Crazy: I burn $500 worth of knives to prove that the $68 Gerber Principle could be designed better!

- This video a knife review with a little bit of testing mixed in, and it even includes some modification suggestions. I wanted this knife to be great! Because it’s a budget American product. But the grip rubber coating failed on day one, the edge chipped and the tip broke off on day two. It is a budget knife, I love modifying knives, I just bought a new sand belt machine, and it’s been fun making CZcams videos! So I did not send it back to Gerber, instead I fixed it. Hope you like it.

Can't believe the Gerber hate. I have 3 of them. Two pocket knives and one coffin handle Bowie. Have been using them for around twenty years. They are not my best knives, but they get scary sharp and have not failed even with heavy use.
@@CuttingBoardRx benchmade is going down too. Their prices are ludicrous for what they’re providing.
I took mine on an Appalacian Trail section hike a few years ago. And had I known I would have used the handle for tinder, I would have absolutely used it when nothing else would light! I'm sure this handle feature is not by mistake. Great knife..
Love your channel I appreciate your testing and reviews
An informative and entertaining review. Well done. Thanks for posting.
@@CuttingBoardRx Very kind of you to say. I'm neither clever or ambitious enough to entertain such a notion. I'm glad your content came up on my feed, I'm highly impressed. Unique, unpredictable, fun and educational.
Great knife!
Nice jungle extraction. 🔥. Great work.
Oh wow they made build in firestarter to your knife
First caveat, i don’t like this knife really so it lives in my car. But I’ve not had any issues with the handle in a hot car in the southern sun. Handle rubber feels just fine to me .
Flammable handle 😂
Gave up on gerber 15 years ago ! Never looked back !
I don’t buy much gerber, however I do like my gerber minimalist. No great steel but it took a shaving edge and I put snap buttons on the sheath and it buttons to my belt. Always there if I ever needed it in a self defense situation. Probably never. Edit-- it’s a crkt haha. I don’t own one gerber. Heck it’s been so many years I forgot the brand.
All these knife manufacturers should watch your videos to learn something
Its design by committee that places our society
Great work as always. 👍👍
The issues are a shame because the handle and blade profiles and the 420HC are nearly perfect for a small utilitarian blade. Really one of the best small utility/bushcraft knife designs on the market and one of the best budget steels. I'd expect this extremely tough steel to roll before it chips when taking reducing the edge angle, especially at or below 60HRC. One of the reasons I don't recommend this knife in spite of the great design (sheath aside) is because of the reportedly inconsistent heat treatment from Gerber. A maximum of 2 point variance is acceptable for a budget knife, but 4 points is completely unacceptable, which is what is reported about Gerber in general.
@@CuttingBoardRx The 440HC family has the best wear-resistance/toughness balance of any non-powder steel. AEB-L and 13C28N are also in this family, among others, and best at 60-62. I'm not a fan of scout carry, if I wanted to be stealthy with a small fixed blade, it'd go in my front pocket, so long as I am certain it would never cut through the sheath and into my leg.
@@kevinmc1111 I personally think the sort of cross draw on your front works best on those sideways sheaths especially if its slightly at angle instead of completely straight. Carrying kmife behind your back seems really odd to me, and if its in center of your back i think it could hurt you really badly if you fall on it
I'd rather buy the Izula 2 from Esee than this. Such a disappointment to see how little Gerber really put into this design
@@CuttingBoardRxmeh. There are a ton of makers that make a better knife than an Izula around this size.
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸American made! Yeah! Quit worrying about where my money was used according to US made. In 1973 I purchased a Ford Gran Torino that had a Cleveland engine at 53,000 miles the engine failed. After many rounds at the Ford Dealership who did all oil changes with hours spent in their waiting room getting the run around, I had a friend help me rebuild engine. Gave the car to a young couple in church. Bought my first Toyota! And the rest is history. Now for this video I like my Mora Finland knives of Carbon steel, very easy to sharpen with the Scandi grind. All knives under $80.00 and under and no knife can compare to use. So if you want to spend $200-$500 to collect and simply admire in a glass case, go for it. Me, well I’m too practical, if I can’t use it, I don’t need it.
Last time i tried scout carry, I wound up getting a kizer harpoon stuck in my asscheek.
Damn.
Really good review 🔥
Appreciate it! Especially since it was my first full length video I ever posted.
@@CuttingBoardRx it was really informative. I was close to buy this knife ,but I need it to be able to take heat
@@Swedenedc may I recommend Demko Armiger in the same genre? Here’s my Amazon affiliate link to the knife amzn.to/49seTC1

Nice $8 mexican sheet
1st. Indication of flaws ? 1 word... Gerber. 🦉
Why would anyone buy a new knife and spend so much time turning a useless knife into a still useless knife.
@@CuttingBoardRxwhy would you replace an ESSE with this hunk of junk?
Hahaha good job. Nice movie with a pinch of humor. Knifes? hmm.. gerber IMO is not worth the money
The problem started when you decided to buy a Gerber. Time has proven their products are always inferior in quality and materials.
Agreed. It's like a company for....posers.
You obviously never hand or tried any Gerbers so sit down and be quiet.
@@LXT43He’s right.
@@Vpentrovhe’s not
The Strongarm is pretty good for the price
Made in USA🙈🙈🙈😆😆😆
Dude just make your own brand
I stay far away from gerber. Get a joker, esee, ontario, or becker. i e a joker montes 2 or trampero, a rat 3, esee 3 or pr4, bk 19, condor kephart or the like
