- Alonso and Christy sink their teeth into "El Conde," a darkly comic satire which imagines what might have happened if former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet secretly had been an actual vampire. The film comes from director Pablo Larraín ("Jackie," "Spencer"), who co-wrote the script with Guillermo Calderón. Starring Jaime Vadell, Alfredo Castro and Paula Luchsinger. In theaters now and streaming on Netflix starting Sept. 15.

Chilean here, Pablo is one of our best directors working today, I'm so happy for all the success he's had, especially in Hollywood. I highly recommend his Chileans films like No, Tony Manero, The Club and Ema, they're incredible.
Can't wait to watch this. The trailer has an incredible cast as well, they're all very respected Chilean actors.
That's awesome -- please come back after you've seen the film and let us know what you think!
I watched it tonight and it's exactly what I wanted. Very very impressed and I want a rewatch soon. I've had The Club on my list for awhile, a recommendation from Darren Aronofsky, and will definitely get to that one soon.
It blows my mind that Christy correctly raved about the cinematography but without giving the brilliant and hilarious script its due! It was AT LEAST equal to Lachman's cinematography. Together, the two aspects knocked it out of the park - and I rarely say that about a movie - without diluting the historical significance of the real horrors of Pinochet's regime. 5 out of 5. 10 out of 10. For what it's worth. 😊
As a Chilean, I'm thrilled when any of our filmmakers get any attention around the world!
Great! What are your thoughts on El Conde?
Still haven't seen it, it won't be released in cinemas here, from the looks of it. Stuck waiting for the Netflix release like the rest of the world.@@BreakfastAllDay
Alonso with the Albert Brooks reference!!!
Not enough is said about cinematography in the mainstream but it really can uplift a movie to the next level. I recently watched "Men" and I think that is great example.
It's one of our favorite topics around here!
I thought 7.2 right before she said it. I’ve been watching you guys for so long, lol. Keep doing what you’re doing!
Ha, we've gotten too predictable.
Can't wait. I've seen all of Larrain's films, with the exception of Fuga and Ema, and I think he's one of the most consistent directors working today. My favorite may The Club, which is about different kinds of vampires.
Inspiring, comprehensive review! You guys rock!
Thanks so much! What did you think of the film?
I enjoyed both Larraín’s (pronounced “la-rye-een”) biopics, Jackie and Spencer. It’ll be interesting to see what he does with his next biopic with Angelina Jolie playing Maria Callas.
Good to know, thanks! Yes, there is an accent there (and we both speak Spanish, duh 😄).
You always look so happy and fresh. Glad for you. You make my morning. Coffee anyone. Lol.
Ha, thanks Steve! Good morning all day.
It sounds like cinematographer Ed Lachman is Christy's new boyfriend. 😉
Would never cheat on Roger Deakins!
Thanks Christy & Alonso, I will subscribe 10 times :)
Aww, so sweet.
I wonder if y'all are going to review Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. It was surprisingly gorgeously shot and melancholic.
I was wondering if you'd have to do a Spoilers version of this to discuss the reveal!
Saw it yesterday. Lots of little chuckles throughout.
That was an inspired reveal. Did you realize who that was beforehand?
A SUPERB film! 8.5, at least, for me.
Great film!!
I love Christy's enthusiasm and energy. She so obviously seems to enjoy what she's doing. She seems even more engaged than she was in the What the Flick? days.
Thank you so much, very sweet of you.
Very excited for this. I thought Spencer was pretty terrific and this premise is pretty genius.
You'll have to check it out!
I loved this film. Just watched on Netflix and really wish I’d seen it at the cinema. I’m with Alonso on this, and feel the repetition of the hearts and feedings and cetera serve to reinforce Pinochet’s violence as both savage and routine; clockwork brutality driven by unnatural urges. The nun was v Joan D’Arc and yes reminiscent of PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC ; black and white cinematography wondrous and compelling 🦉
Isn't it just incredibly beautiful? Glad you watched it too!
This sounds really interesting!
It is! Out on Netflix tomorrow, you'll have to check it out.
Maybe I'm missing True Blood, but you've talked me into it. I will let you know.😊
Please do!
I think I'm more with Christy on this one, really dazzling but overall a little emotionally distant. Did you all catch Larrain's Ema? Completely different type of story but just as visually stunning. Also don't want to spoil it but the narrator was the best screen portrayal of that figure I've ever seen
That was an inspired move.
Not-so-fun fact: Larrain's direct family has strong ties with the pinochet regime. His mother and father are extremely conservative politicians
Ah, interesting.
the last name should be pronounced "la-ra-EEN", not "la-RAIN". just an fyi. i love your reviews!
Did any of you watch it in a cinema? I'm asking since one of you was in Venice. I saw it there and didn't care for the look. I was even thinking that it might work better on a small screen.
Alonso saw it at Venice. I saw it at home on Netflix- Christy
@@BreakfastAllDay Thanks for answering.
@@sandorx4it doesn't work on small screen either
The Chicago Boys. Who's the Airhead?
The cómic is best😂
For some reason I thought Alonso would hate this film.
We are full of surprises around here.
Of course, September 11 is the anniversary of Pinochet's takeover.
Wonder if anyone will ever make a serious, Oscar baity movie about Chile & Pinochet that deals with how his Chicago Boys economists created the best economy in Latin America, plus honestly confront whatever human rights violations he committed.
The economy part is mostly a myth, now the human right abuses were astronomical
@donoso1312 Don't think links are allowed in YT comments.
A simple google search will provide articles about Chile's above average economy for its neighborhood.
@@RykComerford ive lived that economy first hand
Sure, they can make a movie with economists where they are also vampires, owners of mining companies, insurance companies and so many others.
@Egarrido Someone can also make a movie where Fidel Castro & Che Guevara are vampires, which would make sense.
But Hollywood's biases being what they are, we get a white washed Motorcycle Diaries. Didn't see it, but skeptical Guevara's documented racism against blacks made it in the movie. Or that he would be a helpful henchman to Castro regarding putting gays in Cuban concentration camps.
