Setting the scene: Male, age 70. During Covid I got fat, and I have arthritis in both knees. It hurt to stand. It hurt to begin to walk. It hurt getting in and out of the car. Fast forward with exercise, weight loss. I walk about a mile every day. I attend aerobics and Zumba classes. Pain is there, but pretty much gone most of the time. No longer hurts to stand, to walk, to get in and out of the car. The psychic benefits are there as well, healthy body, healthy mind. Work at being and staying positive. I should mention, too, I was pre-diabetic and going that way -- now that's all gone. What these guys say is true. Long time viewer and (obviously) endorser. Are things perfect? Nope. But I've seen people go down the road of anger, depression, self-pity, self-medication and at my age, RIP. Lesson: Hang in there. Use it or lose it, and work at happiness. It just doesn't happen. Excelsior!

My hips and back were tight…I thought I had sciatica as I had pain on one side of buttocks. I found a therapist on CZcams that recommended the yoga frog pose. I tried it on the bed as I couldn’t get down on the floor. To my surprise not only did it resolve the tightness in my hips and back but reduce my knee pain. I had severe pain in my knees when walking or going up and down the stairs. I tried all kinds of exercises and stretches but nothing worked. I thought I would need knee replacement and given up any hope of healing without drugs or surgery. That’s why I couldn’t believe how quickly the yoga frog pose fixed my knee, hip and back pain. I have to add that when I first did the frog pose, I couldn’t even do one…it was very uncomfortable and I realized how tight my hip flexors were. I kept doing it, in the morning and night and throughout the day when possible. I was able to stretch for longer and deeper with frequency and the relief in my knees, hips and back was almost immediate …especially my knees. I couldn’t believe it!! I’m about 90-95% better now. It’s like a miracle. I’m now back to going for walks daily and no issues going up and down the stairs. I’m so grateful, I found this stretch on CZcams. My advice is stretch your body and try different stretches because you don’t know what may work for you. Stretching is not just good for our muscles, it also helps our joints. I’m now back to stretching and exercising again. Good luck!

Have you looked into infrared light therapy panels or pads? If you go to a reputable company (check out Alex Fergus on YT) there he analyzes the various companies he has panels for. He offers discounts you can use. He like the panels over the pads. I prefer the pads as I can use them while lying in bed and it helps me to fall asleep.
Anyway, 9 months back, I was diagnosed with arthritis in my right hip. Arthritis being inflammatory, affected my IT band muscles and nerves all around my knee. Pain was 7. It hurt to walk. I was limping.
Bought a red light/infrared therapy pad, used it 2× 30 minutes, every night and after 3 weeks of that, joint, knee and IT pain were virtually gone.
Now, it's not any cure, of course, I can't briskly walk without hurting after awhile but I can walk normally without any pain pills or steroid shots! I garden and don't have any issues, either.
If/when the pain comes back, I just go back to the therapy pad.
Eventually surgery will be needed but it's on my schedule.
Therapy pads can range in price. Shop around but 1st research red light/infrared light therapy to see how it can work for you.
I recently bumped my elbow into a door jam while walking past and saw stars (💥🤯💥)Sat down, used my therapy pad for about 1 hour, put ice on it for 20 minutes. I went to bed with only slight arm pain, next day no pain at all and no black & blue mark either.
There is something miraculous about what infrared light does on a molecular level.
It just works. Check it out.
I use mine at full level light and multiple times. I have no patience with lasting pain. So feel free to experiment. You really can't overdue it.

MRI with contrast will show arthritis. I went through a year of PT until they told me we can do no more for you, your pain is too great. Same with my chiropractor. Went to pain management. They gave me cortisone shots. Nothing, second time I was in so much pain by the Friday after the shots on Monday. Went to ER. Told them Dr. sent me. Gave ne something to calm the pain finally did an MRI with contrast, then they sent me to Neurosurgeon, I had a lower back fusion 2 weeks later.
What I learned: take boswelia mega doses in the am. My sciatic came back, she wants to fuse my SI Joint. I decided to call around and see what else could control the pain. Boswellia did the trick, it is natural and takes a while to get you to the point of close to no pain. I am not ready to be all metal. My body seems to try and reject foreign objects on or in it. That can be a mess!

One way of doing the soft knee walking is to march, with the knees getting to 90 degrees (high knee marching)... I may still have knee pain from uneven ground or my doggies pulling, but while I look silly, the knee pain mostly goes away... back to my marching band days.... 8 steps every 5 yards with high knee marching.

Unfortunately his knee is very painful, unable to bear full weight. Had started PT but surgeon asked to postpone. Getting an MRI knee, he has no arthritis. He uses your walking videos, hopefully it's just a mobility issue. I will update results of MRI after the 27th follow up appt.

I am not allowed to get on the floor, even at my PT's office. I fell several times last year and was unable to get up by myself.
Even though we have been working on improving my leg strength, no one is willing to chance putting me in a "get up off the floor " situation.
My legs are much stronger now. A couple of weeks ago, I was able to step up on a 16-inch high box and then step down 100 times. When I started, I could only do that on a 6-inch high box 20 to 30 times.
I do hold on to parallel bars when stepping on the box, and when I start to tire, I put more and more of my weight on my hands and arms.
I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis in both my hips in March 2023. I have never had pain in the joints, only the leg muscles. It has diminished as my legs have gotten stronger. PT can work wonders.

I think I may have found “Running Board Knee” as a source of knee pain. Recently I started driving our “tank” which is taller than our van and has a running board to step up on to enter it. I grabbed the handle with my right hand, put my left foot on the running board, pulled myself up and put my right foot on the running board. Turning to sit in the seat a slight twinge was felt in the left knee. It occurred to me that this could be the source of my knee pain. I modified how I entered our tank (Ford Expedition) to eliminate the rotary motion. In two days the knee felt better but not well. I’m about a week in now and it is feeling even better still. Not ready to definitively say the running board is the cause but sometimes “post hoc ergo propter hoc!”

My mom was referred to a very good physical therapist for what I believe to be back pain that was radiating down her legs. He disagreed with me and gave her knee exercises and asked her to get x-rays. The x-rays were absolutely excruciating to get done and then she did the exercises and her knees swelled up like a balloon! She was in horrible pain for several months after that and never went back! In the meantime she continued to have Mobility problems with her back so I was right from the get-go

My images when I was in my forties showed severe osteoarthritis, bone on bone, plus severe in my hands as well; both parents had bad arthritis also. The ortho doc couldn't believe that I didn't have much pain, but that was the truth. I worked on losing a lot of weight and doing exercises which staved off severe pain for 30 more years. I did have both knees done in the past two years, but if I had done it back then, they probably would have needed to be replaced again by now.

The goal is to decrease the risk of stumbling and falling. I have knee arthritis but i am more concerned about falling and breaking bones than having knee pain. Seems PT CAN make some things better at the expense of other things.

I was an imaging professional turned PT. I agree with some of the informations presented here but disagree with the way this message is being delivered to other PT professionals. Imaging despite it “occasionally” not being as accurate in predicting symptoms still can provide a lot of information that affects a PTs interventional approach, prognosis and goals. It still yields plenty of consistencies in symptoms ( if not, then it should be eliminated from the entire medical profession) Currently this presentation can be misconstrued by many PTs as perceiving medical imaging as unimportant and unnecessary in their practice. unfortunately in my practice i have seen this phenomenon way too common from other practicing PTs. I have noticed/ experienced firsthand many mistakes that were made by PTs during prognosis and intervention because they simply dismisses the importance/ and value that a medical imaging can add to their understanding of the patients condition. Unfortunately the way this info is being conveyed about medical imaging causes a lot PTs to disregard imaging as an important piece of their informational gathering. Their attitude tends to sway in the other extreme of not placing medical imaging as one of the important information to obtain / and recognise its value.

I have a question about whether or not I can increase the amount I can bend my knee. Currently it hurts my 66 yr old knee to bend more than about 90% degrees when loaded with my weight. Not such thing as a yoga squat! Can I push that. I’m sure I have some arthritis, but do exercise regularly.

How i wish my knee would bend that far to stretch. I cannot bend either knee back past seated in a chair. The inside of both knees..all cartilige gone. 4 months of PT made pain worse. Now i have constant nerve pain, inside the knee below that cap. Anything i can do now?

I hope PT works for you. I had an Xray before PT so atleast I knew what was wrong. The PT my insurance told me to go to was useless. 6 times I went. I was on my back with some sort of moist heat wrap, twice for 10 minutes did some silly side step and the rest of the time did nothing else but rest.
      A total waste of money.
I read too many other ppl same experience.
      Good luck.

Stretching that femoris? I've got arthritis, I'm almost 70, haven't been able to get on the floor, much less one knee on a chair behind me! I can't even imagine doing this, even if I could, I'd go into a cramp that would throw me on the floor!

Why not work on getting rid of arthritis?! Most docs know nothing about nutrition, vitamins, natural ways of getting healthier, changing our diet. If it isn’t an Rx, they are clueless. I really appreciate all the information you and Mike demonstrate to help us. Keep on keeping on!
