    I've treated my room too , it's so incredibly important to invest in diffusors and absorbing. You can almost make any speaker really good that way.

    • @23chilled
      @23chilled Před 2 lety

      Exactly. You can make a budget setup or any setup sound better or transform the sound by doing that. Doesn’t cost the earth either. Heard some systems in person that people have been set up in some rooms. Spent £1000’s on gear and sounded awful because reflections everywhere. Bass loose and just no definition. It’s worth doing to bring all into focus. Even a small set of stand mount speakers can perform superbly with a low powered little amp like an old nad 3020 shine with some modest room treatment.

    Mr. McGowan I wanna say that I enjoy watching your videos and your general attitude towards life and the approach you take to your company and philosophy in general.
    Now I've never purchased any PS audio equipment, which is a shame but if you would ever so kindly please come and build an exact replica of that listening room in my home I would very gladly purchase some BHK equipment to fill it and I am also quite excited about the new transport as well.

    Great video, Paul ! But is that an AC vent coming out of the ceiling pumping hot air on those beautiful FR30's? Also you mentionl that the FR30's are monopole speakers. But I thought I saw tweeters in the back.

    • @aetch77
      @aetch77 Před 2 lety

      I thought it was a mid-range on the rear. I'm also pretty sure it could be turned down/off.

    • @joeb4349
      @joeb4349 Před 2 lety

      @@aetch77 No Helen, I checked. On one of Paul's videos he describes a 2nd tweeter on the rear . And you are right, it can be tuned up or down or off. These look to be various nice loudspeakers, especially for the price.

    • @user-od9iz9cv1w
      @user-od9iz9cv1w Před rokem

      Looks like an AC unit. No doubt that is turned off when listening but left on while the room sits empty with all the equipment powered up.

    I've been mixing music through my stereo system as well. It gives me a much, much better idea of what the final result is gonna sound like.

    • @mysock351C
      @mysock351C Před 2 lety

      Here, though, the FR30s have a rising treble response that causes all the mixes on them to be quite dark and recessed. There is a distinct change in the tonality if you rifle through Octave's catalog once they started using the FR30s as opposed to just using the ATCs or whatever they had before. If you mix on speakers, you need to be sure they are neutral, or whatever defects they have will be applied to the mix. E.g. if they have too little treble, the mix will be too bright. Too little bass, boomy. If there is a suckout in the midrange at the cross-over, then it will sound boxy or honky, etc. I would at least have actual monitors there somewhere in the mixing chain as a sanity check.

    Curious about the distance between speakers and distance from speakers to the listening position. I have the audiophiles guide (great resource; accompanying cd really completes the package) and was curious where the FR30s have landed in your 16' x 24' room.

  • @dannyfannyfoodle
    @dannyfannyfoodle Před 2 lety +4

    The speakers appear to be VERY close together, especially in proportion to the listening distance. You obviously know what you’re doing, but this is nothing even close to resembling an equilateral triangle. I’d be really curious to hear your thoughts on how you chose this configuration.
    Thanks for all the great work you do!

    • @elongatuspiranha
      @elongatuspiranha Před 2 lety +3

      I had basically the same dimension/size room that Paul has, many years ago. I had though Acoustat 1+1's medallion mod, Counterpoint equipment and VPI with Koetsu Black Goldline.
      Everyone that came and listened were amazed by the imaging and sound. I would guess that since this will be a demo room, they measured and did the listening tests. You won't know until you actually hear how it sounds to say that the speakers are too close.
      I positioned the speakers all over the room to get the best sound that I could. And surprisingly, the positioning was (and again, this was done decades ago) are similar to what I see here.

    The Fr30 is a partial di-pool, with the tweeter in the back.. And ht tweeter is responsible for about ~2k to 20k Hz, so a pretty big part of the audio spectrum.
    BTW it is really a pity in a dedicated listening room, that the cables are hold in place with a big mess of tape..

    • @TheDanEdwards
      @TheDanEdwards Před 2 lety

      "The Fr30 is a partial di-pool, with the tweeter in the back." - not in the typical meaning of that word. The speakers are BI-pole, that is, they have a second direction, that tweeter in the back. Another (and better) term is "poly-directional". A dipole (like Magnepans) send half (hence "di-" prefix, meaning _twofold_ ) the energy forward and half the energy backwards.
      "... with a big mess of tape.." - Paul stated that was temporary.

      You'll need to spend a fortune, it's the cost of obsession. However for most sane and balanced people, who have more pressing needs , it's best to spend wisely on audio gear. You don't need to spend a fortune to achieve a truely amazing system.

    Ideally, Paul needs a lot more treatment in that room.
    I'd like to see a LF decay measurement... unless those walls are adequately damping the bottom octaves, this room could benefit from a great deal more LF treatment.
    Either way, I dig the room and appreciate the content.
    I'm sure both the FR30 and the IRS V sound good in that room.
    However, they're simply scratching the surface of an adequately treated room. It can benefit from significantly more attention.
    btw; the FR-30s are an aesthetic grand slam

    Paul, who is your turntable guru? Is it you?
    Who dialed in the many vectors to ensure that your stylus makes the most out of the groove?
    Also, you have been using Vicoustic panels for some time.
    How many have come down?
    I am asking because they sell expired glue, and many customers have had panels come down. Vicoustic's CEO, Bert Goodman, has told me so.
    Lastly, please do not use a wide-angle lens.
    The shape of the room that it presents is distorted. It makes the side walls look like they are leaning. We do not see an accurate presentation of your room.
    As audio suffers from extra processing, so does video.
