Great video. As a member of the USAF, I was stationed here from Sep 01 - Sep 03 (was in transit between assignments when 9/11 happened and was stuck in Baltimore for 3 days before I even got to the island). My son was born here Aug 2002. I enjoyed my time here with my new family (got married May 2001; divorced 12 years later) and explored as much of the island as I could. Watching the waves crash near Biscoitos, having lunch at a waterfront restaurant in Porto Martins, or going to the annual carnival/festival in Praia...played LOTS of golf as well. It was lots of fun...very beautiful place and very nice/friendly people. Good food as well; swordfish cataplana, sandes mista, goat cheese, galao (sorry if I have misspelled these)...oh the memories of having a sandes mista and a galao for breakfast. I've wanted to re-visit the island for many years, mainly to bring my son along and show him the hospital he was born in in Angra. I guess the US military has left or is in the final stages of no longer being a 'temporary' guest (hence why all the military buildings are numbered with a 'T' at the beginning) here, so I imagine catching a space A flight is no longer an option.
I'm getting stationed here for a year soon, manning is down to less than 150 people I think, really looking forward to seeing what the island has to offer while I can
@@MerrickVisuals Oh wow...I thought there wasn't going to be ANY military there. I read an article 4-5 years ago that stated as much. At any rate, what career field are you? I was a weather forecaster...retired Jan 2012. Please do explore as much as you can...although the island is small, there are plenty of things to discover.
I spent 5 months there in the middle of 1974 as member of a VP Squadron. We loved to ride our bikes to the top of the island and explore the caves. great fun.
My grandad was in the Raf, when in 1943 he was sent out to Terceira to help build RAF Lagens,or as its called now, Lajes. Many stories he told me, about establishing the base, the weather, different quality of food compared to the Americans, etc. I think a trip is called for

lived below this approach when i was i have three years of age. single story 20x20 cement floor, no heat no air no TV no radio no telephone, no books no toys. i used to place my bunk bed ladder against the wall and climb up to look out a window my mother pulled me off and I got three stitches in my chin after I woke up. I did not have a good life.
That's awesome! I'm in Massachusetts and don't know if I'll go back. Since 911 I'm a mess with planes. Have done it a couple of times in US but still gets to me. I wish you the best of luck. :)
Most of my portuguese relatives are in or near Boston area. San Francisco to Boston is a great flight. . and Boston to Ponta Delgada even better. Come join your compatriots for bullfighting in Terceira 2019. It's fun. ♥♥♥~LAJES~♥♥♥
I station here June 1976 to Sept1977. My memories I have of this place are great. I wish I new how to get in touch with friends I new then. My name is Clint Titus
