I retired from the Army in 2014, now live in San Antonio, Tx. Watching this video took me back and felt sad for my people. It's long overdue for them to seek a higher standard of living. As long as we destroy each other, its giving white America exactly what they want. Soon all we know as things are, will be systematically erased from time. As for me, my life is better. 3 grown kids, 8 grands, Wife of 22 years. I will represent the best of Brooklyn Bed Sty always no matter where I live, or travel to!!!

Well I'm from the original (Do or Die) Bed-Stuy era's 1960s-1970s. Born in the late 1950s in Brooklyn. When Bed-Stuy earned that (Do or Die) Moniker for real. Before a Jay Z, Biggie Smalls and any other Rap artist, who say they are from The Stuy. For the most part. They weren't even born yet. Especially when Marcy Projects, belonged to The "Outlaws LTD" The streets were mean. But the residents were still like "it takes a village/community" minded, to raise a child. Where's this brother at in "The Stuy" now for the interview? Back in my day that was old "113 Hellcats" territory. From Sumner & Fulton to Sumner and maybe Madison or Gates. Heading eastward towards Broadway. And all in between from both points. Reid Ave, especially. In my day. People sold dinners, out of their apartments and had Card games. Barbershop's and Shoe Shine Parlor's, ran the numbers. And had dice games, in the backrooms. Black owned corner stores, were everywhere. Mom and Pop eateries, Bar's, Candy Stores and Social Clubs. The kids/Teens, had After Schoool Centers to go too. Like at 262, 35, 258, 304, 93, PS 3 and even PAL on Gates & Marcy, during the 1960s etc... Whether it was the schools itself or churches. Like the Newman Memorial Methodist Church on Throop & Macon. They had a nice afterschool program there (RIP Ms Nelson). There were plenty of talent show contests. Young people had talent. People were more sociable, back then too. Teenagers, played ball sports in Parks. Basketball and Handball. Younger kids played stoop ball, Chinese Handball aka K.I.N.G, Punch ball, sewer to sewer football, Stick ball and Skelley in the streets. Girls jumping rope, braiding boys hair on the stoop. Bed-Stuy was full of life. It wasn't all hopeless, like people try too say it was. We had PAL/WYNN CENTER, Cadet Corps, Boy & Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts & Brownies. We celebrated Brooklyn Day, with two parades. One starting from Jefferson & Marcy to Jefferson & Stuyvesant. Then on Stuyvesant & Gates, towards Fulton. There were jammin block parties, during summertime. Certain parks, would be jammin too. The majority of people were of Black southern roots. And of course blacks from the Islands were in the mix. But mostly Jamaicans, Trini's, some Hatians, Cubans, Panamanians & Puerto Ricans. And Chinese, who didn't disrespect like Asians, do today. Bed-Stuy wasn't totally segregated black back then. You still had a few whites. Leftover from the 1940s still living there too. But the 1950s, 60s & 70s Bed-Stuy had many street gangs also. Too many for me to name in that 30 year span. But I know the names. I started gangbanging in 1969 to 76. Teenage shit. Bed-Stuy also had "Black Panthers" Chapters, there during the 60s too. Let me tell y'all something. You're not old enough to know the original "Do or Die" era's. If you don't remember when the original "79th Precinct" was on the corner of Gates & Throop. Not Tompkins Ave, were it's located at today. Do you know one of the first Arab stores, to open in Bed-Stuy, was in 1973? Right on the corner of Throop & Hancock. That spot was were The Caravan Bar, use to be. I could go on. Bed-Stuy had its issues and was dangerous at times. But you couldn't be scared too live.
In closing let me say this.
They would've never tried that gentrification nonsense, in the 60s and 70s in Bed-Stuy. Those Hipsters wouldn't been safe. Or made it to the next corner. That's FACTS. Their bikes would've been taken, with them on it. Nonetheless running every damn where. And walking dogs everywhere. Then looking at you. Like you don't belong there today. Robbery and assault statistics, would've been sky high. IJS.
That's the Bed-Stuy I grew up in. Where i was grade schooled and street gangbanging educated in.

No doubt what you're saying. That's the original Do or Die Bed Stuy Brooklyn era's. 1950s, 1960s & 1970s. Those era's is what gave Bed-Stuy it's reputation. Gangbanging streets.
