I have watched a plethora of handgun and shotgun round comparisons using all sorts of materials/mediums but this is the most helpful to me personally so far. I have both the Governor and the Bond Arms Patriot plus having each brand of the rounds that you tested. Very helpful to see how little the #6 shot did and the comparisons of the premium shotshells. Kudos and thanks!
Awesome review. Clear and concise! I currently have the pdx1 defender in my Governor but it looks like I should pick up some of that Hornady. Best 410 defensive shell review on CZcams. SUBBED!!!👍
Good review. Nothing I hate more than people testing the Judge and Governor at 25+ yards with .410 or testing birdshot as a self defense shell and then calling it an ineffective sidearm. People who do that are either stupid, don’t know how PD views self defense cases, or have a grudge with the weapon to begin with in which case they won’t give an accurate and honest review anyway.
This video is exactly what I was looking for, thank you for your time to compare a few options. Please don’t tell someone what there “ choice “ is. Like the person that lives in the condo and doesn’t want to kill there neighbor is a great point nor do I want to kill my son sleeping in his bedroom. I don’t care who you are or what drugs your on at 3 yards and # 6 shot with 6 rounds, the perp is not going to be happy. Show me someone that can take 6 shotgun shots to the chest and keep coming.
Great review!!! I thoroughly agree that any rounds besides the defensive rounds would be a waste of time in this firearm unless at the range for fun. The three that you chose are indeed my top three as well. Thanks for sharing.
@@authorizeduser9762thank you for creating this video. I found it helpful. I think I would rather choose 4 wound channels created by the Federal premium handgun over the Hornady with the FTX. Just my opinion.
Now this is a actual logical review of the Judge/Governor. I am getting tired of so many CZcamsrs just out right being illogical in their use of these guns and contradicting themselves, using horrible ammo not made for the gun or trying to go sniper distance and then calling the guns trash or ineffective because they failed to hit the target with pellets at 100 yards I've seen even the smartest CZcamsrs making the most illogical and upsetting mistakes that it's down right crazy to actually think people with so much knowledge are down right purposely or non purposely trying to make the gun do things it was not designed to do I have not personally shot any of those .410 rounds but I have came to a similar conclusion that you have in this video based on research and watching other videos on all the rounds I just recently picked up a Judge, I can actually conceal it, what shocked me most was the weight actually and not the size or length. The heaviness was the most accurate thing I found to be true when I got my Judge, I can actually iwb carry the Judge, at least based on me doing it at home with no holster, I bought a iwb holster so I'll have to see if it works or not with it The weight is definitely something to consider, I wouldn't even worry about the size of it, it's the weight that is most noticable at least to me I have the 3 inch cylinder and 3 inch barrel model so I can get the 3 inch shells, the only difference is I can get 5 pellets in the Federal instead of 4 The governor holds another round though so really it's a wash what someone wants, I'd just pick which gun up that I want honestly out of the two, both are cool to me My opinion is that the Federal, Nobel Sport and Hornady are the best rounds and I personally think PDX1 is the worst, at least for carry. I will explain my theory and logic I will also explain my theory about why I think Federal is better for the Judge and Nobel Sport might be better for the Governor So the reason I think Federal is the best at least in the Judge platform is because there is a 5 pellet version which is more pellets of 000 buckshot then the other brands The patterns are tight enough that I am confident they won't miss the intended target even if used in public The 5 pellets causing 5 wounds and increasing chance to hit something vital as well as penetrating good is what makes me think in theory that it is the best or at least one of the best brands and ammo For the Governor, I don't own one, but if I did my theory is that maybe Nobel Sport 000 buckshot is the best My theory is that the Nobel Sport is similar to the Federal in Pattern and in the Governor you can only use the 4 pellets version of the federal ammo Well the Nobel Sport also has 4 pellets per shell and they are bigger pellets I guess it would come down to how they pattern compared to the federal and the penetration If they are similar I think Nobel Sport would be better in theory because the pellets are bigger, they are .40 I think in size compared to federals .36 The only reason I ordered Federal over Nobel sport in my Judge is because I can get one more pellet in the Federal The Hornady looks really impressive and I would be confident those rounds would stop a threat, it's just my theory and opinion that I theorize that maybe the extra 1-2 000 buckshot rounds could possibly stop the threat quicker I think if the Hornady is more accurate with the slug portion then maybe it could be argued it's better for accuracy and the balls are just in case you slightly missed what you aimed for However if the Hornady slug doesn't go where you aim then I would just think the 000 buckshot from federal or Nobel sport would be better That's just my opinion I could see an argument for using Hornady though and I wouldn't dare to call in ineffective because it clearly is effective I do have a problem with the PDX1 though, my opinion is that most people using that round are kinda ummm, my opinion is it's not the smartest round to use but that's just me I'm not saying the PDX1 is weak because it's not, I just don't see the reasoning behind it as the other ammo brands does what the PDX1 does but better in my opinion The situation I see PDX1 being superior is only in a few The main reason I dislike PDX1 is because the pellet spread is horrible and will most definitely miss the target unless you are point blank range or very close, those pellets will most definitely hit something or someone in public or possibly in your own house unless you shoot the target at very close range The only way I would personally ever load PDX1 in my gun would be if I am using it as a point blank range or very very close up type of weapon It would be better to use in a home where maybe you don't have to worry about hitting innocent people or better used if you don't live around people Maybe even in your vehicle I could see a possible argument that it could be good for home defense for someone who just needs to aim and shoot and might have bad aim because at least something will hit them Other than these specific situations I think people are being unwise if they are carrying PDX1 thinking it is superior to the other brands that you don't have to be concerned about accidentally hitting targets you did not intend to hit There plates are good but those pellets is why I would never personally use those rounds I like knowing and being confident that when I fire my rounds at a target that my rounds will hit at what I aimed at and not hit anything other than my intended target There is no debating that the PDX1 pellets WILL miss it's target if you are using it past point blank range or very close up The Federal, Hornady and Nobel Sport always seem to hit their intended target with all the pellets which in my opinion is why these rounds are much wiser to use and I would even feel comfortable using these rounds in public at 7 yards and possibly even more Federal, Nobel Sport and Hornady all look formidable, I would feel confident carrying any of those rounds in public or at home PDX1 I would only use at home if I don't have kids or lived by myself or maybe if I gave it to a female or person who I thought maybe hasn't practiced aiming, but I would strictly limit it to home use or vehicle use because I know I am reosonsible for all those pellets that spread way to much I guess a argument could be made that the PDX1 could possibly be more devestating at closer ranges because then all the pellets would hit and they would maybe get more penetration But why would I want to risk having to be in one specific situation at such a close range when I can go with the other three rounds I mentioned and be confident they will hit the target with all rounds even at further distances PDX1 for up close and personal, vehicle/home defense only in my opinion Federal, Nobel Sport and Hornady all great choices for self defense, all pretty nice patterns too and penetration Leave the other non handgun 410 ammo for the long guns they were made for Thanks for the video, videos like this is what the guns are made for, self defense ranges People keep making videos trying to shoot these guns with shotgun ammo from 60+ feet away then call the gun crap as if they expected the results to be good from that far away from a handgun using shotgun ammo That's like shooting a 12 gauge from 5,000 feet away and none of the pellets hit the target then calling the gun crap and ineffective Glad you showed what the JUDGE/GOVERNOR can do Both guns are cool, I'd get the one you like or want most Anyone who thinks these rounds won't stop a bad guy are still in denial I think people don't want to admit that a handgun can do something that a shotgun is supposed to do That's why I think people refuse to accept the facts because admitting these rounds as effective means the Judge/Govern does make a pretty good handgun shotgun People been told for so long that these aren't shotguns so they don't want to accept or believe what they are capable of with the correct ammo made for them Is it a 12 gauge? No, but there is no debating these two guns shoot multiple projectiles with each trigger pull capable of penetrating 12 or more inches into a target In my opinion this is more effective than most handgun rounds because of the multiple wounds, multiple vital hit chances, and more rounds on target faster
I have also noticed some bad reviews of the Judge/Governor and what they mostly fail to realize is that these guns are ideally suited to shoot buckshot at the typical defensive range of 5 to 7 yards. Putting 4 or 5 holes in an assailant at that range with one pull of the trigger would likely be a very effective defense. I will point out one error in your analysis, and that is the Nobel Sport in the Governor is limited to only 3 pellets (2-1/2" shell). The 4 pellet variation is the 3" shell and so will not fit in the Governor. But regardless of that, the 3 pellet (.40 caliber) balls might still be preferable to the Federal 4 pellet (.36 caliber) balls since they would likely penetrate better. It would be interesting to see a ballistic gel test of the 3 pellet.
1st off, EXCELLENT video! In my opinion, the PDX1 is a hybrid round. In a firearm you have a fairly substantial anti personnel round AND a pest control round in one... I personally carry the same gun in multiple locations and I have to be concerned with vermin, venomous snakes and be ready for people as well. This will keep someone from having to switch between 000 buck and #6. As you saw though, as a compromise, it was the least effective of the top three, it's nice though to have a hybrid round to choose from. 👊🍻
I've shot the Federal 000 buck shot in my Governor a number of times at the range. I can attest to the 4 balls/pellets maintaining a very tight group at distances from 18 feet or closer. This is very good when you consider the distances you would engage an armed intruder(s) in your home during a home invasion. I was happy to see the penetrating power and the water jug tests in this video. So, as you proved, either the Hornaday or Federal would be the best .410 choices for self-defense. Thank you for making this video. It gave me confidence in the Federal .410 round to be a manstopper.
An interesting bit I've learn recently. That Hornady shell moves at 220fps faster out of the Judge 6inch barrel over the governor and 3inch Judge. That equates to a massive impact difference in energy, you're talking a middle ground .357 power, but with 3 holes instead of one, which is absolutely devastating.
Also unlike usual shotgun barrels since they have rifled barrels on the .410 revolvers and 6 inches is more rifling to go through that 3 it actually increases spread when using shotshells
I actually like the Winchester Defenders for two good reasons. First, it features the two discs for decent center mass penetration, plus the BBs for additional coverage. If you aren't the best shot, shooting at night, or shooting from the hip, I'd rather get at least SOMETHING hitting the target, and with these shells you get both. Although the bird shot doesn't have much in terms of penetration, getting hit in the face at close range is going to make any intruder think twice, and remember, you'll always have five follow-up rounds remaining if you need them.
Good video. Good info. To me the BBs in the PDX round aren't just a nuisance. I am thinking it would be 12 more things bleeding! 3 Devastating wounds and 12 other things bleeding with one shot. It would be a nightmare for the ER physician if the threat made it that far! I'm thinking a center mass shot would stop most threats. So, I wouldn't dismiss that round. I keep a lot of different 410 shots for my Judge Poly. Even #9 for snakes.
Great video this really helped me out a lot with the ammo I have with me now (federal and winchecter PDX) i'll def be using the federal in my Governor as my night stand!
Thank you, good sir! This, by far, is the best video for my Home Defense round selection. I will rearm my uncle's Governor with the PDX for the spread and my Honcho with Hornady and Federal, alternating. The high velocity #4 I have loaded will use too many rounds to stop the intended target.
Although the PDX1 is not the favorite , one thing to consider is that with the large spread of the 12 BBs , if the 3 discs dont do the job on an attacker u could possibly blind him with bb shot to the eyes. At the very least u ruin their complexion for easy ID by the police if they escape!
Videos like this and others convinced me to get a 200 round case of Federal 410 handgun 3" 000 buck. Judging by their spread on paper and effectiveness on watermelons that I've had, I have made the right decision. That 5th pellet of the 3" shell drops the fps from 850 to 775, but I can live with that. Adding 16 foot-pounds and an extra chance to hit vitals is A-okay.
I have been watching reviews of this gun and ammo for years and this is the first one that is almost perfect it's so good. Some of that high praise is due to the horrible effort by others, they suck compared to yours here, they just can't get it done right at all, this review answered and showed exactly what I and most people wanted to see and I agree with all of your assessments here. I personally rate the Triple defense and the Federal 000 buck a tie for first place with all the others a distant 2nd and less. The Winchester seemed to get all the hype and attention when it came out but it's a gimmick for sure, the 3 discs are too light to give good penetration and the BB's are a joke. I still love the Leigh Defense Max Expansion rounds enough to alternate them with the Federal 000 or the Triple Defense. Great job my friend, I wish more people on youtube would understand how to do a review like yours, clean video, good narration, great testing of the spread at defense distances, and the water jugs to show how much distortion can be expected. Just perfect.
As of June 2024 the Federal premium 000 buck 2-1/2 inch shells are still very hard to find! (I wonder if Federal even makes them anymore?) But I see the Hornady triple defense in a lot of places. Thanks!
I carry a governor concealed (wear a suit jacket most days which helps do so) loaded with Hornaday. Thanks making me even more confident in my choices haha
I carry the governor all the time. Rabbit hunting I use that Super X number 6, hasn't failed me yet! I carry 3 000 buck and 3 45 colt (personal defense) when I go camping or hiking. I did have a weird non-firing issue with the Hornady PDX1 loads, I would pull the trigger......but no boom. Come to find out the primers were seated differently and my firing pin was not striking the primer! I proceeded to reload my own .410 ammo with the PDX insides and it shot no problem. Weird problem but ALWAYS TEST YOUR CARRY AMMO!! Great video, you deserve more subs.
Great review, well done. Hows about doing a follow up test with the various types of 2 1/2 inch rifled slugs. I believe you will find that the Brenneke CLOSE ENCOUNTER(2 1/2 inch) to be way superior to any type of foster slug. And I agree with you Sir, the Hornady critical defense TRIPLE DEFENSE is the way to go. Pairing the S&W Governor with the Mossberg HS .410, and using the above mentioned slugs and buckshot (which fits both guns). Those two together should git r done for close range work.. Good review..sbr.
Gun Adapters aka Short Lane adapters makes rifled tubes that chamber in the 410 chamber of the Governor. From 22 S, L, LR in one and 38 Special and one for 9mm and one for a variety of 32 caliber cartridges so look for it and maybe do a test in your Governor. I would get the rifled tubes and the six that come as a set. Worth it for SHTF ammo shortage catch as catch can system.
Personally a big fan of knowing Exactly where each of my rounds (pellets) fall on my target. Not much for the "fliers" that could harm an innocent. Going with a quality round/ shell, combined with knowing my firearm keeps the safety rating at maximum. Thanx 4 the vid!
Very nice! Perhaps consider firing followup shots to confirm the grouping of each type of ammo. One time where they spread a lot or very little can be a rare event but if it happens 6 times you can be relatively sure it's the normal behavior. Perhaps once with a detailed look, like you did, then put another 5 on the target to see if the spread is similar, and a quick recap.
I just got one of the governors. Came with both PDX-1 and Remington HD shells. I have yet to try them, but from your review and one other I've seen. Looks like I'll be picking up some federal premium and or Hornaday asap. Thank you!
You have options with the Governor revolver. The Two moon clip .45 A.C.P. or using the .45 G.A.P. loaded with Winchester Silvertip gives excellent accuracy. The option of mixing two .45 LC with two .45 G.A.P. rounds in the moon clip with two Federal 000 Buck makes a good self defense platform. The first shots should be at 5-7 yards maximum for Buckshot. The moonclips are definitely a better option at 15-25 yards using a good hollowpoint round.
Thanks for the learning experience. I shoot all the disciplines, but shoot .12ga shotgun (Trap) every week. Just learning about .410 gauge. Thank you. Ed Pasco
If you shoot that #6 load right in some one's face/neck area you will stop the threat because nobody wants to get shot twice. Good testing as it helped to see the patterns of them first couple shots.
It’s a Taurus Judge. No, I don’t have one. Similar to the Governor, but it holds one less round, accepts 3” shells, and does not have a scandium frame. Plus it’s about $250 cheaper.
4:14 & 12:22 The BBs inside of the PDX1 are able to go 4-6 inches into flesh. They are far more than an "irritant". Also, the Remington HD Home Defense shells aren't made for a pistol. Put'em in a normal shotty and they'll act like how the Federal did. At least, they did for my Mossberg 500 field.
Broken Shield thanks for the comment. The video was to demonstrate my results with accuracy and penetration. No, I did not have ballistics gel, but was consistent with my choice of target. With regards to your comment on the PDX1, I can’t imagine the BBs would stop the threat by “going 4-6 inches” after having to penetrate clothes. In comparison to the defense disks, the BBs would not stop the threat. Also, according to Tactical Life, the Remington are made specifically for a .410 pistol. www.tactical-life.com/news/remington-410-ultimate-home-defense-load/
@@authorizeduser9762 You're putting words in my mouth. I never said the BBs would "Stop The Treat", I said they're "far more than an irritant", which they are. Imagine getting stabbed with a dozen thick needles all at once. The BBs are to cause more pain and panic into your attacker. And, yes. They'll go 4-6 inches into flesh, even though a hoodie. Though, i doubt they'd be any good against a thick winter jacket. The Remington HDs i had didn't have the word "pistol" on it anywhere. So i fired them through my little 410 pump and it worked just fine. I also tried them though my Judge "Public Defender" and they acted just like yours did. I just checked several(3) sites and i can't find one (aside from the link you gave) that is telling me they're for pistols. But seeing as how they say their ammo goes 1200+ FPS, i can't Imagine they're saying that about a little 2 inch barrel defense gun. EDIT: czcams.com/video/NXHzFntUAp4/video.html Guys shooting the PDX1 410 at gel through 4 layers of denim. Some BBs went 14 inches. That's sure a helluva lot more than a "irritant" =P Oh, and time stamp for the shot is 7 min 26 second.
I shot Hornedy Critical Defense out of my Governor I bought last July 2020 and it would lockup the cylinder, I sent it back to S & W and they put a new cylinder and extractor pin on it. I got it back and after a half of box of Hornady Critical Defense it did the same thing. I love the S & W Governor but in a defensive situation I don't need it the cylinder to lock up. I'm just gonna get a new one.
Or just use both - 3 federal alternating with 3 hornady! And though the remington has a rather large spread, this could in certain situations be an advantage. For example, a single or multiple attackers coming at you from the same general direction with no other innocents in the background. You will be scared anyways to the point where your aiming accuracy will likely be greatly reduced so just pull the trigger 6 times to get lead in the air.
Those extra pellets in the Winchester PDX limit the effective use of the round where there is anyone remotely in the background area who could be hit. I feel in an SD situation there could be many scenarios where others could be in the field of fire. The Hornady seems to somewhat defeat the point of the 410 by most of the emphasis going to the slug and the velocity is low, so you may as well use 45 Colt which would be much more effective. IMO the Federal Handgun Buck is the best option, I've found their Premium Buck groups really well in any gun I've fired it from, their 12 gauge round is incredible for placing all the Buck in a tight group.
The bbs are good against snakes & guarantee a hit against a man. If the perp is wearing body armour it could blind him while you set up the kill shot. Gruesome thought but... the important thing is to score a quick hit & incapacitate him. For shock & awe dragon's breath works well too though it will probably set your lawn on fire.
I've been considering one of these for the center storage box of my car, loaded with larger sized bird shot. I think of it as a more potent way of getting someone away from me than pepper spray, rather than a _necessarily_ lethal weapon.
Blasting someone in the face with bird shot could easily be lethal but even if it’s not you still could incure whatever liability from doing that. Sounds to me more like you wanna do a warning shot? I know it’s a scary and gruesome possibility but If you’re pointing a gun at someone with finger on trigger you really have to be okay with the fact that you may end it for them if you pull that trigger! ….I carry the Hornady triple defense and or the federal 000 buck. 👌
Great ammo review. I just bought the Governor and picking it up tomorrow. Bought just for fun. I'm going to look for the Hornady or Federal ammo you suggested. I already prematurely bought two 20 box sets of Hornady Critical Defense, 2.5" (two 35 cal round balls). Any feedback on this load? Thanks again, Ed Pasco
I’m confused with what you said... two .35 balls. That’s the Hornady I tested... two balls plus a slug. I’ve never heard of a 2.5” shell with just two balls.
Hi, Thanks for responding. I did leave out one part: it says"410 Triple Defense. it is 2.5". 41 Cal FTX Slug". Then it says "Two 35 Cal Rd balls. 300 ft-lb 750 fps. Sorry. Three altogether. Picking up the revolver this morning. Thanks.
Yup! That’s the exact ammo I have in mine now. Devastatingly powerful and accurate. IMO, it’s the only ammo to use for massively effective self defense. Grip it tight! It has quite a kick. To help with that, I actually put on bigger rubber grips (that came from my stainless steel S&W 686+. I replaced the 686 rubber grips with beautiful wood grips, and put the old rubber ones on my Governor). It’s not necessary, but I do like the ‘slightly’ bigger grips for the kick. Enjoy, my friend!
Hey, thanks for your comment! However, it's completely untrue. If you put a .45 ACP in the cylinder of the Smith & Wesson Governor, it will fall through halfway down the cylinder. I'm sorry, my friend, but you are wrong in this instance. But thanks for watching, I appreciate it!
Buckshot and hornety! Hi, 1st time seeing your videos. I've been wanting to buy a governor or judge for some time now. Needleas to say, I know what ammo to buy now, thanks to you. This clip is going into my faves after buy that bad motha. Thanks again!
Smaller bb’s fill up empty space in the shot cup, like Fshot! More is better, better is good 😂. Correction to your dialogue too, you said Winchester when you posted Remington being the crap ammunition 😢
Ok, now that this is finished. Try to buy some of these rounds? Even big stores like Sportsmans Warehouse are out of stock and have been for quite some time.
The difference in the first two rounds weren't necessarily the brand. The "defense" branded ammunition is all subsonic garbage. Buckshot .410 is for hunting and is basically 12 gauge 000buck but only 3 rounds instead of 9.
I carry the Governor for walking in the swamps and woods of NC. I generally carry field load #8 for snakes. My question is, if I come upon bipedal predators, what's the best 45LC/ACP load it can handle?
@@authorizeduser9762 ok but if you have a good aim you would still kill him, the pellets are a conciliation prize. If you have limited time every shot must count, regardless of damage. So, the probability is expanded. I'm thinking 1 vs 6 guys But I do agree. Pretty weak
Make sure the brass on 410 is long enough to not expand back out of the cylinder and jam. Every shot will jam if it is less than the standard 1/2” length...
My Governor would lock up when I shot Hornedy Critical Defense , the cylinder would just lock up I them sent it back to S & W they changed the cylinder and extractor pin.i got it back and it still does it. I love the gun but, I'm going to buy another one.
@@peterdelios663 Brand like federal makes both types of shells. You just need to make sure you get the right type. Usually "defense" rds have the higher brass and all the 45LC rounds work without too much issue. Try searching "high brass vs low brass" either works ok in a 410 shotgun but not true in the governor.
Tried the Remington ultimate defender 4 pellet. Worked much better than the hornady from a malfunction standpoint. Shells dropped in and extracted easily. Some light strikes
Using a birdshot, don't shot them in the body but in the head. I 've seen someone shot a homemade 410 pistol birdshot one shot. Shot the guy in 15 -20 yards, killed the guy. His aim is not the body but the head. Pellets went through the eyes and throat. I don't know anybody will like that type of damage. Governor is a well-made gun, if you shot him in the head part, it will go through and kill the man easily. at 5 or 10 yards, pretty easy.
Federal premium looks best if I could find it. No bird shot fillers like Winchester. All buisness. I handload 12 gauge 000 Buck 6 pellets. You will loose velocity.
I think what we've learned today is federal outperforms everything in every gun that I've ever shot them out of federal is the best shotgun shell you can buy
# 4's work well whereas # 6's, as you proved, do not... My tests were on cardboard ... 6's or 7 & 1/2/s dented but #4 's went through and had a large pattern ...i.e . good marksman's ship not needed .... best snake load # 4 .... Aim for a crotch shot .... hells bells ... #8's would work close up .... and personal ... don't'cha see
This is by far the best video test of the 410 defensive ammo.
Thank you very much!
I live in an apartment where on all walls there are other tenants top, bottom, and sides. Birdshot say in #4 might be the only safe option
In my opinion the best review I have seen with revolver .410
thank you so much!
Thank you so much! I had fun making it.
Jeffrey Howell I won’t lie... your video was an inspiration!
@@authorizeduser9762thank you for creating this video. I found it helpful.
I think I would rather choose 4 wound channels created by the Federal premium handgun over the Hornady with the FTX. Just my opinion.
Great video. I have a Governor and the Federal 000 and Hornady are my favorite.
Now this is a actual logical review of the Judge/Governor. I am getting tired of so many CZcamsrs just out right being illogical in their use of these guns and contradicting themselves, using horrible ammo not made for the gun or trying to go sniper distance and then calling the guns trash or ineffective because they failed to hit the target with pellets at 100 yards
I've seen even the smartest CZcamsrs making the most illogical and upsetting mistakes that it's down right crazy to actually think people with so much knowledge are down right purposely or non purposely trying to make the gun do things it was not designed to do
I have not personally shot any of those .410 rounds but I have came to a similar conclusion that you have in this video based on research and watching other videos on all the rounds
I just recently picked up a Judge, I can actually conceal it, what shocked me most was the weight actually and not the size or length. The heaviness was the most accurate thing I found to be true when I got my Judge, I can actually iwb carry the Judge, at least based on me doing it at home with no holster, I bought a iwb holster so I'll have to see if it works or not with it
The weight is definitely something to consider, I wouldn't even worry about the size of it, it's the weight that is most noticable at least to me
I have the 3 inch cylinder and 3 inch barrel model so I can get the 3 inch shells, the only difference is I can get 5 pellets in the Federal instead of 4
The governor holds another round though so really it's a wash what someone wants, I'd just pick which gun up that I want honestly out of the two, both are cool to me
My opinion is that the Federal, Nobel Sport and Hornady are the best rounds and I personally think PDX1 is the worst, at least for carry.
I will explain my theory and logic
I will also explain my theory about why I think Federal is better for the Judge and Nobel Sport might be better for the Governor
So the reason I think Federal is the best at least in the Judge platform is because there is a 5 pellet version which is more pellets of 000 buckshot then the other brands
The patterns are tight enough that I am confident they won't miss the intended target even if used in public
The 5 pellets causing 5 wounds and increasing chance to hit something vital as well as penetrating good is what makes me think in theory that it is the best or at least one of the best brands and ammo
For the Governor, I don't own one, but if I did my theory is that maybe Nobel Sport 000 buckshot is the best
My theory is that the Nobel Sport is similar to the Federal in Pattern and in the Governor you can only use the 4 pellets version of the federal ammo
Well the Nobel Sport also has 4 pellets per shell and they are bigger pellets
I guess it would come down to how they pattern compared to the federal and the penetration
If they are similar I think Nobel Sport would be better in theory because the pellets are bigger, they are .40 I think in size compared to federals .36
The only reason I ordered Federal over Nobel sport in my Judge is because I can get one more pellet in the Federal
The Hornady looks really impressive and I would be confident those rounds would stop a threat, it's just my theory and opinion that I theorize that maybe the extra 1-2 000 buckshot rounds could possibly stop the threat quicker
I think if the Hornady is more accurate with the slug portion then maybe it could be argued it's better for accuracy and the balls are just in case you slightly missed what you aimed for
However if the Hornady slug doesn't go where you aim then I would just think the 000 buckshot from federal or Nobel sport would be better
That's just my opinion
I could see an argument for using Hornady though and I wouldn't dare to call in ineffective because it clearly is effective
I do have a problem with the PDX1 though, my opinion is that most people using that round are kinda ummm, my opinion is it's not the smartest round to use but that's just me
I'm not saying the PDX1 is weak because it's not, I just don't see the reasoning behind it as the other ammo brands does what the PDX1 does but better in my opinion
The situation I see PDX1 being superior is only in a few
The main reason I dislike PDX1 is because the pellet spread is horrible and will most definitely miss the target unless you are point blank range or very close, those pellets will most definitely hit something or someone in public or possibly in your own house unless you shoot the target at very close range
The only way I would personally ever load PDX1 in my gun would be if I am using it as a point blank range or very very close up type of weapon
It would be better to use in a home where maybe you don't have to worry about hitting innocent people or better used if you don't live around people
Maybe even in your vehicle
I could see a possible argument that it could be good for home defense for someone who just needs to aim and shoot and might have bad aim because at least something will hit them
Other than these specific situations I think people are being unwise if they are carrying PDX1 thinking it is superior to the other brands that you don't have to be concerned about accidentally hitting targets you did not intend to hit
There plates are good but those pellets is why I would never personally use those rounds
I like knowing and being confident that when I fire my rounds at a target that my rounds will hit at what I aimed at and not hit anything other than my intended target
There is no debating that the PDX1 pellets WILL miss it's target if you are using it past point blank range or very close up
The Federal, Hornady and Nobel Sport always seem to hit their intended target with all the pellets which in my opinion is why these rounds are much wiser to use and I would even feel comfortable using these rounds in public at 7 yards and possibly even more
Federal, Nobel Sport and Hornady all look formidable, I would feel confident carrying any of those rounds in public or at home
PDX1 I would only use at home if I don't have kids or lived by myself or maybe if I gave it to a female or person who I thought maybe hasn't practiced aiming, but I would strictly limit it to home use or vehicle use because I know I am reosonsible for all those pellets that spread way to much
I guess a argument could be made that the PDX1 could possibly be more devestating at closer ranges because then all the pellets would hit and they would maybe get more penetration
But why would I want to risk having to be in one specific situation at such a close range when I can go with the other three rounds I mentioned and be confident they will hit the target with all rounds even at further distances
PDX1 for up close and personal, vehicle/home defense only in my opinion
Federal, Nobel Sport and Hornady all great choices for self defense, all pretty nice patterns too and penetration
Leave the other non handgun 410 ammo for the long guns they were made for
Thanks for the video, videos like this is what the guns are made for, self defense ranges
People keep making videos trying to shoot these guns with shotgun ammo from 60+ feet away then call the gun crap as if they expected the results to be good from that far away from a handgun using shotgun ammo
That's like shooting a 12 gauge from 5,000 feet away and none of the pellets hit the target then calling the gun crap and ineffective
Glad you showed what the JUDGE/GOVERNOR can do
Both guns are cool, I'd get the one you like or want most
Anyone who thinks these rounds won't stop a bad guy are still in denial
I think people don't want to admit that a handgun can do something that a shotgun is supposed to do
That's why I think people refuse to accept the facts because admitting these rounds as effective means the Judge/Govern does make a pretty good handgun shotgun
People been told for so long that these aren't shotguns so they don't want to accept or believe what they are capable of with the correct ammo made for them
Is it a 12 gauge? No, but there is no debating these two guns shoot multiple projectiles with each trigger pull capable of penetrating 12 or more inches into a target
In my opinion this is more effective than most handgun rounds because of the multiple wounds, multiple vital hit chances, and more rounds on target faster
I Like What You did Here First, You did a Safety Check First by Checking to that Your Gun is Clear,
1st off, EXCELLENT video!
So glad you enjoyed it!
You're an excellent reviewer.
Great video! Just invested in a governor. I'm sold on the federal premium
You should try the lehigh defense maximum expansion 45 colt rounds. Made specifically for the judge and governor
This is my next firearm for sure, great for my night stand, as well as for camping and hiking, lots of snakes and hungry coyotes around here
Great video! I think the key to these shotshells accuracy is in the wads.
Thanks for the great reply!
Thank you, good sir! This, by far, is the best video for my Home Defense round selection. I will rearm my uncle's Governor with the PDX for the spread and my Honcho with Hornady and Federal, alternating. The high velocity #4 I have loaded will use too many rounds to stop the intended target.
You're welcome! Glad you found it informative.
Although the PDX1 is not the favorite , one thing to consider is that with the large spread of the 12 BBs , if the 3 discs dont do the job on an attacker u could possibly blind him with bb shot to the eyes. At the very least u ruin their complexion for easy ID by the police if they escape!
Nice ammo test, hope folks pay attention to it!
Wow. Just wow. You made my day with your kind words. Thank you.
One of my 1'st CZcams videos showcases the Federal 000 Buck out to 10 yards, this is my hands down favorite.
Where do you obtain it?
Pain is also stopping power. Most people aren't gonna advance through a hail of birdshot.
I'm happy that you carry the Governor, but sad you have to wear a suit jacket. :-)
@@authorizeduser9762 I'm sad too but hey, I make the most of it. Like being able to carry my favorite handgun haha
You do know that Hornady makes the Triple Defense, not the PDX-1 right? Winchester make PDX1.
My super x 6 will not kill
a squirrel for nothing!
Thank you man really learned a lot.
You're welcome! Glad to hear it.
The bb's are icing on the cake
I always use Federal Premium 000 in my Taurus Judge...gotta luv it..bird shot is great 4 cottonmouths down here in S LA swamps !

Where do you get the fed premium?
@@mikeprice8307 Found some @ Cabelas couple yrs ago..bought every box they had..hard 2 find..mayb they can do special order?

Gun Adapters aka Short Lane adapters makes rifled tubes that chamber in the 410 chamber of the Governor. From 22 S, L, LR in one and 38 Special and one for 9mm and one for a variety of 32 caliber cartridges so look for it and maybe do a test in your Governor. I would get the rifled tubes and the six that come as a set. Worth it for SHTF ammo shortage catch as catch can system.
Nice results on the
Hornady Defense
410 triple defense
Xavier Absolutely! It’s what I have loaded in my Governor right now!
Everyone needs a Govna in their collection. 👍
Great demonstration dude
Personally a big fan of knowing Exactly where each of my rounds (pellets) fall on my target. Not much for the "fliers" that could harm an innocent. Going with a quality round/ shell, combined with knowing my firearm keeps the safety rating at maximum. Thanx 4 the vid!
yeahh i was about to say those standard 410 rounds would be great for the ranch.
What's the difference in effectiveness of the A.C.P. vs. the G.A.P. which I believe is a little shorter but I've never used that round?
Dam, the Hornady is amazing. Thank you for posting.
I learned a lot..Great video...Thanks
Great video, very informative. Thanks !
Thanks for the learning experience. I shoot all the disciplines, but shoot .12ga shotgun (Trap) every week. Just learning about .410 gauge. Thank you. Ed Pasco
My buddy shot a whitetail running away from him during a party drive and has that 12 pointer mounted above his fireplace 😂
Great video. Like hornady critical defense or federal 00buck
If you shoot that #6 load right in some one's face/neck area you will stop the threat because nobody wants to get shot twice. Good testing as it helped to see the patterns of them first couple shots.
Don't do it. If you blind your attacker, plan on being sued. Far better to either take him out permanently if justified, or at least don't maime him.
Thank you for testing.
It's cheaper to use some 45 ACP JHP ammo instead of the shotgun defense rounds. And also cheaper to practice with 45 ACP FMJ bulk ammo.
That’s the advantage the Governor has over the Judge, (that and a extra rd) can’t shoot the 45acp in the Judge. At least not mine you couldn’t.
Outstanding video! Are you able to review the Smith and Wesson Judge?
It’s a Taurus Judge. No, I don’t have one. Similar to the Governor, but it holds one less round, accepts 3” shells, and does not have a scandium frame. Plus it’s about $250 cheaper.
The Judge is a Taurus. He did the Smith & Wesson Governor.
That's sure a helluva lot more than a "irritant" =P
Oh, and time stamp for the shot is 7 min 26 second.
Damn wow
I really like the hornady for my gun I just really like the load it works great I think that’s what I’m going to stock up
Enjoyed your video I thought was very informative
The Governor has a tighter pattern than the Judge. And I agree the shells with bird shot aren't that affective except at point blank range.
Pdx1 combining the bbs is for soft tissue like a neck and face or eyes.
The pdx BB is to cause shock ! The #6 shot works very well if you hit the face. And snakes don't much like it either.
That intruder better be wearing eye protection, bc that #6 will blind them.
The Federal 000 Buck is the best by far. Pure devastation.
For shock & awe dragon's
breath works well too though it will probably set your lawn on fire.
In your home is what is called close combat. Just outside hand to hand.
I've been considering one of these for the center storage box of my car, loaded with larger sized bird shot. I think of it as a more potent way of getting someone away from me than pepper spray, rather than a _necessarily_ lethal weapon.
@Red Elite I would only pull a gun on someone if they were doing something that required me to.
Great .one of de best video
.45 acp do not fall into the cylinder. You can shoot it without moon clips but it’s harder to get the cases out.
Those extra BBs you were wondering about ,what would they do?, they would have given them the ouchies!!
I have those recommended three for my Howdah pistol and the federals at 6-7 yards gives a four finger spread on target. Also the Hornady hits hard
The difference in the first two rounds weren't necessarily the brand. The "defense" branded ammunition is all subsonic garbage. Buckshot .410 is for hunting and is basically 12 gauge 000buck but only 3 rounds instead of 9.
410 handgun buckshot is proven to be lethal to a human in a single shot. It exceeds FBI standards for terminal performance too.
It looks like Hornady and Federal is the way to go.
I carry the Governor for walking in the swamps and woods of NC. I generally carry field load #8 for snakes.
My question is, if I come upon bipedal predators, what's the best 45LC/ACP load it can handle?
I would choose the Federal for sure
What about .410 dragon’s breathe for home defense? Helps out at night if you don’t have a flashlight.
Federal and Hornady all the way!
I'm looking for maximum permissible 45LC loads. Have you tested that? Not so much interested in 410
Nice presentation
I only use federal triple odd buck in my governor.
Spread tests and penetration tests? What’s not to like?
The pdx pellets scare the bejesus out of the assailant. He doesn't know how hard he's been hit and fear in him rises.
The goal IMO is not to frighten the assailant... it's to stop him immediately.
@@authorizeduser9762 ok but if you have a good aim you would still kill him, the pellets are a conciliation prize. If you have limited time every shot must count, regardless of damage. So, the probability is expanded.
I'm thinking 1 vs 6 guys

My Governor would lock up when I shot Hornedy Critical Defense , the cylinder would just lock up I them sent it back to S & W they changed the cylinder and extractor pin.i got it back and it still does it. I love the gun but, I'm going to buy another one.
@@peterdelios663 Has to be "high brass" shells or they will jam every time.
Chris which brands of high brass 410 do you recommend???
@@peterdelios663 Brand like federal makes both types of shells. You just need to make sure you get the right type. Usually "defense" rds have the higher brass and all the 45LC rounds work without too much issue. Try searching "high brass vs low brass" either works ok in a 410 shotgun but not true in the governor.
Has anyone had issues with Hornady? Ive had light strikes and jams that required me to take it to a smith. Locked the cylinder in place
Tried the Remington ultimate defender 4 pellet. Worked much better than the hornady from a malfunction standpoint. Shells dropped in and extracted easily. Some light strikes
i love this
Try using the S&W Governor with the 6 inch barrel?
