Hi Sue Marguerite, do you know of any resource that will read out loud characters in Cantonese? Google translate only reads back words in Mandarin.

你好我有个问题，为什么香港政府不推广广东话正字，我记得每个粤语字都是有正字的，而不是一些口字旁的字，与字意毫无关系，感觉像是一种拼音。推广正字不是更容易推广广东话教育吗

Thanks! Even though almost everyone pronounces it as "gok", I'll never stop teaching it the correct way so at least people know that once upon a time it was properly said as "gwok". 🤗
I get a kick out of you forbidding the lazy way of saying “Gok” and must properly say “Gwok” ! I will go out on a limp and say more than half hk Cantonese speakers use large amounts of lazy speak.
I'm so glad you enjoy it! 🥰 It's true ... and I'll go even farther and say it's probably closer to like 95-100% use lazy speak in Hong Kong 😂, but as a teacher, I feel it's my responsibility to at least remind students that once upon a time it was said with the "w" as "gwok". It's like I can never see myself writing "léih5" with an "l" for "néih5" (你) ... and am really glad that Cantonese Sheik also writes them properly in the phonetics -- even though hardly anyone says 你 with the "n" sound any more, and it's one of the most-asked questions I get from new learners -- why in the world is it written "neih" if everyone says "leih"! 😆
Personally, I think Cantonese should be called as 白話 instead of calling 粵語. (There was 白話文 revolution in history. ）PS.: 白話VS普通話; 廣州話VS北京話. Think from THE SCOPE COVERED viewpoint.🤔
只有廣州人會叫「白話」，香港人不會叫白話，習慣
@@Avacado721 白話的定義覆蓋範圍係華南！（廣西、福建、海南、湖南、部分越南人都係叫粵語做白話嘅，當時整個華南地區發起了“白話文”運動！）不懂你就查一下歷史吧。我覺得你係東北人吧 🤭 The definition of 白話 is: a language which uses by people from south China, the standard pronunciation of 白話(Cantonese or粵語）is taking HK&Guangzhou spoken tone as the standard. On the other hand, the saying 粵語 is only admitted as south language by Canton & HK people. Because the charter 粵 is a symbol of Canton (Not including 廣西&海南 etc.. But in fact, many people from 廣西&海南 they speak Cantonese. But people from (廣西&海南 etc.) they call Cantonese as 白話 not 粵語.
@@xue7700 Now that you bring it up, I have heard "baahk6 yuh5" 白話 before! How interesting the different ways of naming or calling the language. It's kind of like when I first learned that "Chinatown" isn't called what I thought it would be called. I thought it would literally be called "Jūng1 gwok3 sìhng4" 中國城 and was confused why it was called "Tòhng4 yahn4 gāai1" 唐人街 until I learned that another way to call Chinese people was 唐人 , and then of course 街 is street. Then there is the 華 character which is yet another way to call Chinese people -- 華人 wàh4 yàhn4 -- or refer to China -- 中華 jūng1 wàh4 -- or overseas Chinese -- 華僑 wàh4 kìuh4 -- and I don't really know the history behind all of these and why, for example, Chinatown isn't called 華人街, but I would love to learn!

@@xue7700 Thank you for mentioning this! I am the 2nd or 3rd generation born outside of China. When growing up, our "Cantonese" was laughed at because it wasn't "standard". My Chinese school teachers (from HK) tried to "correct" me. In 2009, I travelled to Nanning, Guangxi and found out they speak just like we speak at home! And now, for those who think they have the "correct" pronunciation, they need to be more open minded.
