INSIDE Kurt Cobain’s Abandoned Hollywood Hills In Utero House
• INSIDE Kurt Cobain’s A...
Music - What’s It To Ya Punk by Audionautix
Kurt Donald Cobain (February 20, 1967 - April 5, 1994) was an American singer, songwriter and musician, best known as the guitarist, primary songwriter and frontman of the rock band Nirvana. Through his angst-fueled songwriting and anti-establishment persona, Cobain's compositions widened the thematic conventions of mainstream rock music. He was often heralded as a spokesman of Generation X and is considered to be one of the most influential musicians in the history of alternative rock.
In Utero is the third and final studio album by American rock band Nirvana, released on September 13, 1993, by DGC Records. Nirvana intended to depart from the more polished sound of their previous album, Nevermind (1991), with a greater range of sounds and moods. To capture a more abrasive and natural sound, Nirvana hired engineer Steve Albini to record In Utero over two weeks in February 1993 at Pachyderm Studio in Cannon Falls, Minnesota. The lyrics and album packaging incorporated medical imagery that conveyed frontman Kurt Cobain's outlook on his publicized personal life and Nirvana's newfound fame.
The writing for the bulk of what became In Utero was done in this house on Alta Loma Terrace high up in the Hollywood Hills. - Zábava
Thanks!
You are the best! Thank you for your generosity toward the channel my man. Lots more coming !
@@SCOTTONTAPE -lookin fwd to it!-LA need sto quit tearing down all their historic buildings-it's depressing....
@@tankerman135yup they have no regard for pop culture history here it’s sad
@@SCOTTONTAPE -ANY history for that matter-peace!
@@SCOTTONTAPE Hey Scott, Is Bobby Goldsboro your real dad? He has a song called "Watching Scotty grow" and he looks a lot like you! (Serious) At very least related?
One by one pieces of our musical history is disappearing. Sad that this home is being demolished. Rip Kurt. May you finally have the peace that you deserve. Thank you Scott for being so respectful while showing this house.
@@ahhhnushka A home can be a place of inspiration to a person. Kurt was a man who did exactly that. He wrote what inspired him.
@@rebeccablakey2637 Clearly it wasn't for him.
They can’t “preserve” every single house that has been home to artists or actors at some point in the last century… in this case, less than a year, or was it just a few months ?
Plus this house is basically a pile of old wood so there’s nothing to save here.
Also, Scott said In Utero was written in the apartment, not this house.
Ashame
He couldn't handle fame, they were famous for less than a decade so i fail to see a reason the house should stay....he was there for three months,,,,
My dad in the early 80s met Kurt at a garage party in Seattle, before he even became famous. My dad said that he was a chill dude and kept to himself, writing music.
Cuts to kurt huffing gas cans as your dad looks in horror
What, when kurt was 15 lol
It's a bummer that the house is going to be torn down, it's a really neat location. Glad you got to stop by and film it while in the area.
This makes me really sad. I wish they would've fixed it up and made it into a bed and breakfast like ghe Olympia house but that probably would've taken maga bucks if it was structurally unsound. Glad you were able to see it before its gone.😔 .thanks for going there Scott!!
Probably was the plan.
It's in an exclusive, rich neighbourhood though. The people don't want any more tourists than there already are. They spend millions to live in peace.
It's crazy how all of his homes had the same characteristics. This home reminds me of the house in Seattle.
I’ve heard his management put Kurt there, hoping the location’s inaccessibility would help Kurt clean up. I’ve often wondered how you’d get emergency vehicles through the most narrow, windy roads in Laurel Canyon… here you could get no emergency vehicles at all!
I picture drug dealers arguing about the walk
29 years and 3 months since he's been gone. Its a real shame nothing was done to preserve this house. Its very beautiful there!!!
Do you know why rock stars houses arn't sold I see it all the time 🇦🇺
@sharongoodsell9341 no why?
If he just wrote and did the unpolished version of In Utero in that house, okay it should be preserved, I am in total agreement. If Kurt Cobain committed suicide in that house, it should be demolished, there could have been some bad juju in that house. And I feel the same way about Sharon Tate’s old house. Yes Trent Reznor did “The Downward Spiral” in that house, *it was also where Charles Manson and his “Family” brutally murdered Sharon Tate* . Raze it, fill the basement with cement, and burn some sage on the newly vacant lot.
he only lived there for three months....
@@sawtooth808e didn’t die in that house. He died in the room above the garage called “ the greenhouse “ in his Seattle home.
Anyone that would buy this house and does not preserve it does not deserve it
Thanks .. love the content great channel
People do not appreciate the history behind anything anymore. I wasn’t a Kurt fan at all nor Courtney. But it’s sad..
Ll
It is wrong that a beautiful historic home like this one get demolished. Cool that one of the first Asian American actors called it home too. I will look that actor up now.
These comments are the best. Always a good laugh! Get all your little buddies together and buy it. THEN, just for fun I will tell you what you can or can’t do with it!😂😂😂😂😂
This is sad for a child of the 90's, Nirvana was such a big part of my life, they should have kept this as a memory of Kurt😔
“Kurt & Courtney could hear the Hollywood Bowl concerts from there balcony”. Wow, what a visual! Sadly, another place that will be gone soon. Appreciate you & John taking the trip to give most of us one last look. Take care.
Thank you Nicky!
I'm old so I couldn't climb all those stairs! You have performed a public service by doing so, sir. Thank you.
It wasn’t easy! And you’re so welcome !
I'm glad you're documenting this because your videos linked to this home will be frozen in history.
Great video Scott
That house is beautiful - I wish they weren’t tearing it down. Even the plants around the area are amazing
I just watched you with Michael Kolence from Grimm Life Collective from this very house!!! I love watching his and Jessica's Grimm Adventures!!! I had to subscribe to your channel and check out your content as well. I am a huge Nirvana fan!!!
Well, friend, here's a LITTLE😂 story you MIGHT care about? My band & a couple others were on break from tour & headed from Nashville to Atlanta to see Frank Black & the Ramones on April 8, 1994. I wasn't a big fan of Nirvana, but my drummer met Kurt at a small club gig in Memphis a couple yrs before they hit it big. Anyway, on the way down every time we'd flip a tape over the radio was playing Nirvana. Eventually we wondered why & got the news they found Kurt. That night the usually quiet Joey Ramone dedicated Pet Semetery to Kurt! I wish I remembered what Black said, but I wasn't a big Pixies fan either😅, but I know Kurt loved them, so epic moment in time for me! I also was at Bumbershoot '97 in Seattle, which can be seen on here, for what may have been Foo Fighters first stadium gig, as Grohl says they've now graduated to stadium rock! It was also where he introduced Taylor Hawkins as their new drummer. Was also Smear's final show before his 1st departure. For encore Dave came out by himself & started playing Purple Rain😅 & got us singing & waving our arms, then walked back to the kit & Smear walked out on one side of stage & Krist Novoselic the other! Was the very 1st Nirvana reunion without Kurt. Then they broke into "Communication Breakdown" by Zeppelin to finish show. It was wild times!😎 I missed the last bus home so I crashed behind the Space Museum.😅 I woke up, walked to McDonald's & saw newspaper headline: "Princess Diana Killed In Car Crash." I traced it back. Happened during Sonic Youth's set before Foos. Ground footage of show is pretty fukn good after crowd settles. I was there on 5 yrd-line & if had sophisticated enough equipment could prob find my 26 yro self!😅 Unfortunately tape ends before encore, but longer vid has, but crappy footage!😔 Guy "singing", Barrett?, was an old Nirvana engineer I think? So part of Nirvana crew. A month or so later I caught Foos again in Nashville. After show I was sitting in parking lot drinking beer & lo & behold, Dave Grohl walked out all by himself, told everybody to hold on a min, went in his bus & came back out & hung out & talked to EVERYBODY!!! Just like stories you here about him! We even talked a min about Bumbershoot gig!😅 I'd seen Foos 1st tour, those 2 times, & caught them 7 more times before I retired in '10. & had tix in Miami one yr & they had to cancel. & there's a reason for that! Dave may have only got known from Nirvana, but HE PLAYED ANYWHERE & EVERYWHERE HE COULD! He's the REAL DEAL, friend! Btw, I wound up loving Nirvana!🤗💕
🤣🤣🤣
RIP Kurt Cobain!🙏❤
Thanks again for a Kurt post 😊 I had heard they were knocking it down… it’s a pity it has great character…
It's so sad to lose a house with so much history. I wish they would change the rules on declaring landmarks because that house has a lot of value to many folks who really don't care about a hole in the floor. That sure is high up in those hills. I think It would just about kill me to make that climb. How in the world did they even build this way up there like that? It sure is a beautiful location though. It's going to feel so sad when the final updated video only shows a pile of rubble or even nothing at all. Thank goodness for wonderful people like you who, through your videos, will keep its memories and history alive. It's a bittersweet video, but time marches on RIP to Keith Cobain who has made it to his final home ❤ 💐
@flocosta Kurt 😂😂😂😂😂 Not Keith😅

Scott that so sad it has to be torndown!! Cool to hear the inside info from your friend, awesome that he met him.. RIP Kurt, the music never dies!!!!!❤🎸🎵😎🙏🏽
I'm sure the neighbors are relieved. Probably lots of visitors on weekend evenings. Still impressed that The Cure sold out 3 nights at The Hollywood Bowl & this week are in New York where they sold 3 nights at Madison Square Garden. Nirvana would be doing those type of sales were they still here.
Glad you had one final look, Scott. Thanks for taking us along!
This is my comfort channel. Thank you so much for what you do. You act with compassion, add so much knowledge and you've got a soothing voice. “I miss the comfort In being sad,” are lyrics to a Nirvana track that totally escapes me at this moment.
From the song Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle
"Francis the Farmer"
Better to be sad that unfeeling.
2:52 that huge jade plant is amazing!!!!
It's to bad that they are tearing it down, I wish they would fix it up instead. Thank you for your great work Scott.
Scott this is an interesting video. Thank you for keeping us in the loop.
Awesome video man thank you for the update on this place
Awesome video,Scott!
How heartbreaking had no idea thank you for doing this❤ you are greatly appreciated
Thank You Scott for going again!! Your first visit has stayed in my mind, & was incredible!! Heartbroken it is going to be demolished! Hopefully I will make it there before it goes!😥💗💞
Oh no that’s sad it’s going to be torn down. Keep us updated. Good video! Thank you!
It was nice meeting you today! Thanks for the great video! So sad to hear that they're demolishing it.
Thank you, again, for that first video walkthrough, and for giving us an update.
One of my favorite videos you did. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for taking us with you Scott! That was quite a hike. I will check out your video from a couple years ago when you were able to go inside. As always, you manage to make me laugh..... squirrel 🐿️😂✌️❤️
Thanks for the video. Sad another piece of music history is about to be gone. R.I.P. Kurt.
Dang!!!! I'm at a loss for words😢 Thank you for posting and stay safe out there😊👍😎🙏
Here in Washington there's the house where Kurt died in Seattle, and the Bordeaux house near Capital Forest in Olympia. Both homes have since been auctioned off by none other than Courtney Love. His old apartment building in Olympia (where I live) still stands. The apartment is unassuming because it's where he lived before he got famous. It's something of a tourist destination.
Another great video Scott, so sad x
Super video Scott. Well done. I love the video's about Kurt. Thank you Scott for a great video 💞
Historical landmark status in an area where so many Hollywood people lived and still do must be super difficult. Much cheaper to tear down and build new. The Asian Craftsman inspired architectures is so unique and I bet not many exist of that era. The dragon plaque should at least be archived.
Man, this is sad. What a historic place. Thanks for the great video.
That was a tough walk. Thank you Scott for doing this for us. Peace out
Damn that sucks! But hey got Scott bringing us the great content as usual. Look forward to the next ones as always!!!!!!
Watching from uk 🇬🇧 thanks for your information great video 😊
Thanks awesome video
I remember watching your video tour of the house Scott. Will be a shame to see it go. Thanks for awesome content. Greetings from Scotland!
I was thinking the same thing about renovating or demolishing a house located in a situation like this. Everything would have to be hand carried on and off site. I wouldn’t even want to deal with moving in/out or dragging groceries in and trash out of a location like that! It was a cool looking house but definitely not for me!
They use a helicopter to deliver materials and remove waste. That’s how one of my friends did it in his house similar to this one. As much as a helicopter costs it’s still a lot cheaper compared to the labour to haul materials that far up the hill
Thats pretty much the reason it wasn't demolished before.
My day got better thank you friend. You are Amazing
Thanks Scott! Cool Home, ❤ RIP Cobain 😢
Such a shame☹ Thanks for creating these video memories for us👍
I love Kurt and Nirvana. Thanks for this video Scott ❤
Thank you Scott for walking all the way up there .very sad the way things change 😢
Thanks for posting this for us. Hope to see it in September when I’m there. ✌️❤️🤘
So sad such iconic place is going to be torn down. Great video. ✌️
Man, this is really sad news. Your previous video on this house is what brought me to your channel a few months ago. Anyway, on a lighter note I just want to say keep up the great work you are doing my fellow Nirvana fan😊
Lovely footage, thanks for sharing. I strongly believe this house could be saved and it should be restored. I watched your other videos a while back when you and your other friend that makes films went up there...I was amazed when you guys were walking around inside, the floors weren't creaking, even the stairs didn't make noise, and it seemed very solid to me. Demolishing it seems harder than a restoration. It seems like such a beautiful home, I love the way the outside feels and looks. Please somebody save it? That dragon sculpture that is built into the wall is cool too.
Scott.. your love for Kurt Cobain and Nirvana is appreciated. It’s great to see some of these places through your lens. Dziękuje z Polski !!!
Sad that it has to be torn down but then again, you can't have people showing up & walking around the inside anymore. It would have been a matter of time before someone got hurt or worse due to it being so unstable. How the heck will they get the equipment up there to demolish it? It is such a difficult location plus being so close to the other homes. Are they going to tear it down using just hand tools? Geez, I can't imagine... I get why Cobain fans leave messages, but I hope once the new building is up that the owners won't have problems with people visiting the house & continuing to vandalize it with markers/spray paint. Thanks for the updated video, Scott.
Thank you Scott! Hope they at lease keep some of the greenery!
Such a shame it’s to be demolished I’m sure it could have been fixed up
Thanks Scott another fab video
Oh no!! I have seen that tour of the place. It is so unique. It would be a crime to demolish it!!
Hi Scott
Love it Scott. I have to say i really find it amazing how you find these places even the celebs home. Just like when you said you know where Stephen twitch boss house is. Of course it's understandable why you didn't show it and you did the right thing. I just find it amazing how you find these homes. That's why you was made for doing this channel. I hope deep down you realise what a legend you are and I'm sure you do 😊
Thank you Aki I appreciate it brother
@@SCOTTONTAPE anytime brother. You deserve all the credit for your hard work and research you put into these videos. Keep up the amazing work. You have my support 😊
Dang this is sad they demolish everything historic and good down in LA ...I live in Northern California things are so different down south...thanks for the video! ♥
Wow double locked 😮. I saw u first video and u did inside Kurt house I love that first video.
My head thinking about Kurt always, so sad 😢
so sad. Thank you for documenting this. Once they demolish it, we will only have photos and video recordings like yours.
I'm not the biggest Nirvana fan, but I'm all about the history of Southern California, and me being a musician, I do respect what Kurt and Nivana brought to alternative music. I just shared this episode to my YT post feed. Gotta support ya brah! Rock On, Rock Hard!!! 🤘🦇♠️ -J.s.
Thank you Scott for video of house while still there just sad to see plans to be demolished, for still looks like nice house.
I could fully understand why they decided to just demolish it. For one thing it is not a very friendly way to get to it (for those of us out of shape and even for those with mobility issues) and I am sure many people who live in that area do not want a bunch of people traffic going thru if they preserved the structure or turned it into something that people would be itching to visit. Sadly, that place really did not represent the best time for Kurt as his mental health was concerned. It is very sad to see it be demolished, but if we preserved every single star's home, birthplace home, etc... thinking about 30% or more of Cali would be sitting as museums.
Now, from what I gathered... this place sold a few times since 1988 and the last sale was just under 1 Million to Arthur Jafa Fielder, a Mississippi-born video artist and cinematographer. There was an application submitted in 2021 to make that house a Historical-Cultural Monument. It was filed by Adrian Scott Fine. Sadly, it was determined to not qualify... in that rejection notice it stated:
"The facts show, however, that the Property does not meet any of the criteria for designation as an HCM. While two notable people did reside at the property for very short periods of time, this fact alone fails to qualify it as a historic monument. Moreover, after being subjected to: (i) a failed restoration effort by the prior owners, (ii) countless break-ins, (iii) vandalism, and (iv) years of deferred maintenance, the existing building is beyond repair. Moreover, we also demand that the Commission take no further action on this nomination due to its bias in favor of the Conservancy, and that the matter be referred to an unbiased tribunal, i.e., the Board of Referred Powers, before any further action is taken."
So, there are THREE points and that place in question has to meet 1 of the three... and it met none of them. I feel the rejection was more so because none of the prior owners took care or even attempted to take care of the location. Also keep in mind, that even if it did qualify for the HCM, did not mean the place wouldn't end up demolished anyway. The results of the determination was made public in April of this year.
You can view the application submission and all the letter and end results if you so wish at www.laconservancy.org/sites/default/files/files/issues/CHC_2021_9228_HCM_Philip_Ahn_Kurt_Cobain_Residence_Final.pdf
As someone that don’t like to hike, you did a good job with that hill and stairs lolol. Great video as always 🤗
That sucks that that house is going to be demolished. But thank you for filming this Scott as always.
You are simply the best
Ohh my goodness there is no way i would have made it up those stairs...looks really cool from the outside though! R.I.P Kurt...Love your video's Scott
I’ll carry you up haha
Cool thing that you were able to film it while it was here. That's the great thing about CZcams. Try and film things while we can and share it with people that live in other parts of the Country or World.
If the new property owners were smart, they would dismantle the house and sell it in parts to Kurt’s fans. They could recoup some of the costs and make a lot of fans happy since it needs to be torn down. Just a thought 🤔💭😊
Scottontape love the content hope you get a souvenir off the house before they demolish it peace
Just watched your video from 2 years ago, the other day. Thats alot of money for a house that will be torn down. I wonder if the new owner knew it wasn't safe before paying. Good video. Crazy place to live.
Such a shame looks like it could be made beautiful. Also another part of music history lost thanks for sharing Scott love from West Yorkshire UK 🇬🇧 💙💚
WOW the cost associated with tearing that down in that location would have to be huge. Unreal how much money people sink into stuff.
Great video Scott
Yes , but after they build a new home in that area houses go around 3-6 millions. May sound high but real state in LA County are to the roof.
Great video! SO many stairs... haha I'd never get up that way with my manual wheelchair.
It’s difficult for sure
Thank you for the last look. It looks like a pretty place to live in. Pretty area. Gotta have strength to take those stairs every day if the elevator doesn't work.
So Sorry to heart that they are tearing it down hope you get some souvenir's to have for treasure to remember it by and I never saw the squirrel I tired three times to rewind it to see but never seen it they are fast so may be that is why but thanks for sharing 🤟🤟🤟

Great video Scott it's crazy that they are demolishing the house but guess all good things come to an end
I have always wondered where the huge dragon carving on the wall ended up. Can see it in some early videos of the property, then gone in recent. So cool
Oh man I remember your video from when you went inside. It's a shame it's being torn down, it's apart of grunge history for all of us Nirvana fans. Yeah I get it it's just not safe to be in it and around it but still. 😭😭😭
Demolishing his old house is a travesty! Even if it's haunted. This is a place of rock memorabilia 🎉 I'm curious to know if structurally unsound, means ' ghostly activity, or fixtures or pipes busted. And if once the place is demolished if it's left a vacant lot because the neighborhood just doesn't want the foot traffic. I've seen much worse condition places restored.
If i was a neighbor i would want it tore down also house is a eye sore an looked barely livable when kurt lived there an im sure half the people that goes there and prob vandalizing there homes and property since they don't mind jumping fences and spraying everything in sight
Hey Scott 🙋🏽. I can just imagine this has got to be a little devastating for you ‼️ to know it's going to be demolished.
Thank you Scott, for sharing the story I really enjoyed it.. you’re such a good storyteller..
such an interesting neighborhood.. that elevator would creep me out and the garages look destroyed lol. but the homes.. so interesting!!
