    I'm applying for 500 roles this year, once you start writing cover letters week in week out your writing starts becoming more refined and suave. I feel a lot of non faang companies have higher expectations for some reason than the actual FAANG companies. "Junior Developer Role Available: At least 2 years experience walking on water, 2 Years experience turning water into wine, must be able to build a time travel machine from scratch"

    • @future_teknokrat7585
      @future_teknokrat7585 Před rokem +2

      Because they are not pure tech companies. FAANG/MAMBA companies predominantly provide tech services to older traditional business entities. Tech companies care more about technical, logical, and engineering experience. Traditional businesses care more about domain and cumulative experience. Example, if you worked in healthcare and switched to being a software engineer, it would be easier to get hired at a healthcare related company or the healthcare related department of a business. Or they prefer some experience, because you are adding intellectual knowledge to their tech services, allowing them to be less dependent on FAANG/MAMABA. In other words, traditional businesses preferred to add knowledge to their ranking file as opposed to having to train, mentor and sponsor a candidate. The irony is, they are willing to do the same thing for entry-level candidates who work in the core of their business, something like health care, finance, energy, etc.

    • @belgianheskey
      @belgianheskey Před rokem +13

      The reality is they're cheapskates and want mid level developers on a entry level salary. Many of the companies I applied to were tech companies. Domain knowledge plays a part in some cases but in most cases they want people with experience of a dozen technologies or a length of experience that does not befit 'entry level'

    • @bonbongaming6995
      @bonbongaming6995 Před rokem +3

      Totally agree on this one.. Junior developer role requires # amount of exp like what? Are we supposed to be working as a developer while taking a full-time degree for entry pos is just ridiculously dumb lol.

    From experience I can tell you that everything in this video is spot on accurate. I'm retired and had plenty of time to help my son in this process. While he was destroying his braincells learning data-structures, I decided to lend a hand looking for internships for him. I'd send him the results 5 at a time and he'd fill them out. By the time he landed his final accepted job offer (after about 3 offers), I had collected about 180 of which he applied to 160 of them. The one thing I would add to this instructional video is that a spreadsheet is fine to keep track of the name of the company written as a directlink to the job description page of the job offer, and the date of application, date of coding interview, etc. But I think it's also important to keep all those links in a bookmark form on your browser. I kept all of them because after his sophomore year he'd want a second internship. In all I have over 400 SWE companies job-search pages saved and ready to be used in the future. When he graduated we used it and he got a job at a faanmg (hint hint). Guess what, my second son wanted to study SWE and we used it for him as well. His first internship was also with a faAng company (hint hint) and he got in. After his sophomore year he got called back for a second internship with them. Today both my oldest kids are working fulltime with those companies and they'll regularly remind me and thank me for the effort.

      @@Code0866 Data Structures is the primary way, and Intro to Algorithms is a close second. Most of the technical interview will be Data Structures questions. Here's my tip and please don't take it lightly. Become of TA or tutor in the student tutoring hall of your college for exclusively or principally Data Structures as my kids were. Because of it they were exposed to problems on a daily basis and they say it was all because of that tutoring job that they felt absolutely relaxed in their coding interviews. At one point in the tech interview the interviewer told my son after he answered a question, with a frazzled look, "Are you sure that's the answer you want to give me?!?" My son replied yes because blahblahblah and the interviewer was impressed. The interviewer was trying to trick my son or confuse him, but he knew better and with confidence saw through the trick. DS is the key to your success.

    Talk with people and see if you know someone via friends and family at some company and see if you can buy them some coffee and talk. They can then put your resume in/be a reference and that will get you on someone's desk. Out of the 60+ I applied to, the 3 companies I got interviews for were the ones I had connections at. I applied to every company in my city every semester and never got an internship (I couldn't really apply elsewhere as I work in animation so they don't just have that in the countryside). When it came to jobs I applied to over 300 jobs (stopped counting) before I got my first one...and it wasn't in my industry (it's in a related industry). I was willing to relocate, was constantly trying to tailor my resume and portfolio, and was generally just very flexible. Job fairs, networking events, conferences, cold emails, calls, I had my resume reviewed by recruiters to make sure it was solid, constant portfolio reviews...i tried it all. But it still took hundreds of apps. Not everyone has google beating their door down the day they graduate.
    I'm back in the process now and planning to make a video of my first 100 applications. Hopefully having some experience now will fair me better, but it's hard out there...

    The internship is very costly to the company, get a fresh starter and get one of the employees to give training to the intern and after all once the training is over the intern does not show any respect to the company and gives the resignation and leaves to find another job so this is the main reason many interns does not get a position easily, the only way an intern get a position if he can give a guarantee to the company in writing that after the internship he will stay with the company and provide the service and repay the cost the company had by productive work, that does not happen may interns thinks that there are the company offer free internships without any expectation

      I wish I could give you a proper list, but I'm not exactly sure myself. Something that may be helpful to think about is looking at the preferred qualifications for a job listing and using similar words in your resume.
      Also, try and think about what technical qualifications and past experiences you have and what a tech company would like to see in their applicants. Find the intersection of those two circles, and use those words in your resume. Hope this helps!

  • @givemeyourmoneynao

    I think the big mistake here is that you are expecting / trying to get a software engineering internship your freshman year. Companies don’t want freshmen when there are plenty of juniors looking for internships. It might seem like you are qualified as a freshman now, but when you are a junior or senior you will realize you’ve learned an incredible amount and just how inexperienced you were back then.
    Really as a freshman and sophomore, just focus on doing well in your classes. Study and actually learn and understand what you are being taught. You don’t need prior experience or extra circulars to land an internship your junior year if you have a good GPA and can demonstrate the ability to apply your knowledge.
    There is a lot of pressure in college to get an internship early, but really you don’t need to. Focus on yourself, do well in school, actually learn the material. The rest will come easily. There are lot of mediocre engineers out there, if you want a fulfilling job, you need to do well in school, and start to specialize in an area you enjoy.

    • @givemeyourmoneynao
      @givemeyourmoneynao Před rokem

      Also, if you want experience, teacher assistant jobs for relevant engineering classes. You can also look for positions aiding in research for professors / grad students which you can often find at your colleges job postings.
