  • Hi there,
Apologies for the extended absence! I never meant for this hiatus to drag on so long, but it's been a very busy couple of months. I'm happy to be back, but I've had many, MANY issues trying to get this video done and edited.
I actually started this video on my mom's actual birthday, which was last Monday, 20 July. The one I'm finally posting today is my third attempt at filming and there are places I wanted to add more subtitles in, places I wanted to edit out, but I didn't want to risk iMovie turning the entire video to black AGAIN, so just did the bare minimum of subtitling and then I'll do more in a pinned comment below.
I hope you all have been doing well and are making progress in learning Cantonese -- it's never too late and it's always a good time to start!
If you're wanting online lessons with me and Eunice (and Erik), check out www.cantolingo.com. And follow me on IG and FB @cantonesecorner.
And as always, if you like the video, please give it a thumbs up and subscribe if you haven't already. And let me know if you like this kind of format!
    Happy learning,
    Sue Marguerite

PPS. Learn more Cantonese with me and open new windows into Cantonese culture by taking my Traditional Characters in Cantonese Pronunciation courses over at www.cantolingo.com.
Learn traditional Standard Written Chinese characters, their Cantonese equivalent (if any), the radicals, proper stroke order, and much more! Classes are on-going and combine online self-study with Zoom sessions. This is a university-level course based on materials from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and is effective and fun!

Actually it's quite refreshing to hear u speak Cantonese for most of the video...rather than punctuated bits of canto. For me it's the right level to progress my canto 😆

I think it's less common to say 一小時 verbally, unless it's in a more formal context but it is more common to use it in wrriten form.

Nice to meet you!!! Happy Belated 82th Birthday to your lovely Mommy. Wow!!!🎂 She is an Amazing lady! I love Hong Kong and feel in my prayers 🙏 that I need to come back to HK. Everyone is like 😨. 3rd Wave COVID-19 was coming when I fly...
Today is the 28th July - the LAST Day ( Hong Kong time). Last day of our 14-day Quarantine in a Hotel (with my little boy). We are not allowed to leave the Hotel Room until mid-night to complete this 'race', I mean quareteen. ! If you really want to come back to HK, you will need to put up with all these strict restriction. The system is very strict! But we appreciate all these to protect the city. The gov is trying to do their best to protect HK💟 ! We love Hong Kong! BTY, your Cantonese is amazing 🙏!!!! I'm amazed by your native Canto- accent!!! So, if you do want to practice your Cantonese, we can connect and CHAT or ZOOM! I' m an ESL English teacher and it's kind of wired because English is my 2nd language which I teach. I feel we are in the same boat.....
Love your love for Hong Kong!!!💟💕

Hi Jenny! So nice to meet you too, and thanks for the birthday wishes for my mom!! Happy to hear you're done with your quarantine ... I can imagine it's not easy and your little guy must be so happy to be leaving to go home finally! 🎉 That's so cool that you teach English, and yes we are in the same boat in that sense. Would be fun to connect on zoom or when I'm finally back. Let's keep in touch! :)

I can speak English, but I have to admit that Cantonese is more fun, like , it is so slangy and colloquial. maybe my English is not native, I find it kind of boring. but I find the Cantonese pronunciation difficult even though it is my mother tongue. English pronunciation is easier as it just comes out of my mouth when I open it.

I always have an issue when deciding which language i want to study and learn. Japanese, Cantonese, or Mandarin.
Japanese is simplistic, but i hate how all the people trying to learn it are creepy anime incels on the internet.
Mandarin is useful for obvious reasons, for buisness etc, and its widespread use around China.
Then Cantonese, very expressive and sounds great. Also, for cultural reasons, it needs preserving.
On moral ground, id choose Cantonese, but idk what will come of Hong Kong culture. The mainland communist regime seems to want to erase Canto culture

Hi again - so happy to hear from you and love to read your messages in Chinese -- I read them out loud -- good practice for me :) Great birthday video -- simplified characters, though, so guessing it must be a Mainland (Guangzhou?) production? It didn't really look like HK-style teahouse or actors either, but anyway, I love the old videos so it really doesn't matter, I'm just curious! I'll pass on the birthday wishes to my mom, she will be so happy to hear. We're all doing well, and I hope you are too. Until next time, stay happy and healthy!

You're going back to HK? After all that has happened!?

    • @CantoneseCorner
      @CantoneseCorner  Před 3 lety +7

Hi there, Joseph! Well .... that's the $64,000 question. Or like Somewhere in Time ...so happy to be one place, then I find a coin or a picture (or remember dim sum :) and then I'm like "I wanna go back!!!" It's always like that, though ... when I'm here, that doesn't exist; when I'm there, here doesn't exist. Both places have so much to recommend them ... sadly though, HK has less and less ... at least for those of us who have memories of what it was like before. I often think about people who lived there through the 70s and 80s (before my time) and how it was then, and then the handover came along and they probably thought HK was over and then it wasn't ... HK has always had a way of rebounding, so hope it can find its mojo and become something special again. Not sure how, though ... and that's the sad thing -- so much negativity now .... and no one is looking out for HK as HK ... they're just so intent on it becoming just another Chinese city and demoting it to being just a part of the Greater Bay Area (GBA). And to answer your question in a more practical way -- with the new restrictions, I really don't see how I can get back there at the moment -- heard today that a Cathay flight from JFK took off with only 3-4 transit passengers (people transiting in HK and therefore not subject to the same restrictions) because everyone else could not provide sufficient evidence that their covid tests were "official" enough. So they were turned away at the airport!

Hi Tszwah .... it's crazy isn't it?? And my stepfather was born in 1930. Both say they have never seen or experienced the likes of what is going on in today's world, which is saying something considering they lived through WWII, Korean War, Vietnam, and all the rest. With space exploration going past the moon now, it will be crazy to know what the world and the universe will be like in 50 or 100 years.

I wish people would quit thinking that Hong Kong is some kind of war zone. People don't stop going to Paris or Israel when protests occur there. Hong Kong is still a marvelous place. Besides, the officials there wouldn't dare harm a person with a US passport.

@@markmh835 "the officials there wouldn't dare harm a person with a US passport" Haha, funny. The CCP is known for taking foreigners as political hostages, look at what happened when that Huawei manager was arrested. Hong Kong is now under complete CCP control, they even have the legal grounds now to pick up people (even foreigners) transfrerring at the HK airport and deport them to mainland China
