How to retrofit a 7.3 idi glow plug controller in a 6.9 idi, a much more reliable glow plug system.

  • As many of you know, my 1985 F250 has been an ether baby ever since I purchased the truck, it's been getting glow plugs in a can multiple times a day for the last 4 years, when I started uploading short videos most mornings I would start the day with a cold start on the old truck with ether, well well, a lot of fellas seem to be convinced that once you start using ether your diesel engine is now "addicted" to it and will never start without it, I've had enough people commenting that so I figure what better way to prove them wrong than to retrofit a 7.3 idi glow plug controller into the old 6.9 idi, proving that even though ether was used with this engine, the engine is not addicted to the substance.
    The 7.3 glow plug controller is a much more reliable system than that of the 6.9, fails less, and won't burn out your plugs when it stops working.
    In this video I go in depth and build a custom harness for the glow plugs, change the plugs themselves, as well as instal the glow plug controller.

    One thing to note about using the old glow plug harness with the 7.3 controller. The solid state controller measures resistance from heat in the glow plugs to determine whether they get power or not. The old harnesses even on the 7.3’s have many splices that are usually corroded and in bad shape. This will make the controller think the glow plugs are hot when in reality it is just seeing the resistance of the bad harness and won’t give the glow plugs power. I recommend either installing a new harness (which aren’t cheap) or making a new harness completely replacing the old garbage that will most likely cause hard start headaches. Great conversion! Have a good day!

    I wired a hot wire from a momentary switch to the trigger post piggybacked over the controller trigger wire to jump the GP relay on the 6.9 I had, that’s how all the 6.5 GMC’s at work were set up and it worked great as long as you knew what you were doing (as in don’t hold the button so long the tips on the glow-plugs swell up like a balloon). I just used mine to give it a little “extra burn” time on the new ZD-9’s I put in it. One nice thing was doing it that way allowed the original controller to still function when I wasn’t overriding it. the “wait to start” light would even come on when I hit the button (as you’d expect, idk why I thought that was so cool).

    Always loved the sound of those trucks firing up! I know they're under powered compared to today's diesels but they're sure easy and cheap to work on by the same comparison. At the end of they day, I love my 6.9.
    Thanks for the information. I'm going to attempt to simply replace my glow plug controller. I've heard horror stories of replacements failing after 6 months but mine has been in since at least 1994, when my IDI came into the family. It may be factory original from '85 and it's just now failing. Maybe they don't make the replacements as good as the originals? If that doesn't work long term I'll go to the retrofit.

      Oh yes, it’s actually closer to the exhaust manifold than the factory location so if anything it will cycle the plugs off quicker than the intake location,and is a very similar location to what the turbo idis used.

      The controller relies on engine heat to know if it should kick the plugs on, so he was trying to get it as close to where the 7.3 has it which is behind the air intake in the middle of the engine. Dont know if it would get enough heat to register properly mounted where original was. I thought about doing the same thing.

    • @highostablegarage
      @highostablegarage  Před rokem +1

      You most likely could use one as long as it can handle the current, but the 7.3 GP controller where it shines is the little solid state computer on it, makes it so as long as the computer is working and your engine is healthy, the glow plugs shouldn't ever get overloaded and burnt. I appreciate it, glad it might of helped!
