    The problem with cam mirrors is that the reproduced image is 2D since they use a one lens camera. While any mirror reflects 3D image. And this is crucial for sensing the distance and the speed of nearby vehicles. And the polarized glasses won't work on displayed image.

    I stopped driving artics some years ago, due to illness, I loved the twenty years plus and all the different trucks I drove, my ambition whilst on the road was to drive tankers and I managed that just before my illness brought about a career change. I must say, that I do miss this career, it was a passion of mine since being a boy. The video is great and that Mercedes is the right way ahead, sadly, technology will take over and the driver will be replaced, in time, so, to all those drivers out there who may be dismissing the mirror cam, I say, get use to it, or move on, business will be business and it there’s a way of cutting cost, then you know that it’ll happen.

As for driver's being replaced that won't happen, think of planes many years ago without auto pilot , now planes are teched up like our trucks but require manual landing and take off and manurvering , so we'll still need proper qualified driver's to manuver at sites, truck stops and even maybe built up urban areas , but who knows what will be in a 100yrs

    Keep your hands on the steering wheel he says but you’re glancing across at the screen which is more distracting than say turning a knob to adjust the heater, and it will take you three times as long by the time you’ve faffed about with the menus.
    Step to far I think, prefer conventional instruments and a proper dashboard like Scania went for.

      there are hard buttons for almost everything and everything can be done in three ways 1.via the touch screen 2.via the blackberry like things one the steering wheel or 3. via the hard buttons on the wheel, dash and the bottom of the left screen. honestly if you haven't had one for a day reserve your judgment because its a really good truck

      buck rogers or you can just control the climate control with one rotary know without even needing to look. I have tried both systems from Audi, VW and BMW and the traditional systems vs the dual touch screen set up are for more practical, ideal and safer, in control of a truck I expect it to be even easier than a car.

    • @letshaveya
      @letshaveya Před 5 lety +1

      Yeah thats what I was thinking or even worse you end up breaking one and its not as simple as replacing a mirror and no doubt cost a lot more to replace. They need a back up plan for when these camera's fail otherwise the truck becomes useless, you cant drive a HGV without mirrors. Technology is getting better but it still has its own problems.
      I know with some of the older vehicles I drove that had reverse cameras you were lucky if they worked half the time, so you would want to hope the mirror cameras are much more reliable.

    I know this is an old video. Only just popped up as a you might like this. But here are my thoughts after driving 1 for a week.
    PPC - annoying your in the middle off overtaking and on cruise and it senses a hill and slows you down. So you then have to override with your foot. lol
    Camera mirrors. They are ok except when it rains. With normal mirrror you have depth and can see abit more in HD where as the camera is SD at best and if the suns on the lens. Low in the horizon. You can’t see behind you. Where as a mirror only some of it usually top half you can’t see out off.
    The sat nav. I drive a 21 plate but the tomtom maps are 2019 and out of date and there is no way of upgrading them unless your company has spent money on the software in the office to upgrade it. Which they have not done. So it’s ok as a back up but can’t be relied on.
    The cabin controls are the wrong side they are passenger side and every other truck I have drove is either driver side or in the middle. Middle would be better.
    And our trucks don’t have ambient lighting so that must be an optional extra.

Personally I'm not sure about all these electronics, the mirror cams look good but just something else to go wrong, do they work well at night? Mercedes and electronics don't seem to mix to well. More and more gizmos perhaps taking attention away from the driver could become dangerous working nights.

    I get one with my new job next week , yeh little worried by the huge tech step I'll take , I started out on a 93 erf twin splitter, so kind of old school me but we have to go with times , pointless fighting it , sooner or later trucks will drive them selves and we will be a operator like a jet pilot , eventually older trucks like 15/16/17 reg will be pushed out of city's by stricter emission rules only allowing 18+ reg or newer, like it or not it's happening old school or not you will have choices, adapt or leave the industry daf are now following mirror cam, this is the future , as for car drivers , they will have to adapt too as once trucks self drive they won't care if cars are approaching roundabouts at stupid speed if it's empty it'll will go , so to sum it up if your new coming into this industry or won't be long befor we are in a futuristic world of hgvs driving them selves with us sitting there enjoying the view , less stress spending a decade passing joe blogs doing 0.00000001 mph less🤣

    I have seen them, and one of my MAJOR complaints is that the eyes have to re-focus when you change from looking at the road ahead to the mirror display. This is a problem for people that's 50+.

    There are buses in London that use cameras instead of mirrors. They have 2 cameras one wide angle and a normal angle. Two screens inside the cab.

  • @kieranhendy

    Do these remove a possible blind spot at junctions? I would imagine that the big, standard mirrors it would somewhat block your view at angled junctions?

  • @lockystocky1
    @lockystocky1 Před 4 lety

    I think they have missed a trick here considering they have gone to the trouble of the all singing and dancing mirror cameras . Surely it would make sense for some extra detachable cameras on the front of the trailer ? You can see one blind side when reversing but not the other ? Or am I wrong ?

  • @americanfreedomlogistics9984

    There’s been spin about Freightliner doing this in the USA.
    I’d have a really hard time adjusting to such an innovation myself.
    On another note if the camera gets taken off in a backing accident I’d wager they’d cost a great desk more to repair or replace than a traditional mirror.

    Guess I'm a bit late with the comments on this one? I've started seeing these new Mercs out and about recently, we still have 50 of the new Scanias..................Very happy with them. So very interesting to see your blind side reverse with the camera helping, did it actually change the angle to best help you reverse? Do those cameras also have infrared for night time use, that would be pretty cool........How many times can you not see anything in your mirrors on a cold dark wet night. One last comment, if your not allowed to use a mobile device while driving, what is the difference between the new Merc dash screens and using a mobile or Ipad while driving, they both use the same menu driven way of working, from a purely legal point of view. Just a few thoughts from a fellow trucker. Best regards Dave.

The mercs are fine if its just yourself driving it our 15 plate and 67 plates have already got charging sockets that dont work buttons missing off steering wheel radios that lose reception all the time(aahhhhh) so i really think all this tech is far to much them screens will get all smeared buttons will get crumbs in them my biggest thing is the position of them mirror screens.Can you let me know are they mounted to the grab handles??? Looks that way. when i have arm fulls of paperwork just use right hand handle to climb in can see them screens getting knocked to easy. also what about reversing into a a dark loading shed which i do everyday takes bit of time for my eyes to adjust on a bright day.Cheers kev dont think i would swap your tidy FH for an actros. Was driving a 2017 Actros for a month back in June and the brake assist was verging on dangerous. One example, driving through our yard, ground was wet, approaching the metal road plates covering some uneven ground, truck slammed the brakes on. I was just moving a trailer and did not have seat belt on, whacked my ribs off the steering wheel. On another day, something on the main road confused the truck, no traffic at all in front of me but traffic behind, truck decides to whack the brakes on. Now anytime i get in a truck with brake assist, I turn it off. I am not a fan of all this tech. I like it simple.

But the big issue I will miss if I drive one is buttons and dials that you don’t have to look away to see what you are programming. I think scania next generation has implemented new technologies well with tride and tested buttons and dials that when used to them, you really don’t 👀 away at them.. All very good in nice bright weather Try reversing with those mirror cams in the dark or rain, total and utter rubbish, even going forwards there useless in the rain, one tiny spot of rain on the camera magnifies hugely on the mirror cam.
    As for your fancy dashboard you can do very little without taking your eyes off the road, scroll through pages just to change a setting.
    Uncomfortable, heavy and if your over 6' you have to put the bunk up to be able to move the drivers seat back.
    Most of our drivers try to get one of our Volvos with over 900,000 clicks than the new Mercs 🤮

    I can’t really comment as I haven’t yet driven one ‘without mirrors’ but I think the camera on the passenger side will get knocked off as soon as you drive down a country lane. It’s too high and will get hit by the first low branch (which you’d normally miss) you encounter, leaving you with no N/S mirror and an expensive replacement camera ! Also, if they are like a tv screen when driving in the dark they will be a distraction if they are too bright !

    • @KevTee
      @KevTee  Před 5 lety +1

      Hey mate, good to hear from you, only time will tell if they get knocked off, my feeling is that they patrude less than a mirror and are slightly higher so if your in a situation you would rip it off, you would of ripped the mirror off anyway. The monitors do go into a night mode just like a satnav does but they also have a brightness adjustment also. Safe travels 👍

    • @danny1229c

      they can fold in if something is against them but i have to ask where is the brightness adjustment ? probably the only thing i haven't found yet ! also i've found when i adjust the mirror angles you can no longer use the yellow lines for distance judgement because they are set up for a set angle
