- Here are some of my opinion on how to choose the best cowboy hat shape for you! I share some considerations when choosing what to buy or how to shape. Hat shape differ in different regions so this is just what I have found where I live.
Love these videos. I'm from Australia and I wear the buckaroo shape hats for max coverage from the sun.
I can’t imagine how much good sun coverage matters down there. Thanks for checking out the channel!

Cool! I'm from the USA, east coast, and wear various styles of cowboy hats. Not common for this part of the country, so I turn a lot of heads. Lol. More baseball-style caps around here. But I love the western hats!
Hey where did you get that buckroo looking hat at?
You probably have one of the only videos explaining the basics different hat creases from the traditional buckaroo crease to the styles of hats you’ll see in different parts of the country. I can almost tell where somebody’s from or where they’ve spent some time working out of by the crease of their hat. Don’t know why, but no one else on CZcams seems to be picking up on the wherefore and the why. Great content!
Thank you!
Hat is a very personal thing and hence, every man should have his own style. I personally prefer wide flat brim hats like the ones Stetson makes or Spanish Vaquero style hats. That’s what I wear when I am riding or going out with my girlfriend.
This is the most helpful video for choosing how to adjust much broken bow Stetson!
Howdy! First of all.. thanks for the information. I live on the western side of of Colorado called the western slope. Bought 4 stetsons for my seasons to wear for the style that goes with country style living.. got an "Open Road" in caribou Grey, "The Yancy" gambler flat brim in Phantom Grey, the "Los Alamos"(straw for summer) The "Markham" fedora crushable wool for fall/winter wear.. each hat gives me the confidence of being a stetson man for all occasions here in Colorado. Church, dates with my wife, outings, work, and just plain casual when I didn't have hair "beautified" up and just throw on my cowboy hat for the store. Own 4 stetsons but I'm sure they'll be more..
Cool! I'm on the other side of the country (New England) and wear a cowboy hat all the time (quite unusual around here). Mine are various styles and materials (felt and straw) to suit the changing seasons of this area. Love the look!
Im not a cowboy but i collect hats and now I want to add a cowboy hat. Great channel
I wear all kinds of hats but the most important thing a cowboy hat should always have if it is to be a work hat is a drawstring to keep it on your head because the last thing you want to be doing is chasing your hat across the cow pasture.
Not so much the chasing as the stuff i🤣t rolls thru.
Great ideas for this Yankee!
Your video reminded me of the fun I had when I moved back to central Texas and decided to get a felt cowboy hat. I went to a large hat store in Buda and got intense personal attention from the clerk. He knew his stuff and even cut down the brim using a circular stylus on an arm. The hat shrunk over time (or my head got fatter), so sadly I don't have it. I wish I'd kept the Indian-style hat band, though. I never found one I liked as much, even at the ranch-attire stores here in southern California.
Here, I mostly wear a palm-style straw hat, but it's "off the rack." No personal attention at this store. The shape is slightly "taco" as you say. I'm not particularly patriotic, but I really like the red/white/blue striped hat band, more like a kerchief, from my worn-out hat. I get a lot of compliments on it.
Thanks for the tips!
(You remind me a bit of Woody Harrelson's character "Carson Wells" in "No Country for Old Men."
This was an informative video and your delivery was great.
Thank you!
I have prom soon and came here looking for a hat to help me stand out and go with my suit. I going for the 4 and quarter brim. Thanks for the video
Very interesting and helpful. I wear several cowboy hats of various styles, and prefer the taco style generally. The flat styles I wear are narrow brims. Thanks for the info... you're very good at explaining the differences.
Right on!
I got tired of the cattleman crown so I originally reshaped mine into a Tom Mix "gus" crease, but it looked goofy so I went for the classic style that you often see on 50's western movies and tv shows where the crown is teardrop shaped and has more of a fedora like shape
I like the teardrop style crown too on my cowboy hats. Plus it's a nice change and seems a little cooler and more informal than the cattleman crown imho. I'm going to try a palm frond low Gus and roll the brim. Even though I originally thought they looked a little goofy.
@@charliesierra6919 sounds nice. A friend got a cactus crown block which is pretty cool. I like the informal teardrop because it's just an easy two finger grab on the point at the front. I don't get to wear it much though, but rodeo season is coming up so idk
@@rexjolles I know what you mean. My black teardrop is so easy to just pinch and put on. Good luck.
This is really, helpful, I just bought my first straw Ariat hat yesterday and I also have a felt Atwood hat as well now I am set.
Shape also depends on the type of work you do. Big flat brimmed hats are rough trying to keep on your head if you are swinging a rope. They also don't play well chasing cattle around the pine thickets here.
Then again I don't think most people watching stuff like this is wearing them for fashion more than function anyways.
I'm Texan and uhhh...Is your hat on backwards?
No sir
When did it become stylish to wear your hat wider in the front than the back? It does look backwards.
Great basin style
I’m here after watching Elon musk possibly wear his hat backwards at the border this past week 😂 (September 29, 2023)
I’d heard that wearing hats backward is a ‘thing’ in Texas?
Thank you for exampling😊.
May I ask how you clean and maintain your hats? Do you store them like hats in a closet in a mannequin head,or on a hook?
Is just the small brim least likely to blow away? Is there an inner band or some way of keeping the hat on more securely?
Also,is there something that lady's prefer or that's recommendedable to them aside from sizing (or including sizing) ?
Thank you, sir ! Good starting point .
Some common sense things to think about.
I moved to the southern California desert, a lot of heat and sun. Unfortunately I haven't found a local shop so unless I travel I'm going to have to shop online.
Wide brim vented straw with a fabric sweatband is what I'm looking for. All my straw fedoras have a leather sweatband and no venting, talk about flash floods..
I do like the look of the last hat you presented.
The Village Hat Shop
With this heat wave right now, I got a hat. And its sooo nice
Straw hats are GREAT in the heat. It's important that it fits properly.
In the UK when wearing Aussie slouch hats we just use a chinstrap, allowing us to wear whatever we like in the windiest of weather, avoiding a hat chase across a couple of fields. The chinstrap can be looped inside the crown on the calmest of days. Then something I have to consider do I wear my spectacles or do I wear contact lenses so I don't look like the 'milky bar kid'? . A cotton cycling hat with the brim cut off is good sweat collector protecting your prized possession!
Without a chin-strap, I've chased mine down several times here in the sometimes-quite-windy USA northeast. Lol.
Try ‘em all on. This made it clear the Stetson 6X Skyline Silverbelly was best look for me.
Awesome!
I am exactly 6 foot. And in texas. I am kind of a fan of taco hat but now the george straight hat looks good too. Back to being confused about which should I get as a beginner. Taco or George straight.
Nice video! I have worn straw hats my entire life and about two years ago started wearing felt hats.
If you have never worn a cowboy hat before I recommend starting with a Cattlemen’s crown and a 4” or 4.25” brim shaped in what makes you feel most comfortable. Wear that hat, get comfortable in it then step up to another hat that might be a different color, and style. Now you have two hats that you can switch up depending on what you are doing.
When you really get into hats next step is a custom hat made just for you. Those are awesome because they fit perfectly right from the start and are to your exact specifications.
You can get a straw hat in the $100 range. A 7X Stetson/Resistol, or American Hat is in that $225 / $300 range. Step into a custom 50% beaver / 50% hare felt and you are looking at $400. If you are making your living outdoors and want a hat to pass down a 100% beaver fur felt custom hat will go $650. - $1500+.
Great video can’t wait to see more!
Those are great tips! Glad you got into felts. I have a lot of fun picking everything out for mine.
I just starting filming the custom hat process last week when I got another custom hat. Hat won’t be done until around May but I’ll certainly have a video for that process when I get it.
Thanks for watching!
@@StartupCowboy who is your hat maker? I use Mike Marsh Millinery in CO. Great guy and tends to like the old styles.
Mark,
I was fortunate enough to be given a gift of a custom hat at Greeley Hat Works in Greeley, Colorado.
I am really looking forward to seeing the final product come together.
S^C
@@StartupCowboy Greely has really nice hats! I think they make their own felt. I got to visit their shop a year ago when I was in CO.
You are very lucky! Can’t wait to see it.
Helpful information... thanks. I have found for me (small-ish build, narrow face), the less-wide brims look best, at least to my eye. Compliment my face-shape better and not overpowering. And, being from New England with our wide-range of seasons, it's important to have materials (straw and felt) to suit the current weather conditions. Love the look!
Any specific comments about a "pinch front" vs the center crease? I've always leaned toward the pinch front but am completely ignorant of any "meanings" or messages the differences might create.
That third hat is a “Jimmie Allen” hat. I’m 6’ 3” and would never wear a short brim hat! I’m from Texas living in Colorado, love traditional black, dark brown, and straw hats!
I'm just the opposite... 5'8" and small build, so I prefer the narrower brims that don't overpower my slender face. It's important to choose a shape/style that you feel comfortable in. A lack of confidence can be as unattractive as a hat that doesn't fit well.
Another thing, shorter brim you can sometimes keep on when driving your car or truck, and it won't hit the head rest. If you have a big brim hat - no way, it is coming off, and then you probably need to lay it upside down somewhere, and it will eventually get a little wonky.
It should’ve always be removed when indoors or in a vehicle. If placed properly, the shape will maintain.
I have a cheap straw hat that I got for a cowboy event and I love it's shape, but I wish it was tougher
You do have the option of coating your straw hat with shellac or wax in order to make it tougher.
Another good video . Would be interested to know where you are located and some of your background in the cowboy world .
Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks! Born and raised in Wyoming and still currently reside here. Besides my general upbringing, I’ve trained horses for close to 15 years and I currently manage an arena and shape hats on the side. It’s been a great melting pot of a learning and experiencing lots of aspects of cowboy culture. I’m a lifelong learner and that’s how I wanted to shape my channel. There are so many things I’ve learned from old cowboys that that I think people should be able to CZcams or Google and find out.
Thanks for watching!
@@StartupCowboy Thank you for replying . I do enjoy your videos .

Yosemite Sam: How to choose the best hat shape for you
2:20 I want an extra big & completely flat broad brim hat. Do you have them & how much are they. Preferably brown in color due to my work that is always in the sun.
Where did the chamber pot style you are sporting originate?
What is that second hat?
thanks man
early in morning.... awwning.. ing ing... armour act a dollip... whin duskeet skeet skeet... rubber to my suzy... plunge out the jacuzzi
Good stuff sir.
Question: What exactly do you call the style you have on? That is the one for me. Thanks!
I don’t know if it has a specific name. But it is a Minnick crown with extra wide corners, extra low sides, but the back is slightly brought up and a tick more narrow than the front.
It’s kind of a Wyoming and Montana cowboy/ buckaroo style.
What would you suggest for a mountain man in the Rocky Mountains around Yellowstone Park? Great video by the way!
Hunter,
That is a great question! Because I’m assuming you are out in the elements quite a bit, my recommendation would be to go with a felt hat.
The factors you need to consider is your budget, weather and the elements, and personal style.
Because of the wind in Wyoming, and all of the array of weather that we get, my recommendation would be going with something, 4 inches or less for brim width. A shorter brim will give you plenty of sun protection, but won’t act as a sail on your head when the wind blows. Also, I would choose a darker felt so it looks nicer as it ages in the elements.
As far as styling and shaping your hat, I would recommend going with a more flat brim, and some type of water wicking crown. A flatter brim is much easier to maintain overtime, and is a very traditional look for an outdoors men. The crown styles that you could consider would be -open(very mountain man) the Montana peak, a Gus,or a simple cattlemen. I would definitely try to steer clear of a brick or a telescoping style crown, as they are more likely to retain moisture.
Hope this helps, please let me know if you need any more clarification or tips.
Thanks for checking out the channel!
Felt and leather are good for all weather but light fabric is cooler in the 🌞 sun. LOL but felt fits in the stream or lake and keep you cool and awake.
Hals & accessories paper. Made in
Where did this more recent brim shape trend cime from? The one where the bends in the front of the hat start WAY outside the eyes. If you're gonna go flat, go flat. Another way to split the difference is to keep the back of the brim flat with a pencil roll that fades into a 1990s cattleman crease with a bound edge.
👍🏽Im 6’8 I want to get my brim shaped like yours what would I tell the hat shaper so he’d make it like yours? Also how tall is the crown and how wide is the brim? Thanks
The hat dimensions definitely limit what you can expect from shape requirements.
To start make sure your hat is a 4 1/2 inch brim, which should also come with a 5 1/2 or 6 inch open crown.
Tell your shaper that you would like your crown to be 5 inches, or taller if you have more crown to work with. The crown style is also called a minnick if you need to know that.
As far as the brim is considered, the front of the hat is 12 inches from corner to corner. You can tell your shaper that you would like very soft corners. Another note is that you would like it to be as flat as possible with also having some dip in the front. Try to make sure that it is not too upright on the sides or the back because it will try to fold upwards.
Hope this helps, another thing that definitely helps hat shapers is to send them or show them a picture of the desired hat shape that you were looking for.

@@StartupCowboy awesome man thank you so much for explaining that so well! Great videos 👍🏽 god bless ✝️
Here is also a video of how I shaped another hat exactly the same. Hope that helps !

I´m curious how most western hats don´t have chinstraps, it´s an essensial here in the windy pampa
Why don't this video have more likes? Well made video. Thank you!
Thank you!
What type hat would a Colorado Cowboy wear?
I would say you would be safe with any version of a cattlemen creased crown with a medium or wide set brim.
Would the second hat you showed be suited for sw missouri?
Absolutely!
What was the third hat? Straw hat @ 4:11
Please tell me what style hat your wearing. Thank you
I don’t know if it has a specific name However it is common in Wyoming and Montana. The crown is a minnick. The brim is an ultra wide front (12” corner to corner) and it is set extra low. It has some dip to the front as well.
Thanks
So best shaped hat for a round face (and not much chin)? Lol. And what material will hold up best in winter (snow and rain)? Thanks!
I would recommend a wider front brim with a taller crow like a minnick or a cool hand Luke.
Awesome, thanks for the input!
Been wearing a “ Indiana Jones” hat . Or some call it an “Outback “
I differ from you in the last one, that´s a minnick crown and CHL brim, very popular shape between the bullriders, in my opinion a bit far from moderate look, thanks.
What brand was that short brim hat???
It is actually a retro Resistol, similar to the Stetson open road.
S^C
I think you're right it does look backwards
What about the hat you’re wearing??
What type of hat is the “George strait look”?
Usually it’s a 4 or a 4 1/4 brim with a standard crown height.
The crown is a cattleman. And the brim is pretty traditional. Front corners are the width of the persons face. Moderate to lower sides height. And a small dip in the front.
Hope this helps!
I have a Boy Scout Fedora hat, for me it works the best. Low hat, flat brim, slightly down in the front. Stetson hat bent up is not good, will not cover the hat during the rain.
What hat is the chocolate colored "taco" hat
Does anyone know what hat he is wearing in the video
This is a silver belly 7x American
I am not a Texan, and is your hat on backwards?
Great videos, but why not put each one on to show how they look when wearing?
Whats the style you are wearing. In this video
It’s a minnick crown and a Great Basin buckaroo/extra wide set brim.
I,m trying to find a hat for summer that looks manly but not like a halloween costume and not like a neckbeard fedora
I would recommend going with a 4 inch brim somebody palm leaf hat. Also, order it with an open crown so you can customize the size and shape to fit your specific needs.
You can also change the hat band to give it whatever look you need.
Hope this helps,
S^C
The older I get the shorter the brims and get, im kinda in to the Open Road styler hats nowadays, never been in to the taco style but thats probably a generational thing???
That’s an interesting thought. I know that my dad likes to rock a shorter brim and I’m sure that has a lot to do with practicality.
Certainly some generational factors go into style preferences, but I also think that a shorter brim makes more sense in a lot of situations, and with age and wisdom you start to realize that being practical should be the highest priority. Style comes second, and I admire that.
I inherited an old Stetson that has a huge 5” crown. Is there a shape or style to shape the crown closer to 4-3/16” to 4-1/2”? Thank you.
Yes, you could do a low cattlemen, or a brick that would bring down the top profile of the crown.
@@StartupCowboy , thank you, I’ll try the low cattlemen. Thank you again.
Hey is there any chance to find a site that is safe and sells cowboy hats that are literary without the ugly thing under the brim, couldn't find none all are fake...Where you brought yours, for my country those are expensive plus not very safe because gypsies wear here hats like that. And once i nearly fought one that tried to take my hat.
Low brim cattleman for the Intermountain west.
LOL I am not sure exactly what a “ buckaroo “ is , best guess not good. Here in Maine we don’t see too many cowboy / western style hats. This is the land of “ ball caps” . I am a fishing guide and wear a brimmed hat when it’s raining as I cannot wear a hood whilst working, can’t hear and no peripheral vision. I also wear felt hats in the fall and love a Stetson straw hat in the summer but often wear a Tilley brimmed had as they take being used as a fly swatter Much Better 😂. Plus in my environment and use having a hat crushed when not worn is a constant issue. I know for some “ when not worn “ simply doesn’t happen.
Buckaroo is just another word for cowboy. It is derived from the Spanish word vaquero, the v is pronounced like a b in Spanish. When adapted to English it became pronounced buckaroo. They primarily inhabit the Great Basin region of the country.
If you picked the hat you’re wearing I have to question your expertise.
I kinda thought that, but having lived in Texas, a lot of the styles are regional. My guess he's in North or West Texas. I give people points, too, for being real cowboys. Me? I'm "all hat and no horse."
Just got new hat , a cheap one , had it before but sold to a friend. He doesn't wear his, so I'll wear mine . Needs a new piece of leather string to make it nice . Best price too, should hide sweat better as well. Has a short brim too makes it easier to wear in the city. Kinda india anne jones /cowboyish
Gave a couple cheap summer cowboy hats away before and during calgary stampede. Had great weaved paper one but it acquired a sweat stain and a wrinkle so it got left behind for free. The other one had wonky wire brim that wasn't listening very well. Lol😊
Idk 4-inch is a little too bit. Personally I'm more comfortable with 2-3inch.
Flat vs taco vs rounded. Like how yours is
In east texas the stetson El patron is still king!!!
i wanted to find out WHERE to buy the elko ?????? but i should have read the title better " start up '8 SECOND' cowboy " it dosent say where can a 'COW-MAN ' BUY A HAT
I bought that hat from Sun Body Hats online. It’s my daily wear all summer and fall. Absolutely love it!
I wanna get a hat. But I got a damn moon-face and I feel like I look dumb😂
Where is sombrero for parachutists?
If you're choosing a cowboy hat based on wind speed you're probably not cut out to wear a cowboy hat. Cut from the wrong cloth if you catch my drift.
We got a real cowboy here folks 🤣
How about this: buy what you like, and enjoy wearing. Thinking you look good in it is a plus. If your friends and associates like it, Great - you have friends and associates with good taste. If they don't like it; well clearly they have no taste so who cares what they think about your chosen look.
The first and only real cowboy hat is the - Bolo
The kind that's a fedora.
Yeeeeehawwwww thank god Im a hillbilly🤠🍻
put the hats on
1:17 it's not that short man 😭
Only hands on my hats are Mexican Not enough Mexican made hats😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
It's a ladies sun hat or clergy shovel hat. Those are not cowboy hats.
I like the perspective of this video. I think the modern "taco" style with a flat front edge looks clownish. It is for wannabe rodeo riders. I prefer 3 1/2 inch brims or less. I would classify the "in between style" as 1950s cowboy style which is classy and not in your face.
You need some big ole ears! 🤣🤣🤣
Scuse me boys ... But I KNOW the best hat shape for me ... And like everybody else is the last thing on the entire planet I will ever be ...
Texas 🇺🇸
That gray hat has a front opening like a shovel or front-end loader! I don't know who started the trend of ungodly wide openings, but it's hideous
This dude’s hat isn’t working for him. And I never cared for the big wide square front look either. Reminds me of the flying nun.
All hat no cows😅
I've been trying to find discussion about Mexican style cowboy hats like Sinaloense and Duranguense style which look like 3.5in brim and more sharply bent up. This is collection is more like annoying trustfund cowboy white boy styles.
The un professional way to shape a hat is wet your hair pull it on and work in the sun! 😅
Why are you trying to sell / push amish hats on us? They are functional for the amish and looks good with their traditional clothes. But we (and you) look dorky when using them.
Wearing a hat such as you are wearing you cannot advise anyone how to pick a hat.
Actually, it just serves to illustrate that the only one whose opinion matters is the one WEARING it. No matter what style you choose, some will think it's flattering, some won't.
No real cowboy ever wears his hat indoors….
Pretenders do though all the time.
When yuppies try to teach hats while wearing his hat backwards.
