    I wish people wouldn't afraid to teach others the "hangman's" knot, it's WAAAAY easier than this and almost no chances to mess it up, it's also more practical than the bowline. I'm trying to remember how to tie a bowline, but after some years pass without tying it, I forget how to do it properly. I was taught how to tie the hangman knot more than 20 years ago in the sailors class, and I can tie it first try no matter how many years passed since i last tied it.

    Ryan you give so many good tips, People who do knot videos on CZcams tend to way "overthink" this simple knot. The best locking variation, 15:30 in my opinion comes from the Rock climbers community, it is actually called the Scott's locking bowline... the "over under over" of the tag end? Excellent video! Probably the very best advice you can give is just
    "Pick one method" and learn it very very well.. Since the bowline is considered a Life Saving knot in the case of a man overboard situation, you cannot afford to be fiddling around trying to remember how to tie it correctly when seconds count.. So Again thank you I really appreciate your video with the "trouble shooting"..

    i would say, especially for sailors, you should practice tying this knot in a clock wise and counter clock wise way. As well as using your right hand dominant and left hand dominant. Sometimes variables do not allow you to tie a knot the way you built muscle memory for. For example, if your standing line is running away from you vs. toward you (like in your video)

    I used to struggle with tying a bowline around an object back in the day (when I was in a situation that required me to tie it away from myself) but figured it out on my own. Thank you very much for making a video on it & explaining! Blows my mind how more people don’t touch up on this, because it can definitely be confusing. If you can remember that it has to be an underhand loop instead of an overhand, & the loop has to be on the inside (facing towards the tail) you’ll never be confused again! FYI: You can use the overhand loop when tying the Slipknot/snap method, but I’d stick with the underhand for muscle memory, because it can look funky if you are used to throwing your rope around in only one direction. (Clockwise or counter)

    This is the best instruction for the bowline knot, for a newbie like me. I have looked at videos and asked an ex military man physically show me how to do it at a picnic. I practiced it several times, but like Ryan said it was demonstrated backwards in a hypothetical example, so when it came time for me to use it, I couldn’t do it. I know it’s partially my fault, because I’ve never had a chance to use it. So your instructions were awesome. There were some comments that said it took over 19 minutes for this knot, but this video was perfect for newbies like me, (actually the first knot took under 2 minutes), thanks Ryan, good job!

  • @skeetersaurus6249
    @skeetersaurus6249 Před 5 lety

    Thanks for FINALLY explaining to many, that there is a 'left-handed' bowline knot! I learned to tie my bowlines like that years ago, in the military, for one SIMPLE reason...when using hemp ropes, if you tie with the 'tail' to the inside of the bite, OFTEN, the load will rub against the tail until it UNTIES YOUR BOWLINE!!! If you tie a 'left-handed' bowline (7:50), this puts the tail to the outside of the burden bite, and as a result, YOU WILL NOT HAVE A LOOSENED bowline! You also don't have to remember 30-knots to do work, being as with the left-handed bowline, you only really need 5-total knots to do ALL general work (Reef, Bowline, butterfly, figure-8, sheet)...oh, yeah, and a trucker's hitch (I really consider that a 'rigging' more than a simple knot, though.

The slip knot method just makes it so fast and easy - and I'am left handed so always have to correct the explanations!

    So you did the rabbit out of the hole, round the tree and back down the hole, you just didn't use those words. As for doing it round an object, such as the carabiner used here, I had figured out that this made it easier, or at least eliminated the possibility of doing it wrong, just prior to watching this video. The one difference is that I prefer to make the loop before feeding the running end around/through the object, for some reason it seems more intuitive to me, but the outcome is still the same.
    Anyway, well done on producing a video with nice, clear instructions and not letting your hands block the view of what you're doing, unlike some of the others.

    One of the most important knots in sailing. It might save you, your friends or even the boat when things go haywire. It can be done in many ways, as seen in this video, and you should pratice them all. Clockwise, counterclockwise, facing you, facing away from you and onehanded (useful if you damage and arm, or if you have to use one warm to hold fast on deck while securing a sheet, halyard, preventer or whatever. Also practice tying around yourself. Very handy if you fall overboard and only get tossed a straight rope. Get them all in to muscle memory. Practice while watching tv, sitting on the bus, during down time on shifts, and in the dark/blindfolded (I have practiced by taking cold showers in the dark with shampoo in my eyes ;) . As mentioned, it's an lifesaver when shit hits the fan, lights are out and waves are throwing you all over the place.

    I am an instructor in a different skill but it is a hand eye skill. We do not demonstrate the wrong thing to do to novices as it has a tendency to mentally imprint and creates confusion. After viewing your video I wasn't sure what correct knot I was trying to tie. Always use positive muscle memory until the student is proficient and then address possible mistakes after they have a firm grasp of the fundamentals. Good video production value and I do like your voice inflections and motivation.
