Aoyama constantly tried to fail at his missions. He came in last place during the first qualifying round of the sports tournament. He did poorly on the midterms being 18th in the class, he tried to fail the final exam by trying to distract Uraraka with the crush question therefore hoping he wouldn't be allowed to go to the training camp. He tried to fail his hero license exam by sending out that beam to "stand out" He just could NOT stop twinkling or else he'd be killed. He also ate lunch alone in the classroom because he didn't want to really form close bonds with the other students. Everything he did came off as a joke but he was just so scared and crying out for help. He was only 14 ! he didn't deserve any of this!!!

You know the “I’m sorry Izuku” that broke him when his mom ran to hug him COULD have been because she actively turned down the quirk offer from Garaki. Don’t forget, HE was the doctor that day. And she narrowly avoided a deal with the devil and being under AFO’s thumb as well. One word choice different and Deku never would have been the perfect candidate for holding OFA.

@@TEX474 "I'm sorry, Izuku" seemed like a perfectly normal line for her to drop, to me. Sure, it's no *fault* of hers, but it's very common that parents feel at fault for not being able to give the life that their children would have wanted. Even when it's not actually their fault, they feel responsible. It was a line from a parent to her child that tugged at the heartstrings.

On thing I love that Horikoshi-sensei did was tie back La Brava and Gentle Criminal's little section of the School Festival Arc with the line "Just because you committed a crime doesn't make you a villain for life." Considering the fact that Gentle's entire life was thrown off by ONE mistake yet in the end he still surrendered himself willingly, really made me appreciate that section of the arc more in retrospect which is also where Aoyama's most obvious hint to being the traitor was placed.

Fun fact: The reason why Aoyama brought up Uraraka's crush on Deku in season 3 could be because he tried to self-sabotage himself so that he didn't have to go to the training camp and put his classmates in danger. Something that likely would have gotten him killed if he had succeeded. Basically, he tried to kill himself in an attempt not to endanger his friends, but he failed.

From the moment this was all revealed in the manga, I’ve been DYING for Jacob and Caleb’s reactions to not only the traitor reveal (which they thought was a dead plot line), but the Hagakure face reveal!
Also, throwback to when they casually mentioned “maybe it’s Hagakure” back in Season 2 when trying to figure out who the traitor is. 😅 That Bait and Switch gave me whiplash when I first read those chapters because at the end, it cut off with Hagakure eavesdropping!

Honestly, I'm fine with it culminating towards the end of the series. It makes sense there would be a pause of activity since AFO was in jail for awhile so Aoyama thought he could chill. Then he broke out and AFO had Deku under his influence to ware down until the class saved him to go back to UA, so then AFO could ask for favors again.
Because if it happened at the end of camp arc in S3, there would be less opportunity to add some building to Aoyama's character that we got in S3 license exam arc and S4 before the cultural festival arc. To actually show something from him having a dynamic with some of the class and Deku.

However, the villains weren't popular back then so Horikoshi had to cut that arc short, but he couldn't just have the villains leave without doing anything ( and this was their full debut too ) so bakugo got kidnapped as a result & thus the story got delayed in a sense.

I remember explaining to people that Hagakure couldn’t be the traitor when a chapter ended off with her hiding behind a tree narrating about the traitor. And I DISTINCTLY said “Oh please, AOYAMA has more build up than her.” And the next chapter came out and I went to a doctor to get my foot surgically removed so I could fit the entire thing in my mouth. And MY traitor suspect Principal Nezu NEVER got cleared of what I put together as why he was the most likely traitor, and worse GOT MORE SUSPICIOUS because he HARD CLEARED Aoyama in season 5 and one of the orders AFO gave out could ONLY come from people who saw Nighteye and All-Might’s argument in season 4. Which I discovered while trying to CLEAR Nezu AFTER Aoyama was revealed. All without finding any proof of my previous findings across the last 6 seasons to be any less suspicious with Aoyama now a factor.
I don’t argue with how Aoyama is the traitor and his role in all that. And I cried with how emotional it was. He’s GREAT. But the concept of this traitor circumstance needed backup that Aoyama on his own simply could not provide that other characters could have. Because the traitor storyline was dissected to the FIBER and I simply don’t think Horikoshi went as big on this as he could have. That being said, emotionally with the great parallels and other aspects, this episode is still fantastic and I did enjoy it across the board.

Horikoshi the author of MHA does this thing where volumes of the manga will have a character drawn on the spine. Volume 10 was the book depicting Bakugou being kidnapped and tied up by the league of villains back in Kamino. And who was on the spine? Aoyama. It showed Aoyama with an out-of-character guilty expression on his face that people found strange. The volume 10 cover itself was an art of Bakugou in the clutches of Shigaraki. But no one could really use it as concrete evidence because Horikoshi likes putting "unrelated" art of random characters on the spine, back cover, and inside covers. He also made it so those who did notice the Aoyama on the spine could make an assumption that it was just a reference to his big heroic moment trying to save Bakugou and Tokoyami. It was a very genius play on Horikoshi's part.

In the Manga, the chapter ended with AFO saying “I have many friends” with Invisible Girl on the cover, leading everyone to panic for a week! Following this, shortly after “revealing” her face, the cover of one of the following chapters was a full color art of her, fully visible and naked (wrapped up in Caution Tape to cover up her bits) so everyone could clearly see her hair and eye color. They really wanted to remind people “Oh right she’s always naked.” XD

Yes, Aoyama had a moment in the second half of S3 (License Exam) but also the second half of S4 before the Cultural Festival. I definitely also don't rewatch the license exam but his moment was the highlight of that part for me.

I have always said it had to be Hagakure as the traitor due to the first day of school when Aizawa made them do a bunch of physical tests and "whoever comes in last is kicked out."
Deku got a high score on throwing the ball when he broke his finger. He would still have one high score.
What physical test did Hagakure do that surpassed Deku throwing the ball? Because Deku came last.
    I still don't understand it!

Yup…so who was dead set on Aoyama? Who thought it was Kaminari? Or Hagakure, for that matter?

that shot of hagakure with "i have lots of friends" was a chapter ender. for a week i was popping the biggest bottles before the next chapter came out and proved me dead wrong 😭

I had a feeling it was gonna end up being Aoyama or Hagakure but my theorizing brain and heart wanted it to end up being Kaminari lol

First I was on the Kaminari train... then I thought it made more sense for it to be Hagakure... then I thought "damn Horikoshi fucking forgot the traitor subplot 😭"... I never even suspected Aoyama lmao

It's funny when people would say Uraraka could be the traitor. The motive as money. Some definitely said that though because they shipped something else so wanted more of an opportunity for her not to be close with Deku. 🤣

I was spoiled by Manga readers, but still gasped when Aoyama turned out to the the mole. I was like 'bish why you surprised, you knew it was him.' haha, idk I guess I just forgot at the time.

Aoyama is very similar to Draco Malfoy.

But better written. Rowling really dropped the ball on Malfoy in the books, I was deluding myself we were going to get some kind of cool team up for some table turning or something with him right up till the final chapters. I'm still annoyed all these years later. Aoyama is the Malfoy I wanted.

I don’t think it’s going to wrap up this season since the manga isn’t over yet despite being in the last chapters, but it’s also not enough to fill another full season. I think 3 cours should be enough to do it, unless they pull a Demon Slayer and have it done in a movie.
