🤣
i first saw this movie a few years ago while stoned out of my mind and it was the greatest thing i've ever seen
Thanks for the tip! This is how I will experience it!
This is what I like to HEAR
Acid for full immersion 😉 lmfaooo I did that for moonage daydream 🛸
yes
I have the exact same story only it was 20 years ago ha
This is THE concert film. There are other great contenders, but I’ve never seen such ideas from music be expanded upon live. Can’t wait to see the full version in beautiful 4K!
It's actually a bunch of different shows spliced together
I love this movie too but did you ever see Tom Waits Big Time?
@@darealberrygarciaI think it’s like 3 or 4 different shows put together. It’s still really impressive and It’s definitely one of, if not the best concert film I’ve seen.
@@darealberrygarcianames?
The only thing that comes close is The Last Waltz but SMS is a step above.
I couldn't have asked for a better gateway into Talking Heads than this movie.
It really is a perfect gateway
I remember being 16 and wandering into a huge hangar bay at Woodstock 99 to watch a movie (as Sony had made a HUGE theater out of it). It was called "Stop Making Sense" and some guy walks onto stage with a boombox. I was waiting for a half hour for some plot to happen and then I just fell into the experience. What an interesting excursion from an already interesting event. Was just trying to get out of the hot sun for a minute but I'm glad I stumbled in there!!
Have you heard of The Doublejumps? you might enjoy them if you like Talking Heads
Good to hear someone had a great experience at Woodstock 99
@@grupil I think plenty of us did. I for sure found the fires afterwards quite crazy. I was in the moment and snagged a Jamaraquai t-shirt from a trampled stand 😂
@@AngusAngusGreat choice
That's such an incredible experience
Talking Heads were my first concert in '83 at the age of 14 - saw them about 3 months before this Stop Making Sense show was filmed, so watching this movie takes me back every single time. Can't wait to see this on the big screen once again.
That's awesome. I was born in the 80's and they are my favorite of all time. Hope u enjoy it and gives u much joy
DISLIKE
This concert had the best version of This Must Be The Place
the best love song ever written... i always burst into tears listening to it
I'm there. I was in the theatre for it 40 years ago (I liked their music but wasn't a fan) and was absolutely blown away. Saw it several more times and bought the album.
😂🎉❤😊
That is amazing! I was too young to experience it then unfortunately.
Where was it filmed?
@@sailingsam3815 It was in Hollywood at the Pantages Theatre, 1983. They did a 3-nights gig there and Jonathan Demme filmed all three nights live and put it together.
ikr. 40 years already, time does go by
im happy this is still being appreciated by this many people, it really is the best live album ever
It really is!
I just discovered this movie this past May, on my 47th birthday and it blew me away! I’ve listened to the album every day this summer and I got my IMAX tickets. This film/music is special.
It’s not the best live album. It’s the best concert film. Big difference.
Helps that David Byrne is a proper maniac. Good as he is he doesn't carry the film by himself, oh no. Everybody on that stage were equal partners and made this the most memorable experience ever.
i don't like it
This whole concert was my first introduction to Talking Heads when I watched it as a kid. Changed my life forever. Even my dad went to that exact concert when it was performing at a tennis court. This is such an amazing restoration of the most legendary concert!
Cillian Murphy would be perfect for a role like this.
Or Nicholas Hoult
I wish Cillian Murphy was cast to play Byrne when he was a bit younger looks so similar 😮
I was just thinking that too
Or Bill Nye
I thought it was him in the thumbnail
This was amazing in IMAX. Jerry and whoever he worked with, they remastered that audio to perfection. I'm still getting chills from specifically the surround sound mix of "Heaven", which had the backing singers' chorus lines come from the back of the movie theater like ghosts (or angels) while the David & Tina part was all mixed at the front. Amazing!
Would be worth a lot if they did release the soundtrack in Dolby Atmos on Blue Ray for the Anniversary... but I doubt it the legacy is a quagmire between the band members 😮💨
The audio engineering for the IMAX version was frankly master-tier. Just a fantastic balance across all the musicians.
@@Crazy_Diamond_75 Have seen the IMAX three times now because when will you ever hear it like that again.
@@uxi6434 exactly. I just saw it last night but I'm going again tonight...
I am so fortunate to have been young and alive when this tour happened. It was the greatest concert experience of my life. I've seen the movie numerous times, and I am beyond excited to see it again. We need this more than ever.
Same
Same
Same.
The greatest concert film ever. For me, this kind of filmmaking needs to be brought back.
well A24 is leading the way to bringing them back.
@@kavid8120 a24 is definitely not doing that.
RIP Jonathan Demme
Just saw this in a packed theater in Downtown Brooklyn and it blew my mind. I had heard of the film before but had no idea how great it is. Truly an immortal performance. Pure art.
going to see it (for the first time) tomorrow. Can't wait!
Wow. we saw it earlier this week and we were the only people in the theater. But we live in a music wasteland.
I saw it in a theatre in the Village with my sister. We both had braids at the time and a young kid who sat behind us asked if we were the back up singers from the film.
At the 1min mark it felt like I had been watching this for at least 10 mins it was so trippy
This should be shown once every month for ever, for the new directors and the new bands... Simply legendary..
Cillian Murphy
I was always a fan of Talking Heads as a young lad in the early 1980’s. I had never seen this film but all this time it was always on the back of my brain. A few years ago, I watched it on Tubi or somewhere. I was blown away. What a musician. What an entertainer. What a performance. Just incredible. At the same time I felt, they don’t make music or entertainers like this anymore. This is art on multiple levels and it’s live and in person. Just beautiful and amazing. Oh!! And I’ll bet a ticket to this show cost $20 cash (maybe even less!) and you could pick one up at the same record store where you got all of your cassettes. 😞
I agree that there are a lot of things that change for the worse over time, but it is 150% just untrue that "they don't make musicians and entertainers like this anymore" the sad truth is there are even more multi talented artists then there ever has been, that bring something truly magical and original to the stage or the screen or just to your face on the street, they just get over looked or straight ignored because of the over saturation and lowered attention span of modern day. But the will and work of truly genius and passionate artists is something that will never be gone, even as AI starts infringing on art, the people like him will always keep doing what they do, we just have to keep finding it.
@@cjsdizzyI believe you, but can you name a modern band that’s on the same level as Talking Heads?
@@trashyraccoon2615It’s hard to say something new is as good as talking heads because it hasn’t had the time to age into the legendary status David Byrne has. But one of my favorite newer bands that is innovative and puts on great shows is called Vulfpeck. If you haven’t heard of them, check them out as soon as you can and watch their Madison Square Garden performance.
@@trashyraccoon2615 take a look to IDLES
i'll have to agree with cjsdizzy over here, it's easy to discredit current generations of artist based on the greatest artist of other decades, but that's only because there's so many different people doing so much stuff nowadays. then there's this whole thing about each generation having different sensibilities and trends.
i'm personally quite happy to have been born in the early 2000's, i might not get to enjoy going to some real historic landmarks like this show, but i get to enjoy nonetheless, just as well as every new and amazing thing that's coming out.
honestly, good art is the one thing that will always make me happy to be alive.
This is the best concert film ever made.
Somebody get Cillian Murphy and make the biopic already
Hell yeah - good job A24, giving me my first chance to see this on the big screen!
Same man 👀 A24 do it again 👏👏👏
A24 cares about @geoffreygershon
Welp, just got back from seeing for the first time, in IMAX no less. Basically had the time of my life. Some of the heights this concert film reached were higher than any concert or studio recording I've ever seen or heard. Once in a Lifetime for one, even though it's already a great song, was just... eargasmic. Loved it so much I'm gonna go see it again tomorrow night.
A fine work and artistic symbiosis between David Byrne and Jonathan Demme.
I'm so thankful for Bernie Worrel an Tina W. bringing this swinging South American beat to keep the public shaking it all night ...
They had the time of their life !
A24 u guys are schooling our generation good, thank u!!
This is in my top 5 concert films. Just brilliant how the band and stage grows as the concert plays through. Masterpiece 👌👌👌
Have you heard of The Doublejumps? you might enjoy them if you like Talking Heads
Is the Last Waltz on that list?
@@drumaholicsanonymous7784obviously
The Last Waltz? Hahaha! Compared to Stop Making Sense, the absolute worst!
Concert for Bangladesh
The lights, the position of the cameras, the cinematography in one word… Johnathan Demme is a genius at the same height of David Byrne !
I think we've just found Cillian Murphy's next role
Everything that is modern and cool and indie originates in this performance
Saw this at an IMAX, in one word :life-changing. It's more than music, it's an experience. ❤
Just saw a screening today and I was just blown away. It was so good that I was disappointed when it was over
A24 made me believe in watching movies again. ❤
Just saw this in IMAX tonight. I've watched this film maybe 20 times over the years, but this experience blew me away!
Phish played this whole concert for Halloween in 96 and it does it justice. My dad introduced me to Talking Heads.
Seeing this yesterday, I really had to restrain myself from annoying the other people in the theater by singing along with everything at the top of my lungs.
When DVD's were new I was an avid collector, saw this and read "Best concert Movie ever", decided to buy, went home and was blown away. Talking Heads will always be in my top 5 bands ever.
don’t know about you guys but i will be seated and i WILL be wearing a big ass suit 🫡
**inserts Denzel Washington gif**
"Mah man!" 😂
This is such an amazing thing to experience at a movie theater and I'm so glad it's getting a re-release. I really wish Prince's Sign o' The Times gets the same treatment one day.
Have you heard of The Doublejumps? you might enjoy them if you like Talking Heads
I second this!!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
David changed my life in the early 80s. I grew up in a hillbilly town and his music showed me the way out.
In the late 90s, I was at a concert at the rose gardens in Portland Oregon and he was sitting right next to me and I didn’t know who he was. He got up and started dancing and then I knew who he was.. lol
just a normal guy always bringing the light.
I saw Talking Heads perform Stop Making Sense at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles on one of the nights when they were filming for the movie. It was one of the best shows I saw during the wild ‘80s in L.A. Nothing beats David Byrne singing Naive Melody in person. My friend Jeff’s whistle is clearly audible in the movie. 😅
I worked with a guy that went all three nights that they were filming this! 😮
In the days between the AP exam and the last day of class, my economics teacher put this on as “cultural enrichment.” That’s how I got into the band.
Wow the musical version of Oppenheimer is awesome. Deserves best picture and best actor. To do both films in one year is impressive
A friend of mine was working as a stagehand at an open air theater in the early 80s before the Talking Heads were a huge deal and he described how before their concert they had to hang a mercury vapor street light over the stage and one guy was given a cue to plug it in after David Byrne walked out onto the dark stage and set down a boombox, and hit play to start the drum track.
The vapor light flickered to life and the concert started. At one point the stagehands thought Byrne was being electrocuted because he started shaking so violently but it was all part of the act . they had no idea what the group was about at that point
That's hilarious and sounds about right
Literally the best theatre experience of my life.
Saw it in the Chinese theatre IMAX in LA.
The whole bottom near the screen turned into a GA pit.
A truly beautiful moment of music bringing folks together. 🙏🏼
More of that please.
Tonight I saw the screening at AMC IMAX on 42 St in NYC. Really great. I lived in the East Village in early 80’s. You can’t help but move watching this and we applauded after songs. There was a live Q&A after with Spike Lee and David, Jerry, Chris & Tina from the TIFF. You could cut the tension with a knife. They really don’t like David. From what I’ve read, he was very hurtful to them. Spike kept trying to pump it up shouting questions at them. They were overwhelmed seeing on a big screen. They answered questions as best they could. Then they took questions from audiences all over the world & the first was from my hometown Chattanooga!! I’ve lived in NYC many years. What are the chances? They are great artists. It was a great band but not very easy to be in.
David Byrne still making music, doing musicals, and anything in between. Still lives in NY for all those years and rides his bike to the office.
Great but I want a 4K Blu Ray disc release
This film is a triumph of the musical spirit. They sound so good. The choreagrapghy of David's body is mind baffling and NEEDS to be seen
I love David Byrne. He's incredibly bright with such an innovative spirit. Plus, seeing him in person made me realize how unbelievably beautiful he is. His entire face had this symmetry that was like nothing I'd ever seen. Timeless in the way a 1950s actor looked.
I have the original version on USB plugged into my TV for easy access at all times. Many late whiskeys and chill with it on, the whole thing is pure magic.
Talking Heads, living Legends !!
Is this coming to bluray or streaming? I want this 4K version.
I was a kid when Talking Heads was a thing but i remember my dad was given a copy of this movie on VHS as a gift. I still remember these songs so fondly!
thank you A24 and Talking Heads for letting me see this on the big screen!!
The amount of enegy put into this concert is crazy. There is the one part where you seen in this commercial they are jogging like aerobics, and singing too.The stanima is off the charts. They really busted their ass to put on a good show with this.
I was at the concert in 1983 at the Stanley Theater. To this day, it was the best live show I’ve ever seen.
*EPIC!*
Glad it’s coming to IMAX theaters! Hope for a Criterion release.
I hope this starts a trend of more concert films in theaters
I love few things as much as I love this concert movie. A pure masterpiece
I saw this for the first time about 14 hours into a 24 hour cinema marathon at my local independent cinema a few years back and it's one of the best things I saw that day/night. Can't wait to see it in the cinema again!
Have you heard of The Doublejumps? you might enjoy them if you like Talking Heads
Mother would have loved this.
Watching at the cinema with a decent sound system blew me away.
I'd seen it years ago on VHS but watching it on the big screen was amazing.
David Byrne is a genius, simple as.
I got chills watching this trailer. I can’t wait
I wonder what it will be like to see in theaters… I’ll have a hard time just sitting still and quietly watching - i can’t help but feeling the groove!!!
I've got seats in the front row and I'm wondering how long into the film it's going to be before I have to get up and dance, and potentially piss everyone off ha ha
Talking Heads ❤❤❤
Hold on a minute, let me just recover from that.
Right? I saw this in the theater when it was first released so now I apparently need a lap robe and ear trumpet.
I was there 40 years ago as a teenager. Can't wait to take my family to see this next month!
this band is ahead of its time
I was thankful to have seen this in IMAX when it came out. This definitely needs a Criterion release
I saw this at a double feature. The other movie Purple Rain. I think it was the next year (or year after that) Laurie Anderson came out with her concert movie "Home of the Brave", it was playing as a double feature with "True Stories".
AMAZING AMAZING AMAZINGGGGG! Can never get enough of Talking Heads and Stop Making Sense, and the 40th anniversary for it this year has been a real treat. WILL be seated!
I love Talking Heads. I found a CD by mistake in Miami by them and fell in love with it. Especially Tina. What a Great Bass Player she is!!! ❤❤❤❤😂😊
Just saw the Remastered film after 40 years of seriously digging on this the first time around. Talk about the second time around - absolutely dynamite!
Seeing this in imax was a treat. Hope it comes out on 4k blu ray. Come on A24
Although Talking Heads will likely never perform again, we are at least now capable of living it up (or reliving) on one of their best live performances.
idk, never say never cause they're apparently doing an interview together at TIFF this year for the first time since the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame performance back in like '02
@@hardlyworking_it's airing alongside the IMAX release of this
Talking Heads are popular among people who weren't even born during their run. This may sway David Byrne to change his mind.
Saw it the other day. Not much of a talking heads fan but I gotta say that’s one of the greatest 🎥s I’ve ever seen
I saw the concert in Phila 40 yrs ago and was dancing in the theater last night.

SO glad I went and saw it in the theater.
Had a great crowd to watch it with; the energy is absolutely infectious! Next best thing to actually being there.
I had previously only seen little fragments over the years and I’m glad about that, because now the full experience will resonate with me anytime I watch it again. And I will!
Petition to make Cillian Murphy play David Byrne in a biopic about creating this concert film
Just saw this film yesterday in NZ, on my 73rd birthday!! can't believe this is 40 years old. David Byrne is phenomenal.
I'm never been this excited to see a movie I've already fucking seen.
Oh, I saw this movie many times at the cinema in the eighties❤ True Stories as well.
I just saw this. Oh MAN. What amazing musicians and personalities -- ALL. I never knew that I had really BADLY missed out. I fell in love with every single one of the performers.
I started listening to Talking Heads in '97 and people were like "why you listening to that weird 80's band?" It's looking like those born around '97 would catch on years later.
They're not weird

I'm already in.
Best concert film IMO. I will be there on the 11th, ready to dance.
Ditto - picking out my boxiest blazer!!
Saw this in theatres and it was fucking amazing, it was unreal
This is a great trailer as it evokes the style and spirit of the original 1984 trailer, and adds some appropriate flourishes too. Trailers for remastered re-releases usually just feel like someone's thrown it together at home with a load of fades to black between shots and some slapped on captions.
Just got back from seeing this not even an hour ago at Alamo. What an absolute delight. Can’t believe I almost missed seeing it in theaters.
Got to see this last week, what an INCREDIBLE experience! The entire show had totally unmatched energy!
A24 good job. Real nice. It's a beautiful and wonderful film that captures the 80s music scene perfectly. I lost count the number of times I went to see this film in a tiny now gone basement theater.
Saw this in 4k last night, seeing it a cinema was amazing
Two of my best friend’s showed this to me after moving out at 18. We didn’t have any WiFi in our shared flat for the whole year of living together but we did have stacks of dvd’s from each other’s homes and a weed man who lived below us. Every night was an education and the night we watched this together will always be one of the greatest nights that I’ll ever remember!
Some of Cillian Murphy's best work, not sure how he hasn't aged since then.
A24 providing its greatest public service yet: saving Gen Z by intoducing them to Talking Heads.
We do listen music released before we were born. We’ve known who Talking Heads are.
