    How I Designed this Mask:
During the coronavirus outbreak I started making DIY Face Masks using some of the patterns I found online, but I really didn’t like fit, especially because I was used to my more form-fitting and comfortable masks used for carpentry or demolition. So I designed what I’m calling the “Best Fit Facemask.” It’s more form-fitted onto the face and it has adjustable elastic ties around the ears to fit a wider variety of faces.
As a general contractor and woodworker, I had searched for form-fitting and comfortable masks to protect my lungs from dust and debris. For that reason, I knew there were better options than most of the sewing mask patterns I found. (These are not a replacement for N95 or surgical masks. These masks are designed to add an additional layer of protection.)
    Face Mask Template Sizes:
The medium should fit most people, especially with the adjustable straps. I've included a large template for those who have a longer face or bigger head.
Does this mask have a filter pocket?
Filter Pockets or No Pocket, your choice! Instructions for sewing a mask with or without a filter pocket are included. In fact, it's only one step difference.
In addition to this pattern being easier to sew, it also uses less fabric to allow you to make more masks with the fabric you have on hand. Speaking of fabric, these are some sources for fabric in your home so you don't have to buy anything!
(I've included affiliate links for your convenience. I earn a small percentage from a purchase using these links. There is no additional cost to you. You can read more about affiliate links here.)
    Materials:
Fabric (see below for suggestions) or order online: amzn.to/3dZqMnt
Scissors: (good sewing scissors speed along the process.) amzn.to/2V9ZuSC
    Thread: amzn.to/3bY39dc
    Iron: amzn.to/3e2va5d
Elastic Strap material (see below for ideas)
Favorite Nose clip materials: amzn.to/2Ca3U6C or bit.ly/2ABs6xOCraft bead (or buttons): amzn.to/3dWQ8lQ
    Sewing Machine: amzn.to/2x8j2ij
    Better Face Mask Fabric Materials:
There is some science behind the materials used for face masks. Although the tighter woven (more thread count) fabrics offer more protection, they do pose the issue of being harder to breathe through. If you want to choose the best materials for both, here is a list of best materials for making your DIY face mask when trying to prevent virus transmission.
Sources for Mask Materials in Your Home:
    Quilter's Cotton Fabric
    Cotton Blend Fabric
    Sheets or Pillowcases
    Tea Towels (not terrycloth)
    Fabric Napkins
    Scarfs or Bandanas
    Flannel
    Dress Shirts
    Other Cotton Fabrics
    Nose Clip Materials:
    Coffee Bag Tie
If you don't have a coffee bag tie:
    • Electrical tape and 18 gauge wire (or straightened paper clips) make a similar functioning nose clip.
Simply cut a piece of electrical tape 3 inches long. Lay two 2.5" pieces of wire onto half the tape and fold over the other half to seal the wire inside the tape. Trim off the ends, leaving a small amount of tape to cover the wires.
    Adjustable Strap Materials:
    • 1/8" round shock or paracord (cut two 12 inch lengths per mask): amzn.to/2V2B3GM
    • 1" cut strips of t-shirt material (cut 6-8 inch lengths and stretch to 12 inches long)
Full head & neck strap material option:
    5/8" foldover elastic: amzn.to/2DKjarr and bit.ly/32hmxjN
The key to the Best Fit Face Mask fitting so well is the adjustable straps. Using a craft bead on the straps allows the user to adjust the mask to their face. The paracord is the hardest to thread, but I used pointed tweezers to poke the straps through. The t-shirt material and flat ribbon elastic is much easier to thread through.
No matter what material you use for the straps, be sure to tie the ends of your straps to prevent the bead from coming off.
If you don’t have craft beads, a button with some craft twine can work well as a strap adjuster.

I've made dozens and dozens of masks in the past month. Tried several different patterns. This one has been the best and most universally a good fit for all. Thank you for taking the time to make this video, for caring enough about others to put countless hours into responding to comments, and for a kind heart that puts up with comments from some people who are not being nice. Ignore them and know that the vast majority of us are very, very grateful and appreciative!

I’m not good at sewing, do not own a sewing machine, but I was still able to make one. I love the fit, the adjustable ear strings, the nose adjusting metal. I used materials that I had at home, used needle and thread! Thanks, great tutorial! First one was a fail, but second one, I’m very proud of myself!

This was the 8th mask pattern I tried - and while it does take slightly longer than the pleated ones, it's absolutely doable and the masks are SO MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE!! Thank you for this - I'm making these as fast as I can.
NOTE: If you have deep-set eyes (a lot of folks of middle eastern/north african descent), this is a great mask. It was the only one I can wear without fogging up my glasses.

    • What size are the craft beads I used? the hole on my beads is 4mm.
    • If I don't have a bead, what can I use? Use a button and feed the twine through the holes then tie them around your ear straps tight enough to hold the strap, but loose enough to be able to move the button. Or tie a slip knot (shown in my Time Saver Video here: czcams.com/video/DPrKpm507EU/video.html)
    • Can I skip the liner if using a filter pocket? At your own risk. I like to have two layers of fabric between me and the world. The filter pocket doesn't extend all the way to the sides of the mask.
    • What filter material should I use? Do your own research. Here's a good article on options for filters: www.huffpost.com/entry/best-materials-diy-face-masks-filters_l_5e8ce4c6c5b6e1a2e0fb4ada
    • What material did you use for the liner? I used sheet material and a cotton curtain.
    • Don't have a particular material for this mask? I listed a variety of alternative materials here: www.prettyhandygirl.com/best-fit-facemask/ but, feel free to use what you have on hand.
    • Are these washable? Absolutely. I've washed mine many times. I do recommend using a medium heat when drying.
    • Is there a small or child size template? YES! Please visit my site for all the size templates: Child, Small, Medium, Large, and X-Large.
    • Can't thread your straps through the bead? Try using fishing line folded in half and feed through the bead loop first. Put strap material through the fishing line loop and pull it back through the bead. You can see a video of this process in my Time Saver video: czcams.com/video/DPrKpm507EU/video.html
    • Video too fast? Don't like the music? Keep your thoughts to yourself and download the instructions here: www.prettyhandygirl.com/best-fit-facemask/ (No music and you can read it at your own pace.)

I adjusted my process by sewing the straight edge and corners in one go before cutting out the entire piece from the fabric. I was able to speed up my entire process by doing batch sketching onto a bolt of fabric, then batch stitching, cutting and ironing. I then assemble all three layers (I'm doing ones with pocket) before ironing the folded edges, pinning them with clips as I go before sewing in place.
I'm new to sewing and just got a digital machine but my college roommates have been awesome in being my guinea pigs to figure it all out. One works at a grocery store and received so many compliments on the mask design. Thank you for making this tutorial!

@@crossed_threads , you know the straight edge in front and the two cuts for the nose and chin? I sew that only and then cut the whole thing out of the fabric. I do that in one go rather than one long edge, then sewing the nose and chin edges separately. Maybe I should post pics somewhere of how I do it because it's tricky to just explain.

Hi Brittany. Being a sister in carpentry, I have an idea for you for the nose piece that I found to work wonderfully. I had a roll of exterior flashing and I decided to try it out as the nose piece in masks that I made. I cut strips out of the metal with a scissor, curved the ends, and did a quick sand of the edges. Then I doubled the strips for more strength and sewed a small pocket for them in the nose area of the mask. Since they are an exterior product, they are corrosion-proof, which makes the mask washable even with the metal strips sewn in. If someone didn't want to wash the mask withe the strips in, they can sew the small pocket for the strips on the inside of the mask, only sewing three sides and they can simply slip the strips out to wash/dry.

I do a couple of step-saving "cheats" during sewing but have not altered the pattern at all. I use a tightly woven cotton sateen sheet, washed and ironed, and cut two of those for my liner and pocket for a filter and an outer layer of batik fabric for a total of 3 finished layers before inserting any filter. Going to try a "no pocket" version using interfacing and see how that washes and holds out. Thank you very much for the time and thought. Stay home and stay safe everyone. I also like the adjustable ear 'straps.' And I also like the speed of the video, no faffing, my sort of video. Some people talk too much and show every single stitch on the machine. I may use your pattern if I make some more. I'm still trying to decide on how to do the elastic as I've seen that elastic round the ears sometimes gives people sore ears but I feel sure making them adjustable would overcome that. Thank you.

Anne Evans - I use around 22” of thin elastic (1/8” wide), and thread it through the side channels in a continuous piece. Then I tie it together, and bury the knot inside one of the channels. Works great for around the head rather than giving yourself sore ears.

I have made a few masks, and instead of having them around the ear (personally, I have sensitive skin AND wear glasses) I used 4 feet of cord (paracord type), melted the ends (so it won't fray). Then when sewing, placed the cord like a U on the mask. So you have a loop that will go behind your neck and then can tie it above your head. Less irritation for the ears (especially if you wear glasses!) Hope that helps!

After struggling to get the paracord through a craft bead, I finally found an easy way that works for me. And
FAST! After pulling out the white insides of the paracord to make the cord easier to squish, I took an elastic hair holder ( the cheap thin kind) and cut it open into a long string. The hair elastic was thin enough that I can easily push a loop (doubled the elastic into a loop) of it through the bead, insert the paracord into the loop and pull it all through the bead with ease! I'm so happy that I threaded a bunch of them to have on hand for the next batch of masks, I guess I wouldn't have had to cut the elastic, but hindsight is 20/20, and it works. Maybe this will help someone else. Thank you so much, Brittany, for sharing your great ideas!
