- Learn to fly the Hs 129 B-2 in IL-2: Battle of Kuban and be familiar with its cockpit, engine start, takeoff, and landing procedures. Various engine limitations, combat use, important airspeeds, and notes on flying the Hs 129 are also included.
Comments and feedback are always welcome, so if this video helped you out hit the like button and let me know in the comments below. Cheers!
Just wanted to make a quick comment about the landing procedure: the original German manual says to set the engines to max RPM once glideslope speed is reached (200-180 kmh), in order to be able to go around if the landing has to be aborted. I've tried this a few times and have found it to work well.
Yeah very true Luke, regardless of the airplane you should always remember to have RPM fully forward when on final as your airspeed drops in case of a go around. I learned the acronym GUMPS to go over on the base leg before landings (Gas Undercarriage Mixture Prop Seatbelts/Switches) to make sure you are squared away before landing.
Where would I be without these videos... thank you man!
I was doing donuts for days on takeoff . I finally figured it out . Go full power right from the start .No need for brakes as video suggests.Stay off the rudder just apply brakes as needed.Once up to speed near end of runway drop flaps to 35% . Still takes a bit of practice but a hell of a lot easier as other videos have suggested .
Great video loaded with important information for flying this bird .Thanks and subscribed
Hey it's all good Neil, whatever you can get to work for you! I try to replicate things from their manuals but all pilots have their own techniques so if it works then stick with it. The duck has always struck me as having a bizarre takeoff behaviour in Il-2 to be honest. It just doesn't make sense to me why it does what it does on takeoff. Be sure to check out the videos in the "Weapons Employment Guides" I have showing how to use it for level bombing and strafing, they should help too. czcams.com/play/PLnyigzFtHeNooN19kyhiT2UqojQPacCcE.html
thx, this helped me. I was trying to takeoff the correct way but always ended with a spinning plane. Using your way I cold take the thing off the ground
That's the problem Ive always had and i have played every single plane on il2 since the day it came out back in the older days and the new days, lol, its almost like this plane needs a tailwheel lock, as soon as i start flying its doughnut central,im gonna try your way.
It surely quacks at the right hands!
I see what you did there! :P
I love this plane on IL2. Other simulators have made this plane hard to fly and even worse for shooting at the enemy. On IL2, it is a nice reliable platform. Great plane. Very impressed with it.
Yeah it's absolutely a lot of fun. By using the manual prop control you can really get the most out of it. It can take out a lot of targets with the amount of ammo it can carry in some loadouts.
PHEW!! I was having awful trouble with this little beaky bird!! Thanks for this one Req!! Onward and upward into a Career with it...
It's a lot of fun to fly. I barely get it to fly it though since it's a Luftwaffe airplane and that side usually already has plenty of players.
Very helpful, thank you for taking the time to make these videos.
One thing I thought I would add just because I think it's interesting is taxiing this aircraft is unlike taxiing most others in the sim in my experience so far. This aircraft seems more unstable in the yaw axis on the ground, so deviances from a straight heading will tend to get worse over time and eventually become impossible to correct. This aircraft also has poor low speed rudder authority so taking off can be tricky. I have found that holding full aft stick while on the ground can help a lot with this, I guess the downforce increases tail wheel drag or something. It's possible I've only observed this tendency with this aircraft to this degree because it lacks a locking tail wheel, but it makes taxiing tricky at first, then a unique challenge.
The Hs129 always struck me as being wrong in it's ground handling. The props rotate in opposite directions so I don't understand why it pulls to one side during takeoff.
@@RequiemsACTL Yeah the wheels don't seem that much further ahead of the c of g than any other aircraft. It doesn't seem like it should have exceptionally strange ground behaviour.
Another quality vid. Think I better get Kuban, just for this and the map. Looks great.
Cheers Aretard, the Kuban map is easily my favourite one. It looks amazing. You wouldn't regret buying it :-)
Thank you for this...been having so many issues with this plane but this answers so many questions!
Hey you're welcome! Glad to help :-)
The video sound is pretty good, beyond my imagination
Requiem: Thanks again for all of these, maybe particularly this one. So far my experience with the plane has been less smooth than Michael Foreman's (below). Maybe because my control setup is over-complicated for this plane. I have gotten it into the air (WarThunder takeoff, I'm sorry to say) and have several observations:
"Pitch" - IL2 uses the same keyboard commands for "pitch" and "RPM". The difference is that "RPM" can be mapped to an axis, "pitch" apparently not. Could be because (although both control pitch) planes with "RPM" control have a governor linkage to the carburetor/fuel injection whereas those with just "pitch" do not. I have a three-axis (light plane) throttle, with (apparently) just "RPM" bound to the middle axis. Have to use the keyboard commands for this plane.
On a related note - Manifold pressure set to 1.1 ATA puts me in "combat" with 2,800 RPM in automatic pitch. Pulling it out of "combat" requires reducing the throttle to the point where the plane won't stay in the air. Setting throttle to 1.1 ATA and pitch to bring the engines to 2,350 RPM gets me out of "combat" and the plane flies faster. . . But I may have bolluxed up the controls in my attempts to wrest control away from the forces of random.
Hey Guard, if you control pitch manually like the pilot's notes refer to then you won't have problems maintaining airspeed. I use buttons for RPM up/down and I use the same buttons for pitch changes if that helps.
Good idea. . . I think the Gnome-Rhone became a Troll-Rhine when it went into a German plane. (Petain's revenge.) Starting to like this plane. . . Jockeying pitch and throttle seems easier than the P-40 but not as easy as the P-39. Big difference is I can't control pitch with my RPM axis, and the RPM gauges are out on the engines. Finding some non-conflicting keys to dedicate seems like the best compromise.
I like this plane, in the air. Slower than the Sturmovik and bomb options are crap, but the guns are about as good and it is a really stable strafing platform. (And with the mirror you get some idea of what is happening behind you.)
I think the trick is to takeoff is to get some rudder authority as soon as possible. Stand takeoff helps, but for my best takeoff so far I left the flaps raised until I picked up some speed. (I do this with the Sturmovik also when I have it really loaded up.)
My prediction - you will never have a problem grabbing a Duck on multiplayer servers where it is available. (Like the Sturmovik.) And you won't get bounced by Focke-Wulfs and Messerschmitts (well, not often). Have to see how tough it is - seems a bit more Flak-resistant than the Sturmovik.
What Prop pitch should I have for takeoff?
Edit: I figured it out.
Prop pitch has an effect on the rpm, thats why drehzahl is written next to the switches.
Having a high prop pitch creates a lot of air resistance and makes it harder for the engine which decreses its rpm.
Lowering the prop pitch to its minimum position has the effect that you get higher rpm.
The Automatic mode uses the pitch to keep the rpm under 2700 rpm which prevents the engine from destroying itself.
For take off, having a low prop pitch is beneficial because:
1) a low prop pitch makes it more efficient to gain speed from being stationary
2) It causes a higher rpm which leads to that it can move more air per second and propell the aircraft with a greater force forward.
I found a document which states that the rpm should be at 3030 on take off.
Spot on
Think of the propeller as a screw
If the thread is fine (more frequent with less space between) it's easier to screw in but you'll need a lot of turns with a screwdriver
If the thread is coarse (less frequent with more space inbetween) you'll need less turns to screw it in but you'll need a significantly bigger force to turn it
And since the propeller is basically a screw with very short threads, this made me understand it much easier
@@atoka2206 that is a good analogy
Great tutorial Requiem. Took me ages trying to figure out the button set up for this one but this helped me no end. That boost button is very important :). Is the cooling fully automated? I don’t seem to be able to manually operate rads at all. Could they be air cooled?
Yeah I believe the cooling is automatic
A small correction, the MK 103 has faster rate of fire than the 101, almost double if i'm correct. Having more ammo more or less gives it similar firing time. The projectiles fired are the same
Super Étendard Yeah thats correct I messed up with the text, bugger! I distinctly remember checking the differences too so thats a dumb mistake on my part.
Very informative but since the tech chat is OFF and non clickable cockpits it makes the educational value somewhat limited. Shame if you are a beginner trying to learn exactly what pilot is doing.
Other than that, quality content.
Thanks for the feedback Ytseman. I do try to mitigate that problem by talking through what I'm doing in the plane while I'm doing it, as I do when instructing in RL. I can see the usefulness of tech chat during the start up, but like you said since it's not clickable it kind of defeats their purpose anyway. Personally, I don't like to have the tech chat up in the tutorial videos as I think they can create a bad habit in thinking of settings such as flaps, RPM, throttle, etc only in terms of % instead of their actual known values.
Thanks for another great guide! one of the only Axis planes i've seen using mixture controls so far.. one question, is there a Elevator/Rudder trim indicator? or do you just hold the switches and rely on the physical feedback you get. Thanks!
Yeah I don't think there is an indicator...just trim to take away control pressure as needed
Love the video man.
One thing I can't find the answer to that you may know.
What's the red lines on the left window of the cockpit and what are they used for?
Hey Nicholas, those lines will tell you your dive angle just like in the Stuka. So if you start a dive and check which line is parallel with the horizon it will tell you what your dive angle is.
Thank you.
I haven't flown the Stuka yet.
Thanks!
Question: If the aircraft has counter rotating props, why does it pull to the left?
I've wondered it myself and can't explain why.
I wonder if they accidentally forgot to account for it - maybe they used the Bf 110/He 111/Ju 88 handling characteristics, which all share the left pull (I think). The torque should have been cancelled out, prop wash over the empennage the same, so really the only differential should be any external asymmetrical differences. Definitely a headscratcher.
Hey, so first of all, nice and helpfull video, great job.
I am new on this channel and I really like it, but I also plan on buying one of the IL-2 games (Either BoS, BoM or BoK), and I would like to know if there is any specific difference between the games as they came out at different dates, or if the choice is only a pure matter of preference between the planes and the context. I am a DCS player and I also play Cliff of Dover sometimes but I don't know anything about this new IL-2 serie and I'm very intersted about it.
Thanks
Hi Robin, thanks very much :-) I have DCS and Cliffs as well.
BoS/BoM/BoK are essentially just like you said. It's just about the planes and context for their use. For a bit more detail, any planes you own can be flown in MP or SP, but you can play any of the maps in MP. SP however is restricted to playing on only the maps you own. There are usually sales on relatively often, so I'd say pick the planeset you would enjoy flying the most and then wait for a sale to grab the others. They are well worth it.
I’ll probably do that then, thank you very much for the help :D
One of the great things about the 1CGS (the devs for IL-2) is that they have done a good job of keeping the entire portfolio up to date. Battle of Stalingrad came first but all of the additions to the series have improved Stalingrad as much as it has the other titles. The official IL-2: Battle of Kuban release is coming soon but also contained in that patch is an upgrade for the old IL-2: Battle of Stalingrad map (the first to be added to the series) so that it looks better with the 4x increase in draw distance. It's great to see them go back and make sure that the older content is still excellent.
Good video, but do you have any idea what the mixture settings are for? Is it auto at those settings like a P-40?
Hey Kai, yeah those are automatic mixture settings.
Start - Use for engine start
Rich - Combat, Take off, and Landing
Normal - Taxiing, Cruise
Clickable cockpits in Great Battles would make it so much more interesting.
oh now i know why my german planes go left in simulator battles... i have never done 10 and increasingly up the speed.. i just went for 100% cuz thats in the tutorial lol and i play the game for 2 years
At 3:27 you state that the MK103 has more ammunition with slower rate of fire, but the notes in the game say that the MK101 is 250 RPM, and MK103 is 400RPM. Is there any benefit to the MK101?
That was a typo on my end, the in-game notes are correct. I don't think there is that much benefit to taking the Mk101 over the Mk103 as they're pretty much the same thing just with a different operating of firing. I think the only benefit is that muzzle velocity is a bit higher in the Mk101, so I'd always take the Mk103.
Thanks for the vid, but with which button i select start position for flaps?
Just use the regular flaps key, but press it once and don't hold it down.
@@RequiemsACTL thanks for the hint. A question for starting and cruising prop pitch: set to 100? Would be cool if we can see what you set in the vid.
My engine keeps shutting off half the time on the runway for no apparent reason. Any idea why? Could it be a bug with the new update?
Somehow I did a perfect takeoff on my first try, adding myself..."why is everyone having such a hard time on takeoff?" But then my 2nd and 3rd times were failures.
Nevermind, just realized I had my mixture lever down to the 0% position.... not used to using mixture controls. Got myself taking off again. Thanks as always to your videos! Anytime I fly a new plane in this game, I go straight to your tutorial videos.
Great to hear you sorted it out John, the Duck can be a tricky bird to take off that's for sure.
Any Chance of an Combat Tutorial for this Plane?
I have one for level bombing under review at the moment and the ground strafing one will be voiced over tomorrow.
@@RequiemsACTL Watched it allready just the HS dont has such markers :-)
I can't help but feel like you're flying a box when sitting in the cockpit
A heavily armoured box! :-) But the view definitely sucks lol
amazing half the tutorial showing things i cant click on lol
How to use the gun sight of hs129? Notice those 4 'flap thing' on the left side of gun sight(for bomb dropping?)
That's the bombing sight, I've had requests to make a video on that so I'll be doing one. In a nutshell when you line up on the target the four flat pieces of metal tell you when to drop bombs when your altitude is either 10, 50, 100, or 200m above ground with an airspeed of 300km/hr
@@RequiemsACTL Thanks! Looking forward, always high quality video.
