This song was written about the great singer Valerie Carter. She sang back up and recorded for a number of artists including James Taylor. I see James Taylor every time he performs in my general area (which is almost every year) Valerie was almost always there singing back up. Then one year, Valerie was not at the show. And I don't remember her ever being back again. It turns out that Valerie had a problem with addiction. There was a video of Valerie getting released from her obligation to the court for some sort of drug issue - or something like that. James Taylor came to the hearing and sang You've Got a Friend to Valerie in the courtroom. I'll never forget it. RIP beautiful Valerie

"Roll With It" is Winwood connecting to the music he loved when he was younger. To go from a 60s musician to a solo artist having hits in the 80s is pretty astounding in its difficulty. Other 80s artists could not have done "roll with it." Winwood could because that music is in his back pocket and he can easily execute it because he's not just a singer but a multi-instrumentalist and songwriter.

Steve Winwood played all of the instruments in this song. He also helped with the mixing of the song in the studio. Steve Winwood was in the "Spencer Davis Group" when he was sixteen and sounded like Ray Charles. He was also in the bands ""Traffic and"" Blind Faith". A very talented man!!!

  • @Shrykespeare
    @Shrykespeare Před rokem +42

Technically, you've done him twice before this... you did "Higher Love", but you also did "Can't Find My Way Home" by Blind Faith, of which he was a member. He was also in The Spencer Davis Group, and Traffic. Some of Steve's other great solo hits include "Roll With It", "Back in the High LIfe Again", and "The Finer Things". My personal favorite of his (after "Valerie") is "Freedom Overspill". It's a very underrated song, but a true banger! Also - I think this is the 1982 original version of the song. A remix was done in 1987, and THAT version hit the Billboard Top 10. It had more drums, and several other instruments as well. It was richer, fuller, and I think you'd love that version more than this one.

It's so funny you point out that the song needs a little "more" to it... He re-released it years later with a little more 80's production and additional instruments which is the one that I remember more. This one specifically reminds me of the time I had chicken pox and this version was on the radio a lot. The 80's one came out later, and I remember thinking "Oh, this is different!"

He started as Stevie Windwood with the Spencer Davis Group, but he's been with Traffic, Blind Faith, and when Cream split he was in a band with Eric Clapton and another with Ginger Baker! He plays a ton of instruments and is a songwriter as well. His Arc of the Diver album came out around when I started high school, and the song While You See A Chance blew me away. It always makes me happy to see you come back to one of my musical heroes in Steve Winwood. This is from his third solo album, 1982's Talking Back to the Night. You mention him playing the keyboards - on this album, he played EVERYTHING, something he has done many times in his career. If you listen to the 1987 remix he did of the song, you'll find the tweaked drums, guitar and bass you feel is missing, but his golden voice is always there.

You need to get the 1987 version, which went to #6 in the nation.
Story has it that a DJ remixed it on his own. Knew this could be better
It got back to Winwood, and he re-released the remixed single.
This is a rough draft of what this song was supposed to be.

This song has been haunting me for the past couple of days. I haven't heard it in years, and this week: a bunch of times. So weird. (BTW, when I saw Steve Winwood on tour, the boy I went with sang this song the entire drive to the concert.)

Guys! Y'all need to react to Loreena Mckennitt mummers dance. Swear you have heard nothing like this Ever! It's Celtic singer with an amazing voice and the melody of the song will transport you to another realm in time. It's definitely out there but the few people who have heard of this artist and song will tell you it's a hidden gem. There are some reaction videos already out there on it so although it's such a different genre people know of it. Would love to see you react to it.

This is one of his 80s solo pop hits. His career started back in the 63 as a teenager with the Spencer Davis Group. Songs such as Gimme some Lovin has a R&B sound. Songs from his band Traffic such as Dear Mr Fantasy and The Low Spark of the High Heeled Boys has more of a Psychedelic sound and 80s Arc of a Diver more pop. Long eclectic career. His vocals are very distinctive.

Wow, too bad You didn’t hear what I heard the first time I heard this song. That crying out in passion for his Valerie is what made this song one of my favs. I didn’t know the backstory until recently when Valerie Carter passed away during the COVID lockdowns. Valerie was an amazing back up singer during the 70’ & 80’s & was highly sought after by the most popular & talented musicians of the day. You can see her & her beauty in James Taylor’s ‘Live at the Beacon Theater’ concert. She’s the cute blonde in the short black dress with the infectious smile. Her life was a little tortured & she had her struggles as many do in that business & people like James Taylor were there to help her out of it. Valerie had such an impact on singer songwriters that in the business she was called on a lot & 2 major artist’s wrote & sang a song about her. One of course was ‘Valerie’ by Steve Winwood who was taken by her beauty & talent but then like the wind she was gone out of his life as he cries out ‘call on me, Valerie, come and see….me. I’m the same boy I used to be.’ The other artist who wrote & sang about Valerie was Jackson Browne who wrote the hit ‘That Girl could Sing’ in 1980. Rest In Peace & may God richly gracefully love Valerie Carter.

Steve Winwood was also in the super group Blind Faith as keyboardist and vocalist, which also included Eric Clapton on guitar, Ginger Baker on drums and Rick Grech on bass. This was after Cream disbanded. Their first album, in my opinion was the best with songs like Had to Cry Today, Presence Of The Lord and Can’t Find MY Way Home. Steve Winwood is a great keyboardist and guitarist as well as a top shelf vocalist.

Spencer Davis Group, Blind Faith, and Traffic were some of the groups that he played with. His career had a resurgence with the song "Back in the High Life", every time he played that song he played with emotion as that was his feeling that his career was back on track.

  • @collegiateathletesoftomorr7979

In the chronology of his wonderful career, the era of "Valerie," "Arc of a Diver" and "While you See a Chance" was more or less wedged between his much earlier years with Traffic & his comeback album "Back in the High Life" in the mid-80s.

Steve Winwood was a music prodigy like Michael Jackson- at age 17 he was putting out #1 hits in the MID-60s, at age 13 he was in the backup band for Ray Charles when he toured England, he was in the group Spencer Davis Group in the mid-60s and actually knocked the Beatles out of #1 in the UK charts in January 1967, he was then in Blind Faith with Eric Clapton for 1 album, he formed his oen group Traffic that had multiple classic records in the 70s and THEN finally went solo in the 80s where he put out the two songs that you've reacted to..he is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame... You need to listen to: Spencer Davis Group, I'm a Man or Gimme Some Lovin when he was 17. ,, or Blind Faith's Cn't Find My Way Home, or Traffics's Freedom Rider...When Eric Clapton heard him in a UK bar performance he was blown away by a pimply teen who sounded like Ray Charles (because he was trying to emulate his hero Ray Charles) and said I've got to be in a band with him- that lead to Blind Faith.. He can play keyboards, guitar and sing and is considered one of the biggest talents in Rock History

I grew up on songs like this in the 80s but realize now that I never understood A SINGLE WORD! I read the lyrics while listening to your reaction, and I didn't even know he was saying "Valerie," which is the title of the song. The only thing I understood clearly then (and now, honestly. He has an accent) was, "I'm the same boy I used to be." Despite never knowing the real words, I always loved this song!
