Hey sir nice post. I can remember being surprised about 30 years ago when I bought a S-K 1/2 ratchet for are store and it was like 50 bucks. Not any more and it's not mine it has always work well. So my driver recently offered me a one time deal on a 1/2 set, at first i said no ty, a Snap-on set is pricey, but I took a close look and the set did come with two ratchets so I bought it, the ratchets alone are worth over 300. Bucks a standard and a long, they are great, and with the 5 extension, metric sockets I think I did real well

Yes tools are much better deals when you buy them in sets. I have bought sets just to get a few specific items and then sold the remainder of the sets just to save money

Kolbolt sells a 1/2 compact head ratchet just like the duralast made by the same compact that makes the stubby powertourq with the squaredrive in the handel

I just started working more on my cars because things have been breaking on them. I don't have a lot of tools myself so I use my dad's Craftsman 1/2 inch. I decided to get me one larger ratchet so I don't take his and it was the 1/2 flex head you mention. I got a small Craftsman tool set I bought years ago but the 3/8 ratchet just didn't give me enough leverage. I got tired of trying to take out bolts so I just went for the big one. No more fighting with most bolts now. I also got their long soft grip breaker bar and their impact sockets. I feel much better now. What a difference a larger ratchet makes. I'm thinking of getting the extendable that has a 1/4 and 3/8 on the same head. Do you have any experience with it. I have those two in the Craftsman set but really like the longer part. I just thought the handle moved too much when extended though. So I'm not sure how good that ratchet might be.

Yes the discovery of half inch a wonderful thing. I would stay away from the extending handle ratchets just because when they get karate the locking mechanism on the handle doesn't work very well. The double-sided ratchets are not popular because they having the Anvil sticking out of the back side causes it to interfere in a lot of situations

Catus, you should do a video like this on your large ratchets. 3/4 and 1in..

Keep up the good work buddy! You should do a vid on lubing a Pittsburgh 3/8 swivel head ratchet. The green handle not the flex head. I can't figure out how to get that sucker open

    • @CatusMaximus
      @CatusMaximus  Před 6 lety +1

I believe that ratchet is permanently assembled and is held together by the ratchet pawls themselves I will see if I can take it apart and make a video

Catus Maximus maybe just soak it in trans fluid if need be i guess

Jared Milkyway I have the gearwrench and pittsburg versions of the roto ratchets. The gearwrench ones have a small recessed lip with a split ring I can remove. The pittsburg I tried to pry up to see but theres not much room to access a split ring. There has to be one but accessing would take great force. soaking in oil sounds like best option or warranty out at HF.

If you had to choose, would you go with an 1/2 or 3/8? Please explain why

  • @ronprice1819

That compact head duralast ratchet is the same design as ones being sold as Blackhawk. I have a Blackhawk 3\8 that I'm sure is the same. Also I have a performance tools 1\4 that seems to be the same as well. I think they are tawain made. Usually the better asian made tools are always from Taiwan... Probably why china wants to invade them.. haha

Be careful! Some of these ratchets are deliberately built exclusive to the brand.
Have you measured where the ball mounts into the socket?
Some socket extensions have hidden magnets built into them.

Have you heard of RETRO tools? Think craftsman ratchet.
Which ones are ‘the latest Technology’ and which are deliberately NOT the latest.

Pittsburgh Pro is the way to go, too bad they stopped making them, or most of them, and maybe even cut down the quality, not sure as I've got the older Pittsburgh Pro stuff, the stuff that made Harbor Freight a giant in the tool market. I'd put my, old, Pittsburgh Pro tools against any tool truck tool that costs many times more.
