon who thankfully just sent me for PT. Then I switched to Keto then Carnivore and I haven’t had back pain in 22 months. None. Totally gone.

I have degenerated and herniated L4-L5 disc for 11 years now (no surgery, I chose to manage it), which restricts some physical activities and causes frequent pains and spasms that sometimes last for multiple days. Since I started keto & fasting 5 months ago, I have much less frequent pains/spasms and they go away on the same day. Noticeable difference so far for me.

Will up D3 from 5,000 IU to 20,000, thank you for that recommendation. Have heard that arthritis can start to put growing layers on the ends of the lumbar vertebrae, causing the discs to bulge. Any recommendations for that? Thanks in advance, really like your use of the white board to lay things out.

I had 3 bulged discs in the lower back that would never heal..I've had back pain for 18 months and was told nothing could be done except physio..I thought I was going to have to live with it for the rest of my life..Physio did nothing except drain my wallet and most days I couldn't lift my leg up to put my socks on..I would have to sit down to put my shoes on...For some unknown reason I thought 1 day that I should be taking vitamin d because I'm never in the sun..So i started taking 10,000ius of vitamin d 5 days a week with 180mcs of k2..6 weeks later my back pain is completely gone..not 1 trace of it..I've lived in pain for the last 18 months and all I needed was vit d

Omg. I lifted and twisted a mop bucket when I was 19. Im 33 now. Since going on keto a year ago I've noticed cheating triggers my back to flare up. I've never had it diagnosed and this is the BEST description I've heard about what could be happening and why.
I recently ate a couple sushi thinking, the rice won't bug me too much. Total flare up. Last year I was in bed for 2 weeks after attempting some glorious twice cooked eggy rice. Also got a cystic pimple. Those have gone away since keto.
    So interesting!

I've worked many physical labor jobs. Including working for a moving company. I was very fortunate to never get hurt, except twice I had lower back pain for a few weeks from lifting an awkward/heavy table, and from lifting insanely heavy gym equipment....But my lower back hurt a good amount. Was bothering me a lot of the day, for a few weeks. And you know what I did that fixed it? I took off my shirt when I was exercising in the sun. And it completely went away that day. Both times. The sun is really a magical energy source if you use it correctly.....But, for anybody out there with some slight lower back pain, I would highly highly recommend exercising in the sun/heat with your shirt off. Exercising and sweating, so your body is absorbing the sun's energy(vitamin D). Do not let your skin burn in the sun. That's not healthy

Im 50yrs old.. Been following Dr. Berg doing Keto an IR for last 6 months. Have lost 50lbs. Haven't had any body aches in months. I have felt great these past months. The best I've felt in years. This is the first weekend I've broke Keto, ate out a couple times. Ate terribly. Lots of carbs. Today my back is hurting and I am so stiff. I'm going to start a fast now to get back into Keto because it truly is the answer to being healthy.
