I owned three brand new Skodas during the 80s. A 120L5, 130LSE and lastly a Favorit. The first two were very reliable and fun to drive. I didn’t like the Favorit, I only bought it because the earlier models were not available here anymore. I kept it a year then sold it and bought a Lada, very pleased with it. Great video.

It was fun to watch this promo video and see how many extras the UK consumers had. As DJkayoo said, you never got these here in eastern countries, where this car originally came from. Here in Hungary you could hardly manage to chose the color of your car and you waited years for it even if you had the money. I have a Skoda Fabia combi (2007) nowdays and I really like it. Back then my parents had a Lada 1200S. Good old days. :)

True; I had an Estelle 2nd hand before I had the Estelle 2, which had great handling. It was predictable and could be pushed if you knew how. You have to admit though that they do still have some character despite the VW take over. I had a Favorit in '92 and am now 20 odd years later looking forward to my new Octavia.

    • @datathunderstorm

I had 4 rear engined Skoda’s in my personal fleet. The first was an “A” Reg 1983 Super Estelle 120LE, Red / Orange colour with the snazzy air-dam bumpers and those spider alloys, code named “FOXBAT” (after the Mig-25 obviously).
I added a colour coded whale tail spoiler I picked up at a boot sale for £1.00. It cost me £50 to have it sprayed!
The 2nd was a Light Blue 1984 “A” Reg Estelle 120L, bought for scrap value with a blown head gasket engine, for £30. The ancient engine from FOXBAT went into it when that car was written off (not my fault - got a handsome insurance payout - more than the £595 I paid for it in 1989).
This Estelle (code name: Voyager) also inherited FOXBAT’s whale tail (resprayed of course). It also gained alloys from an F Reg Estelle - and the whole interior from the same accident vehicle from a breakers yard. I had fun upgrading the interior seats, carpets, door panels and even the dashboard cluster which was literally plug and play!
Then there was “Cappuccino” - a Black E Reg Skoda Rapid 130G Coupe that must have been flooded by sea water at some point. Bought it for £300, had the brake hoses and pipes ALL replaced due to unusual rust, and from a breakers yard, also replaced the boot and bonnet with cream coloured parts - hence the name “cappuccino”. When Cappuccino was written off (again, not my fault - great payout and I got to keep the car), the 1.3L engine was transplanted into Voyager, making it a 1984 1.2L Super Estelle with a 1.3L engine - but sadly a 4 speed gearbox.
The last Skoda was a 1988 Thunderstorm Grey Rapid 130G with It’s engine already bored by a previous owner to 1.4L (don’t ask!). This Rapid Coupe was dubbed “The Millennium Falcon” due to the sleek shape of the body, and the cargo compartment in front of the vehicle. Driving M F was a blast! My wife drove “Voyager” and I had the “Millennium Falcon” concurrently. It was easily the best of the entire fleet! I eventually traded up to a cheap Honda Accord from a friend, and passed the M F to my sister who eventually ran it into the ground.
The last Skoda to survive in the fleet was “Voyager” who was eventually rear ended at a Zebra crossing (my wife got a total of £2,000+ compensation for that). Even with a staved in rear end, Voyager still flew!
My wife ended up in a Renault Clio Mk1 and I drove “Voyager” to my local Skoda dealer to be scrapped.
I cried all the way there, actually stopping twice to sob my eyes out.
Then broke down in tears again when handing over the keys - much to the amusement of my Skoda dealership - who really did understand how much I’d come to love those cars. I’d been with them for 10 years!! Thanks Empire Motors!
Yes, I still miss my Estelle and Rapid Skodas. They were lovely cars, and served my young family very well indeed. 🥲

Compare that with British Leyland cars, built with cheap steel that corroded quickly. In 1986, my Sister bought a 'B' reg Metro, from the previous year. After 2 years, she got rid of it. Rust on the front wings, on the 'spoiler' under the front of the car, bottoms of doors, the list was endless.
Or the true story, from the 1970's, where the engine of a 'brand new' Marina fell out (on the way back from being bought at the showroom!), as only half of the required engine mounting bolts had been put in.The dealer didn't want to know. One good reason for the 'Sale of Goods Act' 1979.
Even the 'old' Skodas were good cars, certainly better than Lada's.
When it's minus 25c outside and your £70,000Range Rover refuses to start, as the electrics are b*ggered because of the cold, your old Lada/Skoda or Yugo would start 1st time. Also make a better job of the roads.
The Yugo and Skoda held their values better than the Lada or FSO cars.

Totéž kola z lehkých slitin "Jupiter" a později "Apollo", Meteor" a další typy. U nás byly pouze "Otvíráky", ty byly made in ČSSR. Totéž koženková úprava střechy.

jj tak to vypadá že škoda měla v UK další továrnu , která musela ty staré škodovky dodělat aby je vůbec někdo kupoval , a i přes to o nich dělali mnohé vtipy . O tom si mohl československý zákazník nechat leda zdát. on si musel vše dodělat doma. taky se tomu říkalo Škoda DD - dodělej doma . až na to že se u nás spousta náhradních dílů nedalo vůbec sehnat .
