    As a new EMT, you will face critical 911 calls. Sometimes the 911 call that was dispatched basic life support ends up needing advanced life support care. This is one of the first skills you'll learn at your EMT job, when to call a Paramedic Intercept and how to set it up successfully.
    You've gotten through EMT School, now it's time to discuss some on-the-job tips!
    This is one of the biggest reasons I talk about Patient Assessment as an EMT, AEMT, Paramedic, calls like this.

    Though I agree that BLS interventions mostly cover the trauma aspect & fast transport is key, please dont forget identifying airway complications that require interventions as such as decompression & Cric which is most places can only be applied by an ALS service.

      Yup. The existence of such as thing as an "ALS intercept" will come as a welcome surprise to thousands of EMTs nationwide. It would be a good thing to have!

    What about a paramedic intercept for pain management? I had a Pt involved in a vehicle rollover, complaining of hip and lower back pain, only injuries. We were about 15 min out from the hospital. Pt was in excruciating pain, so I called for an intercept for pain management. We are just a basic service.

      Yes, that is another scenario to utilize for sure. I've intercepted for pain management before as well. Thanks for watching, Mike!

    Interception a huge thing! Get the patient in the ambulance and start transporting! Never sit and wait! It’s better to get as closest to the hospital. Those are critical minutes!!!

    Would it be wrong to have a medic meet us on scene? I guess I am only translating this weird.
    Like, if we get called to a scene and we at the very least know that it's a medical call, could we request ALS back up?

    • @chpunisher2005
      @chpunisher2005 Před 2 lety

      If you mean that you get a medical call (difficulty breathing, chest pains, etc..) and you are not on scene yet and want medics to roll ahead of that, then yes...In my area, they are usually dispatched simultaneously with BLS. If you get there and it's a scoop and go situation and medics aren't there, you transport and have the medics intercept if possible, but just get going. The intercept really depends on a bunch of variables such as transport time and ALS availability.
      Remember, you can always cancel ALS if it turns out you don't need them.
      I've had plenty of calls where medics were dispatched and I canceled because when I arrived I determined they weren't needed or we were so close to the hospital compared to how long it would take the medics to arrive.
      Also, your local protocols may be different so ALWAYS follow your local protocols regardless of anything someone says on the Internet.

      @mikemessler600 Před rokem

      Kevin, when we are paged out, if it sounds like more of an als call, we have the medic paged out also. They'll meet us there. Just to get ahead of the situation. If we don't need them, all good.
