Lad, you gotta understand that that was a time, an era. Probably impossible to relive it, or resurrect it. I saw them in 1979 on Breakfast in America tour . I was 27, & to be perfectly honest was kinda disappointed with the sound. Roger didn't seem in the good mood & it showed in his singing. But, after a while things began to pick up to a more charged level that left me leaving satisfied. Have you seen Roger solo-with band- live? I mean before covid? Vy good sound, & sense of Supertramp!

I do wonder how much nore commercially massive this wonderful band would have become if they had continued together. Such fantastic music produced over the years. I first saw them live in 1974 on the Crime of the Century tour and have been a fan ever since. I always loved John's stage presence, humour and quality musicianship. I once got a local radio show to play Hide in Your Shell on their 'rock show' evening programme in the 70's - I couldn't believe they would play such a 'not suitable for commercial radio' tune and I enjoyed every second of it as I still do today.

@@balazsernhaft8337 Well, it's ok that you like Rick and his songs. But it's not ok to blame somebody for something without knowing reasons and to ignore the fantastic success Roger's songs gave Supertramp. I know it's the time of devided society, of only black and white and hate between each other. BUT that is not a way of evolution and success but of failures and degeneration. Although I prefer Rick's songs ( just little bit better than Roger's ), of course Roger had so many fantastic songs . ( but I"m not going to change my opinion on that after his leaving he didn't write amazing songs , at least not at the same level as he used to write it during Supertramp 's period. )
YOu are talking about " black and white " thing
It is totally valid for Roger's fanatic fans , who totally ignore Rick"s role in the band , they leave unfair comments under all videos but they also totally ignore anyone else in the band

I love Supertramp with both Rick and Roger. Have all their albums up until Famous last Words. But Roger left. It happens. It was sad as a fan. Supertramp with both singers was....Supertramp. Roger and Rick had different views on music. Fair enough. But in some perfect way...they complimented each other. Roger's voice on Rick's songs and vice-versa was pure perfection. As a fan we will never know the emotions and reasons truly for the breakup. If by some slight chance they could perform again together it would be incredible. However, they are much older now....very difficult to do any show at their age. And poor Rick he has not been in great health of late. John Helliwell is a fun spirit. He was just fun to watch with his amazing Sax......and I think he truly loved both men. He looks real good here. Well....we shall see. But if not...we have the memories!! To be honest I don't understand how Roger thought this reunion (in 2010 ) I mean he wanted to join to band after several decades but only in case of some shows. He had several booked solo concerts in that time. He wanted to determine the details ( dates , and he wanted to remove Sue , Rick's wife , from the productions ) Rick set up a new band in 1985 ( I mean with several new members ) and a new sound in order to play big arena shows
After it Roger wanted to " steal the shows " in front of several thousands of people ? What John Heliwell should have said in that case: Here is Mr Supertramp , the voice , heart and soul of Supertramp ?? .. because Roger advertises his concerts with these remarks since he left the band...
I know that playing Roger's songs is always will be marginal issue ... , but Roger also use Supertramp's name in order to advertise his concerts . I saw several posters where Supertramp's name was written , little bit , on deceptive way .

You missed off the fact that when they split they agreed to not sing each other's songs, much as I love Rick he couldn't fill a concert hall on his own songs as they were not "hits" to none die hard fans . Brother where You Bound was a great album but after that they are very forgettable. I hardly ever play them but Rogers solo albums I do ... I've been a fan since the 70`s , have the tour posters framed, tour t-shirts and books. If you ask someone if the have ever heard of Supertramp and they say no, reel out a list of Rick songs and they will still say no , then do the same for Roger songs and they will know them ..

@@marcushull12 Sorry but they did not " split " , Roger has left the band . Big difference . I "did not miss" this " agreement " but my personal opinion that it is more than " strange expectation " that Supertramp can not play any Supertramp's songs while dozens of cover bands do it ( John Hellivell mentioned it also )
There was a written agreement ( not verbal ) that Rick receives the Supertramp' s name. Despite of it Roger used this band name in order to advertise his concerts , in several cases deceptively . I think Rick did not " deal with it " too much while Roger did very negative campaign with some unfair interviews ( where he degraded the roles of the band members ), deleted videos from You Tube ( incl several covers from fans ) and he manipulated his fans in order to write their petty , childish comments under all post- Roger Supertramp's videos.( very childish , sorry ) " Forgettable " , it is your opinion but not a fact. Per example I like "Some thing never change " album and this album made several new fans and it was a great success in Europe ( US market is another story , several "old-school" bands were set aside )
I have Roger's albums also ( except Hai-Hai , I found only 1 good song on it ) he wrote some beautiful songs but to be honest his solo albums " good but no amazing " categories . I respect him and his fans so I avoid to use " forgettable " remark . Sorry but I have to say that his solo ' career ' as R. Hodgson was dissapointment , so shame that he doesn't respect his fans with any new song since 2000. I know that he is amazing musician , he has strong and clear voice , but I think as songwriter he caused a dissapointment. I know that several ST fans agree with it .
I'm also a big fan of ST ( the whole band not only Roger's or Rick's ,etc ) but I'm not interested in the hits .
I saw them ( ST without Roger ) twice and only 2-3 songs were played ( which were credited to Roger ) but the 85 % of the setlist belongs to Rick . Despite of it the concerts were amazing and it was also a great success.
Of course it is true that some people always want to listen to " hits " in every concerts . Toto is great band , similar to ST , with hundreds of fantastic songs but the smaller part of the audience always want to hear Africa or Rosanna , again and again. Some " fans " (altough they are not really fans ) know only these songs but I ( and the bigger part of the audience ) know the full and great repertoire of the bands and don't deal with the well-known /hits songs .
Furthemore Roger had to play his Supertramp's songs in order to sell tickets and if " you ask someone if the have ever heard of Roger Hodgson and they say no , reel out a list of his solo songs then they will still say no " .
So well-know song means nothing in itself.

I know that Roger has a clear and very unique voice but personally I'm not a big fan of his high-pitched voice and singing style , because I prefer the masculin and dirty voices .... but it is my personal opinion only. I agree that he was genius , but without the band he was not the same . He promised hundreds of " magical songs " after his departure but he had only cca 30 songs during 40 years .

Not holding my breath, albums don't sell anymore so no one's going to give them good money to do that. Concerts do sell but these guys are old and Rick was very ill. And Roger would likely veto Sue Davis being the manager as he has since they first tried to work together again in...1992 !

His last studio album was released in 2000 so more than 23 years ago. It seems he could earn more money with just touring and playing his old Supertramp songs. For me it is a big dissapointment because he always speaks about his "magical unreleased +60 songs". But nothing arrived. He is amazing of course, but without Supertramp he was not same for me.

Roger left the band in 1983. The band continued without him and after 10 years hiatus( 1987-97) they came back with the STNC which was a great album and success in Europe. So it was the return of the band , it is your problem that you misunterstood it .There was no any words about Hodgson's return so you should have checked it in advance if you are RH fan .

It is also a fact that Roger did not release any well-known songs or hits without Supertramp , during 40 years. 40 years ! . The hitmaker guy has been totally dissapeared . It shows how important was Rick and the whole band , so sad that Roger " built " a fanatic fanbase who totally ignore the band ( band members, producers , etc ) Both songrwiters were a genius and there is no Supertramp without the songs as Rudy , Crime of the century , From now on , Another mans woman , Donwstream , My kind of lady , Bloody well right , Gone Hollywood , Just nervous wreck , and so on ....The key to the success of Supertramp was the band ! Just check the band"s history before 1974 ( without the other classic members and the producer , the first 2 albums were commercial failures and averages music ) and pls see what Roger reached after 1983 . These are the facts.

@@MaterLacrymarum To be honest Rick wrote 4.5 songs on the Crime of C. and Roger 3.5 as Rick also wrote some instrumental parts ( piano solo , harmonica ) of the School .They were equally geniuses but in different ways / styles . Finally the key to the success of the ST was ..the band . Roger and Rick needed John , Dougie and Bog and producers as Ken Scott or Peter Henderson . It is really unfair how Roger deletes the roles of them and sell himself as Supertramp . ( which also means that his solo works weren't successful and enough interestings. )

Folks, it'll never happen. Growing old should provide you a whole deal of wisdom so that you can say 'oh, let's get off of all that crap, we're human beings...', this seems not to be in Rick's or Roger's minds. Or at least their wives...
I mean, both of them are so introverted and stubborn, they still need to be true to their word and probably too much thick, always standing firmly in their wee own backyard.
