    Thank you very much for the tutotrial. One of the first i don't have to accelerate X2 to follow :-). There's step I don't understand well is about value replacement. If you replace departement ID (so secondary key) how the ID HRFM, HRFH ... will link with the DimEmployee table, as the primary keys have not changed...

      I am happy you found the tutorial useful and that it has the right speed. I try to stay more to the point, than go around the bushes for nor reason :).
      Now, related to you question, first of all well spotted. I have tried to add that step more like a how to do it. In real life this would create a blank result and all sort of issues.
      The solution is to make the replacements in the original table or file, before duplicating, and then both the employees table and the department id table would have the same IDs.

    When creating a dimension table, can I use references instead of duplicates?
    What is the difference between the two methods?

    • @MMS-PowerBI
      @MMS-PowerBI  Před 17 hodinami +1

      In theory both duplicate and reference will give you a copy of the initial query, but.... There is a but :)
      With duplicate when you change/modify the initial query, the copy will not be affected. Whatever steps you make in the fact table, they will not be reflected in the dimension table.
      With reference on the other hand, any changes you make to the initial query will be reflected in the copy. For example, if you use reference to create the parts dimension and then in the fact table you remove the part description column, then the description column will be removed in the dimension table as well.
      I hope this answer you question. If if you have any more question please give me a shout. I'll be more than happy to help.
