    My EDC is an old Schrade -made Craftsman "Old Crafty" barlow with Imperial Prov. RI. marked blades. Sharp and slicey carbon steel blades can't be beat for a traditional pocket knife.

    I always loved the Barlow , Daddy carried an old Queen Barlow back in the ‘60s and bought me an old Colonial when I was 10 . I just picked up an old keen kutter and imperial Barlow with honey bone handles ,my favorite scales . Same color as your Queen .

As a granddaddy and Nana helping our wee lad (3 yo in May) twin grandsons start their collections, we really dig your content (been binging this afternoon), which reflects a true cutlery aficionado spirit, regardless of fads and ridiculously priced latest vogue steel or patter or gimmick! Rather, you are experienced, knowledgeable and confident enough to feature and compliment a Frost (per above!) when deserved! Nice presentation. I only became interested in this pattern in the last few years, and only have a few. I can see why they were so popular years ago. I haven’t found one I’m too excited about, but I will probably try a few more. I sometimes carry a Rough Rider Barlow when I’m working. It gets the job done and if I lose it in the hay field I won’t be crying myself to sleep.

    Love the Barlow. I've still got Barlows I got back in the late 60's as gifts from my dad and my uncles. Put them through hell with those carbon steel blades, but could they ever take an edge and hold it. I bought my last Colonial Barlow in 85 with scrimshaw panels at the base exchange in FT. CAMPBELL. When I was a young lad all us farm boys carried a pocket knife. A lot of them were cheap carbon blade knives. They sharpened up real easy and held their edge. We had a lot of uses for them around the farm. I even used mine to sharpen pencils when I was ar school. I doubt they would let anyone carry a knife in school these days.

    I love a Barlow and have a fair few myself. Mostly British (40+)as I’m in the U.K., and most of them Taylor’s Eye Witness (30 ish), a small number of USA made, a couple of Bökers, one JE Made, and most of the rest are Rough Rider/ Marbles.
    The Grandaddy makes a great desk knife. A perfect letter opener!
    A Barlow is the one pattern where the R on the bolster is OK. In my opinion, Barlows should have a stamp on the bolster and no shield!

Druther get the RRR017 barlow- D2 and micarta and the fat spear. I don’t get the granddaddy barlow, either - too dang big. We need a grandma barlow, 4 inches and a spear blade. I keep telling SMKW, and the sound of their answer is…crickets. Lol. Cool that the caliber is decent - they have a gunstock I’ve been looking at. There are some good Frosts! And some of the old ones are crazy cool designs. Anyway, thanks for the look at a chunk of your collection. Enjoyed it.

      Yessir, thanks for watching. Patiently waiting for the RRR Barlow. Hurry up already you dang boat! A Granny Barlow would be cool. All the Grandaddy needs is a lockback, not all that different from a single bladed trapper. Imagine a cinnamon stag Grandaddy lockback with no shield. Take my money.

    I've a tendency to go for just under the regulation 3 inches if I'm hiking locally so only the A Wright Barlow tends to get used much at present. Yes, the Grand Daddy Barlow's, the blades are up to smaller fixed blade size like Mora's and Hultafors so unless you wanted to definitely store your knife out of sight out of mind (probably quickly) it's not the ideal size. If I was camping with pets and kids it might be convenient. I have a one handed opener and closer for wood working when pets are around. I like the look of those Bear and Sons, there's an old fashionedness to them I like the look of in a Barlow.

    Yeah them Barlow's are some difficult knives to open if the nail nick is barely visible. I have an old Colonial knife Co. Barlow that is Carbon Steel. A recent acquisition to my collection is a Schrade Old Timer Barlow. I'll take a good or bad Barlow any day for pocket carry.

    It appears that the blades on these have "half stops." Is that correct? (I saw it pointed out on a model or two)
    I was taught a game called "jack knife" by my grandfather back in the 70s/80s, that involves a knife - roughly 4" I'm guessing - that has the long and short blades, but you can't use knives where those blades just smoothly open/close. The long one (at least) has to be able to half lock at 90 degrees or you can't plant it in the board for the flip, and it will move during the act of flipping it as it unsticks itself from the board, which throws off the scoring.

    • @ThriftyKaniffy
      @ThriftyKaniffy  Před rokem

      Not familiar with the game. Some have half stops, some don't. Thanks for sharing, AJ.

    • @cobbler88
      @cobbler88 Před rokem

      @@ThriftyKaniffy No one else seems to be either. But I'm sure some may have played it under a different name.
      You basically sit in facing chairs, with a plank laid lengthwise from one to the other. It's usually about 10-12" wide and soft enough that you can dig a point in without much pressure.
      You unfold the blades so that the small blade is fully out and the longer blade is at 90 degrees.
      You plop the point of the large blade down into the plank so that it's sticking just enough to not move but not so much that it effects the flip, with your finger supporting the bottom end of the knife body. At this point, the body creates about a 45-degree angle to the board. (if you go through the steps it's not nearly this complicated, btw).
      You then lift your finger to flip the knife. If it sticks with the large blade sticking and the base of the body touching the wood, it's 5 points, without the body touching, it's 10. With the big and small blades dug in, it's 15. Small blade only, 20, and if it lands on the spine of the knife with neither blade sticking, it's 25. Basically, it's five more points for every stage it could stick, from easiest to most difficult.
      When we were about 10, this could keep us busy for hours. I think we usually played to about 500. I've tried to bring it back, but have had a hell of a time finding a roughly 4" body and blades with half stops, which I'm sure you can see is pretty important with this game. Without them, the long blade opens up more when you flip it, or when it sticks etc.
      Take care.
