      @@WordsinTime _The Lather of Heacen_ didn't quite click with me, but your next in your TBR pile, _The Dispossessed_ is my second or third most favourite by Le Guin. Be sure to also read _Four Ways to Forgiveness_ (or, even better, _Five..._ when the later written fifth novelette _Old Music and the Slave Women_ is included.)
      And if you feel adventurous, try something completely different, _Always Coming Home._

    The Lathe of Heave is a great book. Read it as a pair with The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North. They are both books about one man's ability to change history/reality, but each with a different twist. And in each book the character meets his wife from a previous/different reality and needs to figure out how to respond.

    Finished Inverted World a few days ago. A true masterpiece! It is interesting to see how the city is depicted on different covers. The two covers you showed were more city-like while the NYRB edition I own shows a metallic wheel-like structure.

As a bonus there is a very fine made for television version of this excellent novel that is available for free on CZcams. Haha tough critic!

    • @mormengil
      @mormengil Před 2 měsíci

      @@WordsinTime Yeah, for me a book falling into 5 stars has to be almost perfect. Either I know I just cannot put it down and would rather keep on reading than, I dunno, go to the doctor. OR, a book that leaves a mark on me for a long time after reading it, and I just keep thinking about it.
      A good example of the former was Project Hail Mary, a good example of the latter was Roadside Picnic.
      To be fair, xenogenesis did both of those things to a degree, but it did have some very minor issues that kept me from awarding a perfect score.
      The way I tend to think about this also usually means that the longer a book is, the harder it is for me to give it a perfect score.

    Have had Dangerous Visions for decades (reading the Bloch entry first; I was a horror fan at the time), but only forced myself to read every story in order just last year. Some still hold up very well, some have gotten even more scandalous, and others have turned to complete snoozeville (PJ Farmer's "Riders" may have won the Hugo in the late-1960s. but its "cleverness" now makes it extremely cringeworthy, IMHO). I don't think it's a particularly good story, but I LOVE Norman Spinrad's Carcinoma Angels--it's awful but awesome....
    Lathe of Heaven rules! Of the three LeGuin you mention, Lathe is the one I've reread several times, Dispossessed is the one I think is great (because the situation could be applicable on Earth--Unlike Left Hand which is often totally alien, and bogged down a little in worldbuilding for me.
    Inverted World is on my shelf TBR.
    Dawn--whew! This book is the epitome of body horror. Watch a bunch of Cronenberg to prep! For me, a horror novel--but certainly a great one.
    BTW, "Arena" became that classic Kirk vs. Gorn episode of Star Trek (w/same title)--and I think some of that episode was filmed near Joshua Tree (T-shirt reference).
    Enjoy your reads, and thanks!
